First of all, I don’t know how many more movies Cheadle’s gonna be in, but I doubt he’ll be super prominent going forward.

I assumed Ironheart would be the Iron Man replacement.

  • #92875

None of those characters are going to be the primary crew in the same way the phase 1 Avengers were. They’re Disney+ characters or supporting characters in movies.  I’d imagine the movie series will be based around Spider-Man, Wolverine, something to do with Wakanda, some form of Guardians follow-up, Doctor Strange and the F4.

  • #92876

I assumed Ironheart would be the Iron Man replacement.

Probably yeah… I’m not sure what’s the current news on that character, but I reckon Cheadle will “pass the torch” too on a D+ show, like they’ve been doing…

  • #92890

Seems more like they’re setting up a Young Avengers type crew anyway. Kate Bishop, Ms. Marvel, America Chavez, Cassie Lang, Ironheart, etc.

That “direction” pic is definitely missing Spidey, Ant-Man and Doc Strange, but those are three straight white males so I suppose including them would ruin the point.

It is interesting that they would look for something of a hunk to play Wolverine. He had started to get better looking in the comics before the X-men movies, but Jackman really turned him into a sex symbol.

However, what drew me and a lot of kids into the character when I was a teen was that he was a short, lumpy, hairy and (probably) smelly little badass – like the animal. I especially liked the Kent Williams looks for the character:

For me, John Hawkes or Sam Rockwell would better fit the character.

Back in the day, Chris Claremont wanted Bob Hoskins to play Wolverine.

  • #93168

He certainly would have been a good choice for a more accurate depiction. A step up from the Danny Devito fantasy casting.

it is an interesting speculation if they had gone that route and kept the love triangle aspect that had Jean seeing something attractive in a guy everyone else either feared or found offensive and repulsive. She sees minds first. Not faces and obviously she is drawn to emotionally wounded men.

it would be an interesting element to the dynamic that she ends up with Scott not because he’s the classically handsome chad but because from her perspective, he’s much more broken inside than Logan. Going back to the quite unique for its time Simonson/Williams/Muth mini-series WOLVERINE/HAVOC MELTDOWN, I think that would work in the MCU as a series for their Disney+ shows, but replace Havoc with Scott and get down to their basic conflict – Logan wants what Scott has and deep down Scott wants to be Logan (or he wants the freedom fro responsibility and self-image that he thinks Logan has).

Sasha Baron Cohen played a Logan like character in the Brothers Grimaby — he’d be interesting casting.

  • #93172

Bob Hoskins (or Danny Devitto for that matter) would’ve been a terrible choice. I’m sure there’s plenty of short ugly and hairy actors who look more like Wolverine.

Sasha Baron Cohen is also a horrible choice… starting with the fact that he’s super tall and looks NOTHING like Wolverine.

  • #93173

    Sam Rockwell

I approve, that’s inspired. Sam Rockwell is rarely bad in anything, either. A good actor.

    Good answer from Urban though:

“Oh really? It’s flattering, but you have to rationally think about it. I’m what, two years younger than Hugh Jackman? I mean, if I was a studio looking to cast someone as Wolverine, I’d pick someone I’ll get three films out of. You’re not going to get three films out of Karl Urban unless you want a 65-year-old Wolverine.”

And, I mean, he also is already in the MCU, of course.

Man, poor Skurge. How quickly they forgot your sacrifice!

“… You’re not going to get three films out of Karl Urban unless you want a 65-year-old Wolverine.”

Yeah, but Logan is like going on 200 years old.

Bob Hoskins (or Danny Devitto for that matter) would’ve been a terrible choice. I’m sure there’s plenty of short ugly and hairy actors who look more like Wolverine.

I doubt there would be too many of them who were as good at the work as Bob Hoskins. Hoskins was a character actor who could carry a movie and, in an X-men movie, it’s an ensemble cast and story so someone like Hoskins would’ve been a great actor to balance out the cast.

Still, that was back then when action heroes didn’t all have to be unbelievably attractive. Bruce Willis is a good example.  Still, older action heroes have always been a thing too. From Charles Bronson and Burt Lancaster in their later careers to Keanu Reeves, Liam Neeson and the whole Expendables cast today.

Honestly, when I think of Wolverine, I imagine he’d have the effect on people like Mickey Rourke has in his more recent movies.

    Or Johnny Depp nowadays.

Honestly, even though Marvel will likely look for a younger actor – not a kid – I don’t think they should rule out actors late 40’s or early 50’s with a heavy presence in front of the camera.

As a point of reference, Hugh Jackman was 32 when he started playing Wolverine in 2000. He played him for 17 years.

Marvel will want someone younger so they can have maybe around 20+ good years out of the character. It would help if that actor looked a bit older than their actual age, like with Jackman.

I am not sure who would be a good pick to go with my criteria above.

Al, do you know what sub-text is?

that is not a fair question because the creator of that picture is saying that the first set of Avengers who are all white men(ex. Natasha)  are all being replaced by women or black men and that is the wrong direction. That is both sexist and racist. Would you be offended if someone told you that replacing Tony Stark with Rhodey is headed in the wrong direction? that women and minorities can’t do the same work as white men?

It can be accidentally done. I had a work colleague, a Muslim girl, that posted a far right US video on Facebook about how Europe would be majority Muslim by 2030. She read it from her perspective as a positive thing. I had to point out firstly that it was factually nonsense and secondly it was fuelled by hate and racism against her kind.

Wonder Man is an interesting premise. His backstory related to Vision and Wanda is a little too convoluted but not that much more than She-Hulk, and I’d hope the series handles it a bit more simply than Moon Knight. However, there is a lot that could be mined from that love triangle.

still, the idea of a television or movie actor/stuntman with actual superpowers was one of the more interesting elements of his long biography. It would be funny if he were a stuntman for an action star and that star turns out to be Hercules operating incognito on Earth. He doesn’t need a stuntman but he likes having Simon around – sort of like Rick and Cliff in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood – to keep him out of trouble.

Marvel has loved that strapline for ages. They were using it 2 decades ago although the number was 5,000 then.

How many will get a show or movie? Well if we look at this year 5 new characters are leading shows or movies so at that rate it would take them 1,400 years to get through them all.

7,000 characters actually sounds low considering the sheer number of comic book issues that Marvel have put out since the ’60s. I’m assuming by “characters” they mean “anybody with a name that appeared in a comic book” rather than the actual main heroes and villains only.

  • #94100

Which does remind me that Peter David’s run on X-Factor would be pretty good for Disney+ and Rick Remender’s X-Force a good build toward a more Marvel direction for Deadpool. Once they start rolling out the X-Men, I can see it dominating the Marvel media as much as it does (or did) in the comics. Sort of the same way Spider-Man took the spotlight once he was put alongside the Avengers. He was treated like the Second Coming of Tony Stark… almost literally… while Iron Man was still making movies.

That’s really what’s missing in any picture of Marvel’s future. I don’t know if it will change everything, but the X-Men really are the next big “phase” for Marvel and how they handle it will have a transformative impact, pro and con.

There is an interesting scientific theory that there may be up to three times as much water deep under the Earth (like 400 miles) than on the surface. It would be interesting to go with a kind of “Hollow Earth” theory for the existence of Atlantean civilizations, the Mole-people and strange places like the Savage Land.

it’s the Thanos/Darkseid issue in reverse. Darkseid first appeared in comics in 1970, while Thanos didn’t show up until 1973; but because Thanos appeared in the MCU first, to most filmgoers Darkseid would seem like a cheap knockoff.

The Sub-Mariner debuted in 1939, and Aquaman two years later in 1941; but Arthur Curry hit the movie screens first, so the MCU has to make Namor distinct and different now.
