Yeah a recast is straightforward and even more so when it’s someone like Kang who has multi-dimensional counterparts.

It’s a headache Marvel wouldn’t want to have to deal with, but it’s not like they don’t have options.

Caught up on Ant Man: Quantumania now. I’d give it its full title but it seems redundant given that Wasp is, at best, maybe the fifth most important character in the movie.

I guess my expectations had been lowered by the negative word of mouth but I actually wound up enjoying it more than I thought I would. However, my enjoyment was very much from a “so bad it’s good” perspective. Clunky dialogue, steaming dumps of exposition, hammy acting, cheesy attempts at humour, green screen so unrelenting even Attack of the Clones would say “hold on, now”, a story that took forever to figure out where it was going and nothing made sense at any point but overall it was so unrelentingly stupid and weird that it held my attention.

To be fair, Majors was pretty decent as Kang. Unfortunately, his scenes feel rather icky to watch at this point, especially the ones where he is berating Janet or Cassie. The whole multiverse thing affords Marvel an easy out if they go down the recasting route.

The multiverse is also one of the main factors in me not really caring much about this post-Endgame stuff. It is just too vague and incomprehensible to buy into. The first MCU films were about things like Tony Stark being humbled, learning from his mistakes and taking out the bad guy to preserve his father’s legacy, or Bruce Banner trying to find a cure for his condition so he could be with the woman he loved. Now things have been escalated to saving trillions of lives across every single universe and if one character we like happens to die then, whatever, grab another from the multiverse just like Loki. There’s nothing relatable to ground any of this in any longer. It is just green screen for storylines.

Okay, so the idea is basically that Spider-Man is now an old hand, so to speak, and Kamala is in the role of the dumb kid being mentored.

Way to go in putting this into a headline that will rile up the “fans” as much as possible. Wow. Because clearly, there’s only room for one kid in the Marvel Universe, and if that kid isn’t white and male, the fan community doesn’t have any choice but bring out the torches and pitchforks, do they?

One thing… if the MCU were smart, they would make the Thing CGI.

I ended up kind of liking the suit they used in the two Tim Story movies, but I agree that CGI is the likely route for the MCU version.

Although the last FF film wasn’t much cop, the CGI Thing looked pretty good there. I would expect something similar in the MCU.

  • #109527

I think The Thing will work just fine as practical, CGI or a mix of both…My main “worry” would be the stretching effect. It’s never looked good imo.

A lot of these delays were inevitable with the WGA strike and studios unwillingness to just pay writers fairly. Also, I’m sure Disney is happy enough to push out the Kang movies in case they have to recast. But it’s also pretty crazy to me that by the time Marvel Studios gets around to an actual X-Men movie it’ll have been nearly a decade, if not more, since their Fox purchase.

Disney’s CEO Just Admitted That You’re Right About the Quality of MCU Films – Collider

In a rare turn, Iger seems to acknowledge that Disney+ and its demands have negatively impacted the brand’s content.

Iger signed a contract which will see him lead the Walt Disney Company for a further two years, through 2026. Part of Iger’s remit is going to involve turning around what is rapidly coming a sinking creative ship when it comes to the issue of Disney+ and the negative effects felt due to the company overstretching itself while trying to generate content for its streaming service.

Iger admitted that the company would be slowing down when it comes to making movies and TV series for its Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm franchises, coming at a time when the company seeks to cut costs when a wide slate of releases have massively underperformed at the worldwide box office.

No, they have a load of stuff banked: Echo is out in November (all at once), and Agatha and Ironheart are both finished. Daredevil and Wonder Man were in the middle of filming.

The main gist seems to be an underperforming Ant man movie.
Were the previous 2 any good? Not really.

The mistake was thinking they could make Iron Man 3 after ant-man 1 and 2

  • #111469

I think the general response to MCU movies has been pretty lukewarm for a while now. Outside of occasional big successes like No Way Home I think that both financially and critically Marvel has been in a bit of a rut since the covid interruption.

The movies have mostly been average-to-poor, the TV shows have mostly failed to impress despite the early hype (and in some ways have complicated the overall picture unnecessarily for casual audiences), and then they’ve had additional problems outside their control like the Jonathan Majors scandal.

To me it feels like a mixture of we-can-do-no-wrong overconfidence in the wake of Endgame, a lack of direction (that’s been compounded by weak writing and moving away from tried and tested comics ideas into more original territory that often hasn’t worked) and simply pumping out too much material and spreading the quality too thin.

I think a rest or a break or a reboot would help Marvel to regroup and come back in a more measured fashion with movies that feel like an event again. It’s difficult to capture that feeling when every week seems to bring a new instalment of (mostly pretty weak) new MCU content.

If Secret Wars turns out to be a big cosmic reset storyline, as rumoured, then it might not be the worst thing in the world as it could offer a chance to fix some of their mistakes and clear the decks a bit.

Yeah, I always thought it was funny that Disney was dumb enough to think they could make a huge hit out of Ant-Man 3. The first 2 movies were fluffy and forgettable and Disney somehow thought adding in a villain who made a brief appearance in a Loki tv show would somehow be enough to boost the third movie’s box office. If they really wanted Ant-Man 3 to be a hit, they needed to change its name to Spider-Man.

  • #111473

I think audiences have gotten used to superhero movies now and expect more from them at this point.

When the MCU first debuted, there was nothing like it before. Its newness was a huge draw. We were finally getting “superheroes done right”. Hell, they were able to turn Guardians of the Galaxy, a book, into a globally recognized franchise. Unfortunately, they are now struggling creatively as people are used to the formula and want something different.

We also had actors come in who became synonymous with their roles. Now though, they’ve lost most of the big names who created that initial success. And let’s be honest, Robert Downey Jr was a huge part of the success of the MCU franchise. It also is harder with live action as actors get older and staying in “superhero shape” becomes more of a challenge. They also want to do something different after awhile. Hemsworth is still around but I’m not sure how much longer.

Due to the dubious quality of most of the recent movies, audiences are not connecting with the MCU. The Marvel brand used to have a “stamp of quality” that is no longer there. They rushed too much product out for movie and streaming objectives. As is the nature of business, something worked so they keep doing it until it doesn’t work anymore without understanding why it worked and not making course corrections along the way.

To me, it feels like Marvel took its audience for granted. Endgame was a great jumping off point for people. They didn’t give people a good reason not to bail.

  • #111475

I don’t think there’s any need for a reboot, but yeah, they do need to slow down. Take a deep breath, push back the not-so-important stuff that’s in development and focus on really making the next movies and shows that are coming out the best they can be.

Oh, and fire everybody involved with producing, writing or directing Secret Invasion. That’d be good.

  • #111476

Hell, they were able to turn Guardians of the Galaxy, a book, into a globally recognized franchise. Unfortunately, they are now struggling creatively as people are used to the formula and want something different.

I agree with the first part of this paragraph, but have two comments regarding the rest of it:

    1. Judging from many of the complaints I’ve read here and from other sources, I’m not convinced that fans “want something different.” When the various Disney+ series presented different formats and tones, such as MS. MARVEL’s ethnic teen girl POV or the “break the fourth wall” comedy focus of SHE-HULK, there were endless complaints that (or so it seems to me) basically came down to “it’s not what I expect from the MCU!”

    2. It’s important to remember that the “superheroes done right” new formula worked for over 10 years and three Phases. The problem now isn’t so much being used to the formula, as it is tossing aside what made that formula work and just churning out poorly-written, poorly-directed product that sacrifice the attention to detail and the “human scale” that made us love most of the earlier films.

I think what makes GOTG3 work, compared to The Eternals, Dr. Strange 2, or Ant-Man 3, is that instead of having to save the planet or the univers or the multi-verse, the Guardians were just trying to save their teammate. The MCU needs to focus more on those personal stories than on the NEXT BIG THREAT.

The MCU needs to focus more on those personal stories than on the NEXT BIG THREAT.

I don’t even think that personal story and Big Threat is a contradiction (look at GotG 1 as a good example of a movie doing both, or at Ant-Man 3 as an example where they tried to do the personal and messed up badly). Like you said, the output just has not been written and directed well enough. That’s really all there is to it. (It’s a shame that Whedon has removed himself from the picture for like forever – he was really good at interweaving the personal and the big threat.)

And yes, maybe there is an element of it all getting too familiar. Or at least, I do think the audience cut the earlier movies a lot of slack because it was still the first time a studio had really figured out how to do a superhero universe on the big screen. I don’t think there’s such a big difference between the first Dr. Strange and Captain Marvel. Shang-Chi was a better movie than the second Iron Man or Thor 2.

But there is also no denying that there have been some real missteps lately though – Eternals, though not as much as Wakanda Forever and Quantumania – and on the other hand they haven’t had a really big, beloved movie in a while (GotG3’s box office is fine, but it’s not Avengers money). They need to make sure they deliver a few of those soon, or things really will start to turn sour. I think they still know how to do that, they just need to take more time and make sure the quality of the writing and production is there.

  • #111478

One of the things that separates Phases 1-3 and Phase 4 onwards is a clear structure.

When it was just films, each one moved the plot along a bit, so the order was clear. Phase 4 onwards went with chronology going in all directions and then threw TV series into the mix.  I’m sure someone has worked it all out but I haven’t and don’t intend to.

When it was just films, each one moved the plot along a bit, so the order was clear. Phase 4 onwards went with chronology going in all directions and then threw TV series into the mix.  I’m sure someone has worked it all out but I haven’t and don’t intend to.

With the Infinity Saga, each movie pretty much stood on its own with cameos and crossovers that showed it was a shared universe. The Thanos-related bits were more easter egg in nature or stingers at the end. GotG Vol. 1 was the most overt Thanos appearance prior to Infinity War and Endgame.

They seem to have a plan with Kang as the big bad this time. It seems this time, they are being more overt with the plan. Hell, when they announce Phases 4-6, they laid those cards on the table right then and there. And when they did, you saw the characters involved and the crowd went… mild. To be honest, there wasn’t a lot to get super excited about. It all looked B-squad, at best.

I know I’ve said it before but I truly think this is a huge factor: the completion of the Infinity Saga with Endgame (technically Phase 3 ended with Spider-Man: Far From Home) was a jumping off point for a lot of people. There are 23 movies in Phases 1-3. I can see people saying they need a break and/or are ready to move onto something else. Then next thing you now, the Multiverse Saga is announced! There are 17 movies in this one, but you also have several television series that are part of it as well! That is a fucking lot! Doing it once is one thing, but again may have been a bit much so soon after the last saga.

As comics readers/fans, especially Marvel fans, we are uniquely attuned to multi-part company-wide crossover events that unfold over 3 or 4 months, followed one season later by another multi-part company-wide crossover event…and so on, and so on… But actual comics fans are a small fraction of the overall audience that these films need in order to be successful and make money for the studio. Marvel/Disney needs to focus their attention on that larger audience, even as they introduce “new” heroes who aren’t household names to the majority of the movie-going population. Introducing She-Hulk on television with a Bruce Banner tie-in makes sense; introducing a half-dozen Eternals in a poorly-conceived film by a talented director who probably had no idea what she was dealing with…not so much.

That aspect you bring up Todd: First time around it is cool, second time is less so. Marvel seem blind to this.

Then there’s what Jerry mentions – the comics event swirl that has, in most cases, bored a good few of us. Do I like comics as a medium? Yes, corporate superheroes? Not so much.

I think it’s also showing up how much material they burnt through across those 20-odd films.  There’ll always be more but how much of it is good? That’s a question with a very variable answer.
