The new communism!
As long as they bring back Ronny Cox, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton too. All these guys should be retired, though.
I knew a retired Beverly Hills cop, though. He was incredibly wealthy compared to most cops. He eventually became chief of Culver City police which is a neighborhood/city kinda between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. He told lots of stories about being a cop at that time that were definitely not politically correct.
It would be funny if Axel Foley went to visit his old friends and they all had mansions. Except for Taggert who bought a defunct nuclear missile silo that he stocked with guns and supplies in preparation for the collapse of civilization.

Let’s not forget Serge (Branson Pinchot) who made a fortune opening a chain of espresso restaurants throughout Southern California before anyone outside of Seattle ever heard of Starbucks!

This film looks really good. Haven’t read the book but this makes me want to read it.
It’s an absolutely fantastic novel. It really said all there is to say about war already in 1929. Should be required reading in school for pretty much everybody. Good to see it getting another adaptation – there’s another one from the seventies and a quite famous one from the 1930, but neither quite captured the bleak matter-of-factness of novel. This one looks like it does.

‘Spawn’ Movie Finds New Writers With ‘Joker,’ ‘Captain America 4’ Scribes (Exclusive)
McFarlane’s version of the script was for a low-budget feature, but the new Spawn may get a slightly heftier budget, says McFarlane, who along with the team is seeking a studio partner.
As for this latest iteration of Spawn, McFarlane cites seeing the R-rated Joker in 2019 as a turning point, with him wondering, “Why not just go for the guy who wrote the movie?” He was pleasantly surprised that Silver said yes, and it snowballed from there, with the other writers joining in.
Well, if this was just a McFarlane script up to this point, I am glad to see some actually competent writers on this (even though Falcon & Winter Soldier was pretty fucking lame). Maybe it’ll actually get made then. (Not that I care, honestly.)
Remaking Barbarella isn’t a great idea. She’s too much of her time. And updating her will just make her be not-Barbarella. Just leave her alone, would be my advice if anyone was asking.
‘Spawn’ Movie Finds New Writers With ‘Joker,’ ‘Captain America 4’ Scribes (Exclusive)
I don’t think they will ever make this damn movie. Honestly, it doesn’t need to be a good movie. It wasn’t really a good comic book. Quality is not what people look for in Spawn!
Just embrace the guadiness and crap it onto the screen. Like they did with Venom. That was crap but it was fun crap.

James Cameron Says Marvel and DC Characters “Act Like They’re in College”
Scorcese… fellow.
What have you started?🤣
I get what they are saying like Cameron, Copolla, and so on. Even die hard MCU fans say the same thing about cookie cutter content.
But deal with it! 🤣
What are you going to do about it?
Only thing is to wait for franchise fatigue with the viewers. Not a one person boycott. 🤣
Did anybody watch Terminator or Titanic or Avatar because of the stellar character work involved?
James Cameron Says Marvel and DC Characters “Act Like They’re in College”
I think he’s not wrong, but I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing.
“When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college,” Cameron said. “They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
Avatar: The Way of Water is based on Cameron’s experiences as the father of five children. Whereas Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully and Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri took literal leaps of faith in the first movie, their decisions are now affected by having three children.
There’s more than one way to make movies, and I think Cameron actually knows that. He’s just drumming up publicity for Avatar 2 and he wants to emphasise the new direction he’s going for in that one. Which is fine.
It’s okay but I do think these guys are rather shortsighted in that cinema is not a battle to get what you like on screens. Superhero films are often flawed but they are keeping the business afloat in a rather shitty scenario. Spider-Man being a hit keeps cinemas open and gives Cameron a better chance of making Avatar 2 a hit as well.
30+ years ago I used to send numbers off to the BFI and in truth most films lost money for the cinema or at best broke even. Crocodile Dundee allowed us to show The Mission. If the commerciality of Crocodile Dundee wasn’t there, and we relied only on The Mission the cinema closes and sells no tickets for the latter.
It’s not new, it is a reality of the business that a handful of films each year make the profit, the industry always needs those hits to sustain everything else. However shit they may be. Transformers enables Tarantino, it’s just a fact.
James Cameron Says Marvel and DC Characters “Act Like They’re in College”
He may be right, but I’m still way more likely to watch Marvel’s upcoming movies than any of the Avatar sequels. Because if the first one is any indication they’ll be very technically impressive, over long snooze-fests. I’m sure there’s a very sizable audience for them, but I’m not among that set of demographics.
I thought the first one was “meh” and this one seems “meh” to me, too. I’ll be giving it a pass.
I thought the first one was “meh” and this one seems “meh” to me, too. I’ll be giving it a pass.
I think the visuals look incredible. It looks like a movie that will be a really vivid fantastical experience to let wash over you, regardless of how great the story is.

Clearly you’re also talking about the porn version.

Absolutely.
And while Avatar was one of his weaker stories (not movies, necessarily, but stories) overall, I just generally have great respect for James Cameron as a craftsman when it comes to telling stories. He is just very, very good at the dynamics of plot and character. His movie plots are always a little too predictable, but they just work so well.
So yeah, if I can, I want to watch that in a movie theatre. Totally.
‘Streets Of Rage’: Lionsgate Picks Up Feature Take Of Sega Videogame From ‘John Wick’s Derek Kolstad
‘Streets Of Rage’: Lionsgate Picks Up Feature Take Of Sega Videogame From ‘John Wick’s Derek Kolstad
I loved the SoR games but it feels a bit like Uncharted to me – the games were pastiches of a movie stereotype in the first place, so making a movie based on them feels like a photocopy of a photocopy.
Which is the inherent problem with most video game adaptations, the games makers take fairly generic movie ideas, make a fantastic game by immersing you in them and then try and reverse the process. Which by track record is not very successful. They persevere though.
I think it depends on the game. If you have a game where there’s a lot of originality in terms of characters and visuals then I think it lends itself better to a film adaptation – the Sonic movies have been successful, for example, and I imagine the Mario film will do OK.
I also think that games with a richer narrative will give adaptations a bit more to get their teeth into – so I expect the HBO adaptation of The Last Of Us to be pretty good, as there’s lots to explore there in terms of drama and character.
But as far as the games go, Streets of Rage is just a generic “last few good cops in a city gone bad” setup for lots of punching and kicking. Who knows, maybe that will give them a blank slate to do something interesting with it, but I’m not holding my breath.
(As long as they have a scene where the battered hero is near death at the hands of his enemies, then eats an entire roast chicken and instantly recovers, I’ll be happy.)
I think it depends on the game.
Sure. I agree there are exceptions which is why I used ‘most’. Cartoon characters can translate and I also expect the Last of Us has a good chance of being quality because it is much more narrative and character led than 99% of games.
There are more Streets of Rage type adaptations though where we are doing the photocopy thing. Warcraft for example, while Duncan Jones tried an original take by showing both sides of the conflict, is the most generic fantasy setup out there – “The realm of Stormwind” is the kind of stuff you make up in school.
Outside of the material made for kids cartoons we are still waiting really for a big commercial and critical hit in the way comics adaptations have managed a fair amount.

Yeah Uncharted ended up not really making much of an impact despite being a popular gaming franchise with a big-name cast.
I think TLoU might turn things around, but we’ll see.
SOR as a movie is a fuckin’ terrible idea… it sounds like something that would’ve been done in the 90’s… I bet it’s not gonna have to do anything with the games except for the title and maybe some names (not that there’s a lot to go on in the first place)… shit, we’ll be lucky if characters even look like the characters in the game.
Speaking of videogame movies… I’m still hoping one day we’ll get a good Starcraft movie… the VFX is at least there now to make it a reality.
In the end I think the two strongest elements in people loving a film are character and plot. Many great games, by design, don’t have much of either, the lead character is intentionally a cypher for you to inhabit as the player. Game dynamics invite repetition for you to get into the gameplay which isn’t ideal for an exciting plot. They borrow a lot from film and literature because official license or not a lot of what they are selling is “you loved Star Wars/Goodfellas/Dawn of the Dead – we’ll let you play in that world”.
There are a few games where they are more story lead like TLoU or most of the Final Fantasy series where I’d happily watch something pretty faithful to the game but for most it doesn’t apply. Like I loved playing Skyrim, 100+ hours attests to that, but I have no interest in seeing a film of it really.
So for me that’s why after so many attempts with IP people love they struggle to deliver. Whereas comics, not just superhero ones, with a fraction of the audience and brand identity, have a string of successes because they also need character and plot.
Disney Shocker! Bob Iger Back As CEO, Bob Chapek Out
Takes a two year sabbatical while the other guy has to contend with the impact of the pandemic on Disney’s core business, not to mention the streaming service money pit and the Fox debt, then gets to swoop back in as the returning hero (even though he caused most of the non-pandemic issues the company is still dealing with)? That’s some Lex Luthor level moves right there.
They woke Harrison Ford up from his nap for that?
So, like, is the new Indy movie taking place in 1981 or something. Because that’s around when it should be based on Ford’s age…but an Indy movie set in the 80s feels weird.
So, like, is the new Indy movie taking place in 1981 or something.
Looks like the parade in the trailer during the horseback scene could be both a moon landing celebration and a Vietnam protest. So maybe 69?
Harrison Ford might be 80 but he looks pretty good on it, so can probably get away with playing Indy 10 years younger than his “real” age.
Also, it looks like there’s going to be plenty of CGI de-ageing used in this movie, so all bets are off in terms of how old he looks.
It is set in 1969. I agree with Dave that Ford can pass for 70 easily enough. John Rhys-Davies doesn’t look bad for 78 either.
Although it flicks back and forth in the trailer I read last week the de-aging scenes (or at least the ones to make him look 1980s Ford rather than any tweaks to run out a few wrinkles) are all in a prologue, in the style of the River Pheonix flashback of Last Crusade.

I’ve heard some purported spoilers for the film that suggest it goes further than that, but who knows. Either way the de-ageing looks pretty good from what little we see in the trailer.
a moon landing celebration
There are set photos of banners saying “welcome home Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins” so a moon landing parade is a good shout.
Anyway, bear + cocaine =…

I thought you were still talking about Harrison Ford for a minute.
Anyway, bear + cocaine =…
Well, the trailer looks kind of awesome. Most impressive thing about it all is that they somehow got a budget to properly animate a bear and everything with that idea. This is probably due to the success of Blumhouse, isn’t it? Suddenly you can do the kind of movie that would have used to be a Troma film and have Elizabeth Banks directing it, starring Ray Liotta and Alden Ehrenreich.
Anyway, I will certainly see this in some form, but my hopes aren’t too high because the script is by the guy who wrote the sequel to the Babysitter (which was alright, but not half as good as the first one, which was a pleasant surprise).

I assume they’re still profitable, although going by the last couple it is getting borderline, but, geez, come on people.
Who knows, maybe the dialogue in the non-English releases is incredibly well written and elevates them into incredible works of art. Really finding the nuance in the scene with the giant robot testicles.

It was a clever meta-commentary on the films being enormous bollocks.
The fact that nobody is talking about the Millennium Falcon cockpit leads me to believe I imagined it
Yeah that was a definite deliberate nod. But then Lucas and his design team presumably based the look of the Falcon cockpit on those old aircraft, so maybe it’s a case of coming full circle.

Avatar 2: The Secret of the Ooze makes $1 billion at the box office… and is only halfway to breaking even.
Pretty messed up.
So apparently this isn’t entirely true – it seems the 2 billion quoted covers the costs of the three planned sequels as opposed to just Avatar 2. The budget for Avatar 2 alone is somewhere between 200 and 400 million so it’s probably either making a profit on its own merits or close to it at this point.
Ah, I see. Good to know things have not gone completely off the rails.
That makes sense.
Hey, for a Cameron movie, 200-400 million is a bargain. I mean, 200 million is what he spent on Titanic in the nineties.
I read it would be a billion to break even on this movie (which would put it closer to the $400m end of the estimate). Cameron to be fair has pulled it off again.
Yep. Those big budget have always paid off with Cameron. With this one, it was a bit of luck that there’s absolutely no competition at the moment. Things might’ve looked very differently if Avatar 2 had had to go up against a Marvel movie or something.
In the last couple of years there haven’t been too many tentpole movies. It’s basically been Top Gun, Marvel’s output and Avatar this year. I think they are canny enough not to clash, especially now Disney own Avatar and Fox.
Cameron also likes the Christmas release. Titanic did that as well as the first Avatar when common wisdom was you release big films in summer.
Yeah Star Wars has used Christmas and Lord of the Rings.
Potter used the November slot (mostly, they went on an 18 month cycle for a while so some were summer films) that’s also become popular in the last 20 years and where Disney put Wakanda Forever this year.
The useful thing with a Christmas slot is January is a bit of a dead period for that kind of film (Oscar bait is common) so leaves you a long run in until maybe a Valentine’s release – where the likes of Deadpool and Kingsman were placed.
Sounds like Jeremy Renner is in a bad way.
Jesus. I hope he’ll be okay.
No connection to the original three movies or the 2013 remake but this looks like it could be a decent wee nasty movie.
No connection to the original three movies or the 2013 remake but this looks like it could be a decent wee nasty movie.
Well, apart from quite a few of the motives popping up. Doing a new thing while paying homage is probably a good way to go with this.
And yeah, it does look very decent. Definitely going to watch that one.
Renfield basically looks like if Guillermo from What We Do in the Shadows got his own movie. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and the Nic Cage casting was of course a stroke of genius. Looks like it could be a lot of fun. The writer also wrote a lot of Rick & Morty episodes, so that’s good. It also says it’s based off an idea by Robert Kirkman, so at this point the guy’s presumably getting paid a lot of money to rip off Taika Waitit and contribute nothing else. Must be a good life.

Haven’t seen Women Talking, it’s not out here for a few weeks.
So Avatar: The Way of Water has cracked $2 billion. I saw some different people talking about this and the fact that it doesn’t seem to be a huge topic of discussion about the film itself, outside of its box office take. Furthermore, I saw some people on Facebook saying that while they saw, they really don’t don’t remember much about it.
To be honest, I really haven’t seen much discussion in the media or in socail media regarding the movie.
Yeah, I think stuff like this shows that social media (and media more broadly) isn’t always a 1:1 match for what’s happening in the real world. Clearly a lot of people have been interested enough to go and see the movie regardless of the social media buzz.
Avatar has always reminded me a bit of ‘granny’ hit records in the 80s and 90s. Like that Bryan Adams ‘Robin Hood’ song. Nobody I know ever admitted to liking it or buying it but by fuck it kept selling by the truckload.
The thing is, most people just go to the movies, watch something for a couple of hours and go home. They don’t talk about it on social media, they don’t delve into the deeper meaning of the symbolism or the political undertones, or even think about how it fits into a broader media franchise.

100%. I have said it before I know, but when I worked at a cinema a good percentage just wanted an evening out and asked at the box office which film to watch and we replied whatever was the most popular at the time.
Of course that doesn’t answer huge box office, it clearly isn’t just people all wandering up or we’d get the same returns every week. It is an indicator though of how the vast majority are pretty casual viewers. We’ve had endless debate here about Zach Snyder in the DCU but I would be making a generous estimate that 5% of those who saw any of those films knew who directed them.
My dad used to run a sports clothes distribution company, I used to work there as a holiday job for my last few years of school and through college. The year Titanic came out, he had to hire some guys to help out with sorting out a big mess up from one of his suppliers. For the month or so they were with us they went to see Titanic at least once a week, it was just what they wanted to see at the cinema I guess. And like, I went to see Titanic and thought it was a great movie but I was fine with going to see other movies.
Also when it was their turn to choose the music in the warehouse it was invariably a pirate radio station that played a techno remix of My Heart Will Go On at least once each hour and had a tendency to do shout outs to people going into or back to prison…
