‘This isn’t a paranoid future nightmare’: the explosive return of Chris Morris
Looking forward to this. Four Lions seems like a long time ago now.
THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO FOCUS ON GETTING FUCKING BONE DONE!!!!
More seriously, it’s interesting that they’re acquiring another fantasy comic that is in a similar vein as Bone. Already planning on keeping and further building that audience, I suppose.
Fuck yeah, man!!!!
House Atreides:
And there’s Javier Bardem as what I assume is Stilgar. What a fucking cast.
This is going to be big for me.

Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson as the Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Guerney, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho(!), Javier Bardem as Stilgar and Chang Chen as Dr. Yueh. It’s an impressive House Atredies.
My feeling going in is that I have total confidence that this will be a good version, I’ll really like it, in fact I’ll probably laud it as an excellent scifi film but…
…I’ll probably have some issues with how they wrap it up in the second film.
And right now, I’m ok with that.
God yeah, I can’t wait to nitpick all the stuff that I’ll think they could’ve done differently :)
But man, if I love this as much as I’m hoping right now…
I don’t have much knowledge of or interest in Dune so I’m coming at this from the different perspective of being interested solely because it’s Villeneuve’s next big project. After Blade Runner 2049, Arrival and Sicario he’s earned interest from me in whatever he chooses to do next.
I do wonder how they’ll seek to capture mainstream audiences’ interest in this – I think there’s a risk that this kind of intricate detailed sci-fi mythology with a hardcore in-built fanbase could be off-putting and people might stay away from it – but hopefully that won’t be the case.
Are the two films being made simultaneously or is the fate of the second movie predicated on how well the first one does?

The first book is a stand-alone story and while it does dump a lot of information on the reader, it’s laid out in an easy to follow fashion and so long as they keep that in mind for the movie, they should be fine. And as much as I love the Lynch version, it’s a really good example of how not to get viewers up to speed with the setting.
By splitting the film in half, and the first one ending around the point they’ve said it would means they’ve got room to expand on character plots, take their time setting everything up, and still end on an exciting setpiece and cliffhanger. While they’ve not filmed the second movie yet, it looks like pre-production is already taking place.
Fuck yeah, Dune!!!
A lot of people online, mainly film twitter, are complaining about the color palettes in the photos but, like, it’s Dune… it’s mostly set in the desert. Idk, I like colorful sci-fi movies, colorful movies in general, but classics like Alien and Star Wars are basically black, white, and tan and it serves those films well.
I miss the baroque design choices that Lynch made, this is looking a little generic right now.
But I trust the storytelling. I think they’re going to be good films.
I think those pics look rather Lynchian so far… The fremen costumes definetly do, and so does the castle… I’m sure Villeneuve will be smart enough to take what worked from the Lynch flicks.
I’m actually a bit disappointed by the plain-ness of the Atreides garbs… I was expecting a bit more detail, not colors necessairly, but I dunno… something a bit more opulent, given the context.
Also, while it’s a good cast, I still can’t get over the fact that some of those actors looks like other characters… Isaac looks like Duncan Idaho, I would’ve used Brolin as Stilgar (since they’re not going with arab actors anyways) and Zendaya is… ugh, not Chani. It’s probably nitpicking, but I have a certain image of those characters and some of those actor choices I just don’t like…
But hey, at least they’re commited to 2 movies… that’s the good news. I hope the franchise explodes in popularity so we can get some of the sequels… I’d love to see how Emperor would look like…
Yeah, true, the Atreides uniforms and armor are pretty dull.
Just to be awkward, I watched the whole thing.
You missed the point: he’s both Bill and Ted. He’s sweetie-pie, existential, excellent Keanu.
he’s both Bill and Ted
I don’t particularly care for McDonalds, but it’s closed for now, and (thanks Keanu) I want a Big Mac.
There is no spoon burger.
Why not just make your own burger? (Be sure to watch the whole video.)
Yes but what if I want a chicken burger?
Watch Keanu again, Anders. He’s very reassuring. He made the interview about the interviewer and put him at ease.
Keanu is a most excellent wee dote. (I still want a bleeding burger. Mayhap tomorrow).
This looks like a fun, undemanding, creepy thriller. Something for Friday night and, hopefully, in a cinema with other people.
Yeah, true, the Atreides uniforms and armor are pretty dull.
They are a spartanic, no-nonsense House though. Maybe the Harkonnen and other Houses’ troops will look more baroque.
Yeah but they still wore visible red insignias and that kind of stuff… I mean, they could’ve made them look cooler, that’s all I’m saying… some textures, some motifs… I dunno… anything… those uniforms looks incredibly boring and bland.
Chris Pine [in negotiations] to Star in ‘The Saint’ Reboot for Paramount
Chris Pine is in negotiations to star in a reboot of “The Saint,” the 1997 action thriller that starred Val Kilmer. The movie follows Simon Templar, better known as The Saint, a Robin Hood-esque criminal and thief for hire who goes on a globetrotting adventure.
Dexter Fletcher (“Rocketman”) will direct the film and Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (“Transformers,” “G.I. Joe) is producing along with Brad Krevoy. Robert Evans, who served as a producer on the original film and died in 2019, also helped produce.
–SNIP–
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic shutting down almost all film and TV projects, it’s unknown when “The Saint” would go into production. It seems likely that this would mark Fletcher’s next film with Pine’s commitment. The director had been developing several films since finishing “Rocketman,” including the Dracula pic “Renfield” at Universal, but this seems to be in first position now that Pine is attached.
–SNIP–
“The Saint” is based on a 1920s book series of the same name by Leslie Charteris. In addition to the Kilmer film, it inspired a 1960s TV show starring Roger Moore. Paramount sees the reboot as the potential start for a long-running movie series.

Chris Pine to Star in ‘The Saint’ Reboot for Paramount (EXCLUSIVE)
You’d think Variety would google a more complete list of Saint adaptions?
Never mind. Pine and Fletcher are both very good. I hope this happens.
I can see Chris Pine as The Saint. He has a charm and humor similar to Roger Moore. I am cautiously optimistic on this.

EXCLUSIVE: Marc Guggenheim has been set by Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 to adapt Prophet, the Image Comics character hatched by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.
The aim is to build a franchise around John Prophet, a DNA enhanced super-soldier placed into a cryogenic freeze for a future mission only to awaken prematurely in the present, searching for a mission that does not exist. The ruthless berserker must find his humanity.
Pic is produced by Adrian Askarieh (Hitman: Agent 47), Brooklyn Weaver (Run All Night), and Rob Liefeld. John Hyde and Terissa Kelton will also be involved in producing capacities.
Prophet originated in Liefeld’s Youngblood, and grew into a series of his own in 1993. He cross-pollinated with another Liefeld creation, Cable, who was played by Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2 and is expected to be part of the X-Force franchise launch that Drew Goddard is writing to direct. It’s all based on the comic characters created by Liefeld, who made a deal with Netflix for his Extreme Universe pool of superhero characters to be used in franchise creations creatively overseen by Akiva Goldsman.
Guggenheim is best known for Arrow, Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, and he’s making his directorial debut on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, a crossover from The Flash, with that episode to air shortly on the CW. He’s also adapting the graphic novel Gantz for Sony Pictures.
John Graham and Guy Danella will oversee for Studio 8 and also be producers with Robinov.
Guggenheim is managed by Cliff Roberts and lawyered by Ziffren Brittenham.
Oh boy, that totally sounds like it’s gonna be something completely different… it’d be great if it was like the recent Prophet CBs, but I doubt it… it’ll probably gonna end up being a generic super soldier thing, much like Bloodshot ended up being…
Liefeld said it’ll be based on the original comics, not the recent reworking, so your fears may be correct.
Liefeld said it’ll be based on the original comics, not the recent reworking, so your fears may be correct.
Wonder if they’ll have captions with Bible scriptures like the original comics.
Yeah, it all sounds very generic. And I have my doubts that Guggenheim can do anything very interesting with this. But we will see, who knows.
with what now?
Scorcese-friendly characters?
Like what, Rorschach but he’s a mob hitman? Batman but he’s a mob button man? Lex Luthor played by Joe Pesci?

“You think I’m funny, Superman? How am I funny? You explain to me, how am I funny?”
Ok, could be good.
A rewatched 10 a few years ago. It really did not age well. They are going to have to overhaul it big time to make it work in today’s climate.
“You think I’m funny, Superman? How am I funny? You explain to me, how am I funny?”
“You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it’s me, I’m a little fucked up maybe, but I’m funny how, I mean funny like I’m a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I’m here to fuckin’ amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny? Do I look like the goddamned Joker?”

Yeah, people will lose their fuckin’ minds over a blond white girl with cornrows these days.
I always found Blake Edwards’ films kind of odd. Even watching them when I was a kid, they came off of being kind of smug, like Edwards was trying to comment on men and women and dating and romance, but, even when I was twelve or thirteen, it seemed like the old man wasn’t anywhere near as clever and insightful as he though he was.
Still, 10, made it look like it as a lot more fun to be a horny middle-aged man in the 70s than it is now.
Tenet is looking good. I’m looking forward to it.
Yeah looks good. And the palindrome name makes a lot more sense now.

I hadn’t even noticed it was a palindrom until i saw the trailer.
Looks interesting. I’ll go see it.
Yeah, looks like it’ll be a neat little cinematic mindblow.
It was posted, but I think it’s disappeared? In the TV news thread, Ben’s post answers to what I think used to be the post with the trailer… anyway, it looks pretty good.
Bruce Campbell Says New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie Has A Writer-Director, A Title & A Twist
Two years after Ash vs. Evil Dead ended its three-year run on Starz and nearly four decades after the creepshow began with The Evil Dead, Campbell said he won’t be appearing in the new film.
“From this point forward, [the Evil Dead films] kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” Campbell told the magazine in a snippet released today. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
I liked the Fede Alvarez film
Re: Bill and Ted Face The Music
That looked pretty sweet. I remain convinced it will be an entertaining and generally goofy movie without serious overtones. Which is just what I would want from a Bill and Ted movie.
That looks good. Hopefully Archive will be Theo James’ opportunity to become recognized beyond the Divergent films.
The director is Gavin Rothery. He was the concept artist and VFX supervisor for Moon. It’s his first feature film. There’s a nice nod to Moon in the trailer.
He directed a cool short a few years ago called The Last Man.
Michael Mann & Hugh Jackman Movie ‘Ferrari’ Zooms Onto Cannes Virtual Market Grid With STX & Amazon
This movie has been in the works for about 20 years now; glad it’s finally happening. Rewatched all of Mann’s movies last year, and he’s a great director.

The King’s Man looks like a lot of fun.
And I still can’t believe how much Rhys Ifans looks like Peter Stormare as Rasputing. Maybe I’ll just start ignoring the reality of this and believe it is Stormare, on general principle.
And I still can’t believe how much Rhys Ifans looks like Peter Stormare as Rasputin
I didn’t recognise him and I’ve actually been in a TV sketch with Rhys Ifans when I was younger (he was part of a comedy duo on Welsh language TV).
Well, Mel Gibson won’t be in this either, so going for an entire recast is probably something that makes sense to the producers.
I do get her point about ageism, but… I don’t know, Chicken Run was twenty years ago and if the sequel takes place a day after the plot of the first one, that’s quite a difference.
I’m not entirely comfortable with the practice of casting humans to voice chickens.

To be fair, they auditioned thousands of chickens, but they were all terrible at remembering their lines, and totally sucked at improvisation.

Come on, as long as we’re casting chickens to voice humans I am sure things will even out in the end.

Jesus, Netflix are still going bigger and bigger. I have no idea how this kind of effort fits into their business model, it seems overly expensive. But hey, I’ll be happy to watch that.
Deadpool and Starlord? Cool!
Pretty sure youre thinking of Ryan Seacrest and Chris Cuomo

nope, it is Ryan Ruocco and Chris Berman. Sports announcers.
Project Power looks pretty bad. I’ll probably watch it (being the target audience for a superhero movie kind of thing) and hope that it’s just a bad trailer for a good movie.

Netflix and the NFL don’t play well together.
Jesus, Netflix are still going bigger and bigger. I have no idea how this kind of effort fits into their business model, it seems overly expensive.
My suspicion is this kind of thing is the step to make them essential over the competitors. It’s all a bit more desperate for Netflix to take that tole because all the others have different revenue streams. Apple don’t really need the TV bit, Amazon will be fine doing mail order, Disney likewise will still have endless IP and theme parks.
There’s no immediate logical return on $200m for a single film for them but it’s all adding to that essential back catalogue if it works.
I wonder if it’ll end up slightly like a publishing slate. The likes of Random House can survive a year very easily selling zero copies of new books because catalogue is so strong they have evergreen sellers on there.
Yeah, good point. Our generation right now has been watching Netflix more or less from the get-go, so we’re hoovering up every new show or movie that comes out if it aligns to our interests. If you start watching Netflix ten years from now, though, there will be a lot of content to catch up with.
If you start watching Netflix ten years from now, though, there will be a lot of content to catch up with.
I’m not sure it will work like that, I think people will always be watching the new stuff and only a few select older series will be among the big draws.
It’s easy to forget that just a few years ago the big trumpeted Netflix series were Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards, and you don’t hear anyone talk about either any more. Ditto all the Marvel series they had.
Partly I think that’s the effect of the Netflix ‘dump’ model giving each new show just a brief moment in the spotlight as new seasons debut, rather than extended exposure under the traditional weekly model. But partly I think it’s just human nature that people will want the new stuff rather than going back to old shows.
I think older shows definitely have their place for streaming services – the continued success of stuff like Friends shows that people will want those shows in the catalogue – but in terms of attracting and retaining subscribers I think those older shows that still have clout (in terms of troubling the most-watched lists) are probably the exception rather than the rule.
And I think the same will be true of old Netflix original material. It gets briefly talked about on release but I doubt a lot of it has staying power.
I don’t see people in 2030 getting excited over Tiger King, basically.
It can be two things I think.
The new stuff will always be the main attraction for attention, definitely, it always has been in every medium. The Bookseller will never lead on a story that Lord Of The Rings and Catch-22 are still available even though they may sell more that month than the new book that appears on their cover.
So new material will always be key to keep the brand alive and having attention paid to it.
However I think in 2030 the idea of ‘completing Netflix’ will be nigh on impossible. Disney + has relatively few new shows, although they get the headlines the depth of the catalogue is a major part of deciding to part with that $6.99 or however much it is.
So my belief is that investing $200m on a TV movie is partly to grab attention but also a good deal of building essential material into the catalogue. So when my 9 year old son goes to college in 10 years time and has a little money to pick one streaming platform it’ll be Netflix because there’ll be an endless mine of material to keep him interested.
In fact I’d say it’s a counterpoint to something like Tiger King, which is cheap to make but a zeitgeist show, like a lot of reality TV it shines briefly and brightly with very little lasting power. The reason why you’ll find entire episodes of BBC panel shows on Youtube but never more than a 30 second clip of Doctor Who. Their legal team knows what has the resale value.
I don’t see people in 2030 getting excited over Tiger King, basically.
Yeah, I don’t disagree, but like Gar says, there are shows and movies that are not as bound to a certain time. Orange Is the New Black may not be talked about anymore, but I am sure there are new people discovering it all the time. Doesn’t have to be the kind of huge audience it had in its prime, just a steady trickye now. Part of it will only be for a certain audience like Umbrella Academy or Black Mirror, but that audience will certainly watch it in ten years. And Netflix does have the advantage that a show doesn’t have to be the new hot thing for you to notice it – the Netflix algorithm will make sure that you do anyway.
Yeah, this all lines up with what I’m saying I think – in terms of the top ten shows the new stuff will dominate, but everything else provides a solid archive of shows for people to pick through. And one that will be diverse enough to cater for all tastes and give you a huge second layer of stuff to discover that will still be watched but won’t ever be topping the most-watched list.
For all that Netflix has done to bolster its content, it still isn’t at Disney+ levels of having such a gigantic back catalogue of attractive properties yet – but in time I could see it eventually matching their ratio of new releases to old stuff.
The Netflix algorithm doesn’t appear to know what to make of me.
…and that’s a good thing. Algorithms try to put you in a box; I’d rather discover new things randomly.
The Netflix algorithm doesn’t appear to know what to make of me.
…and that’s a good thing. Algorithms try to put you in a box; I’d rather discover new things randomly.
Sure, but the poor thing gets a bit confused sometimes.
On that note, there’s an awful lot of algorithms masquerading as people. They’re forever trying to tidy me into a box.
