So it appears that Zack Snyder has a three-hour Director’s Cut of “Rebel Moon”

Snyder needs to learn how to edit (and storytell in general, but editing is part of that process). Rebel Moon is already split into two movies, and it’s on Netflix, so he probably had full control and final cut. Yet he still somehow has a director’s cut that adds another hour?

Why he didn’t just develop it as a 6 episode limited series is beyond me.

I think that doesn’t happen is the same reason as for all the other 2-part films – and are those back after many years, Dune, Mission Impossible, Fast X, now Rebel Moon.

Telling a story in six 40-45 min pieces has a very different flow to telling it in two 120-135 min halves.

And let’s be honest here, Snyder would have a “Director’s Cut” for each episode as well.

‘Cause it’s become his gimmick or his thing… makes sense from a marketing perspective, specially if they’re planning to release a physical edition, which is almost guaranteed…

    This looks pretty great:

I don’t think I’ve seen any of Rebecca Miller’s other movies, but I can’t see a way this won’t at least be very good fun.

I’ve seen two of them. Maggie’s Plan was an okay movie that was elevated by starring Greta Gerwig and Ethan Hawke, The Ballad of Jack and Rose was a bad movie that even Daniel Day Lewis (Miller’s husband) couldn’t save.

    This one looks awesome:

It’s only the second full-length movie of a Norwegian director, Kristoffer Borgli, but at least from the trailer it feels very confident. It’s very Kaufman-esque, obviously, but that’s more than fine with me. Cage looks great.

Ridley Scott’s Reaction To New Alien Movie Revealed By Director – Screen Rant

Fede Álvarez reveals that he sent his new Alien movie to Ridley Scott, despite warnings from everyone that he can be a very tough critic.

Ridley Scott’s reaction to Fede Álvarez’s forthcoming Alien: Romulus movie has been revealed, and it bodes well for the next installment in the franchise. The film series initially started off in 1979 with Scott’s classic Alien, which follows a crew in deep space being hunted by the Xenomorph that has infiltrated their ship. After the first movie, the franchise went on to produce three other sequels that were directed by other talented directors and several other spinoffs, most notably the Alien vs. Predator series. In 2012, Scott directed two prequel films for the franchise, and in March 2022, it was announced that Álvarez would be directing a new standalone Alien movie that’s set to hit theaters soon.

Now, according to Collider, while Álvarez was speaking to Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023, he revealed that he went through the intense process of sending the new Alien movie to Scott in order to get his feedback. The Uruguayan filmmaker explained that he wanted Scott to be the first person to see it, even though he’d heard he’s a tough critic. Thankfully, Scott loved the movie, adding that he thought the dialogue in particular was great. Read Álvarez’s full comments below:

“I wanted him to see it before anybody. And everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on ‘Blade Runner [2049],’ which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work… I asked him about the new ‘Top Gun’ and he’s like ‘meh.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he was like, ‘My brother’s was original and this is like eh.’ He really respected it, but you could see how tough he was. So I was like, ‘There’s no way I win this one. Even if he didn’t ask for it, I was gonna go there and sit at a table and look at him and get it. Even if he was gonna say, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and see him in the eye. I didn’t want to get an email where it says ‘Ridley says…’

And then he walks into the room and he did say, ‘Fede, what can I say? It’s f**king great.’ For me, it was like… My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, whom I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made, but particularly something like this… and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of the best compliments he said was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!”

A stamp of approval from a filmmaker like Scott, especially considering that he started off the Alien franchise in the first place, bodes really well for Álvarez’s latest installment. Speculation about a new Alien movie first gained momentum back in 2019, after the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by the Walt Disney Company. In early 2022, Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus was officially confirmed to be on the way, and while it was initially scheduled to be released on Hulu, that changed earlier this year, and the movie has now been scheduled for release in theaters on August 16, 2024.

The talented Cailee Spaeny, who stars in this year’s Priscilla, leads the cast for this forthcoming movie, playing a similarly brave protagonist to Ellen Ripley. She is joined by other names including Archie Reneaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), David Jonsson (Industry), and Aileen Wu.

While the Alien movies over the years have generally focused on scientists, soldiers, or corporate employees who have to engage in heated battles against Xenomorphs, there hasn’t been any official confirmation of a detailed plot for Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus. However, seeing as Scott has expressed his satisfaction, there should be optimism that the movie will be worthwhile when it finally hits theaters next year.

Looks pretty great. I really liked the last one.

  • #113723

I didn’t like the last one at all, so I hope this is more of a comedy and less naked reverence for the original movie. I also hope they realise that Mckenna Grace is a much better actor than Finn Wolfhard.

I do like all the new cast they’ve added (James Acaster?!), and am glad there seems to be a lot of them Ghostbusting in the trailer.

    We’ve already had one sequel:

A sequel, The Return of Spinal Tap, was broadcast and released on video in 1992 to promote Break Like the Wind. It consisted mostly of footage from an actual Spinal Tap concert at the Royal Albert Hall. In it the “Stonehenge” joke from the original movie is referenced, as the new, large prop is instead too big to get into the venue.

That one was terrible. This feels like a bad idea and completely unnecessary.

    Some relevant new trailers.

I kinda have to get past a Furiosa thing without Charlize Theron, and I’m generally not into prequels.
But then again, I do trust that George Miller will have made a movie that will be awesome to watch, so, you know.

    Final Dune trailer:

I am so fucking excited for this.

I will always be grateful to George Lucas for the original Star Wars trilogy, which was a game changer in so many ways, from the sweeping universal scope to the Shakespearean storyline all the way down to the dents and scuffs on the landspeeders and droids. But…

…I still cringe at some of the characters, dialogue, acting, and SFX in the prequel trilogy (JarJar? Hayden Christiansen? Ninja Yoda?). And whatever Crystal Skull was, it was NOT a continuation of the Indiana Jones trilogy, and I do not personally know anyone who has watched it recently and said, Hey, I appreciate this now!

But, yes, THANK YOU George Lucas for making movies fun again in 1977!

My expectations weren’t high, but disappointing to see Rebel Moon is apparently another failure from Zack Snyder – Part One currently at 24% on Rotten Tomatoes (0 from Top Critics), and a dire 32 on Metacritic.

A shame, as it has a great cast, and I’d like a good original SF movie.

Rebel Moon Part One review: Zack Snyder’s Netflix epic is a borderline incoherent shambles

The ‘Justice League’ director’s cut filmmaker has made his own version of a Star Wars movie, only filled with motivational speeches, sexual violence and Charlie Hunnam stumbling his way through a soon-to-be-infamous Irish accent

What? Critics shitting on Snyder? Say it ain’t so… in other news, water is wet.

Also, is a $166 mil “massively expensive” for what amounts to around 2 cgi heavy movies of 3 hours each, not counting the extended editions?

Anyways, I’ll just watch it for myself, although to be fair, I didn’t particularly like Army of the Dead, so we’ll see… However I have no doubt it’s not as horrible as critics say it is.

It’s incredibly cheap for a movie that’d have a proper theatrical run and make its money back there, but it’s a massive investment for Netflix.

Brad Pitt Reuniting With Quentin Tarantino In Final Film ‘The Movie Critic’: The Dish

EXCLUSIVE: Quentin Tarantino will be reuniting for the third time with Brad Pitt in the director’s final film The Movie Critic. Unclear if Pitt will play the title character, but I think he is. Last time out, Pitt won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and he also starred for Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds. I also think Sony Pictures will be back as the studio distributing the film, with Stacey Sher producing and a 2025 release eyed.

you know…an honest telling of Michael Jackson’s life story would make a hell of a film, from the family dynamics of his childhood to his solo mega-success in the 1980s to his increasingly obsessive behavior up to his tragic death just prior to his planned comeback. With the right screenwriter and director, this could be a major film.

Or you could do a glossy sanitized version like MJ: The Musical currently running on Broadway. In which case I’ll just listen to THRILLER and BAD on my headphones.

I remember when Sasha Baron Cohen wanted to do an R-rated biopic of Freddie Mercury. It would have been very explicit and revealing. I think the band got scared and “to protect his legacy”, we got the highly sanitized and watered down “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

I truly doubt we’ll ever get an unsanitized biopic of MJ’s life.

Yeah, in a better world, that kind of movie would get made, one where you can sympathise for the little kid with the abusive dad and cheer for the musical genius and turn away in horror from the child rapist that he became, and that movie could explore the reasons why he was able to do that to so many kids without any repercussions during his lifetime.

Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler & More Confirmed To Join Ari Aster’s A24 Pic ‘Eddington’ – Deadline

Ari Aster, the visionary filmmaker behind horror pics Hereditary and Midsommar and last year’s darkly comic Beau Is Afraid, has locked in his starriest cast yet for his next A24 film, Eddington. Actors set to join the previously announced Joaquin Phoenix include Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), Emma Stone (fresh off her second Oscar win for Poor Things), Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Dune: Part Two‘s Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range), Micheal Ward (Top Boy), and Clifton Collins Jr. (Jockey).

Plot details are under wraps, though the project has been discussed as a Western. Aster will direct from his own script and produce alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Darius Khondji, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer behind Bardo and Uncut Gems, is also aboard the project for his first collaboration with Aster. Production on the film kicks off this week.

Resurrections was a disaster but I like Goddard and I think there’s plenty of potential in the Matrix universe, so I’m cautiously optimistic about this…Let’s just add the Wachowskis to the list of writers/directors that should be kept away from their creations.

I really liked the first half of Resurrections, and in the context of what we know about Lana’s intentions for the movie (both business-wise and in terms of reflecting her own personal life) I get why the second half turned out like it did. For me it’s an interesting failure rather than a complete disaster.

Honestly, personally I don’t have much interest in a Matrix movie by somebody else – turning the whole thing into yet another legacy-sequel-franchise just isn’t the way I’d like it to go, although I can’t deny I’ll still be intrigued by where they take it.

Yeah, I’m a bit ambivalent there myself. But it’s an interesting world to explore with new characters if that’s where they want to go, and I do like Goddard a lot. If it’s true that this was his pitch and he has got something he really wants to do in the Matrix, then I’m all for it.

Quentin Tarantino No Longer Making ‘The Movie Critic’ as Final Film – Hollywood Reporter

Quento Tarantino is going back to the drawing board for his 10th and final film. The auteur had been preparing to start shooting The Movie Critic this year, but is backing away from the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Tarantino had been honing The Movie Critic for months. Set in 1977 California, it initially drew inspiration from a cynical movie critic that the filmmaker grew up reading. But sources say it morphed along the way into a film that would feature Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth, the stuntman he portrayed in an Oscar-winning performance in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It is unclear if this film was going to be a prequel or a 1970s-set sequel to Hollywood. But in recent weeks, Tarantino had a change of heart again and moved away from the film entirely.

The project was going to shoot for one day in August to qualify for a $20.5 million California Tax Credit, before it began production in earnest in early 2025. That is now no longer on the table.

No studio was attached to The Movie Critic, which becomes the latest project to fall by the wayside for Tarantino. He previously worked on an R-rated Star Trek movie for Paramount that did not come to fruition. There was speculation that Sony, which released Hollywood, would be a natural home for Tarantino’s latest.

THR first broke the news of the feature more than a year ago in March, and it has been the subject of much speculation, given Tarantino’s pledge to retire from directing after making one final project, his 10th. (He has made nine films, if you count the two-part Kill Bill movies as one feature.)
