Looking forward to this. Four Lions seems like a long time ago now.

This clip purport to tell why the first Clerks was in black and white. They tell a little bit and say because of cost but don’t elaborate. Before digital was so cheap and easy, you had to worry a lot more about color temperature of lighting and matching that to the film (indoor or outdoor). Going B&W means you only have to worry about having enough light and film which is more difficult that it seems.

    Great article on Bong Joon-ho:

My friend was raving about Parasite the other day. He said it’s best to go in cold. I’m gonna try seeing it Thursday, looking forward to it a lot. Memories of Murder and Mother are some of the movies I always recommend.

Looks fun. Love the animation style.

  • #1285

Ha! I thought the exact same thing.

Holy crap that Klaus animation and artwork style looks pretty amazing. I’m sure Grant Morrison won’t mind for calling that title (or will he?)

Len Wiseman Set To Direct Female-Centric ‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘Ballerina’

Lionsgate has set Len Wiseman to direct Ballerina, an action spinoff of the lucrative John Wick franchise. Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.

Ugh. I love the John Wicks, but I have zero faith in Wiseman.

I remember watching Underworld when I was 16. I should have been totally in the tank for that movie, and it was the most bored I’d ever been at the cinema. Total Recall was a complete dud too.

  • #1490

Hopefully there’s more to it, that’s the most banal pitch I’ve ever read.

  • #1554

I think this trailer is for a new film. IMDB says 2018, but it was only released in its native Japan this May. I assume it’s getting a wide English release.

    Very much NSFW.

I’ve seen a few people laud the animation style as daring and original, but it feels very reminiscent of 70s-90s British kids cartoons to me.

He-Man Movie May Go to Netflix

Sony may sell its in development He-Man reboot movie directly to Netflix rather than risk a box office flop, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Citing an unnamed source, THR reports that Sony Pictures Tom Rothman is weighing the possibility of selling the film, based on Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toyline, to Netflix for a flat, no risk payday rather than distributing the film to theaters where Sony worries it could fail to turn a sizable profit.

However, as THR points out, this strategy runs the opposite risk where the film could be a money-earner on Netflix, leaving Sony with only the flat purchase price in terms of profit.

  • #1656

Netflix doesn’t know the meaning of the word “profit”.

  • #1663

Also, jesus just do a good movie and don’t worry so much… is it so hard? =/

Well I guess it must be since they’re already anticipating a failure…

  • #1716

And they’re not the only ones.

Think of all the bad films you ever saw? Everyone on those was trying to make a good film. I’m sure Sony tried to make a good film with ‘Men In Black: International’ for example.

    So yes, it’s hard.

It’s also expensive. They’ll be in the hole for over $200m by the time they’ve made, and released, a ‘He-Man’ movie.

Or they can get Netflix to pay them the costs plus some extra and walk away with a small, but real profit, and potentially sequels that do the same thing.

Personally, I wouldn’t put a dime into a He-Man movie, but a TV show? Quite possibly.

  • #2307

    Probably those too.

I know someone who has pitched a new version of ‘The Haunted Mansion’. Disney hasn’t taken them up on their version, but they wont be the only ones pitching.

  • #2308

The last Haunted Mansion was the Eddie Murphy one, right?

They’re looking for a new franchise, clearly, but it would take a tremendous vision to make any one of those into a Pirates like success.

  • #2314

It was. It did ok, but it wasn’t a blockbuster and didn’t become a franchise.
    .
Guillermo del Toro was announced as involved with a new version a while back, but it was one of the many projects he developed that never became an actual film.
    .
‘Pirates’ was lightning in a bottle but you can see the appeal of trying again; they already have all these theme park rides built. The synergy is up and running.
    .
The Haunted Mansion is potentially quite dark of course and a family friendly horror movie is a tricky thing to get right.

  • #2474

But after the amazing money ‘Jumanji’ made I clearly have to admit that I know nothing about the appeal of The Rock in silly, family adventure movies.

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” said Kaluuya. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

  • #3057

    What is Barneys back story?

  • #3090

In the best superhero tradition, Barney has a tragic backstory in which a guy puts on a big purple dinosaur costume and attempts to molest children.

  • #3310

Having read some of the recent Valiant series, this trailer seems to give away a lot of the plot.

  • #3312

Ok. Really it looks like a collage of scifi/superhero ideas mashed up. I’ve never read the comic so I can’t compare it.

It’s also carefully calculated to bring in the previously untapped Purple audience. It’s honestly a marketing dream.

  • #3318

  • #3369

Having read some of the recent Valiant series, this trailer seems to give away a lot of the plot.

It is a Vin Diesel Action flick, what kind of plot are you expecting? This is going to be a revenge movie and they did not show him going after Killian from Iron Man 3 so the trailer does not show too much in their opinion.

looks good for a bargain movie

  • #3374

    What is Barneys back story?

  • #3378

Having read some of the recent Valiant series, this trailer seems to give away a lot of the plot.

The reveal shown in the trailer is a pretty cool concept though, and without showing it, it’d be even harder to sell what makes this different from a hundred precursors.

  • #3411

Bloodshot looks suprisingly good. I did think it might have given away too much at first. But actually it is a good twist, and it would be hard to promote the filmed without giving it away. I’m sure they don’t want to go the Blade Runner 2049 route of not felling the audience what the films actually about.

James Cameron has gone back on his plans to shoot the Avatar sequels in HFR:

    https://collider.com/avatar-sequels-no-hfr-james-cameron/

“I’ve seen some clips from Gemini Man. I haven’t seen the picture yet because I’m down here in New Zealand. I’m interested to see it. I mean, I have a personal philosophy around high frame rate, which is that it is a specific solution to specific problems having to do with 3D. And when you get the strobing and the jutter of certain shots that pan or certain lateral movement across frame, it’s distracting in 3D. And to me, it’s just a solution for those shots. I don’t think it’s a format. That’s just me personally. I know Ang doesn’t see it that way. I don’t think it’s like the next 70 millimeter or the next big thing. I think it’s a tool to be used to solve problems in 3D projection. And I’ll be using it sparingly throughout the Avatar films, but they won’t be in high frame rate. But I am curious to see what they came up with. Have you guys seen it? And you saw a high frame rate screening?

Yes. Actually, underwater stuff in particular really stood out.

Well, this is the thing. To me, the more mundane the subject, two people talking in the kitchen, the worse it works, because you feel like you’re in a set of a kitchen with actors in makeup. That’s how real it is, you know? But I think when you’ve got extraordinary subjects that are being shot for real, or even through CG, that hyper-reality actually works in your favor. So to me, it’s a wand that you wave in certain moments and use when you need it. It’s an authoring tool.”

Depressing look at how Disney’s treating the old Fox titles it acquired:

    https://www.vulture.com/2019/10/disney-is-quietly-placing-classic-fox-movies-into-its-vault.html

In the preceding few months, Neff had heard rumblings in his Google group of film programmers that Disney was about to start treating older Fox titles as they do older Disney titles — making them mostly unavailable to for-profit theaters. More and more film programmers and theater managers were reporting that they had suddenly and cryptically been told by their studio contacts that Fox’s back catalogue was no longer available to show. Some got calls informing them that an existing booking had been revoked.
    […]
But why, exactly, is Disney doing this?
    […]
[A] convincing theory is that this is just how Disney does business. We’re now 11 years into the imperial phase of Disney’s expansion, which saw the company buy Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm (owners of Star Wars and Indiana Jones) and become the dominant player in theatrical exhibition. Last year, Disney claimed 40 percent of North American ticket sales (a number expected to jump to 50 percent once the Fox merger begins to deliver). It is able to demand and receive percentages of ticket sales far beyond those of its rivals, plus entire screens dedicated not just to near-surefire hits from Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Disney’s animation department, but iffier prospects like the live-action remakes of Pete’s Dragon and Dumbo, A Wrinkle in Time, and nature documentaries like Monkey Kingdom.

More than one exhibition professional contacted for this article speculated that Disney’s overall goal is to claim as many screens at a theater as possible for its newer titles, even if some of them are packing the house but others are selling just a handful of tickets per show. A former theater manager for a major chain, who asked not to be identified in this piece, says, “It seems short-sighted, you know? But they do it, I think, just to keep a Sony title out, to keep a Universal title out.” The Fox freeze out, he speculates, may be an extension of that tactic: Disney considers any screen that’s taken up by an older movie, even one that’s owned by Disney, to be a screen that could be showing the new Marvel or Star Wars title instead. Or showing Orangutans 4 to an audience of three.

    • This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by Will_C.
  • #3970

If the article is correct then it’s a bunch of people in Disney offices who have been trained to treat Disney IP in a particular way and, to my mind, it’s faulty in it’s logic. Maintaining a fanbase for classic movies benefits all studios. Disney clearly trades on nostalgia as much as (and arguable more than) any studio, and it should be promoting it, rather than restricting it.
    .
So this can be fixed, with some public pressure. That article links to one in the LA Times. We’ll see if anyone else picks it up?
    .
    https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2019-08-09/will-disney-let-theaters-screen-old-fox-movies
    .

    • This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by SteveUK.
  • #3975

I think that I might hate them.

  • #3990

Is it possible that Disney is going to start treating Fox films like some of their own old films and putting the in “The Vault” for a bit to give them special releases from time to time?

  • #4003

Maybe. I think it’s far more likely that the Fox archive was transferred to the control Disney employees who then carried on as usual. No-one thought to look at whether a different policy made more sense?

  • #4013

More than one exhibition professional contacted for this article speculated that Disney’s overall goal is to claim as many screens at a theater as possible for its newer titles, even if some of them are packing the house but others are selling just a handful of tickets per show. A former theater manager for a major chain, who asked not to be identified in this piece, says, “It seems short-sighted, you know? Or showing Orangutans 4 to an audience of three.

That sounds like a terrible deal for theater-owners, where they are forced to play Disney films to an empty or near-empty theater, when they could be packing it with a Universal or Sony movie that people might actually might want to see.
    .
Seems like the kind of strategy that could drive theaters to close their doors.

  • #4016

It’s a terrible idea and it could close theatres.
    .
There’s always been a push and pull between cinemas and studios. They need each other but they fight over the details, sometimes quite strongly.
    .
It’s why the studios used to own the majority theatres in the USA, until that monopoly was broken up by the government in the 50’s.
    .
Occasionally a cinema chain will get pushed too far and refuse to carry a film, which is their ultimate sanction, but generally they find something that both sides can accept.
    .
What’s needed here is for the film business establishment to campaign against limiting screenings by Disney. It needs the BFI, AFI, Motion Picture Academny, BAFTA etc. to be publically against the change.
    .
Maybe Scorsese and Coppola can complain about this too? They’re clearly not Disney fans anyway. ;)

    • This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by SteveUK.
  • #4027

This is why these kind of huge mergers should not be passed. If Disney controls over half the content as suggested then they are in a position to demand what they want. What the cinema manager in that snippet is saying about keeping a Sony movie out is technically illegal (but of course his opinion and not proven fact as it stands).

  • #4029

I have no snarky comment to add.

(Except that this is clearly some clever marketing plan because Disney own the Hollywood press.)

It is usual for English Law jurisdictions to have laws against monopolising and cartel-conduct, such as this. Gar is no doubt correct.

So, if true this is exactly the type of megacorp behaviour we should as a society rally against, and there should be a legal process to do just this.

  • #4045

Well, since Jim ain’t here right now, I’ll go ahead and say it… Disney’s the fuckin devil. What else were people expecting? u_u

  • #4048

The major shareholder is Bob Iger with around 1 million shares and he controls the company at a fundamental level.

If you don’t like Disney, don’t like what they’re doing, don’t engage with their products. That goes for all megacorps.

    Bob Iger’s email is robert.a.iger@disney.com.

  • #4056

If you don’t like Disney, don’t like what they’re doing, don’t engage with their products. That goes for all megacorps.

You mean like the Marvel films and comics?

  • #4059

I do. Star Wars too. Fox. ABC. Don’t subscribe to Disney+.

    Take a stand.

This is a space i work in and there are probably 100 megacorps that we consume everyday, and theyre all awful and there are government initiatives working very hard to ensure that, distilled down to a very basic principle, one day we dont live in a world run by corporations as opposed to democracies. But the corporate world is complicated and if you feel particularly strongly about a Corporation like Disney, as some people here seem to, or Apple, or Monsanto, Saudi Aramco, or Redstone Media Group, or Walmart then cut it out of your lives and you will probably feel enriched for it.

Otherwise don’t. Continue to consume the products you feel are valuable. If you want to support initiatives that try to prevent monopolisation and promote good governance then you should do that, but know that applies wholesale.

I don’t particularly have any comment to the people that hate something very publicly, but enjoy it privately other than there’s an inherent conflict there.

My, perhaps, veiled point is that monopolisation and cartel-conduct is illegal. I believe in the Rule of Law and have seen it in action preventing these things. It is imperfect but, not disastrously so.

For the record, i dont have any problem with Disney’s content. I enjoy the Marvel movies, comics, and so on and so forth. If i were to stop consuming their content based on some kind of contrived (or perhaps detailed) moral justification, it’s difficult for me to see why i wouldn’t just stop consuming most other content too – like from Warner Bros and Sony etc, because i can’t imagine any moral justification which damns Disney, not also applying to the other companies. The fundamental reasoning appears to be that because of of Disney’s prominent market share they’re the “worst” and “monopolising” and i just dont agree with that at all. But i do think Corporations are underhanded on a daily basis and Disney is a good example of this.

  • #4088

most of the previous discussion appears to be movie business news than trailers and upcoming movies. Any chance it can be moved to Box office mojo?

  • #4089

I mean, I “consume” some of their products, but I don’t pay for them… does that count? =P

Although, to be fair I have paid for cinema tickets these past years I suppose, although I’m not particularly planning on going to the theaters anymore for MCU movies, so that shouldn’t be an issue going forward… but I’ve tried my best to not buy anything Disney for most of my life… even if at this point it’s practically impossible not to… =/

I mean, I “consume” some of their products, but I don’t pay for them… does that count?

    It will at the trial.

There’s an argument, that im inclined to agree with, that says it does because the consumption of pirated content is still proliferation. The more something is seen, the more it will be seen (whether or not a portion of that is paid for). If you look at the major pirating cases in the last 10 years they’re not being waged in favour of blockbusters, which usually have the highest chunk of the pirating audience, they’re being waged in favour of films like Dallas Buyers Club. Considering Disney send a cease and desist letter everytime someone’s fart sounds similar to their jingle they’ve been noticeably absent on policing that space. As is the case for the producers of all blockbuster films. Theye’ve made it part of their market and their marketing.

The larger moral argument, which can’t be answered by anyone but the individual personally, is whether it matters to you. If you hate the company but still watch their content, whether at a friends house or through rarbg.com, then you don’t hate the company enough to remove it from your life altogether.

I agree this should be moved to Box office mojo.

‘Chernobyl’ Creator Craig Mazin Tackling ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot
    .
Veteran ‘Pirates’ scribe Ted Elliott was also hired to develop a new story for the franchise.
    .
Pirates of the Caribbean may set sail once again. Disney has hired veteran Pirates scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to develop a story for a new Pirates adventure feature.
    .
    –SNIP–
    .
The studio had taken steps toward developing a reboot in late 2018 when it hired Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to write a script that was designed to “give it a kick in the pants,” according to Disney. But Reese and Wernick ended up exiting the project in early 2019, leaving it in dry dock since.
    .
The hiring of Elliott and Mazin puts Pirates in the early stages of development, with the duo tasked to find a direction and story. Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to once again be at the helm as producer.
    .
Elliott knows well his way around the Seven Seas, having written on the 2003 original, The Curse of the Black Pearl, and subsequent three installments (Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides) with then partner Terry Rossio.
    .
Mazin had established himself in the comedy world with installments of Scary Movie and The Hangover movies, but it was with this year’s Emmy-winning and buzzy HBO miniseries, Chernobyl that he found acclaim for his dramatic voice.

I’ve been hearing (and reading) amazing reviews of PARASITE that basically describe it as “Whatever you think it is, you’re wrong”. Now THAT’s a film I want to see!!

That’s mainly because the trailers completely misrepresent what kind of movie it is. It’s a very funny black comedy with a lot of social commentary. Not sure why the trailers want you to think it’s a thriller.

  • #4137

It’s definitely a thriller. It’s a dark comedy and a social satire and a thriller.

Agreed we should move this discussion elsewhere, ’cause it’s interesting but very OT. but for now: Yes of course, Disney’s more interested in selling merch rather than movie tickets… their movies, particularly all the SH, SW & that sort of thing, are just merch ads. Plus I’m sure studios have figured out by now that it can’t be stopped, even though they still go after leakers from time to time.

Well I mean, it’s not really my fault that Marvel sold out to the mouse. I did struggle with it at first because I really didn’t want to support Disney, but Marvel CBs have been a huge thing in my life… my personal compromise was that… not the best or most “moral/legal” but eh…

Very “Operating Thetan”? Oh, duh, very “Oregon Trail”

As always, it’s just Jon making everything about the Oregon Trail B-) AGAIN

MAYBE we should just start a separate Oregon Trail thread and keep the discussion on topic about trailers and things, what do you think?

I’m sure that stuff like Endgame making almost $3bn on its own helps.

I like the director’s other movies, but this being filmed in summer 2018, going for reshoots a year later, and coming out in January make me think this one’s probably a miss.

Oh I’m sure it does, profit is profit… but I can guarantee you they’re happier about what that number means, rather than the number itself.

Why is this just called The Grudge? It’s not a remake of the original movie (or a remake of the remake of the original movie), so… it’s a re-start that riffs on the original’s motifs, but it uses just the original title?

I think this is all very confusing.

I guess you’ve never heard of Halloween.
