    The was a Twitter watch-a-long last night. I was watching something else but The Hollywood Reporter helpfully summarised a lot of the information that got shared, these were the ones I found most interesting;

An early draft of Markus and McFeely’s Infinity War script had Thanos (Josh Brolin) attacking Xandar and retrieving the Power Stone from the Nova Corps’ vault. Nova, Richard Rider, would have then crash-landed to Earth instead of Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and proclaimed “Thanos is coming!

McFeely revealed that there were several other versions of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) rescue of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) from Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor). One version had Tony sending his nano-suit to Strange which would have resulted in an Iron-suited Doctor Strange, with the Eye of Agamotto at the center of his chest piece rather than the Arc Reactor. The screenwriters shared a picture from the unfinished scene online.

    ironstrange

Smart Hulk was originally going to debut at the end of Infinity War and Ruffalo shot a scene in which Banner argues with the Hulk, before compromising and emerging from the Hulkbuster armor as Smart Hulk.

An earlier draft of the script saw Iron Man and Thor traveling to Asgard to collect the reality and space stones. Tony would have worn an invisible stealth suit, which debuted in Iron Man No. 152 in 1981, and fought Heimdall (Idris Elba). McFeely noted that while the scene was cool, it was not emotional, which makes sense given that Tony has no emotional connection to Heimdall. Similarly, Nebula and War Machine (Don Cheadle) were originally going to arrive on Morag while it was underwater, and they would have fought a giant sea-monster. Again, cool, but lacked an emotional connection.

The screenwriters revealed that it was their intention to have Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) meet Red Skull on Vormir, but it never made sense story-wise for him to be there. There was also an original plan to have Nebula wield the Infinity Gauntlet as she does in the comics, but the screenwriters felt it took away from the weight of Tony inevitably putting it on and sacrificing himself.

According to Marcus, Steve Rogers was not worthy to lift Mjolnir in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) because he still had the secret of Tony’s parents on his conscious. With that resolved by the third act of Endgame, Captain America is worthy to wield its power.

Every week before filming on Infinity War and Endgame, the Russos would meet with Robert Downey Jr. so he could use that time to dig into Tony Stark’s character, work on improvisations, and play with line deliveries. The now famous line, “I love you 3000,” was something that Downey Jr.’s now eight-year old would say to him.

I’d say this kind of thing was kinda needed to fill in gaps in The Hulks character arc. As it is now, it’s… a bit empty.

  • #24130

Yeah, that’s the one where I think it’s a shame they didn’t do it.

  • #24153

I kind of think they made the right move – the end of infinity war is pretty hectic and I think the impact of what would ostensibly be the introduction of a new character would be lost when straight after ‘the snap’ happens

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #24276

Well, the way they did it meant the whole thing that was going on with the Hulk didn’t get a resolution in Infinity War and it was just… there, without meaning anything particular. And it felt like there really was no reason why we didn’t get to see the Hulk for that whole movie – as opposed to seeing Smart Hulk directly in action for the first time when we get to see him. (At least, if it was supposed to happen before the snap, during the battle. After the snape, I agree. No point.)

I think you would have to have it happen right at the battle of wakanda started,  before Thor and Groot come down, so the audience can spend some time with the character and then move on when the stakes get raised.

Also, though, Infinity War is meant to end with a feeling of hopelessness. Having a new fun character suddenly there sort of takes away from that.

Well, you know, they could have done the thing where the heroes are losing the battle but then Banner and the Hulk do their agreement and suddenly there’s fucking SMART HULK and he’s turning the tide of the battle because he’s so fucking awesome until Thanos kicks his ass and all hope is lost. And THEN Thor comes down from the heavens.

Smart Hulk can be a fun character later. For that sequence, the important thing is that the Hulk is finally joining the battle, and he’s the new, improved, smart Hulk and he kicks ass all the better for it.

I continue to wonder if Hulk will come back?

I know the Smart Hulk is going to continue to be part of the films, but that’s not Hulk.

The short-tempered, violent personality that fed off anger and destruction is gone right now. ‘Endgame’ presented it as a fusion, but it’s not.

It’s Banner’s personality in Hulk’s body, with some cosmetic changes.

So, there is the dramatic potential for Hulk to smash his way back out again, and be even angrier that he’s been usurped by Banner? If anyone at Marvel sees it that way?

  • #24328

Probably dependent on the Universal deal.  If they can wrangle a solo film then almost certainly, but my understanding is Universal has distribution rights to a Hulk solo film including some kind of stake in the marketing revenue.

Otherwise it’s probably just going to be a c or d plot across some movies for as long as Ruffalo is happy to be involved.  If he signed for a 9 picture deal like most of them he’s technically done 7 already, although 2 were uncredited (Iron Man 3 and Captain Marvel).  At the bear minimum I’d say we’d have 1 film left with him (on a 6 picture deal, not including uncredited appearances) and 4 at a maximum (on a 9 picture deal if the uncredited appearances don’t count).

EDIT: Bit of googling seems to indicate it was a six-picture deal and only the 4 avengers films and ragnarok have counted so far, so there’s only one left unless he’s re-upped.

  • #24381

Or, what I was kinda hoping to see… was for the snap to kill Hulk… but not Banner… that would’ve been fun… then he recreates the Hulk process and ends up refining it so he becomes a smart Hulk… that would’ve been pretty neat =P

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Mutants_(film)#Music

Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis were confirmed in December 2017 to be composing the score for the film, having worked with Boone on his previous films.[58] In May 2018, Marilyn Manson announced that his cover of the song “Cry Little Sister”—originally written for the film The Lost Boys (1987) by Gerard McMahon—which Manson debuted during his Heaven Upside Down tour, had been recorded specifically for the New Mutants soundtrack.[59][60] In February 2020, Mark Snow was revealed to have composed the score for the final version of the film, though additional music composed by Walcott and Mogis was still set to be used in the soundtrack.[61]

Why waste valuable cinema real estate with dicey attendance at best when you could just dump it on one of the streaming services where it is possible more people will actually see it? It just feels like window for a theatrical showing of this movie is long gone. I think it could be one of those movies that might be successful on a streamer where it would tank in the theaters.

Then again, maybe the accountants have crunched the numbers and said a theatrical release is more cost effective.

  • #25845

Disney are prepared to move films to streaming when it makes sense to them.

‘Artemis Fowl’ is going to Disney+ and it cost at least as much as ‘New Mutants’ (and has been hanging around for as long).

So, yes, someone figures this is their best business move.

  • #25846

There could be contractual obligations to release it in cinemas too.

  • #25847

There could, but it’s a Fox movie and Disney owns that studio and everything associated with it.

They’re also putting Hamilton on Disney+ and that was meant to have a cinema release first.

People seeing it isn’t as important as how much it earns. If that was the aim then air it free to air on ABC.

For all the hype about the Trolls sequel doing well with a VOD release, making $100m on domestic release, there are a lot of things to consider. The original Trolls made $153m at the domestic box office and $344m overall. Now with a VOD release you get to keep more of the money but we can forget that Trolls made $70m in the US home market, which is being cannibalised here by people who watched it at home already.

There’s also the fact that in many parts of the world people will go to the cinema but they ain’t ever paying $20 to stream at home. America’s higher income plus lower piracy rate and tougher controls mean I’d expect other markets to fall far short of that.

It also did that all of that with a grand total of zero competition for new material.

So as far as I can make the numbers it showed a market was wiling to pay and probably helped their cashflow a lot but made a significant loss of income over a worldwide cinema release, followed by a home release. We still don’t know how long this thing will go on, if cinemas remain closed most places for most of the year then I think decisions can change but to me the reason Disney is still pushing it for theatrical release is that’s the best way to make the most money.

  • #26134

Yeah, that’s my take on it too. I know the people behind Trolls are trying to push it as a success but the $100m home takings compared to the $350m global haul for the previous movie, in addition to the cannibalisation of the home release afterwards, makes me think that they’d have to be taking a fuck of a lot more in terms of share to even come close.

It’s why I don’t see Disney taking the route that some people are suggesting of bunging something like Black Widow out on a home cinema release. For movies expected to take a billion dollars like the MCU movies I don’t think there’s a hope of coming close through VOD even at a premium price.

(I feel as though films for adults are an even riskier prospect as a premium rental than the kids movies. With Trolls I think there was an element of parents needing something to keep the kids occupied. But with adults they’re putting a £16 rental in competition with every other cheap or free entertainment option that is open to us. You’d have to really want to watch that specific movie.)

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #26154

in addition to the cannibalisation of the home release afterwards,

Which is probably an understated number. “The Numbers’ is the only place I know that covers that and they specify only DVD and Blu-Ray sales in north America, not anyone who bought or rented a movie on iTunes or Amazon or wherever. As with comics, digital revenue effectively becomes invisible unless someone boasts about it.

For just over a decade from around the mid 90s films made more revenue from home release that at the box office, while that fell away a lot it has kind of been regarded as having disappeared entirely. It is still a hefty chunk.

But with adults they’re putting a £16 rental in competition with every other cheap or free entertainment option that is open to us.

The other element is the size of the audience. Now if you have a couple of kids who cannot go to a cinema unattended you’ll be paying maybe $30 minimum on a trip before you get to snacks. So $20 doesn’t sound too bad. If the film is ‘Death of Stalin’ for example I can tell you the only person from my household going to that is me. So I’m not paying $20 for it at home on release day, I’d either go to see it in the cinema or wait until it falls onto a subscription service.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #26180

Yeah that’s true. A family movie trip for me and my wife and kids is probably £50 when you take into account snacks etc., so £16 is a decent enough discount. But for a movie with more limited appeal in the household that discount is less or non-existent.

Other thoughts- this version of Koenig seems less of a putz. I’m glad Mac and Daisy’s reactions were toned down. We all know that blacks and women were treated poorly.
