At least when my favourite bands say it’s their final tour, they mean it!
Hides the tickets he just got for Deep Purple’s second “final” tour
I love music from the Balkans.
Have fallen in love with Mew. Just a beautiful indie song, one of the last before the invented the only indie/prog crossovers I’ve ever heard of.

The word is histrionic. Please don’t kill me, Andrew
Andrew is only fooling himself if he denies that.
“excessively theatrical or dramatic in character or style.”
Oh, it’s part of the appeal.
Both Justified and Ancient
The first new album of 2020: Flower Torania by Zio.
Very impressive. Sometimes veers into prog metal territory, which isn’t usually my thing, but there’s so much other stuff going on, it all works. Joe Payne and Hayley Griffiths sound fantastic together:
New Belle and Sebastian makes me happy:
Second new album of the year: Northbay by Sarah MacNeil. Music for clarsach and string quartet. Can’t find a sound clip to share, just trust me that it’s beautiful. And here’s a picture of me about 10 minutes before buying the album
Some news;
Aerosmith Drummer Loses Last-Minute Legal Bid To Play With Band At Grammys
Music’s biggest night is turning into music’s most litigious night.
Joey Kramer, the longtime drummer for Aerosmith, lost Wednesday in his efforts to have a judge rule that he can participate with the band in weekend activities.
Kramer, who has played with the band for 50 years and came up with its name, was recovering from a spring injury. When he wanted to return, the band insisted he audition for them, and then decided his skills were not up to par.
Aerosmith is scheduled to perform at this weekend’s Grammys. The 69-year-old Kramer sued the band in Massachusetts, claiming they breached his contract by denying him the opportunity to perform.
The judge agreed with the band’s contention that there was no time left to work him in, “given that Kramer has not played with the band in 6 months and the dearth of available rehearsal time before the upcoming performances, Kramer has not shown a realistic alternative course of action sufficient to protect the band’s business interests.

Aw, that’s a shame. I was a big Aerosmith fan as a kid and I hate it when relationships fall apart over stuff like this.
Who?
Not The Who-The HU- Mongolian Throat-singing Folk Metal:
protect the band’s business interests.
They are playing at a awards ceremony not a concert, what business interests are involved? some times lawyers and judges just boggle my mind over decisions like this.
They are playing at a awards ceremony not a concert, what business interests are involved?
I don’t know, if you give a shit performance at a very high-profile gig that’s going to be seen around the world then you could suffer quantifiable damage from that in terms of ticket sales, records etc.

I’m sure Aerosmith has had shit concerts over the years yet people still go to their shows.
It really is a bullshit ruling.
Imagine the opposite outcome of a judge ruling the other way, forcing them to let him perform and him then being awful. That feels like a more absurd scenario to me.
Kramer, who has played with the band for 50 years and came up with its name,
This is the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Who do you think is more responsible for Aerosmith being in the hall of fame. Some session drummer or the guy who helped start the band?
How is that absurd?
BTW, how many HoF performances can you remember? is it more or less than 50% of the existing performances
Who do you think is more responsible for Aerosmith being in the hall of fame. Some session drummer or the guy who helped start the band?
That isn’t the point being argued here at all. I don’t think anyone can deny his history with the band – like I say, I was a big fan as a kid and I thought he was great. I still remember feeling his drums vibrate my body at an amazing gig they did at Wembley decades ago now.
The issue is whether he is currently able to play competently with the band. I don’t think any of us is in a position to judge that. I don’t know that a decision to compel them to let him play is any better than a decision to allow them to not let him play.
Any idea what led to this? This sounds like a little bit more than “He hasn’t practiced enough.” Something like this is a big deal to a band and to cut out a key member or not do everything they can to work with him stinks of something else.

From the article it sounds like he was recovering from his injury, they asked if he would play, he took too long to commit and maybe messed them around a bit, they found an alternative and he was unhappy and wanted to push back in.
I can see both sides feeling poorly treated by the situation, and ultimately it’s a shame for it to come to this. It does suggest that communication has broken down somewhat.
I can’t imagine any of them are in tip top shape at this point.
BTW, how many HoF performances can you remember? is it more or less than 50% of the existing performances
Most of the HoF performances also have a bunch of other people jamming along with the inducted band or performer.
I still remember when Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar accepted their induction on behalf of Van Halen because everyone else’s egos were going crazy. That was hilarious. In the case of Aerosmith, I could see Steven Tyler’s ego taking control.
I can’t say that I know exactly what is going on with Aerosmith, but I do know that drumming, particularly for hard rock bands, is a pretty intense thing. People get older, and when you’re pushing seventy, not many folks are going to have the strength or stamina to keep going for two hours a night. Drummers are, essentially, the backbone of the group’s sound, and when they’re off or can’t keep up, it messes with the rest of the band’s ability to deliver.
There was the famous controversy about Bill Ward not being part of the recent Black Sabbath reunion, and there are rumors that Mick Fleetwood uses a backup drummer hidden behind a curtain when he tours with Fleetwood Mac.

Fair enough, but you could at least let the guy do one song. It’s unlikely for an event like that or the Grammy’s that they would do much more than that anyway.
This hit me right in the sweet spot.
New album of 2020 #3: Rebecca Hill, The Airing. (It’s just an EP really.) Four short pieces for Harp, fiddle and mandolin. I think they’re all self-composed, and it’s all very pleasant but nothing very adventurous:

As is tradition local youth broadcaster Triple J had their “Hottest 100” countdown over the weekend (a poll of listeners (and non-listeners) to determine the hottest or most favoured song of the past 12 months) – we didn’t listen to it as we weren’t home (I likely wouldn’t be familiar with more than a dozen songs on it, but usually still enjoy it as a means of keeping up with the kids. Even though I’m usually hearing the songs for the first time it’s rarely offensive and serves as a nice background while gaming or cooking or whatever), but the big news was that for the first time ever a solo female artist took out the top spot – Billie Eilish with “Bad Guy”. Everyone was expecting “Tones & I” to top the list but there’s been a bit of a backlash to her (and her vocal affectation – cultural appropriation?) – her big single placed 4th.
More appealing was sister station Double J replaying yesterday the hottest 100 countdown from 20 years ago – 1999’s best songs. We did listen to that and enjoyed it (despite the appearance of Limp Bizkit).

Did you see that Bad Guy samples the sound of a pedestrian crossing in Sydney that Eilish recorded on her phone?
There is a lot of great Swedish folk music.
Line up of the Edinburgh Summer Sessions festival. Notice anything strange about it?
Hint: here’s the same poster showing all the female bands:

New albums of 2020 #4: The Serpent Rings by Magnum.
It’s a decent rock album, and it’s got the expected Magnum style, but none of the songs are really standing out as anything special. Not bad, just … ordinary.
On the positive side their ice creams are lovely.
OMG I’ve never heard that joke before!
Interesting trivia: the Magnum ice cream was launched in 1989. I was surprised to find it was that recent, it feels like they’ve always been around.

To find that information out did you employ a Magnum P.I.?
I can’t believe it’s been this long and nobody has asked me if I’m feeling lucky, punk?
none of the songs are really standing out as anything special
Maybe that is because their lead singer looks like he can barely stand up let alone stand out
I saw him perform on stage last year for a solid 90 minutes of energetic rock songs. His voice isn’t what it was, but I’d be happy to have half his energy when I’m 72.
Two gigs this week.
Wednesday was Bad Wolves supported by Thousand Thoughts at the O2 Islington. They filled that venue and the show was good fun. It was a friend’s spare ticket so I didn’t really know either band, but I had a good time. Both bands played for the crowd and to the crowd. They were there to entertain.
Thousand Thoughts are new and young, they sound a bit generic to me, but if they stick with it they’ll become themselves at some point. They have talent.
Bad Wolves are all older and more distinctive. They’ve all played with other band but this is their third year as a group. they’re best known for a cover of ‘Zombie’ and they were going to re-record it with Dolores O’Riordan but that was still in the very early planning stages (basically she’d said yes she would do it) when she died.
Friday night was Bad Wolves again, but this time as the opening act, in the Wembley Arena. I missed them this time as I was travelling from work, but I’m sure they did well.
The headliners were Five Finger Death Punch, who I only know of because my friend is a fan. They gave it 100%, had a big light show and the crowd was very much there to see them and had a terrific time. The guy in the row in front of me had such a good time he fell over twice while jumping up and down!
But, for me, the big deal was the middle band; Megadeth.
As a couple of other friends have said when I told them; how the hell were Megadeth not the headliners?
They were great though. Thrash metal was never huge for me, but obviously I knew them and it was very nostalgic to hear them again, honestly for the first time in years.
They did an hour and it was almost non-stop.
One thing that came up multiple times though, was when the older bands stopped to do a little talk to the audience, they all shared stories about health problems and while one was cancer (now in full remission) the others were drink and drugs. Rock takes it toll on the body.
I was wondering why you saw Bad Wolves and Five Finger Death Punch on different nights. The front man of FFDP, Zoltan Bathory, manages Bad Wolves and the lead singer of Bad Wolves, Tommy Vext, fronted for FFDP on tour while Zoltan was in rehab. So the two bands are pretty closely associated. Their styles are pretty similar too. That is a bit odd that Megadeth were a supporting act.
Metal AF 9 year old. I wish i did everything with as much joy this kid has when drumming.
The front man of FFDP, Zoltan Bathory, manages Bad Wolves and the lead singer of Bad Wolves,
That’s interesting, but the really important question is; is that his real name?

Oops. Zoltan is the rhythm guitarist not the lead for FFDP. Yes, that is his real name. He’s Hungarian. Ivan Moody is the frontman.
Tommy Vext is a stage name though. His real name is Thomas Cummings. It was Moody that he replaced on tour but Bathory is Bad Wolves’ manager.
I ask because it’s an awesome name!
That is a bit odd that Megadeth were a supporting act.
The lead singer of FFDP was geeking out about touring with them.
It might be that Dave Mustaine wanted a slightly easier tour, after his cancer treatment?

She’s not just metal;
There’s some Taylor Swift in her Youtube page too, the kid is eclectic. Good for her!
Here we have Joe Bonamassa obtaining yet another guitar from Norm. What’s interesting for posting here is what he named the guitar. He thought he named it after a restaurant. I provided the more Morrison details.
Went to an afternoon concert by the percussion section of the local orchestra today. It was a fun hour of music, geared towards kids (quite a few recognisable tunes from movies/shows, including the Incredibles theme which I loved hearing) but also with some pieces in there for adults, including this which was lovely.
We also had amazing seats (that we somehow snagged for free) right down by the side of the musicians. This was the view from my seat:
Sorry if this is a bit political for the music thread, but it’s important:
“It’s going to be devastating” – here’s how Brexit will screw over British touring artists
Its thought that the extra expenses incurred and added paperwork relating to Visas, taxation and transporting equipment and merchandise will make crossing the Channel “completely unviable” for new and mid-level artists.
The main concerns revolve around the money and manpower involved in completing the paperwork for multiple Visas to work across Europe, as well as filling carnets (an international customs and temporary export-import document) for the movement of all instruments and equipment, paying tax on the import and export of merchandise and applying for licences to do so on each tour, payment of social security in each individual EU country, and the regular checks against all documentation to ensure that it covers artists for a period of grace beyond any touring that you may be doing.
Then you’ve got James Blunt saying it doesn’t matter and won’t affect him – and you know what? He’s right. With the amount of money he makes from touring, he won’t even notice.
If we’ve got a new grime artist that’s starting to break through and could probably support five or six 300 capacity gigs in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Paris, Barcelona, Milan and Berlin – those are the people that won’t be able to do that anymore because it will just be an impossible process for them to manage,
We get that problem in Malaysia now. For some daft reason to play even one gig you need to apply for a work visa as if you were applying for a permanent position in a firm. You can imagine the admin and cost required there for a band and crew.
So as in the James Blunt example the only touring bands we ever get are the huge selling ones that would have dedicated staff to manage all that stuff. Next door neighbours Singapore and Thailand don’t inflict the same dumb rules on themselves so it’s frustrating to see mid level artists skip us.
In fact it links into the article’s final bit because the most famous grime artist of them all, Stormzy, is playing here in March but none of lower level acts referred to. The musician passport sounds a very sensible solution.
What the article doesn’t really address is the flip side of how it’s going to affect the UK audiences. European bands will face just as big a hurdle when they try to play in the UK as a UK band trying to play in Europe. So as in your Malaysia/Singapore/Thailand exmaple, a French band will be thinking why should we spend all this time and money going to the UK when we can go and tour Germany for no effort instead?
Yup just that, or what is closer to my analogy (as you have to go through Malaysia to get from Singapore to Thailand) the tour goes Netherlands, Belgium, France, ……Ireland.
Even a Maestro has teachers.
Went to see 3TEETH live last night who have become a rubbish Nu Metal band somehow, maybe it was just the shitty sound mix but it wasn’t good.
They were supported by Pig though who were glorious, in a fantastically daft way.
New stuff learned by old goat! Have had “Wah-Wah” as an earworm for a week, both the Concert fo Bangladesh and Tedesci/Trucks Band performances. It has bothered me for days to not remember the name of one marvelous back-up singer, Claudia Linnear! You may recognize her from her nick – Lady Grinning Soul.
Then there was Spector hovering over the proceedings.
The exceptions are as follows: “Wah-Wah”, which starts off with the evening version but cuts to the matinee at 2:53; Harrison’s band introduction and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, both sourced from the first show; and Russell’s medley, which is also from the matinee on the album, but in the concert film, the audio cuts to the evening show during “Youngblood”
So, jumping all over the place. Lots of info in the Wiki article.

Here are the tunes in question, so y’all don’t have to go searching.
New albums of 2020 #5:
Shuffle and Go by Fairport Convention
Nothing that breaks new ground, but all unmistakably Fairport. It seems unbelievable that a band in its sixth decade can make music that stands equal to anything they’ve done in the past. But here it is.
Still on nostalgic path. @Ronnie – please note Joe’s t-shirt. In 1970, baby!
Sometimes simple is better. Busking on YT.
Sixth new album of 2020: Sleepwalking by Mariana Semkina.
Just breathtakingly beautiful. How is it possible for songs of pain and loss to be so beautiful?
Marjana is extraordinary.
Don’t miss the accordion solo!
I have been a frequent customer of Spillers in the past, it’s a great record shop. I think a large part of what’s kept them going is being wise very quickly to the changing market. They were quick to put the emphasis on signings, live performances, the move to vinyl and also selling merch on the back of their status as the oldest record shop.
Wow. That Morrissey guy is a real winner.

8th new album of 2020: Rota Fortunae I by Kate Arnold
Just when you think you’re short on albums with mediaeval Latin lyrics and multi-tracked violin and hammered dulcimer, somebody comes along a releases a rather good EP exactly like that.
(I don’t think you can dance to it, in case you were wondering.)
Don’t or can’t?

I question your order there but OK.

Public Enemy Sacks Flavor Flav
3/1/2020 by Lars Brandle
Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy perform onstage at the Art of Rap festival at the Hollywood Palladium on July 22, 2016 in Los Angeles.
Flavor Flav and Public Enemy have parted ways.
It’s not entirely clear when or why the relationship deteriorated, but there’s no doubt who is calling the shots. The Hall of Famers issued a brief statement Sunday (March 1) to announce Public Enemy and Public Enemy Radio will be “moving forward” without their hype man. “We thank him for his years of service and wish him well.”
And that’s about it.
The diminutive rapper has played a massive role in shaping hip-hop culture. In 1980s New York City, Flav (real name William Drayton) joined forces with Chuck D, Terminator X and Professor Griff to launch Public Enemy, a take-no-crap hip-hop act that inspired countless others to fuse politics with fiery wordplay.
Public Enemy lit the blue touch paper with their 1988 album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which was entered by the Recording Academy into its Grammy Hall of Fame.
In its first year of eligibility, Public Enemy were inducted into the Rock Hall in 2013, becoming just the fourth hip-hop act to get the nod, following Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys.
Flav has been on the outer and his relationship with his bandmates took a legal turn when his reps issued a cease and desist letter to Bernie Sanders’ campaign following news that Chuck D would perform at the Democratic candidate’s rally Sunday in Los Angeles.
“We have become aware that Flavor’s bandmate and Public Enemy co-creator, Chuck D, has endorsed Bernie Sanders’ candidacy for President and plans to perform at an upcoming Sanders Rally,” reads an open letter written by attorney Matthew H. Friedman of Nevada law firm Ford & Friedman that was sent to Billboard on Friday (Feb. 28). “While Chuck is certainly free to express his political views as he sees fit – his voice alone does not speak for Public Enemy. The planned performance will only be Chuck D of Public Enemy, it will not be a performance by Public Enemy. Those who truly know what Public Enemy stands for know what time it is, there is no Public Enemy without Flavor Flav.”
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Chuck D said of Flav, “Flavor chooses to dance for his money and no do benevolent work like this. He has a year to get his act together and get himself straight of he’s out.”
Chuck D, who also played with the recently disbanded Prophets of Rage, also went on the attack with a string of tweets. “I don’t attack FLAV on what he don’t know,” reads one message. “I gotta leave him at the crib so y’all trying to fill his persona with some political aplomb is absolutely stupid.”
Time’s already up, judging by the 125-word statement issued late Sunday on behalf of Public Enemy and Public Enemy Radio.
The message continues, “Public Enemy Radio, made up of Chuck D, DJ Lord, Jahi and the S1Ws taking it back to hip hop’s original DJ-and-turntablist foundation, will be performing today at the Bernie Sanders rally in Los Angeles. The free event is being held at the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning at 4:00pm PT with the group taking the stage at 6:00pm PT. It can be viewed via livestream HERE. Public Enemy Radio will be releasing a new album in April, ‘Loud is Not Enough.’”

Jazz quartet records an album in a forest, with all percussion coming from the forest itself. Fascinating and beautiful. Composer/percussionist Andras Des is a mad genius.
For the first time in 24 years, we're not playing on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The current world situation is the ONLY thing that would ever stop us from doing so…

I like these guys. They also did Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” and Satchmo’s “Wonderful World”. They just fell down one big, giant rabbit hole. It’s a joy to watch! I think they’re Brits, and could use some clickies. Yes, I’m asking for likes for obscure reaction videos whether one likes them or not. Anything to save souls from rap!
