I got this message from one of his friends:

Hello,
I hope this finds you doing well.
I’m really sorry to add and share some super crap news; we’ve lost another friend in 2020.
Michael Loveland was an amazing Human and man that strived every day, to better the injustices that our society holds over so many of us.
Michael passed on Sunday, November 8th, 2020 in Longmont, Co.
I am currently looking into several actions to serve & remember him and hope that it’s something his community is supportive of.
I know he appreciated & cared for each and every one of us that he spoke with.
I am so very sorry for loss and feelings of grief.

I miss him already.

    Oh no.

What the FUCK do you say to this? FUCK!

Miqque was a fantastic guy. He was one of the people who got me out of drug abuse (YEAH, OK, I KNOW I STILL DO DRUGS, THANKS). You all were, but I remember (and took) advice from Gar and Todd and especially Miqque the most.

I last spoke to him sometime in October. We were just joking around. Fuck.

I miss him too. I’ve missed him for a while but this is fucking FUCK!

I’m sorry if this post is all over the place but I think it’s understandable.

I hope he’s lecturing [preferred deity] on things as we type along.

    Miqque “Michael” Loveland <3

I asked the friend of his, Jessy Phares, who let me know what the cause of death was. This was her response:

He went in on the 17th with abdominal pain, found to have a tear in his bowel. Several surgeries (lack of healing, die-off) needed, as the first didn’t go the best; he came out of it on a lung machine, then his kidneys shut down, so he was on dialysis for a time. He just never had the chance to recover, though they did try to bring him out several times. 😞 Ultimately, I believe cause of death is listed as Sepsis.

I’m just devastated by this news. Miqque was like the Statue of Liberty; a landmark and symbol that would always be in our line of sight and our consciousness. So sad to hear the details of his death too; he deserved to go out on a flaming motorcycle with a joint in one hand, a bottle of tequila in the other, and a rocket launcher strapped between his shoulder blades.

Rest In Peace, Michael Loveland from Colorado, California, and Jupiter. I’ll miss you more than I realized.

Post as much as you want Anders if it helps you.

Such sad news, Miqque didn’t have life too easy there at the end with a lot of health, housing and money worries but he still remained upbeat and just a little bit crazy through it all. I’ll still remember the generosity of the board when Jim arranged that fund raiser to buy him all the DC New 52 number 1 issues back in 2011. We’ll never forget his long rambling posts with his askiew view of life, the universe and everything.

    Rest in peace Mr Loveland.

Thank you to those who let me know of Miqque’s passing. Goodbye my friend, you’ll be sorely missed and always remembered.

Life dealt Miqque a hell of a shit sandwich, and yet despite everything he coped with a love of life. You always saw the kindness of his spirit and the rascal in his soul when he posted here. I know this place was an oasis for him, and he valued the friendships he built up here over the years. I’m glad to have been a part of it and to have met him here. I think all of us have a Miqque story, and no doubt if we were in the bar they’d be locking up while we remembered some shit he said or got up to over the years. Old posters or new, everyone got to know Miqque and he was always kind and welcoming to everyone. He took the time with you if you gave any time to him (and even if you didn’t give him much time!).

Those 20,000 word ramblings that only the brave tackled were one of his signature behaviors, but for me it was the twinkle in his posts where you were never sure if he was kidding or not. Sometimes I didn’t know if Miqque was smoking the weed or if the weed was smoking Miqque.

I’d always hoped that one day I’d be traveling close enough to him to meet. I’m terribly sorry that it’ll never happen now, but I’m glad I got to know him well enough to consider him friend. He was a good, kind, fun loving, self effacing, entertaining and gentle soul. He was decent, even with everything he endured. I wish life had given him more. He deserved it.

2020 is just the worst fucking year and this now is the worst part of it. I know Miqque had strong faith and I hope he was right in that regard, that’s there’s more to life that what we see. Whether there is or isn’t he lives on in our memories and every time we smile thinking about him.

Rest In Peace Treebeard. I’ll never forget you.

    Hello,
My name is Jessy; I really wish I were here for other reasons at an earlier time. I’m another one of Miqque’s online family members through another platform, though very much through a community as well.
It seems to be how us hermits roll.
I’ll be stepping in as proxy for Miqque to be sure that he is cared for and respected afterlife and would really like to honor and pay tribute to him as best as possible. That means that I could use your help too, I’m sure. We were ALL his family.
If I can answer any questions or even just be there, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I know he didn’t waste his time on people, so I’m certain I’m in good hands here for as much as he considered you all family.
I truly wish I could comfort each of you that is feeling this loss; please remember there’s no wrong way to grieve. Please, feel your feelings. He would want it. It’s how we become healthier and I know *that* was one of his ultimate needs in being the amazing Human that he was; Humanity’s mental health to be restored.

    In Solidarity, with love,
    Jessy

I’m also very happy you’re picking up for Miqque, and that you let us know through Todd. Again, thank you.

If there’s anything else we can do for you, you’ll let us know, ok?  We’re, as you might have figured already, a mad bunch. Not as mad as a ferret sausage Miqque, but tbf… no-one is.

I need to collect composure before writing any Miqque-stories, but it’s coming. For now… I’m just glad you’re here.

(That’s odd: I’m having trouble getting this post to stay up, i apologize if I generated duplicate posts elsewhere).  I was just about to leave Facebook and get back to some coursework when I caught Todd Gross’ post. He wrote, “For those who hung out at the [DC/Wildstorm Authority Boards], the Millarworld boards, and its successor, The Carrier, our dear friend Michael Loveland AKA Miqque, has passed away. … He was wonderfully unique and will be missed.”

I’ll say.  Michael “Miqque” Loveland barely knew me. I was just a a disembodied voice (or rather, lines of text) on a comic book message board. He went out of his way to visit me when he was in California, and I was still recovering from the back surgery (during which time I discovered message boards, and online comic book / film fandom, and dove into the ongoing debates and discussions on those boards). Michael was a wonderful voice, always warm and forthcoming. The man shall indeed be missed.

“God Bless You, Miqque!”  I wish I had a photo of us together to share with everyone.

It’s hard to accept this as a reality; I felt like Mique was unkillable. He had survived so much, and kept up good spirits in spite of terribly harrowing circumstances and constant pain. He was always kind and concerned with others and he was an inspiration to talk to, with a unique point of view.

So sad to hear the details of his death too; he deserved to go out on a flaming motorcycle with a joint in one hand, a bottle of tequila in the other, and a rocket launcher strapped between his shoulder blades.

That made me smile so much. This is how I will henceforth see him going.
The pains are over now, Mique. Rest in peace.

Miqque was a true classic. Like most of us, I never got to meet him in person, but I always valued his encouragement and conversation, even when it came in very large chunks. My lasting impression of him is from Facebook. He obviously loved watching my kids grow up, kind of like an Internet uncle they never knew. Always great words of encouragement any time my wife or I posted photos of them growing and exploring. at one point early on, probably due to his boisterousness and familiarity, Mel asked me, “Who is this Michael Loveland guy?” I told her he was a great, weird guy I knew from here. His comments always made her smile after that. Such a loss to so many people, and I find myself thinking I’ll just miss knowing he’s there, up for a chat any time he had a connection. Truly one of the pillars of our community here. Cheers, Miqque. You were loved, and you are missed.

I just saw Todd’s post over on Facebook.

I’ve drifted from this community since the change to the carrier but have tried my best to maintain connections i’ve made here in other ways. Miqque was probably one of the first of you I added as a Facebook friend.

I had been worried for Miqque as his online presence dwindled, he would always comment on pictures I shared of my boys etc, and out feelers out here recently because of that.

I am both shocked and saddened to hear of Miqques passing and feel even worse seeing the details of his death.

I too will be remembering as he was described above.

I just hope that he is now reunited with Gunny, as Inknow how hard he took that loss.

He was a stalwart here, and always had something interesting to contribute to every conversation. More than that he was an amazing source of good advice, always able to see the best possible course of action in most situations. This advice was often invaluable and I know for some here it was both life-saving and life-changing.

The world has lost an amazing individual and I have to say it is a real gut-punch addition to a fucking shitty year.

Very sad to hear that Miqque has passed away. I should’ve known something was up when he stopped commenting on my FB posts. Even after being away from MW for a long time, he often reached out to me and always had something positive to offer. I’m going to miss his attempts to get me to open up to him. He was a great guy. R.I.P. Miqque.

    Big hugs, everyone.

I had a hard cry over this on the couch earlier today; Miqque was a solid, great, clever, caring guy.

I always imagined one day undertaking a MillarWorld pub-crawl world-tour and meeting up with a bunch of folks in person for the first time, including catching some stories directly from Miqque, undoubtedly on *any* subject that’d come to mind.

He was always ready and willing to offer meaningful advice and support and encouragement on anything to everyone – a real carer.

This is my off-the-boards experience of him too. Nothing but kind words whenever I posted anything about the child on Facebook. I’m now regretting the fact we haven’t posted about our upcoming second child on Facebook as I know he’d have gotten a kick out of that news.

I heard about Miqque’s passing through the grapevine today, having drifted away from this site a while back.

He was one of the nicer people online, certainly less into the online arguments than many of us, more just hanging out and chatting, often at great length. :-)

And I’m sure we’re having a little carpe diem moment, which is what we should all do more often really.

I’m not a great believer in an afterlife, but if there is one, I hope it has great coffee, movies and weed.

Miqque was certainly one of the driving forces behind this little community. I think he loved to help people. He certainly helped me at some of those times when I had a crisis. He was also kind of an inspiration. He had troubles of his own to deal with, and I admired him for making it through those in the way he did, it gave me hope that I could manage whatever I had to deal with. I hope he is up there in heaven, reunited with the folks he had seen leave this mortal plane, and his cats.

I haven’t been here almost since the Carrier started, and it’s my own fault for that, but hearing this news has brought me back, for right now at least.

Miqque was one of the purest selfs I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. There’s no human on Earth like him, and it’s even doubtful there’s any humanoid off-Earth like him. I had the pleasure of conversing with him from time to time on Facebook as many of you did, and the energy he had on this board was just who he really was. He seemed to deeply value his connections with so many of us and many others as well. How he had the boundless energy and enthusiasm for keeping track of the lives of people he had never met in physical reality one can only speculate, but it’s nothing if not impressive.

I had a close call with being able to meet him many years ago when my now-wife and I did a road trip across the USA; I had tried to get ahold of him at the time but he was going through some of his horribly unfair life struggles at the time, and it wasn’t a possibility. I always regretted not being able to figure out how to make it happen somehow anyway, now even exponentially so. I have the tendency to reflect often, probably too often, on mistakes I’ve made and things I wish I could’ve done or would’ve done differently, and this is going to be high on the list for as long as I live.  For what it’s worth DJ, Gar, I think of you guys fairly often too, and I’m sorry for being a jerk.

I often thought of Miqque as being like our own personal Hunter S. Thompson. I was never quite sure how true his stories were, but I always wanted to believe them anyway. I’m pretty confident at least that there is and was truth to them, anyway, and that he led the kind of life most people only dream of, with fervor, skill, curiosity, and drive. As many of you have already noted, he never let life keep him down, and I really admired that about him.

I don’t have that many sources of positivity in life, and 2020 has of course made them even scarcer. He wasn’t just a light in the darkness, he was a goddamned blazing star. Shine on you crazy diamond, you’ll never be forgotten for as long as any of us still have a spark left to our own lives.

  • #44133

I’m sorry for being a jerk.

Life is life. I’ve never thought of you as a jerk, quite the opposite.

I was never quite sure how true his stories were, but I always wanted to believe them anyway.

I’m simply humbled by the posts here; reminded of communities in the past – so very thankful that Miqque had that here and you all had him. <3
I’ve been trying to brainstorm some, thinking of losing friends online in the past and wanted to share an idea/thought. Part of my past, was creating memorial pages for people, my online community members really (chatting since 1992) that had passed on, with guestbooks, etc for people to leave their memories & such on, along with photos, art, music, etc that might be created.
Seems to me there might be a plethora of talent around, if there would be an interest to do a similar thing here for Miqque? I’m certainly far too rusty (and executive dysfunctionaly mucked up) to help much but would gladly like to see how I can try if there might be a value to others?
Similar lines, what might be a collective thought of some ‘fandom’ art in honor of Miqque – I vision him on that rocket, also with the Infinity Gauntlet as well – should we commission a piece to commemorate that? I don’t have a need or want to ‘hold’ a piece myself like that but I’m all but certain that Miqque would get a kick out of it and would insist the artist be compensated.
I do believe I’ll be ordering a tree to be planted in the Longmont Co area; if there is input people would like to assist with there, I’d happily share details (I believe the tree type, park location are choice options) – as well as wanting to get a collective input on the plaque that will go with his tree. There will be a total of 3 lines, with 25 characters per line available.
What are some other impactful things you can think of to help honor him? Thanks for helping me brainstorm some of these things. I’ve truly no desire to do this alone; though I know I can if needed (cos I understand *that* too).
I’ll close this for now – Thanks again guys.

    art in honor of Miqque

This idea hits me on all levels and I love it. I’m not sure what the community thinks about this, but I’m all for it.

An old-fashioned MW art jam in Miqque’s honour could be a nice way to pay tribute.

I found out about Miqque earlier and its just devastating news.

He was the pillar of community and a bright, unique spark that was always a joy to be adjacent to.

He never judged, never criticised, put down or joked at someone else’s expense, barked, pulled rank, or tried to shut anyone down.

The guy was just genuinely loving and I think for him he was just so happy and energised to be part of an interesting world, which is a quality that in people so fleeting these days.

The way he spoke about the actors in tv shows, and writers of comic books – they were his friends, and he loved them as real people, not just content producers.

I don’t think there has ever been anyone like Miqque and I think our lives are enriched for having known him, and loved him.

Hello, friends.  It’s been a while.  Thank you to Jessy, Todd, Dave and others for sending the messages that let me know of Miqque’s passing.  I read the news in my kitchen as we were cleaning up from dinner on Friday night and just wept.  It’s hard to believe I won’t chat with him again on this side of eternity.

Miqque just seemed invincible.   No matter how much physical health and circumstances beat him down and crippled him, it just couldn’t seem to beat him.  Cancer, back problems, homelessness… that shit didn’t stand a chance against Miqque.  He fucked it up with a smile, kept on rolling and taking care of others with his words.  Whenever I see a long, rambling, multiple paragraph post somewhere, I can’t help but think of Miqque and the jokes about how he must have broke into his stash.  I can’t help but feel, like a true Jedi, Miqque didn’t die but just became stronger.  I hope his digital Force Ghost inhabits all the online communities he loved.

One thing Miqque and I did share was faith in Christ.  He and I chatted several times about our struggles with our faith and how we knew the true expression of it was not to beat others down but to lift them up and help them no matter who they were or what their circumstance.  So while I know that there will be a Miqque shaped hole in mine and others lives, it does comfort me to know that he is now at rest with no more of the pain or suffering that this world seemed to liberally dole out to him.

Lots of love to you all, my brothers and sisters.  May we all carry pieces of Miqque in our hearts and minds.

they were his friends, and he loved them as real people, not just content producers.

I spoke to him on the phone a few times and it was pronounced like “Mikey”.

I hope he’s lecturing [preferred deity] on things as we type along.

I believe cause of death is listed as Sepsis.

Rest In Peace Treebeard. I’ll never forget you.

I agree about the pub name change. A fitting tribute.

I read the first post at about 10 am, it is now 12pm. Like many, I have no words to say so I quoted many of you. and have things to say about them.

in some of these cases, those creators were his friends, check the crowdfunding links and you will see them.

As someone who did have the honor of meeting Miqque in person    He liked “mikey” but I believe he would not mind how you pronounced it. I think he used it as a conversation starter.

My views on his current situation are that I believe he is running Heaven’s Psych ward
My Dad died in much the same way(sepsis). it is a horrible way to go
Nice to hear from you Jim I think he loved Treebeard.

WonK, I remember when talking to Miqque about the board, he often brought up your name in that he liked connecting with you. Thanks for posting.

I’m lucky I work where I do. I started to bawl my eyes out when I saw this. Kind souls took me over to the morale center here and sat with me as I dealt with this loss.

Jessy, Welcome. I think the tree planting sounds like a great idea. My idea of the plaque should say Miqque Loveland Treebeard 9/11/54-11/8/2020. I would love to be there for the planting. my contact info is 303 928 9656 don.lerch@gmail.com. I no longer live in Colorado but still have friends there so I could manage the trip out.

p.s. Todd, i do not know whether you still have an archive of photos posted here but i posted one back in 2009 of Miqque and I with beers in our hands. I know it is a big ask but I already looked on my end and it was many phones and carriers ago. Also, DO NOT FEEL BAD if you can’t.

What might be the thoughts on this tree option? I’m linking the map location, so the areas can be seen, but I was thinking of doing perhaps 3 “groves” of trees, in different areas? The main differing of this, would be that there would not be a plaque to be seen or ‘left’ there, and I of course, assume, that though there’s no ‘current’ plans for tree removal, there will likely be in the future.

We also have an opportunity to have a tree or bench created in Australia in his memory; making him Global, if there’s interest?

I also *really* like the idea of a memorial page for him and hope that someone runs with it. It would be lovely to see a place that holds stories, knowledge, art, music and all things Miqque. We could happily purchase a domain name & the space to host it, or a considerable chunk of time (I believe, if possible) if there’s an interest in creating by any creatives out here.

I’ll be asking the Director at ReefCares about a character name in honor of Miqque as well, so he’ll be ‘memorialized’ in trying to end human trafficking & raise awareness.

How can we gauge interest in a possible commission piece here in within this community best?

Thanks for your assist with these things. I appreciate.

Really liked the quote selection, a good few of those really felt bang on.

Feeling rather down tonight, yeah, I know it’s 2-3 days later, but stuff like this tends to take time to sink in – tonight? Oh, it has.  Missing Miqque?  Yeah, that’s it in two words.

What gets overlooked is just how easy it is to be open online, sometimes more easily than in real life.  I might post something here or do a review there, it get’s Miqque’s attention and he spins a couple of aspects of it into a 20,000 super post that, if you but had the nerve to follow it, would be hugely fun to read but also very much him, very much his personality, his sense of being – and that’s all gone now.

I’ve been asked a few questions and I knew the answers for some, but some, I’m either not *for certain* or I just don’t trust my memory 100%. If you happen to know, would you please share with me, so I can contact the Chapel, so they can get the correct information on his Death Certificate, instead of listing “unknown(s)”.
    Thank you!

Where was Miqque born (like, we know the stars & all the other stuff, but for legal Human here on Earth reasons?)
Did Miqque ever serve in the military?
Name of Miqque’s father or mother? I believe his mother was Betty – I don’t trust my memory for more though.

Sorry for asking such personal things on such a public forum. Thank you for understanding.

The only information I recall Miqque revealing about his family was mentioning that he was a descendant of William A.H. Loveland, a founder of the Colorado Central Railroad and Lieutenant Governor of the state, the man for whom the city of Loveland was named. I also recall Miqque referred to his forefather as a “robber baron”.

I did a free white pages search on him. His mom is Betty Allyn Loveland. He lived in a number of places in CA.

He used to talk about working on the Jeopardy game show and its freaky that he died on the same day as Alex Trebek.

Shattering news. I’m in bits. Such presence, and, indeed, a present to all who were blessed to know him – it’s difficult to think of Miqque in the past tense. Miqque was a dote, and I doted on him. He was uniquely Miqque. He actively listened. You could see it in his octagonal way of riffing off of others’ posts with his own stories. Offered advice only when asked for. Miqque-mental. Non-judgmental. He was all about community and communication. He had all the twinkle of a starbright mountain sky.

Rest easy, Miqque. The world’s a whole lot dimmer, now you no more are here; but we can all shine a wee bit brighter in your stead.

I’m raising a glass to you now with grá. (So fill to me the parting glass…)

I didn’t really interact that much with Miqque, but that’s my fault. Not going to beat myself up about it, but if I don’t interact then they won’t know that I do like them.
Sometimes his posts were a little long-winded, but looking back he had no fear. He had a point to make and was going to tell you, and I can learn from that.
Miqque’s door was always open, and he definitely was on the side of good.

One thing I wanted to share.
At my workplace (I’m a tradesman – steel fabricator) there is a certain humor to those in their ’50’s and ’60’s.
If they reference a war from recent history, then you say “was that World War 1 or World War 2?”
And when that is already tired you just up the ante.

I honestly forget how it started, but I responded to Miqque: “was that the Civil War?”
And then I kind of got a little worried and thought about deleting it.
He comes back with “That shit that went down in Sparta can’t be considered civil!
I honestly laughed out loud, and admit he outdid me (I got schooled).

I’m not saying it wouldn’t absolutely suck if bad things were to happen to anyone of you, but just reading that thread title that day my heart just dropped. Really, really hoped for any other reason for him not to be here.
He was a good soul. If there is a heaven, you know he’s there. You know.

Edit to add: Great renaming of the Forum, and honestly shows a touch of class.
    Good for you.

    Hello Loverlies,
I hope you’ve all had a safe week. I wanted to give you an update.
    So far;
Miqque’s ashes should be shipped to me in this coming week. I’ve authorized for part of them to be picked up locally, to be scattered in selected areas locally as well.
    An order form has been mostly filled out to be sent into the Forestry Dept in Longmont Co, though I’m not sure of the park the tree will be located at this time, I am to understand I’ll get a map of the park & location the tree & plaque will be set.  I still need to choose the wording! (3 lines, 25 char each). I’m leaning towards;
       Miqque Treebeard Loveland
       9.11.1954-11.8.2020
       Keep kind & excellent
I’ve secured a place for memories, tributes, art, stories, etc to be put up & shared in honor of Miqque. It’s paid for for the next 5 years.
I’d be happy to create subdomains, emails and possibly allow access to someone who may be interested in helping.
For now, there’s a simple page over at TreeBeardFam – I do have this forum directly linked as well. I hope that’s ok.
There are a few other things in the works too but they’re moving parts that I’m not ready to quite reveal yet.
If there’s more that you feel I should know, do or be aware of, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know.
For now, keep kind, to yourself & to others. Talk soon!

My brother, John, made this for us:

The short story behind it is that after he was done with a proper comission he announced on twitter he would do some free low-effort portraits. Naturally, I submitted an interest and supplied an image of Miqque. I think you know the one.

He informed me he forgot the glasses but no worries. I got it covered:

I’d like to point out this was a rather quick job, and while I am quite happy with what he did he e-mailed me photos of this work with the comment; “I don’t normally count this as a victory”.

If anyone’s interested in my brothers work, he’s on instagram @psykjunta and twitter @kubisktklot. I’m not after trying to plug him, just give him the proper credit. :)

Really sorry to hear about Miqque :(  I used to chat with him a lot during the early MillarWorld days but fell out of touch when my work / life balance got a bit out of control and I ran out of time / energy to visit the site or keep up with people any longer.  So sad to hear that he is no longer with us.

I learned of Miqque’s passing when I googled him, because I was wondering what he was up to, and landed on this thread. Terrible, terrible news! He used to give me a good-natured ribbing on MW when we talked about music. Miqque always had some choice words for me, whenever I went off on stuff he considered noise, while I made fun of his grampa tastes. We decided to start a band to settle this once and for all, which we never did, of course. It was good fun. I’m sad as I’m writing this. At the same time, the memories put a smile on my face. Miqque, you golden hearted mountain man, you giant among mere tall guys, you crazy old rocker – wherever you’ve gone, that place will never be lacking in Rock’n’Roll.
