Oh those “tensions” yeah… well, it’s not nearly the same thing is it? Last time those two countries went to war was in the early 1800’s… so yeah, 200 years ago… =/

Well it’s kinda crass to cast an Israeli to play THE Egyptian Queen, no matter the color of skin.

    It’s a fair point.

I think Cleopatra and Egypt as part of ancient history has become part of pop culture so much that for most people, the references of Elisabeth Tayler and Asterix and – as far as pharaos are concerned – the Mummy and whatnot are much closer than the connection to the real place that is Egypt today. I can see how this would be problematic to Egyptians today.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t expect historical German role to be cast with a German in a Hollywood movie. I mean, in Operation Valkyrie, there were like a handful of German actors in minor roles while all major nazi roles were played by Americans and Englishmen. Hitler ways played by a guy from Manchester.

  • #40942

Well listen it’s been 20 and change years since I lived in Egypt, but back then there was no lost love between the two countries AT ALL… even after 20 years, considering recent history, I doubt it’s changed all that much. If they go forward with this very ill-conceived idea, you can expect to hear about government mandated boycotts at the very least, I reckon… honestly they all should know better, but Gadot in particular should know better…

4 users thanked author for this post.
  • #40998

I’m not disagreeing, I think you’re probably right that this isn’t a great idea. And while I get how the typical Hollywood exec doesn’t even think of these real-world problems, what with Cleopatra mainly being a figure from movie history for them, Gadot really should know better.

Hey, how did you come to live in Egypt?

Battlestar Galactica Film Taps Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg to Pen Script – CBR link

X-Men franchise veteran Simon Kinberg is moving on to his next big franchise as writer and producer for the Battlestar Galactica film from Universal.

Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg will write and produce Universal Pictures’ Battlestar Galactica film.

Kinberg — who was heavily involved in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise — joins producer Dylan Clark in the film adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi series.

“Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” Kinberg said in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Three Battlestar Galactica series have aired on television since 1978, although it was Ronald D. Moore’s 2004 reimagining for Syfy that most fans gravitate towards. The series ran for four seasons, focusing on the core conflict between the humans and the Cylons, a cybernetic race created by humans that gained sentience. The show spawned a short-lived spinoff series Caprica, as well as the web series Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.

A reboot is also currently in the works for NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

Good question. Trailer looks shit, too, mainly just Bowie staring absent-mindedly or – shocking! – walking around in women’s clothes. And if they don’t have the rights to the music, why cast a musician? I think Jonny Flynn is great, but… this doesn’t seem to be.

Is it Jonny Flynn the singer? He acts too?

I saw him on a folk festival bill a while ago and didn’t think he was all that great, but most of the audience (notably the women) seemed to think he was the best thing since sliced bread. If he’s also a well-known actor, I guess that explains it.

  • #42233

I first became aware of him because he sings the theme song for Detectorists (and if anyone here foolishly has never seen Detectorists, I suggest you rectify that immediately!) and I was gobsmacked when he appeared in one episode, because I’d assumed he was some crusty old folk-singer, rather than the reasonably handsome young dude he is, but then he was in the recent adaptation of Emma as well, so I guess the acting thing has taken off for him.

  • #42237

Two of my friends recently got married and walked down the aisle to that song. It’s lovely. Just like the show itself.

It is. It’s our “comfort TV show” of choice – I think me and my girlfriend have watched all 3 seasons at least 4 times. I wish there was more of it. I also liked Mackenzie Crook’s Worzel Gummidge adaptation, which was in a similar vein, so I guess that’ll have to do for now.

It’s funny how these unassuming gentle sitcoms can get under your skin and you can end up feeling as close to the characters as any serious drama. Detectorists was one of those shows for me, and Rev before it.

  • #42528

I honestly forgot this franchise was still a thing.

  • #42534

The second film was very bad, and weirdly I say that having enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it because I was into the Potter lore and all that but it was uneven, rammed with exposition. It looked good, as all Potter movies do but as a screenwriter JK Rowling really regressed from a tepid first attempt.

  • #42560

I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts movie, but the second one was awful.

It’ll be interesting to see how quickly they recast the role, as they’re filming the movie right now, but Depp wasn’t supposed to film his scenes until 2021.

Colin Farrell might be done with The Batman by then; they can give the role back to him.

Skydance Media Sets Gal Gadot To Star In ‘Heart Of Stone’, Original Spy Franchise In Mold Of ‘Mission: Impossible’ & 007

  • #45314

    Most important bit about that:

The script is by Greg Rucka (The Old Guard) and Allison Schroeder, latter of whom was Oscar nominated for Hidden Figures. The film will be produced by Skydance Media’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, along with Gadot and her Pilot Wave producing partner Jaron Varsano, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. Skydance Media is keeping options open on whether this will be a theatrical or streaming bow.

Looks like Greg Rucka is a proper Hollywood screenwriter now. Which is very cool, nobody deserves it more than him.

One of Rucka’s strengths is writing strong female leads with character depth (including flaws): Queen & Country, Stumptown, Lazarus, Old Guard, Black Magick, even as far back as his breakout project Whiteout. I’m surprised at Gal Gadot, though; I assumed she would be looking for more mainstream roles rather than lock herself into another action franchise.

Surely something like this is as mainstream as it gets?

  • #45337

I think there’s an opportunity here for her. Ever since Angelina Jolie stopped doing action flicks, ScarJo has been the only female action star (well, with a bit of Charlize Theron). Gadot has a strong presence and can carry an action movie, so getting another movie like this (and possibly a franchise) under her belt is a good move.
