The MCU! The Disney+ series! Sony! (For the time being anyway.)
Talk about any and all Marvel movies and TV here.

The option is to pay a $30 one time fee to watch the movie online for 3 months before it becomes available for regular streaming on Disney. Given that you will pay as much to watch in the theatre (July 9 premiere date) at the same time and the pandemic is still not over. Is it worth it?
It depends how many of you there are. It’s highly unlikely you are going to pay $30 for a single movie ticket.
It’s like with Pay Per View boxing the price is pretty exorbitant but most people invite friends around and they all chip in say $10 so it works out okay on an individual basis.
Apparently you can log into your Disney+ account on up to four devices at any given time, so theoretically I suppose you could let others log in using your account and split the cost of the Premier Access with them. There’s also some sort of GroupWatch feature that lets up to seven different accounts watch the same thing at the same time. However, they likely also have disgruntled Disney wifi wizards cracking down on such things when it comes to the premier content.
Take with a grain of salt:

The guy is super fuckin annoying to watch, but the problem solving is pretty neat, and the end result is actually pretty spectacular… I think he could really make many with the solo frisbee thing too:

Yeah I mean really all subscription stuff is open to that. Any of us really could share a Marvel Unlimited or Comixology account as long as you have enough trust there (as there are payment details connected). Netflix say in their terms you have to be in the same household but I’ve been travelling overseas on business and watching shows while my kids are watching in Malaysia so there’s no checks there really if you are or not.
Tickets for Black Widow go on sale here on Monday. The cinema chain here is advertising it as opening “exclusively in cinemas on Wed 7 July!”
Which is technically true, but does not acknowledge that it will only be exclusive for two days, and will be on D+ for €22 on the Friday.
I’m not sure if the US are getting the grace period of a few days of it being only in cinemas? I guess it’ll be available in previews on the Thursday night before it premieres at Midnight ET?

Huh. I thought the teaser was a much stronger trailer. That all made it look a bit generic.
Mmm yeah that trailer didn’t really move the needle for me… it still looks like a Disney flick, instead of a MCU flick.
It’s kinda sad they did what they did with Kingsley… I mean, I absolutely loved that whole thing, but he really looked like a cool modern version of the Mandarin, so it would’ve been nice if he had really been the Mandarin.
Also, wait, do they expect people to get hyped for a cameo of the villain of that one move that 1) people didn’t see 2) people don’t remember or 3) people don’t consider canon?? ooook then…
Lou Ferrigno On What the New She-Hulk Series Should Avoid (Exclusive)

Nice to see Black Widow getting good reviews. I’m very much looking forward to getting a proper Marvel fix again. The TV shows are fine, but they’re a different kind of drug.
Speaking of the TV shows:
Marvel director says any shows before ‘WandaVision’ aren’t MCU canon
Nice to see Black Widow getting good reviews.
Really? I’ve seen mostly lukewarm reviews… basically “it’s decent, but nothing memorable”.
Really? I’ve seen mostly lukewarm reviews… basically “it’s decent, but nothing memorable”.
I haven’t actually read any reviews yet (and won’t, before I’ve seen the movie, in this case), just noticed the good RT score and one or two (I think the Guardian’s) popping up in my FB feed that seemed to like it, from the headlines.
But a decent Marvel action flick is fine for me, I don’t necessarily need a Black Widow movie to be particularly memorable.
Ehh so far it’s just the critics… I don’t tust them all that much, specially under the current conditions… but yeah, I’m sure it’s decent, and full of jokes that undercut any dramatic moment =P
I did hear that Taskmaster was a complete waste, but I guess at this point no one should be surprised about a MCU villain being a waste, since most of them have been…
When is it coming out anyways? Is it gonna be same day release on torr… I mean Disney Plus? =P

Yeah, it starts on July 8th (in Germany at least), which is the day before the D+ release, I think. Makes sense.
I’m waiting until the end of the month anyway, as my kid is off vacationing with his mother until then, and I want to see it with him.

Well, it is nice to see Jon back to his old self.

Oi! You leave Space Truckers alone, that movie is a classic!
“I still hunt out the good shit because I don’t want to be in Black Widow,” the True Detective actor told the newspaper. “It looks like garbage to me. It looks like a bad video game. I’m embarrassed for those people. I’m embarrassed for Scarlett! I’m sure she got paid five, seven million bucks, but I’m embarrassed for her. I don’t want to be in those movies. I really don’t. I’ll find that kid director that’s gonna be the next [Stanley] Kubrick and I’ll act for him instead.”
Sure you will, Stephen. Sure you will.
Looking at Marvel and DC:
Marvel is more organized, has a better plan, and has more ambition. DC trips over themselves in their projects.
Marvel is better than DC by default.
Now is that saying a lot or a little?
Marvel is better than DC by default.
Not necessarily though… more organized doesn’t implicitly mean better, just means more organized.
Jonathan Majors, an African American actor, has been cast as Kang.
In the comics, Kang’s real name is Nathaniel Richards (31st century scholar) and is possibly a descendent of Nathaniel Richards, Reed Richards’ time traveling father.
Assuming some of the comic book history stays constant with the MCU, I wonder if we may have a black Fantastic Four. I would have no problem with that and think it could be a very interesting take on the characters.
Thoughts?
They’re not going to base the casting of the Fantastic Four on some minor plot point about Kang’s lineage (and obviously a white guy could have a black descendant, especially 1000 years down the line).
Washington would be good, but I’d rather him do stuff like Tenet than be tied in to the MCU full-time.
Not a big fan of that art style. It looks good in the action scenes, but very awkward whenever someone is speaking.
It feels like Polygon Studios’ 3D animation, but not as polished.
Sure, but let’s not discriminate against the robots.
Not necessarily though… more organized doesn’t implicitly mean better, just means more organized.
Yeah, I mean, theoretically the more disorganised nature of DC means there’s a chance of getting more variety. I guess the Phoenix Joker movie, Suicide Squad 2 and The Batman speak to that. It’s just taken them forever to get to that point.
Michio Kaku rules!
I used to listen to him all the time back in the day when he had radio show in WBAI in NYC..
As for the next Thor movie:
That makes me think of this:

I’ve no problem with a black Mr Fantastic, but I’m hoping they quietly drop the bit with Kang being a descendent of Reed/Reed’s father. It seems an unnecessary embellishment to the character. It was weird enough that Marvel decided to make most of their time-travelling villains the same guy, but that they’re related to the time-travelling father of one of the FF too? Not all time-travellers have to know each other.
Actually, tbh, I do have a problem with a black FF. It is the same reason I had with Michael B. Jordan cast as Johnny Storm. It is really gimmick casting and looks very forced and shoehorned. Nobody bought it.
Imho, Marvel should not play games and get the FF right and as true to the comics as they can. Use CGI for the Thing etc.

Honestly, in that whole movie, Jordan as Jonny was the easiest thing to buy.

I think the problem with The Fantastic Four is that the core concept is difficult to update. It’s just so locked into the early 1960s “Space Age” that it just doesn’t translate to modern times. We’ve had guys living on the ISS for months that didn’t turn into big orange rocky monsters, so it seems kind of silly now.
But if they try to update it like they did in the last FF movie, it just doesn’t feel the same as Reed putting everyone on a rocket.
I’m still beating the drum for having the MCU’s FF at least start in the early 1960s.
What could be more contemporary than a private space flight?
A whole series of private space flights.
You all sound like you really want MCU Reed Richards to be an unlikeable arsehole.
So sticking close to the comics, then.
What If Elon Musk Was A Decent Bloke?
Stan Lee himself couldn’t make that plausible.
I’m still beating the drum for having the MCU’s FF at least start in the early 1960s.
Yeah, I mean, they do have a multiverse officially now, and the FF are dimension-travelers, so why the fuck not?
And, you know, I’ve always been in favour of this mainly because I don’t think we need to see another origin, with the FF. Their cosmic adventurers and superstar superheroes, those are the things that would make an FF movie great, and we never really quite got that from any FF movie because it takes forever to get past the fucking origin. Just spider-man this and start with them in full swing, I say, as a family of cosmic adventurers that’s been around for years.
I think you then run into the “why haven’t we heard about them before?” problem that Eternals is also going to have to grapple with.
But there are ways around that. Have them return from a years-long mission or blipped forwards in time or something.
Fanboy version 1 – 4 adventurers doing a multiverse experiment – go through gate and we get different characters back – The FF we know.
Everyone will be – these aren’t the travellers I invested 1/2 movie in, until original Reed comes back as half TheMaker/half Doom.
BOOM.
Of course, fanboy says we then get a tv series of original Sue/Jonny/Grimm trying to survive in a Zombie world, running in parallel.
I’m still beating the drum for having the MCU’s FF at least start in the early 1960s.
They could simply put the four characters on a privately funded space flight to investigate and fly through a cosmic anomaly that ends up giving them powers. What could be more contemporary than a private space flight?
This is a hill I will die on but I think a ‘60s FF is an absolutely terrible idea.
We’ve already had Captain America and Captain Marvel begin in the past then brought to the present. We don’t need another one. Besides, the “fish out of water” trope would only last for the first movie and pretty much dropped after that.
The concept of the FF works better now than ever. We are in the midst of a brand new space race that puts the ‘60s one to shame. We celebrate nerds and geeks. Billionaires going into space is a thing now.
It is so easy to modernize the characters:
Reed – A child prodigy whose inventions and patents have made him a billionaire. He wants to explore the universe and understand everything.
Sue – She runs Reed’s company while he is in the lab inventing and discovering new things. Her nurturing personality keeps everyone together and on track.
Johnny – He’s a extreme sports enthusiast. A rush junkie always looking for the next challenge.
Ben – A childhood friend and pilot. A loyal and dedicated friend despite what happens to him.
Doom – Imagine if the leader of North Korea was a super scientist and sorcerer. That’s Doom and Latveria. (I wouldn’t have Doom appear in the first movie outside of a stinger. Save him a bit.)
Origin – A strange space anomaly has been detected in space. It appears to be unstable and will disappear soon. It’s a race to get to it first. The FF get there first just as it destabilizes and bathes them in strange energy. It changes them and gives them their powers.
This is honestly the best time to have a modern FF.
Yeah, sure. But I still think the origin is the least interesting thing about the FF; getting through that whole setup is just tedious really. No matter what, I just hope they find a way to get past that.
Yeah, sure. But I still think the origin is the least interesting thing about the FF; getting through that whole setup is just tedious really. No matter what, I just hope they find a way to get past that.
My thought on the origin is that it is covered in a “promotional video/news story” we see over the opening credits. Five minutes and it’s done. Get on with the story.
How I see the movie:
– Cold open
– Opening credits with origin “video”
– Story
– Initial credits
– Mid-credits scene
– Main credits
– Stinger teasing Doom
I really think Doom not appear in the first movie. There should be a build up to him. He and Latveria could even be teased in other movies and TV series. I wouldn’t do it for too long as the character has great potential for the MCU.
I think the reason the FF origin is less compelling and doesn’t feel necessary to cover at length is that the incident itself doesn’t really play a big part in their motivations as heroes. It just explains the physical change and powers.
It’s not like Spider-Man or Batman or Iron Man where the story of how they became a hero is a key part of the character overall and essential in understanding them and the reason they become superheroes.
With the FF, they’re science-hero-explorers before they get powers and they’re science-hero explorers afterwards, just with powers. Their personalities aren’t really transformed along with their bodies.
I think Reed’s guilt about Ben does need an emotional tether to the original accident, but that’s really an optional subplot that they don’t necessarily need to explore.

What about Victor appearing, sans the Doctor Doom-part of his personality?

Not in the first movie at least. It’s something that would benefit a lot from developing over time.

I’m not wild on the idea. I think the mask and armor are very much a part of who Doom is.
I would go with the idea that the FF and Doom have been around for a few years. Maybe they all remained when half the universe was gone during the Blip and came into power (pun not intended but will own it) in that time.
I really think the idea of using Kim Jong-un and North Korea as template for Doom and Latveria works so well. A dictator with total control of their country with very little contact with the rest of the world. Little is know about the country except for rare visits, the occasional defector, and propaganda videos. (“Victor von Doom”, the normal looking guy, is simply be a propaganda tool for the rest of the world. Maybe only a select few in the world, including the FF, know that’s a lie and he no longer looks like that. What is thought to be “ceremonial” armor is his normal attire.) While Doom is a dictator, he genuinely cares for his people and thinks having closed borders protects them. The Blip rattled him and he has doubled down on keeping them safe from outside threats. Now, the way he goes about this is totally fucked up and much like an abuser treats their victim. Doom is an arrogant prick but he does have some sense of honor. I do hope Doom is given some complexity, much like he is in the comics. Loki in the MCU is a decent template but I would never fully “redeem” Doom. He needs to have that villainous aspect that never goes away.
Reed’s guilt
I always thought that explanation was a little bit twee and simplistic. They’re not really ultra-famous celebrities because Reed decided to make it happen. Although maybe it’s in character for him to think he made it all happen.
Love Wieringo’s art though. Gone too soon.

I don’t think it’s supposed to be the explanation for why they’re celebrities, but rather for why Reed would want them to be. I think it works very well because it supplies a new and fitting motivation for doing things that should be just not in his character to do.
But either way, yeah, Reed’s feelings of guilt are important for Reed and Ben’s relationship, but that’s also something than can be established in like five lines of dialogue.
I would go with the idea that the FF and Doom have been around for a few years. Maybe they all remained when half the universe was gone during the Blip and came into power (pun not intended but will own it) in that time.
It’d be a bit weird if that had happened and it hadn’t been mentioned yet in all the post-blip content that came out. I’d still go the multiverse route, I suppose. I do think the opening credits origin thing would work fine (I always liked the way they did that in Hellboy), I’d be quite happy with that.
The cold open could take place in their universe, and the story taking them to ours permanently. I mean, with Multiverse of Madness coming up and everything they’ve been doing in Loki – at this point, why the fuck not?
I don’t think it’s supposed to be the explanation for why they’re celebrities, but rather for why Reed would want them to be.
I don’t know, if you read those pages above Reed is pretty explicit in saying that he gave them all that highly visible stuff – the Baxter building, the costumes, the codenames – specifically to turn them into celebrities as some kind of compensation for the accident. Maybe that’s revisionism on Reed’s part, but it’s what he’s claiming.

Pretty sure I’ll check out all of the movies. So far as the Disney+ shows go, What If, She Hulk and the Guardians special and then I’ll just wait and see what the consensus is on the others.
Now… I am not obligated to (and will definitely not) watch all this.

Good one Anders…
That was funny I will admit.😂
Now, as for time travel stories:
Does the future being a set place to travel take away from free will? It would be given that the future is there and therefore, our lives would just be playing out a cosmic predetermined script. Just saying… Don’t ooze from your ears giving this too much thought.
What do you plan to check out in the upcoming years?
All of them. Every one.

Not if you subscribe to the theory of branching, parallel timelines in which every alternate decision is played out.

Then that would mean that you can’t travel to the future as a specific place. The future would then have infinite destinations.

Hey… I said upthread that Marvel is better organized than DC.
Marvel is better by default.
Now, is that saying much or a little?
For gods sake Marvel. We said we wanted a Fantastic Four film set in the 60’s. Not for the Fantastic Four to be in their 60’s😤.
And this is what happens when you break the Sacred Timeline.
Jeff Bezos = Mr Fantastic
His Brother = The Thing
Wally Funk = Invisible Woman
The Eigtheen Year-Old Kid = Human Torch
Not gonna lie… I watched the launch and landing live on CNN hoping I’d see them develop powers.
Regarding Bezos:
Yes, Amazon workers did pay for this – with lower wages, union busting, a frenzied and inhumane workplace, and delivery drivers not having health insurance during a pandemic.
And Amazon customers are paying for it with Amazon abusing their market power to hurt small business. https://t.co/7qMgpe8u0M
