All – I’m going to implement the new ‘quantum’ template this weekend. I have tested it before and while it improved some areas it rather messed up the formatting of the main forum index.

I’ll work on that with the support team (if it’s too much of an issue I can switch the template on and off very easily), can you give all and any feedback on how it works for you? Especially those that like to access via mobile.

    Hmm, just a little.

  • #14240

I don’t understand what you are trying to feed back there.

  • #14241

I’m viewing on mobile and the main forum menu is pretty messed up and difficult to read/navigate. It looks like an error or fault.

The individual sub-forum menus are much clearer and more legible than that, and I would say a slight improvement over what we had before.

I can email a couple of screenshots of what I’m seeing if that would help.

  • #14244

I couldn’t navigate from the main page. I had to use the pull down menu in the upper left corner.  Is that working as intended?

    Thanks,

    Hank

  • #14245

It’s okay. As said in the original post I know it messes up the formatting on the main forum page, it’s why I held off testing it further for a while. That’ll be addressed or I’ll just switch back to the old version if they can’t improve it but I have to leave it on for a little while for them to troubleshoot.

For PC users if it’s as good or a little better that’s fine. The main bit that interests me is mobile use as that’s where people expressed the existing board struggled a bit, especially with Youtube vids and topic lists.

  • #14248

On the main page I get the same mess Max posted (Chrome on Windows and Chrome on Android). Past that page everything looks fine on Windows and on my tablet. I think I like it better than the old formatting. Not sure about the speed, I’ll have to use it a bit more.

  • #14249

The vote up button is kind of broken. I get this on every post:

    Untitled

Where the circle thing is constantly twirling as if it’s trying to process something. Clicking to vote up doesn’t do anything so I have no idea if it works. Wait… ok, after several seconds it goes normal and tell me I voted (though every other post is still twirling away).

  • #14252

A huge problem for me is that that the background color of the posts is the same color as the rest of the site and makes it hard to read on my phone. Can that be changed?

  • #14253

I can change the colour in a while.

On the vote up thing, it’s more obvious now but the plugin mechanism has always been really slow. I’m looking at replacing it with another one.

  • #14254

YouTube videos still show up for me incorrectly – only a very small portion of the thumbnail and barely any text, similar to how they displayed before.

Not sure if the problem of them obscuring text below is still a problem as I haven’t found a post like that yet.

  • #14256

Okay the main forum index problem has been solved.

  • #14257

Front page looks much better now, thanks! :good:

I was going to type it, but i was falling asleep so i wasn’t have time to explain. So yeah the main page is broken on Chrome on my laptop, now it looks better, but the background color of posts definitely need to switch back to white.

  • #14272

I said in the opening post that the main forum index was broken (and is now fixed). Please give feedback on new items to help the best.

  • #14273

Oooh, this looks good. I’m a sucker for this font.

  • #14282

Black text on green background on computer and mobile are probably the biggest thing for me.

  • #14283

Ok. So I’ve started typing in the reply box on my mobile and the text wrapping has been fixed. The text no longer falls off the edge of the window. That’s a “win” in my book.

  • #14284

I wonder what happens if I post a YouTube video with text above it.

    And below it…

  • #14285

Yep. I’m also getting weird ass YouTube box with it over writing text below.

I like that you can see who has liked your posts.

  • #14288

Threads seem to be loading a little slower now too.

  • #14289

  • #14301

Quite like the new features, seems to work fine via Firefox, will test it on the mobile on Monday.

  • #14337

This thread is also displaying in two different Forums.

That’s deliberate, I pinned it in all forums so it isn’t missed. Past experience shows not all wander into The Pub threads.

As mentioned before the green background will change, it’s hard coded so I just need to wait for my developer to change that line.

  • #14338

I do like the look when using a laptop or PC.

  • #14348

Apart from the green background for the post cells (which, as noted, is changing), I really like the new style and all the changes. :good:

  • #14349

I agree, it’s definitely an improvement. Thanks Gar.

  • #14358

I don’t know if it’s related to the new template but every time I post in the video games thread about game the post disappears. When i post about my posts disappearing the post just find.

Sorry.  Wasn’t trying to pile on.  Just noting that it was doing the same for me in both places.  Thanks, Gar.

I’ve found this too. It can also be painfully slow when making posts too.

  • #14458

I had that problem before the new theme too.

  • #14462

I don’t know if it’s related to the new template but every time I post in the video games thread about game the post disappears. When i post about my posts disappearing the post just fine.

    This happened again. Quite frustrating.

  • #14466

I’m finding that some of them are taking up to 30 seconds or so to load. Is this the case for anyone else? I’m on mobile.

I’ve noticed an obvious slowdown compared to last week. Whether on my PC with Firefox, or my laptop with Chrome, it’s taking longer for some threads to load. Strangely, it doesn’t happen equally with each thread, but I can’t find any correlation between, for example, the size of the thread and time it takes to appear after I click on the thread.

  • #14477

The efforts to keep Bruce out of the video games thread seem to be working perfectly though, so there’s that.

  • #14513

I think the change is OK.

  • #14712

The YouTube videos are still obscuring text written beneath them.

The site doesn’t seem to be freezing on my phone anymore, so that’s definitely an improvement.

  • #14744

I really don’t have a clue what to do with the Youtube vids. It’s something that must happen when the interface shrinks down for mobile use, not really related to the template and I’m not finding any advice online.

For the slowness I still intend when the cash builds up to move to the SSD hosting option which should mean faster page loads, probably in March.

  • #14746

That’s pretty annoying about the youtube vids.  This can’t be a problem unique to this board, surely?

  • #14747

You’d think so because it happened just using the standard BBPress module but I can’t find any discussion on it.

When I next meet up with my group of developer guys I’ll see if they have any ideas.

  • #14748

As always, thanks for the efforts, Gar.

  • #14749

Agreed.  I think it goes without saying that we all appreciate what you are doing here. Gar is the best!

  • #14755

Yes, thankyou for all these efforts, and sorry if we feel like a bunch of moaners at times. It’s appreciated.

Edit: thanks for giving me zero score, Sharp Jr.

  • #14931

On mobile , that ‘last post’ link is very useful – nice and easy to hit.

  • #15326

This morning everything moving faster (after the last few days of being real slow on both my home computer and phone).

But I did notice I can only see the first post of the Pictures and Images thread.
Also tried clicking on the “last post” which didn’t work either.

  • #15328

I had the same problem – I eventually got into that thread by clicking on page 4. There seems to be a quirk when threads reach the final post of a given page that they generate a link for the next page even when there isn’t anything to see there yet.

  • #15330

Yes, that was it. Andrew’s was the last post of page 4.
    Thanks!

  • #15340

Still moving slow for me regardless of platform.

I noticed that next to the Vote up, there is a circle that is continually spinning in each post. I wonder if that is something that is slowing things down?

I’ve temporarily deactivated the votes, you tell me if it makes a difference.

  • #15355

It does seem a bit faster.

  • #15357

Has anyone else lost the ability to like a post? I logged out and back in again and still only have Reply/Quote/Report as options.

  • #15359

Has anyone else lost the ability to read the preceding three posts? Looks like Don has. :good:

  • #15362

To be honest I’m noticing it faster too, I think there may be an incompatibility with the BBVotes plugin I use for likes. Do people other than Martin and I see the same improvement?

If so that poses a little quandry. There aren’t many options for ‘vote up’ plugins available. I do have one installed (but deactivated) but didn’t use it for a couple of reasons. It comes with a thumbs down option I can’t disable and then gives users a star rating of 1-5 based on that. I’m not a fan of thumbs down, the site is meant to be a fun pastime and not for people to get depressed because everyone votes down their posts.

We are a small community so I guess we could agree just not to use the down-votes perhaps.

Yes, massive improvement. I wouldn’t be bothered if we did away with voting buttons entirely to be honest.

I’m happy enough to lose the ‘Like’ system if that’s the trade-off. I’m not sure it really adds a huge amount in a close-knit community like this one. We can express our positivity in other ways!

  • #15376

    Yes. It is much faster.

Nothing wrong with taking more time either.

Ta very muchly for all your efforts and kindness, Gar.

yeah, I think removing the passive like option will encourage more active engagement with posts (ir replies). Like this one.

Gumball Rally is one of my all-time favorite movies and I use that line myself!

As to speed, it is faster on my PC now. I would have no issue if we dropped the Like feature. It may actually produce more conversation as we would have to reply to posts to express our positivity.

  • #15389

I’m on mobile so might be having a slightly different experience, but either way it’s noticeably faster. Thanks Gar!

The vote system was biased anyway.

For example, lovely people like Dave got 2000 votes while curmodgeons like me only got 1000.

Did we really want to live in a world where the lovely people people get all the attention?

I can try the other ratings plugin and see what people think. I do find myself reading a funny post and reaching for the ‘like’ button that isn’t there.

What I’ll do is enable it for a day or two and then run a poll on whether to keep it or scrap it. In the end the purpose of this site has changed and it’s being funded by the users so I’m prone to go for the democratic option in these days where democracy is dying. :-)

Edit: Actually now I remember there are two options. The template comes with a ‘give thanks’ option that’s switched off right now but is closer to the thumbs up but with no cumulative ratings, let me try that one first.

The pages are loading quickly with the Thanks feature so there’s that.

Whether you call it a Like or Thanks or something else, it all represents a positive affirmation of the post. It doesn’t really matter what it’s called. Not having a cumulative rating is not a dealbreaker for me. I am fine with Thanks or nothing at all.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #15581

I agree. Unless a lot of people object I think I’ll just leave the thanks option and use that for ‘likes’.

The ratings stuff is overboard for this kind of discussion group, it’s designed for support forums for people to tell who the most useful contributors are but you know this one has no real purpose other than people chatting.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #15582

Works for me, the pages are still loading quicker with the Thanks function, so if people still want a Likes system then that seems like the best one to use.

  • #15583

Yeah the ‘thanks’ option is actually designed by the same guy who did the template so I knew it would run okay. The problem with the old ‘votes’ one is it was put out there by someone with no support or updates and obviously had some incompatibility issues.

Well, this thread has taken a strange turn.

I know there have been a few jokes about the karma points in the past but it’s not something I care about particularly, so as long as others feel the same then there’s no harm in losing them.

The new Thanks system seems to work fine as a substitute Like button for people who do still want that feature,  and I don’t know that counting cumulative Likes adds anything either way for this community really.
