I was watching a few scenes again and the new Sorcerer Supreme (since Strange was gone the 5 years) left early in the movie, then when Parker recruited MJ and the kid (Ned), Ned said a few words to Strange that a little magic ran in his family. These movies leave these scenes that they can come back to and develop into a plot.

That pays off within the movie itself, though, when Ned opens the portals that find the other Spideys.

A man in a mask walks into  bank and hands the cashier a note saying “I would like to withdrew $12,000 in cash.” I think I would be a bit suspicious of that to be honest.

A man in a mask walks into  bank and hands the cashier a note saying “I would like to withdrew $12,000 in cash.” I think I would be a bit suspicious of that to be honest.

I mean, who uses cash these days???

Years ago, I had to take out a few thousand in cash for a vacation. At the bank, the teller saw my account, ID, and driver’s license. The teller went back and consulted with the manager and then they gave me the cash.

I don’t know… If this was Denzel or Halle Berry, this wouldn’t have happened as they are very recognizable. I know the COVID mask didn’t help but should Coogler wear a shirt saying “I’m the director of Black Panther 2?” Does he have to now?

I don’t know why the teller went to the police after the ID was established, but there have been incidents recently of black clients wanting to cash a big check and even after the proper ID, the teller still called the police. This black woman doctor was almost arrested over it and now she filed a huge lawsuit. More money for her.

I know that the treatment of innocent black customers is a serious and too-common issue in America, but I don’t get the sense that it was purely racism at play in this incident. The way he acted, and the remarkable amount of cash involved, seems very suspicious. From that brief film it seemed that the police acted reasonably during the incident, and Coogler doesn’t seems to raise any complaints in his statements.

Maybe there was racism involved in the cashier’s decision (we will never know), but there seem to be enough other factors here that I don’t think that should be the automatic assumption.

  • #87303

    True to an extent.

Coogler is obviously not readily recognizable like black celebs in the public eye. I wouldn’t know who he is off the top myself.

Still, the calling of the police way too quick.

    Thanks… brings back memories.

Forrest Whitaker, the Best Actor Oscar Winner years ago, was in this deli store about 2 blocks from where I live. One of the workers there didn’t know him, took him for a shoplifter because he was black and in street clothes, pushed him against the wall calling for police.

This made the local news etc.

Never ends, but it is not what the black person should do or should have done, but the overall approach to begin with.

Also okay with that, that show was totally gimmicky and is good as a one-season deal. It’s not like they could re-do the same thing anyways, so a S2 would’ve been VASTLY different.

I do wish we get more Wanda and Vision somewhere down the line, those 2 actors are great.

  • #88094

Well we’re definitely seeing Wanda in Doctor Strange soon.

I agree it’s a show that would be hard to follow up, that sitcom/mystery structure can only feasibly be done once. I actually assumed there wouldn’t be a second season but I suppose people are used to the normality of TV being you just carry on if it’s successful. The MCU and streaming is a bit different to that old network TV model though really.

Yup. It’s interesting that they’re using Wanda in Strange; I wonder where we will see Vision pop up again. I am completely fine if this all happens in different team-up movies, but it’d also be really cool to give the two of them a movie of their own.

  • #88137

I wonder if they’ll try to adapt King’s Vision series at some point…

I suspect they kind of already did. While MCU films and shows rarely directly adapt comics, they borrow very heavily from the concepts, the home loving sitcom concept really only exists in comics in the Tom King series. They both work around the same ideas of the idyllic 1950s 2.4 kids family which is at its heart a falsehood.

In Wandavision it is Wanda driving it and in King’s Vision series it is Vision but they mine too much of the same ideas for them to go down that path for me.

I went to my Disney + for some shows and couldn’t find DD even with the search engine.

Then I went to settings, saw that it was set to PG-14 and no content rated above that would show.

So I edited the settings to max (MA) and then Daredevil showed.

This is just to say that if you try it and get frustrated that something doesn’t show up, go to settings and check it out.

    Until next time. 😂

The Disney + fuss over ‘mature’ content seems to be strangely US only (or maybe North America).

Maybe they feel the branding in where they are headquartered is more sensitive politically but here and in Europe it’s all just bunched together. I open Disney + in a much more censorious country than the US and The King’s Man and Walking Dead are on the promo banners.

For the last few months here the main thing they were promoting for D+ was Pam & Tommy (with a very quick “18+ only” at the end of every ad).

They’ve also completely abandoned the “Star on Disney+” branding, possibly as it was getting confused with Starz (though probably not, as nobody here knows what Starz is).

  • #88218

It’s branded ‘Hotstar’ here. The origins of which I don’t really know but seems comes from some previous branding of Hulu content in India.

Anyway they just lump it in together like Netflix, you can control content by user, which I do for my kids that are set at around PG13 level but the default view is all their content is shared and promoted equally. Pam and Tommy will appear next to Pixar unless you filter it manually.

I dunno, I guess I’ll decide later this week… I do like what they’re doing with Strange… funny how he’s become the one interesting part of the whole MCU (for me, that is) since I was never a big Strange fan.

Edit: Nevermind, it comes out next month =P

  • #89011

I rewatched Spider-Man: No Way Home last night as the Blu-Ray is now out. I enjoyed it just as much the second time, and was happy that even without the novelty of the surprises the story still holds up well, and has a very Spider-Man theme of second chances at the heart of it all.

Overall I still feel like this trio of Spider-Man movies was fun but flawed – with far too much focus on the Iron Man Jr aspects – but this final movie avoids a lot of that to tell its own story, and leaves the character in a place where I’d be keen to see more. It’s almost like the whole trilogy is an extended origin story for a more classic Spidey.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #89057

yeah I’m kinda torn on this trilogy… the cast was generally good, Holland is a great young SM, but I’m not specially a fan of what they did with the whole thing, specially the fact that yes, it does feel like a VERY extended origin story for a more classic SM. I didn’t like the bait and switch of them basically avoiding the whole uncle Ben thing only to replace him first with Stark, and then with May in a more explicit way… kind of deflates the whole point of not rehashing it.

But I guess if you look at it as an Ultimate SM kind of deal, it works rather well, and I suppose the entire MCU is basically the Ultimate Universe 2.0, so sure why not.

  • #89091

I’d just like to see a Spidey movie focusing entirely on this Spidey and this MJ and Ned. I mean, apart from whatever plot there is. We really didn’t get enough of that.

IIRC, when the two Visions were fighting and discussing the Ship of Thesus philosophy, the white android allowed the other Vision to “download” himself into him. So, now that the spell is over, the Vision still lives in the android. He just flew upward and that was it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up in the upcoming movie tbh.

What criteria do you use to determine what qualifies as a superhero movie?

I ask because films like SIN CITY and 300 and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT are not about superheroes; if they are included because they are based on comic books, then why not include ROAD TO PERDITION or A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE? And HERCULES, SOLOMON KANE and some of the others you included are based on myths and/or fictional characters, not comic book superheroes, even though some of them have been adapted in comics.

I realize this must have taken quite a bit of time, and I congratulate you for your effort. Don’t take this as criticism, I’m just curious about your thought process here in decided what films to include and leave out.

  • #89414

Yeah I’m gonna tweak it a little bit and post another link ’cause I want to add some stuff and remove some stuff (seems you can add but not remove without deleting the whole thing)…

Sooo, the criteria is, like I noted “SH and some SH-adjacent stuff”… I see your point about 300 and Sin City, but let’s put it this way, Batman and many other characters are not “super” either, but all of them are very comic book-y heros/superheros, and their movies and stories are, whereas something like Road to Perdition is a straight up drama story and movie.

I was gonna take the 30 Days of Night movies out though, however… oh and the manga adaptations too. GITS, Alita, Dragon Ball, Avatar… plus the AvP movies, and the old Marvel movies (Corman’s F4, Nick Fury are TV releases, so they’re out) except maybe Howard.

As for Hercules, that particular movie with the Rock is a CB adaptation, and Hercules is basically THE proto-superhero, so I figured why not… As for Solomon Kane, I actually don’t remeber it all that well, I thought it was a supernatural movie but maybe not… so I might take that one out too, along with Priest, maybe some others.

The overall criteria is live action theater releases, because I had to limit the list, otherwise it’d take forever and be gigantic, but speaking of which, I was thinking of adding more stuff, particularly the Underworld series, because while not associated with SHs, damn, they’re very much “inspired” by Blade (notice the quote marks) and the movies would be considered SH movies these days, tbh. I was gonna take out the Robocop movies, but they seem to be on every non-CB superhero list, and hey, if Robocop can be a superhero, I guess Selene can too =P

So if you guys have some other suggestions, shoot, since I’m gonna have to do it again =P

    Solomon Kane

He is a character created by Robert E. Howard, who also created Conan and King Kull, back in the 1920s/30s. Kane was a Puritan who roamed through Europe and Africa in the early 17th century, fighting evil in all its forms (usually demons and monsters) with his sword and his blunderbuss. No superpowers, but his deeds could be considered “superheroic”.

I’m already updating it, so I’ll give you guys a link when it’s ready, but I guess you can start with that one…

Also, yeah I guess I could add that one, I didn’t think it was theatrical, but it was… also, apparently there’s 2 theatrical Swamp Thing movies… I guess I could add those 2.

He is a character created by Robert E. Howard, who also created Conan and King Kull, back in the 1920s/30s. Cool… I’ll leave it there then… plus I think I need to add the older Conan movies as well, plus that Kull movie while I’m at it.

I wouldn’t take that as gospel or that it means much. American Horror Story has been considered a “miniseries” as each season told a completely different story and most of the seasons are connected.

I think that is someone making big assumptions off very little information.

  • #89747

I feel like it kind of told its story. The natural follow up seems like Kate going into a Young Avengers film, with Clint maybe showing up in a cameo as her guy in the chair.

Wandavision and Falcon/Winter Solider seem like the ideal model. Tell a side story while setting the character up for a larger theatrical role.
I imagine something like that must be part of the deal for the actors. I doubt Oscar Isaac wants to be doing multiple seasons of a tv show, when he could just spin it into an appearance in a billion dollar film instead.

Man, it took Waititi five years since Ragnarok to make this. We deserve so much more of his Thor awesomeness! That guy really needs to pick up his pace. I mean, given that all he did in the meantime was to write, direct and act in an award-winning indie movie about the Holocaust and Hitler as a kid’s imaginary friend, create a bunch of TV series, write an Incal screenplay, prepare production on a Star Wars movie, play roles in some big budget movies and direct a documentary and some TV show episodes on other series.
