So that’s Cleese and Gilliam down. With Chapman, Jones and out of play, it’s just Palin and Idle left in the running to be a reasonable human being and a Python.

That’s absolute bollocks when it comes to ‘Black Panther’. The whole film is based on an ideological argument between the protagonist and the antagonist and the movie spent a lot of time articulating both sides of the argument.

Yup. I should also add that the specific bits I was referring to from the interview were these:

    >>”I hated Black Panther. It makes me crazy. It gives young black kids the idea that this is something to believe in. Bullshit. It’s utter bullshit. I think the people who made it have never been to Africa. They went and got some stylist for some African pattern fabrics and things. But I just I hated that movie, partly because the media were going on about the importance of bullshit.”<<

  • #9967

He’s just lashing out, an angry old man who has been picking fights all his career but it’s a pity he uses that argument.

Firstly, and most importantly, because he’s wrong about that film in particular. He should be holding it up as a example of a big film that is about something real and which does engage the audience and ask them to think about the issues of the story.

And also, more sadly realy, Gilliam’s entire filmmography is about the importance of bullshit, in the sense of lies, half-truths, legends, fables, fairytales and dreams.

It’s a ridiculous statement from him.

  • #9969

Yeah, exactly. And honestly, his picking Black Panther as his target leaves an especially bad taste after the whole “I tell the world I’m a black lesbian now” thing. Especially given how his anti-diversity rant made me think about his own movies and how somehow, he never seems to have gotten around to casting a black actor (unless I’m forgetting something, but right now I can’t think of any black characters in any of his movies).

    What did Cleese do?

  • #9983

Cleese has generally been a bit unpleasant and conservative for a while now. A bit of a little Englander mentality I think.

    Re: Gilliam,

Given that the cast and crew have a lot of people of continental African origin involved with the movie (Hell, Wakanda’s language is Xhosha), and BP’s box office numbers in Africa, his statement is even more tone deaf.  Of course, production reality isn’t what he was going for.

  • #9992

Well I didn’t read the whole article, but again, he’s not entirely wrong… I mean, we are talking about a “vision for a positive Africa” sure, but it’s also a completely manufactured vision by Disney, so yeah, it’s inherently bullshit. But whatever, I’m all for black folks to get black superheros too… I’m not a partisan of that kind of racial thought, but whatever… doesn’t hurt me in anyway either…

  • #10000

There are valid criticisms to be made of Black Panther and the way Disney quite cynically cashed in on some elements of the story and concept, but I don’t think Gilliam is articulating those criticisms, and what he says doesn’t seem very well-founded.

  • #10006

Also it’s not really a creation of Disney. A few aspects but as usual they are generally pretty faithful to the source material, the Wakanda concept goes back to Lee and Kirby in the comics and refined by several  creators since.

  • #10007

No, I get it, with the context I get how what he said is dumb… I was just saying, the quote posted above was not entirely incorrect. Also, I’m not sure if the source material being created by two NY jewish kids is necessarily better as an argument, but sure, point taken… =P

  • #10011

Hardly kids, they were in their late 40s. :-)

It’s a fair point when discussing the racial politics of it all but it’s why I added the bits later refined by black writers like Priest, Hudlin and Coates.

Yeah. I saw him on his Last Chance to See tour, and there was an air of mean old man about him that kind of spoiled the whole thing a little bit.

New trailer supervised by myself, co-writer @knatelee and color corrected by the great @peter_deming arrives January 6th. We’re very excited to share it with you! In theaters everywhere April 3rd!

Yup. Those two character stills from the Marvel shows did nothing for me – or anyone, I’d guess. It all feels like they came out of the gate a little early, before they had the programming to back it up.

I’m always shocked at how many comic news stories quote BC for rumors.  As soon as I see those quotes, I generally stop reading.

  • #11034

Well I mean, it’s not like those other sites are any better… it’s all fuckin’ clickbait anyways, of course they’re gonna run any bullshit that sounds remotely interesting, because clickbait…

Yup. And if enough of them run it, a rumour becomes semi-legitimate because it’s been on so many “news sources” and then somebody has to come out and react by saying it’s not true and then everybody becomes suspicious because, would they actually deny it if there wasn’t fire to this smoke and so on. Bloody people having too much time on their hands.

  • #11208

  • #11210

Hollywood really needs to calm down with all the trailers before a movies release. I mean it’s only been a little over two years since the first trailer….Slow it down a little..

It looks ok I guess. I’m quite surprised to see Disney even bothering with a theatrical release after Dark Phoenix bombed.

  • #11211

Ach, that doesn’t look too terrible.

  • #11230

As a horror fan I’m in.

i wonder if Disney went ahead with this to see how scary they would get away with making Multiverse of Madness.

  • #11233

the characters look fairly authentic. the horror aspect fits. normally don’t give horror flicks the time of day but my love for these characters might encourage me to go see this when it finally comes out.

  • #11237

It looks ok I guess. I’m quite surprised to see Disney even bothering with a theatrical release after Dark Phoenix bombed.

They’ve made it so I guess they might as well at least try to make some money back on it.

It feels like there isn’t a lot to lose here. If it does well then they get a bit of cash and maybe even a new direction for the X-movies that’s successful. If it does badly it can’t bury the X-Men films any more than Dark Phoenix did. At worst they lose a bit more cash.

    https://collider.com/christian-bale-thor-love-and-thunder-cast/

I’m glad Bale seems to be going for some lighter roles recently, even if I hated Vice.

  • #11247

I would have said Bale seems too serious to fit the the tone they’re using for Thor these days, but you remind me I did not see Vice.

So, who would he play? Balder? Dario Agger?

I cant think of many major Thor characters that have not been used (assuming he is not the Enchantress).

  • #11248

Bale is fairly light in Ford v Ferrari/Le Mans ’66 too.

    Beta Ray Bale?

  • #11257

Actually I think it might have to do more with contracts rather than “eh we’ve got it”… Haven’t seen that trailer but, no need, it’s a FoxMen movie, I don’t really care all that much… I do wonder if they fixed anything since though…

  • #11261

  • #11262

    Beta Ray Bale?

    CBR seems to agree:

    https://www.cbr.com/thor-love-and-thunder-christian-bale-should-play-beta-ray-bill/

  • #11310

They’ve made it so I guess they might as well at least try to make some money back on it.

Yup exactly. I like to remind people that since digital distribution of films pretty much all the cost now is in making it. In the old days each print would be an investment of thousands per screen, you could lose a lot if it bombed. Now it’s averaged out at $100 per cinema, so if only 20 people watch it at $10 a ticket you’ve made the distribution cost back.

As long as a cinema is willing to show it then go ahead. It’s next to impossible to be worse off.

There’s potentially a reputational thing if a film is a stinker but as has been said, the last two X-Men films have been so poorly received that risk has really been negated.

    The trailer looks fine anyway.

  • #11436

Bale is fairly light in Ford v Ferrari/Le Mans ’66 too.

And in American Hustle, wasn’t he?

Cool if he really is in Thor.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Director Scott Derrickson Drops Out

    https://variety.com/2020/film/news/doctor-strange-in-the-multiverse-of-madness-director-scott-derrickson-drops-out-marvel-1203462569/

  • #11591

Hum… that doesn’t bode well… Oh well, I hope they hire someone with visual flair, since Doc 2 is one of those I’m still looking forward to, just ’cause of the visuals…

  • #11595

I wonder what the sticking point was? What did he want that Marvel didn’t, or vice versa?

  • #11598

    Several possibilities:

    1. He wanted more money and threatened to step down if he didn’t get it. Marvel called his bluff. EP credit means nothing.

    2. Genuine creative differences over the direction of the movie, likely related to expanding the Multiverse concept for use in Marvels other films. EP credit means nothing.

    3. He had a serious fight with one of the big name actors – Cumberbatch or Olsen maybe, and they asked Marvel to remove him from the project.

    44. Personal factors have led to him stepping down and he doesn’t want to make this public, so Marvel agreed to publicise it as creative differences.

  • #11599

I would assume in this situation it’s probably true creative differences. Derrikson dropped out of the Snowpiecer show for the same reason.

He’s a horror director and they keep talking about Multiverse being a horror movie but Feige recently walked that back a bit. Perhaps they walked it back more than Derrikson was willing to do.

  • #11601

    We can only speculate.

Derrickson isn’t in any danger of losing work but Marvel is the biggest game in town now and every director probably wants points on the back end.

There’s definitely a house style and a larger plan, but it’s been a while since Edgar Wright and Party Jenkins. I think Marvel are a little more compromising as long as it doesn’t compromise the brand.  Then again, Whedon, Favreau and Gunn have all had their issues (not Peyton Reed though- he seems like as good little soldier).

Derrickson seemed to really be into the gig, and liked the mythos, so I’I’mdefinitely curious what the real story is here. Dr Strange didn’t make Black Panther or Ragnarok money so I think he has less capital with Marvel than Waititi and Coogler (who are still in the stable).

  • #11647

Until we see some indication otherwise I think it probably is creative differences, it has been for enough directors to underline that Marvel is “my way or the highway”.

EP credit means… well there’s no regulated definition of it. It can be a vanity credit for someone’s partner or a way of rewarding someone (often a writer) extra credit that would otherwise violate union rules. It can come with a decent financial reward, but that will be down to whatever deal he and Marvel have? Which we don’t know of course.

I wonder who they’ll get now? Another horror director?

So my godmother is Gillian Armstrong who directed the 1994 little women movie.

She told me once that creative differences is usually code for personal problems, because half of Hollywood are alcoholics and addicts, and naturally if someone needs help they don’t want the paparazzi to know. Paparazzi being paparazzi know this too so there’s a double edge to it, if there’s a legitimate problem.

For this reason I’m always sceptical whenever I read about ‘creative differences’. You’ve got to take those media releases at their word though.

  • #11733

I think we have to be careful about viewing all Hollywood behaviour through one person’s interpretation of it, even if they are experienced and involved in the industry.

I’m sure ‘creative differences’ is sometimes used as a pretext to disguise other reasons, but I’m sure it often is genuine creative differences too. Especially given what we know of Marvel’s way of working.

  • #11738

You’re not the boss of me, Dave.

I was just making what I hoped was an interesting observation, not an accusation.

Derrickson by all accounts is a pretty cool guy and good friends with the original Dr Strange writer,Robert Cargill, who started out as a film and TV columnist on AICN.

  • #11741

You’re not the boss of me, Dave. I was just making what I hoped was an interesting observation, not an accusation.

Yeah and I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, just that I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion as being necessarily more likely than genuine creative differences, especially where Marvel (and Disney more widely) is concerned.

Between the MCU movies and Star Wars we’ve seen plenty of directors move off projects for what would appear to be genuine creative-oriented reasons.

  • #11744

I’m not a fan of jumping to conclusions either which is why my first post in the topic attempted to summarise four possibilities.

I don’t really care anymore, to be honest. I wonder who they’ll get to replace him.

  • #11745

    Rachel Talalay!

  • #11748

I read that article suggesting her.

She seems like a smart workhorse pick to get it done, like Peyton Reed.

I like the suggestion of Sam Raimi though.

  • #11750

I read that article suggesting her.

I hadn’t seen any article, I just always felt that she deserved something more off her Doctor Who work. And the tone and subject matter of Doctor Strange is not that far off.

That’s cool if other people are suggesting her too though. I only mentioned it as a bit of a pie-in-the-sky possibility.

  • #11751

I like the suggestion of Sam Raimi though.

I like that too. Does he have any experience with superhero movies?

  • #11752

    https://comicbook.com/marvel/2020/01/10/directors-doctor-strange-multiverse-madness-replace-derrickson/

It’s actually a pretty reasonable list.  There’s a few impossibilities – Raimi is probably one unless they delay it, which I doubt they will, but I was impressed with the thought behind some of the choices.

  • #11756

They should get the crazy Russian guy… forgot his name, but the guy who directed Wanted… he’d be a very neat choice for Doc Strange, considering that’s how I would’ve done his movie in the first place, as in visually similar to Night/Day Watch…

  • #11757

From that article Brad Bird is a pretty good choice too.

I’d love Raimi to do it but it probably won’t happen.

Talalay could be good I think. And I feel like it’s more likely to be one of those ‘step up’ choices than a more established director.

  • #11759

They should get the crazy Russian guy… forgot his name, but the guy who directed Wanted… he’d be a very neat choice for Doc Strange, considering that’s how I would’ve done his movie in the first place, as in visually similar to Night/Day Watch…

    Timurberkmentov or something.

I think he had a falling out with Marvel over the Incredible Hulk when it went to Lewis Lattasier, if i recall correctly.

  • #11761

Raimi would want a lot of money and control and the same goes for Brad Bird.

So (my guess) is it’ll be someone experienced, talented, and with less power than either of those guys.

  • #11762

    Yeah obvs Steve

    So much obvs

Youre like captain of the obvious team over there in obvious land.

I say Scorcese should do it.

  • #11776

    That’s disappointing. I like Derrickson.

They should get Party Jenkins to direct.

  • #11784

I don’t know who Party Jenkins is but they sound like a lot of fun.

  • #11796

I don’t know who Party Jenkins is but they sound like a lot of fun.

I don’t know who Party Jenkins is either.

You’ll have to ask Tim’s phone when she wakes up. It was her suggestion. She’s trying her best to be helpful. Although phones don’t really sleep.

Right now she’s likely amalgamating with all the other phones in Kamar-Taj to AI the perfect Doctor Strange sequel.

Should be a lot of fun. I hope they don’t get it Wong.
