Taika Waititi to Direct ‘The Incal’ Film Adaptation

The filmmaker is attached to direct and co-write a feature adaptation of The Incal, the seminal 1970s comic book creation from Alejandro Jodorowsky and the late artist Moebius. Waititi is teaming with his What We Do in the Shadows and Flight of the Conchords collaborator Jemaine Clement, as well as Peter Warren, to pen the script.

No studio or streaming service is yet attached to the project and The Incal movie marks the first time publisher Humanoids has delved into the world of film.

Hmm. That’s a red flag there.

Credit to Hollywood reporter for crediting Moebius. A lot of angry comics artists on Twitter today that most pieces left him out.

Ironic really because for me the Incal story is not great, it very much feels like a lot of random encounters being made up as they go along but the artwork is sublime.

‘Eternals’ Clocks Tepid $71M Opening, A Wake-Up Call For MCU; ‘Red Notice’ Box Office – Deadline

Box Office: ‘Dune’ Survives ‘Eternals’ As ‘No Time To Die’ Nears $670M (forbes.com)

Eternals met lower end of the revised estimations after the reviews came in. Dune probably won’t reach $100 MM domestically in the US, but that is primarily due to WB’s desire to use it to promote HBO Max. Theatrical box office doesn’t matter as much so it is probably above expectations in that regard.

‘Squid Game’ And ‘Black Widow’ Lord Over Seinfeld And Chapelle In Nielsen’s SVOD Ratings (forbes.com)

In the Nielsen ratings for the week of October 4 through October 10, Black Widow became “free” to Disney DIS +3.1%+ subscribers and thus surged to the top of the SVOD movies chart. The Scarlett Johansson MCU prequel opened in theaters and on Disney+ via “Premier Access” ($30 to rent) concurrently this summer, where the film earned $380 million worldwide in global box office and around $125 million globally via the Premier Access avenue. So that the film earned “only” 676 million minutes, compared to 815 million minutes for Cruella and 1.078 billion minutes for Raya and the Last Dragon when those titles became “free,” is likely related to the larger number of households that paid $30 for Black Widow versus the previous two titles.

So, certainly a lot of interest for Marvel still out there, just that ETERNALS is more similar to the divisive response the Snyderverse DC movies received – except those movies still make up most of the box office returns for all the DC movies. Only Aquaman has done better than any movie directed exclusively by Snyder, but, like Wonder Woman, Aquaman definitely emerged from the Snyderverse as well.

  • #78098

Well, to be fair, Aquaman emerged from the Snyderverse, yes, but it’s a lot more separated from Snyder than say WW or SQ1, which were not only produced by Snyder, but also used a lot of his cast, plans & even crew, as far as I understand, particularly WW. Wan’s Aquaman did mostly its own thing, on the other hand.

But yes, the more Snyder heavy DC movies are certainly the most profitable after Aquaman, which is kind of funny.

  • #78103

Well, the article also points out that the Eternals had the second best opening for a Hollywood movie this year and opened ahead of Black Widow and Shang-Chi, so it hardly appears to be a disaster.  Anyway, trying to make the Eternals a success was always going to be difficult.  Still, even if it tanks from here on out there’s only five weeks until Spider-Man is released and no reason to doubt there won’t be a positive buzz about that one.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #78109

ehhh… no it opened behind Venom, BW, Shang chi… I mean it still did well enough for a 2021 movie, but yeah.

Also, it’s not going to China either…

  • #78111

Still, 1 in 26 is a pretty sound rate.

More important will be how Doctor Strange, Thor and Wakanda fare next year.  If they underperform then it would speak to a bigger issue with the franchise than just one odd entry not quite working out that well.  Right now, the Wakanda movie sounds like a hot mess but there’s still time to pull that one together.

I think box office/industry analysts still really don’t know what to expect from any movies these days. When will the general public actually be comfortable returning to movie theaters? Will another covid surge come along and derail things? Has the pandemic simply altered the way people want to consume their entertainment?

I’m sure the hope is that by next summer people will be ready to get back into movie theaters, but the simple fact is things may never get back to those pre-pandemic day for the movie industry. No one really knows. So it’s hard to know what under performing even means right now.

  • #78133

I mean, I don’t know… Venom 2 just came out recently… so did Shang Chi… comparing with those 2 should be fair enough.

  • #78138

Sort of.  Venom 2 is a sequel to an established hit movie with a well-known character.  Shang-Chi less so but one would imagine a martial arts action movie to be an easier sell than whatever the Eternals are.  Plus, the roll-out of all of these movies has been impacted by various restrictions and covid warnings in various markets.  There isn’t really the same level playing field as the pre-covid years.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #78149

Yeah, exactly. We really don’t know was the atmosphere is going to be come Summer 2022. Could be that more people (especially kids and teens) are vaccinated and people are more comfortable going to the movies. Or it could be another covid surge hits or that people would just rather wait a couple of months for a lot of these movies to drop on Disney+. Really hard to say right now what kind of box office expectations to set, but certainly this winter and the coming summer should give us good data in order to start speculating on box office moving forward.

I see instances in that Matrix trailer that go back to the first film.

That’s been done before like The Force Awakens with A New Hope and even Another 48 Hours with the original 48 Hours.

I hope this “scenes of going back to the original” approach is done better this time.

  • #80328

This time it looks like they’re building in the idea of the original as being a movie within the reality of this new film – you can see it projected on the wall in some scenes in the trailer.

Can’t wait to see how this all comes together.

  • #80332

I’ve seen a few people suggest that it’s going to be a repudiation of the whole Red Pill thing, and talk about how revolutionary texts are seen as little more than aesthetic – like there’s a shot of the guy who’s aping Smith lines with his mouth sealing up and he doesn’t look distressed, he’s doing it because it looked cool in the first movie.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #80343

Ehhh… I don’t know about all that… I just hope they do something really interesting with the whole concept, because if not it’ll end up feeling like a shit load of “remember that?” and that’s kinda lame… and the Watchowskis’ track record post-Matrix is shaky at best, so I’m more wary than excited.

Audiences are tiring of superhero movies. Will Hollywood care?

    https://qz.com/2099140/fans-are-getting-tired-of-superhero-movies-survey-says/?utm_source=YPL

  • #80378

An unsurprisingly misleading title for that poll. The tl;dr is that 41% of movie goers are enjoying superhero movies and will continue to see them in theaters, 23% are enjoying them but get a little tired of the volume of them, 26% just don’t like superhero movies.

The poll isn’t tracking any change in this so far all we know those numbers could be the same as a year ago or better or worse. It’s not speaking or highlighting any actual trends in how audiences feel about superhero movies. At least not from what I can gather from that brief write up.

So to answer the question of will Hollywood care? I’d say…care about what?

  • #80832

I thought it was wrapped up in the first movie.

It did and to me that was essentially the problem with Kingsman 2. Millar likes (and is very good at) his elevator pitch concepts and this one was James Bond meets My Fair Lady. The sequel fell into just Bond parody because the journey from council estate chancer to superspy is concluded in the first story.

I liked the comic sequel Rob Williams did but it also had the same flaw that once the character journey was complete it also fell into Bond parody territory, it was just a better executed one than the film version.

Ugh. Went to see No Way Home in my local cinema. Sitting there for almost two hours before they told us it wasn’t happening, and to go home. Apparently their file with the movie on it is corrupted, and they can’t get it fixed. I’d have thought this would be something you would test before you let people in to see the movie, but nope!

The most annoying part is that pretty much every screening in the city for the next week is already sold out, so those of us who booked for the early opening day screenings are all out of luck.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #80844

    That’s bad luck, sorry Paul.

In the old pre-digital days I had a few bad cinema experiences where the film strip melted and we had to walk out of the movie halfway through as they didn’t have another copy to load. But I guess digital isn’t without its flaws either.

3 users thanked author for this post.
  • #80853

Paul’s story reminds me of going to see ANT-MAN in the theaters years ago, and about a third of the way into the film the screen suddenly went blank. After a quarter-hour of fussing, management announced that there was “something wrong” with their copy, and our tickets were all refunded. A couple weeks later we went back to the same theater, and the same thing happened again.

Not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

  • #80910

I’d have thought this would be something you would test before you let people in to see the movie, but nope!

There’d be a limited window to do it. My friend who runs a cinema chain shared how it works when The Force Awakens was coming out, the films are downloaded a few days before release date but they have encryption that releases them at midnight on the official day. He had pics of the file sat there on the server with a big padlock next to it.

Unless you went to a midnight showing they would have had a chance in the morning to check it could play. I have no idea how often a corrupted file happens though, you may have been a ‘one in a million’ style scenario so they don’t check by default. (Although Jerry’s example suggests not).

  • #80978

Plot twist: it was still playing, just reduced to the size of a single pixel in the bottom of the screen.

Well… though it is odd for any Rob Zombie movie to be less than R rated, it’s such an interesting collision of styles. Like David Fincher directing the Addams Family or Christopher Nolan making a new Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Put Tim Burton or Guillermo Del Toro on the Munsters and it makes sense, but Rob Zombie is more intriguing though he’s not really that good a director.

Still, I imagine there might be a lot of restrictions imposed by the studio. Like when Guy Ritchie did Sherlock Holmes or King Arthur. You could see that he was the director but they really weren’t fully a Guy Ritchie movie.

  • #87274

A weird, R-rated Rob Zombie Munsters movie sounds more intriguing to me than a weird PG version. That said, it’s probably good that he’s branching out from his usual thing. Because his usual thing isn’t very good, generally. Might help him grow creatively. So, while not something I’m interested in, best of luck to him and all involved.

  • #87374

So… anyone really looking forward to Avatar 2? Can’t wait?

What is most interesting to me is that it may be the biggest sequel of all time. In the works for over a decade. At least 3 years of production. Biggest director of all time who came to prominence mostly for the two most successful sequels of all time (which were followed by the least successful sequels of all time, too). Disney is building an entire theme park world around it.

And we’re hearing less about it than we were for DUNE or AVENGERS: ENDGAME at around the same time before release. No leaks from the set. Very little promotion.

It’s a surprisingly disciplined production as far as information control, so I think the apparent lack of interest much be intentional.

I’m more intrigued than excited. I’m expecting the buzz to be pretty huge when we get closer to release and actually start seeing footage. At the end of the day I’m not going to bet against James Cameron. I wish he hadn’t disappeared down this Avatar sinkhole, but he has, so I can only think he’s going to do something special with it.

  • #87377

I’d completely forgotten it was coming, that’s how excited I am.

I didn’t and still don’t see the appeal of Avatar. It was cleverly made and pretty to look at, but the story and characters were so pedestrian that … well, actually I can’t comment because I can’t really remember a thing about them. That’s how interesting it was.

(Sorry, I don’t usually like to talk down things that other people apparently love, but I genuinely don’t see why this one was/is loved.)

Sorry, I don’t usually like to talk down things that other people apparently love, but I genuinely don’t see why this one was/is loved.

I’m not even sure that it is. For such a massively successful film it’s not like Avatar fandom is really much of a thing, certainly not with any kind of profile like other major franchises of the moment (Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter etc. – even Dune).

It will be interesting to see how the second Avatar goes down, but I could see it failing to get anywhere near the first – which, let’s not forget, got a lot of mileage out of the novelty of its 3D effects at the start of the last 3D fad, which is basically now over.

Having said that, I also agree that I wouldn’t bet against Cameron and I hope that he’s got something very special lined up after all this time.

The movie came out in December 2009 so it has been a little over 12 years since it was first released. That is almost a generation of movie goers. I could see adults wanting to revisit it for the sake of childhood nostalgia. (“I loved that movie when I was a kid! It will be cool to revisit this universe.”)

I’m sure the CGI will be top-notch and probably (hopefully!) a few steps above what we’ve been getting lately but nowadays, CGI is so commonplace. Just aout every TV show and movie uses it to some extent and you don’t even notice it. A lot of it is quite banal (backgrounds, signage, etc.) but it is still CGI. Animated movies get better and better. It will be interesting to see if it breaks through the noise.

I thought the first movie was great to look at, but the story was very shallow and the characters weren’t very compelling. It felt like i was watching someone play a well-rendered videogame.

One last thing to consider: As it appears that we are coming out of COVID and all the restrictions, this movie could do very well as people will want to go to a theater and see something spectacular as it is now “safe” to do so.

The problem I have with AVATAR is that it didn’t have any strong pay-offs that are memorable. All the other movies have great set-ups that pay off strongly throughout the films so that you distinctly remember those moments. However, AVATAR just seems to meander through the story. In fact, it feels like it starts too early. I can’t think what I would cut, but it seems like it took forever to really get moving.

it didn’t have any strong pay-offs that are memorable

Toruk Makto? That was an insane payoff for me. Maybe that’s not the kind of payoff you mean though.

It’s interesting to me that I was having a discussion about the (dis-)importance of Avatar with Tom earlier today, and while we were still on the topic I checked in here and saw that Jonny had posted almost verbatim some of our discussion points about it. Synchronicity!

As Tom said to me, it’s fairly evident the movie has lost its momentum and hasn’t really stayed with people the same way other properties, particularly James Cameron properties, has. To exemplify this, he asked med if I’ve seen an Avatar meme, like ever. Interesting metric of memorability, if it’s memeable it’s stayed with people. I think that checks out. Not foolproof, but it’s something.

Then again, I’m very much looking forward to the sequels and I rewatch Avatar fairly regularly. Like, once every other year at least.

Mayo and Kermode are almost certainly going to another venue that will pay them more for largely the same show (my guess is Global who have poached a few BBC staff in the last month, maybe Spotify). It’s made for the BBC by an independent production company so I’d assume they can even keep the same features.

They should just forget about all the weird CGI shit they’re doing right now to bring Skywalker to life and just give it to Stan. And reboot the universe while they’re at it.

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo sitting in front of a projector

Looks like Kermode and Mayo are going indie, releasing their show themselves rather than signing up with a media company. It only has Apple and Spotify links on the webpage but people in the comments have signed up via different pod platforms.

Will Smith’s Biggest Franchise Canceled After Chris Rock Slap?

the Academy will turn a blind eye to rapists but not a man who slaps another man on stage.

I think that by giving Smith the Oscar minutes later it managed to show that it was happy to turn a blind eye to both.

Career prospects is a different thing altogether though. These scandals definitely have more of an impact there. I’m sure that Will Smith will still have a career after all this, but like lots of other scandal-hit figures (like Polanski or Woody Allen) it may end up less healthy than it once was.

I suspect they didn’t have the time to re-run the poll without him in the running.

They gave Polanski an Oscar like 24 years after he fled the US though.

I do think Smith will be fine, because really this is a storm in a teacup. It’s just interesting to see how this is almost entirely predicated on public reaction rather than any sort of principles

I’m not sure. At the end of the day, an assault was committed live on camera during the Oscars, and that’s not nothing.

I think that a lot of the sense of it being an overreaction and/or entirely about the social media/media reaction is that outside of the incident itself, there’s been very little more to go on outside a couple of short statements from the Academy, Smith and Rock. And while everyone waits for something more tangible to happen, the void has been filled with endless tweets and hot takes and analyses that don’t actually contribute much to the conversation, which makes it all feel completely trivial, even though there is actually something significant at the heart of it. It’s just been dwarfed by all the hot air of the coverage.

All they have to do is make a Will Smith / Chris Rock movie with them as whacky feuding neighbours and then their biggest problem will be where to keep the millions of dollars they’ll make.

This is absolutely what they’ll do, it’ll be like that new Nichola Cage movie.

True – like Lorcan posted, the companies involved will follow what makes sense financially rather than any moral principle. It’s show business, and celebrities at this level are also businesses themselves who have many people depending upon their bankability.

On top of that, it is a business of crafting narratives, so there are a lot of people waiting for the resolution of this story because that is the next step in the story formula. Again, it is “real life” but it is also a kind of “reality TV” too.

The victim of assault should definitely make a film with his assaulter🤨.

It’s already being called “slapgate” which is indicative of how seriously the entertainment media is taking it (as in not really).

The interesting thing is that I can’t find who was the first person to call it slapgate. It just happened a week ago so you’d think that would be pretty easy to search.

Maybe this article from Variety: Slapgate Is Chris Rock’s Defining Moment – Variety

I don’t see Will Smith losing his Oscar. If they do rescind it, they also need to claw back every statue given to Harvey Weinstein, Roman Polanski, Mel Gibson, and other people who have done far worse than slap a fellow actor on live television. Personally, I would love to see that happen but it won’t.

If they do take away Smith’s Oscar and no one else’s, that permanently destroys the Academy’s credibility. I honestly think that they only people who truly care about the Oscars (and other awards) are those in entertainment industry. I believe if they stopped airing award shows, the average person wouldn’t miss them in the least. I don’t think if a film, television show, or song has won an award or not really matters to most people.

As to Will Smith’s career, he’ll be in “Hollywood jail” for a while. He may go to “rehab” to deal with his “issues”. He’ll keep a low profile for a few years. He will then be interviewed by Oprah, around the same time a new project will be announced. He will slowly rebuild his career.

  • #88969

Yeah, he’ll be fine. He’s still got the power of the Scientologists behind him.

I think one thing it reminds me of is Alain De Botton’s case about visual news. How people react far less to reports and numbers than they do to what they can see.

We’re seeing it today in the Ukraine story where it’s no real surprise that Russia killed civilians, they have been bombing pretty indiscriminately for weeks, but video of a street strewn with dead bodies hits to the gut.

So I think we are really overreacting to the Smith thing compared to other worse offences from Oscar winners but it has that visceral effect because everyone saw it, most people will only know the full stories of what Polanski or Weinstein did if they read rather lengthy articles.

It is wrong but I have to confess I listened to a podcast last week about the military coup and in Myanmar last year and had forgotten it had happened (and it isn’t that far away from me) yet I remember the shock I felt when a kid called into a Saturday morning show and asked Matt Bianco why they were ‘so fucking shit’.
