Don’t sully Paddington with the likes of Sony’s garbage.
Four small screen vets will be bringing Fantastic Four to the big screen.
Marvel Studios announced Wednesday that Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Last of Us), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear), and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) have been tapped to headline the long-in-the-works film.
Pascal will play Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Kirby will star as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Quinn will portray Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Moss-Bachrach will take on the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing.
A Fantastic Four movie set in the MCU was first announced in 2019, not long after the Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox. Matt Shakman, who previously directed Disney+’s WandaVision, will helm the film. It is now slated to be released July 25, 2025.
Pascal’s version of Reed Richards — an engineering whiz who has superhuman elasticity and shapeshifting abilities — won’t be the first one seen in the MCU, as John Krasinski played a version of Reed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meanwhile, WandaVision appeared to obliquely reference the character (but never introduced him on screen) when S.A.B.E.R. agent Monica Rambeau enlisted an “aerospace engineer” friend to build a Hex-busting vehicle.
Reed has also been portrayed by Ioan Gruffudd (2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and Miles Teller (2015’s Fantastic Four).
Pascal, of course, currently stars in both HBO’s The Last of Us and Disney+’s The Mandalorian. It’s not yet clear how, if at all, his Fantastic Four casting will affect the production timetable of either series. The Last of Us is set to begin shooting Season 2 next month, with new episodes airing in 2025 at the earliest.
Newly-minted Emmy winner Moss-Bachrach, meanwhile, will soon begin shooting Season 3 of The Bear, while Quinn is currently in production on the final season of Stranger Things.
I think that’s the first time I’ve seen the FF’s outfits done with having a clear spacesuit influence.
That promo art definitely makes it seem like they’re going for a 1960s thing.
I really hope they aren’t doing the 1960s thing. It’s such a stupid idea. The “fish out of water” schtick lasts only one movie. And it’s already been done with Captain America, Captain Marvel, and to an extent, Starlord.
If they do go in that direction, it will severely dampen my enthusiasm for the project.
Is it wrong that my takeaway from this promo art is “They better NOT put fucking HERBIE in this movie!”?
By comparison I was like “allright, HERBIE!”
Pedro Pascal as Reed might be one of the most miscast roles in a CB movie I’ve ever seen… the rest looks good… looks like my old ass “theory” or “idea” or whatever the fuck it was might actually be a thing…

Ahh now THAT is something worht getting hyped about… funnily enough, I never watched that show, for some reason it never aired here when I was young and later on I never bothered ’cause the animations didn’t age particularly well… BUUUT I fuckin love those versions, so I’m on board to at least check it out.
Like most i have nostalgia for the theme tune, but that’s about it..I don’t remember the stories or animation being particularly impressive and worth following up on this many years later.
Yeah same here really. It feels like one of those classic comics geek things that just totally passed me by at the time, so I don’t have any real nostalgia or affection for it.
I like the designs (they cropped up in a lot of videogames I enjoyed at the time) but in terms of the cartoons I was probably too busy watching the 90s Spidey.

I know. I was thinking about bringing back Ioan Gruffud that maybe he can do Reed right with better material to work with.
But it wasn’t meant to be…
Funny with John Krazinski… Dr. Strange was in the reality where the FF, X-men, and Inhumans also existed and they all took down Thanos, but it wasn’t part of the 14M realities he said he saw.
Pedro Pascal as Reed might be one of the most miscast roles in a CB movie I’ve ever seen… the rest looks good…
I vaguely remember liking Kirby in MI:Fallout and in Hobbs & Shaw (which I saw for some reason). And I’m willing to give Pascal a shot – he’s certainly not who I’d think of, based on the roles he’s been playing up to this point, but he’s a very good actor and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the role. Basically, I’m willing to believe this isn’t just based on the hype surrounding him right now but that in the casting process, he came up with something great.
Moss-Bachrach seems like a solid choice, and Quinn like an interesting one.

Yeah, AKOM was one of the worst animation studios ever, if not the worst.
I wanted to leave this house this evening, and had already seen all of the good movies that are out, so I saw Madame Web.
Truly awful. The plot is a complete mess, and you can feel the studio mandates all over the place. Adam Scott is probably the best part of the movie, but every time they remind you that he’s Uncle Ben I felt like groaning. And the third act revolves around his sister Mary going into labor, so it happens a lot.
Dakota Johnson feels lost in the movie, and I don’t blame her. The plot feels like it was rewritten dozens of times, and what’s left makes little sense, leaving her stumbling from scene-to-scene in search of some sort of character motivation. There’s a revelation late in the movie that leads her to realise she has been wrong to hate her mother for all of her life, something I didn’t know was part of her character before that moment.
The three teens are fine, though they seem to be holding back on giving them too much characterisation, as there will be plenty of room for that in the spin-offs and sequels these characters are sure to get. Their entire part of the movie feels like a feature-length post-credits scene, and not one of the ones that gets followed up on.
I’ve liked Tahar Rahim in other things, but he’s awful as the villain here. The character makes no sense, and does literally nothing except monologue badly and attack people. Zosia Mamet gets nothing to do as his lackey.
A few things I liked:
I’ve no idea if there was ever any potential for a good movie in this idea, just that if there was it did not make it to screen.

A few things I liked:
- Always nice to see Adam Scott. I hope he got paid well.
- The 2003 setting (which is only there because of the “Mary Parker is having a baby” storyline) allows for a few fun references, and a setpiece set to Britney Spears’ Toxic.
- The annoying thirteen-year-olds sitting behind me left after half-an-hour.
I’ve no idea if there was ever any potential for a good movie in this idea, just that if there was it did not make it to screen.
Thank you for your sacrifice.
Here’s a good analysis of the movie:
My favourite part of that story is Paul trying to come up with a reasonable justification for actively choosing to see Madame Web on opening weekend.
I haven’t ever seen a movie advertising campaign that’s so honest about how awful it clearly is.
Clearly Rogue got her booty after absorbing someone else’s powers and those wore off.
Making Morph non-binary (in tandem with switching to their AOA design) is an interesting idea. Not very 1997, but I’m not sure if the show (or original series) is actually set then and it was always supposed to be progressive anyway.
Wolverine’s voice being different is surprising because it’s the same guy (though it’s entirely understandable his voice would change in ~30 years). Meanwhile Cyclops has a new VA who sounds a lot like his original.
I think the whole “Rogue had cake” thing is a Mandela effect. I’ve been watching old clips from the original series and, save for that one screenshot, she didn’t have that much of a booty.
And in further “actor wants work” news:

Three complaints I’ve been hearing about X-MEN ’97 so far:
Curious though: Is it a small or large group of complainers?
We get similar nitpicking about all superhero/scifi/fantasy discussions on social media.

Understandable but it is a bit disappointing. For all that some people didn’t like Majors (and I totally get dropping him after the legal case) I was really up for cross-time Kang stuff. But Doom could/should be fun.
At this point, Doom is pure guesswork but who else is left that they can go for?

Eh, I don’t know about spectacular, but it’s kinda cute. The Star Wars one was better.
McConaghey’s look as the Goblin is great though.
Friendlier format:

My nostalgia comes from both the CBs and the video-games of that era, all of which were using that specific look… so yeah, I might’ve missed the cartoon itself, but not every other media representation =P
Bob Iger Pushes Back on Marvel Fatigue, but Says Disney Quietly Canceled Movies – Hollywood Reporter
The Disney CEO was interviewed at a Morgan Stanley conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, where he called the Nelson Peltz-led proxy fight a “distraction” for the company.
Bob Iger is pursuing a major overhaul of the company’s film output.
In the midst of something of a strike-induced box office drought and after a challenging year for Disney’s film slate, the executive said Tuesday that “we’re doing a lot” to turn around Disney’s feature film business, which “hit on hard times that needed addressing.”
“You have to kill things you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve gotten started, you have some sunk costs, or it’s a relationship with either your employees or with the creative community,” Iger said. “It’s not an easy thing, but you got to make those tough calls. We’ve actually made those tough calls. We’ve not been that public about it, but we’ve killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough.”
Iger added that he has been “spending a lot of time with the creators, watching these films, giving detailed notes in these films, engaging in a respectful process that results in improvement.”
And he pushed back on the idea of superhero or franchise fatigue, saying that it was “not an accident” that Marvel’s first 33 films generated just under $30 billion at the box office.
“A lot of people think it’s audience fatigue, it’s not audience fatigue. They want great films. And if you build it great, they will come and there are countless examples of that. Some are ours and some are others’. Oppenheimer is a perfect example of that. Just a fantastic film,” Iger said. “Focus is really important. We reduced the output of Marvel, both number of films they make and the number of TV shows, and that really becomes critical, but I feel good about the team. I feel good about the IP we’re making. I talked about a lot of the projects. We look years ahead, really. And it’s iterative.
“Not only do you look at the films you’re making, you you look at every part of that process, who the directors are, who’s being cast, reading scripts, I personally watch films three to five times with the team and just create a culture of excellence and respect, which is really important with the creative community,” he added. “And again, the track record speaks for itself.”
On a related note, Iger also touted Disney’s 2024 film slate, calling the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes “one of the better films in the franchise,” the upcoming Inside Out and Moana sequels, and also the big Marvel release of the year, Deadpool & Wolverine, which Iger predicted “will be one of the more successful Marvel movies we’ve had in a long time.”
Willing to bet Secret Invasion destroyed anything coming out of that, Like Armor Wars.

It’s blind gossip so take this with a grain of salt:
Some lucky-he-is-not-in-jail-type activity has occurred which is why this superhero producer is no longer a part of a big project.
The fact that Disney and DeMayo are radio silent on this is speaking volumes.
The First Reactions to X-Men ’97 Herald a Glorious Return to the Mutant Age – Gizmodo
Critics have seen the first three episodes of Marvel’s X-Men: The Animated Series revival, and it seems like a good time to be an X-Fan.
Early impressions for the first three episodes of the new, 10-part series dropped last night—in the wake of the surprising news Marvel had abruptly parted ways with the series’ head writer, Beau DeMayo—and critics for the most part are high on a return to the vibes and dynamics of a generation-defining take on the X-Men. ‘97 will pick up exactly where The Animated Series left off when it came to an end in 1997, which means with the already-established team connections out the way, the show can focus on taking a swing at all the things that made the original so beloved in the first place—the big idea adaptations of legendary comics stories, the action, and of course, that soap opera mutant drama.
Check out some of the reactions to the series below, starting with yours truly (Scott Summers hive, your time is now):

Aaron Pierre exits Marvel’s Blade movie: ‘As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that’
Yes, the project evolved from being a film that is getting made to a total shit show.
I watched the first two episodes of X-Men 97 and I thought they were great. Animation is generally better than the trailer suggested and very stylish. Most of the voice cast is good (New Bishop is a bit bland compared to the original). They’re really set on making Cyclops cool and actually achieving it. And Morph is more useful to the team than I expected. They’re essentially doing a Shang Tsung to emulate other mutants with physical powers (Archangel to fly for instance), which handily doubles as walking fan service. Good stories too.
EXCLUSIVE: With the four actors set to play the iconic members of the super team, Marvel Studios‘ The Fantastic Four now has its sights set on who will play Silver Surfer, and it looks like they are going with one of the towns biggest rising stars.
Sources tell Deadline that Emmy winner Julia Garner is set to play the iconic comic book character in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four.
Marvel Studios had no comment.
While plot details for this film are unknown, sources say Garner will play Shalla-Bal, a version of Silver Surfer from the comics.
Garner’s star has been on the rise ever since she won her first of three Emmys for playing Ruth on the Netflix crime drama Ozark. She also landed an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Anna Delvey on the limited series Inventing Anna.
Since the end of Ozark, Garner has built out her film slate starting with the recently released The Royal Hotel. Next up she has the Blumhouse and Universal pic Wolfman, in which she will star opposite Christopher Abbott, and also has the Paramount thriller Apartment 7A.
Whoa! X-Men ’97 ep 5 is pretty frickin’ hardcore!
(And presumably only a warm up for eps 8-10)
“Remember It” indeed.
Yeah, it was pretty intense, though I feel like (and I don’t know what’s coming up) it’ll get undone through time travel given Cable was there.

I’m not convinced this is entirely accurate. Reading the article, it feels to me the source told them Garner has been cast as Shalla-Bal, the reporter’s had no idea who that is (fair enough), googled it and seen pics of an alt reality version that became a/the Surfer and so they’ve gone “oh, Garner is playing the Silver Surfer, Shalla Bal”.

I know. It’s not Saturday morning cartoon content anymore. I was surprised. Now I want to see it all through.
Cassandra Nova?!
Cassandra Nova?!
That’s what I was thinking. That trailer is a lot of fun. Looking forward to this.
According to Wiki that is Cassandra and she’s played by Emma Corrin, who played Diana in The Crown

So her career has included playing a woman who was murdered at a young age by a secretly-horrible guy called Charles who lived a privileged life in a fancy mansion and had a habit of manipulating the people around him to serve his own ends, and also…
…well, you can finish that joke yourselves.
That looks fuckin’ fun.
Fuck yeah, man!
…I think I need to watch this in the cinema, with beer.
For anyone into homework:
Never got into the cartoon at the time because I already knew the Claremont originals.
Now that DeMayo is gone, who will succeed him? Will the quality of the stories (which everyone likes now) go down?

As I understand it and I may be mistaken, but I think there are 20 episodes already in the can. If true and they are doing 10-episode seasons, they have time to figure it out.
Marvel Will Release No More Than Three Movies and Two Shows Per Year, Bob Iger Says
Disney CEO Bob Iger says the company is shrinking the MCU with a new mission to drop the number of Marvel TV series to two a year and the film output to no more than three movies per year.
Iger said this is part of Disney’s overall strategy to reduce output and focus on quality, a strategy “that’s particularly true with Marvel.”
“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three,” the Disney CEO said during the company’s quarterly earnings call Tuesday. “And we’re working hard on what that path is.”
Iger says Marvel has “a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more ‘Avengers,’ which we’re extremely excited about,” adding: “Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.”
Popular on Variety
The announcement is at odds with the most recent release calendar distributed by Disney, which has four films from Marvel Studios slated for 2025 — “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” “The Fantastic Four,” and “Blade” — and four more Marvel movies slated for 2026, including the fifth “Avengers” movie. Marvel is releasing a single film in 2024, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” (Historically, the only time Marvel has released more than three movies in a year was in 2021, after the studio sat out 2020 due to the pandemic: “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Eternals” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — the latter of which was a co-production with Sony Pictures.)
On the TV side, Iger says that a portion of the upcoming series, a slate that includes the Kathryn Hahn-led “WandaVision” spinoff “Agatha,” set for release are “a vestige of basically a desire in the past to increase volume.”
While Iger has previously stated plans to reduce Marvel franchise output, he’s not previously been this direct in terms of exactly how many titles Disney plans to release for both TV and film each year.
Later in the call, Iger fielded a question about Disney’s focus on sequels and originals, noting that the focus is currently more on franchise films: “We’re gonna balance sequels with originals. Specifically in animation, we had gone through a period where our original films and animation, both Disney and Pixar, were dominating. We’re now swinging back a bit to lean on sequels.”
Iger cited Disney’s plans for the next “Toy Story” movie and this summer’s release of “Inside Out 2” and said these films have an increased value because known IP costs less to market.
For Marvel, Iger pointed to new movie “Thunderbolts” coming in 2025 alongside sequels “Deadpool & Wolverine” this summer and “Captain America: Brave New World” next year. “It’ll just be a balance, which we think is is right,” Iger said.
I think they’ve had three a year quite often, but almost never four anyway? And it’s not like the two-movies-a-year years were automatically the best ones anyway. I mean, 2015 had Age of Ultron and Antman. Both of which I like fine, but they aren’t necessarily top ten Marvel movies.
I suppose what I’m saying is quality doesn’t automatically improve when you reduce the output. I’d like to hear him going on about something more than that at this point. Like hiring the right people, you know?
I think they’ve had three a year quite often, but almost never four anyway?
2021 had four, but just because of the pandemic.
They have four scheduled for next year, if you’re naive enough to believe Blade is still happening.

Spider-Man ‘Noir’ Starring Nicolas Cage Gets Amazon Series Order – Deadline
Live action and starring Cage? That’s pretty far out, isn’t it. Well, I’ll certainly be watching this.
Also, it’s produced by Stephen Lightfoot, who ran the Netflix Punisher show, so it’s definitely in good hands.
I feel like future historians will look back on Nicolas Cage’s career and wonder how much of it was real.
I wrote a thing for the official BattleTech magazine where a conspiracy theorist suggested that Nicolas Cage was immortal and roamed the galaxy as the game’s not Boba Fett, we swear character.
Word is there’s going to be a second season of Hawkeye!
Word is there’s going to be a second season of Hawkeye!
At the rate Marvel is putting out these things, it probably won’t be out for three-four years. Ironheart was filmed literally two years ago and is still probably not going to air for another 18 months.
Hawkeye was my favourite of the Disney+ shows, but I don’t think we need another season. A Young Avengers movie seems like the natural next step for those characters to me.
I’m fully expecting Ironheart to get the Echo treatment. Black Panther 2 was awful and that character was extremely unmemorable in it, so I don’t see much excitement for a spinoff series.
