I doubt that it took a truck.

I would hope he’s happy he’s getting another shot at a career with the new Spidey boost.

    The Kang actor Jonathan Majors:

Reminds me this guy in the last Guardians movie. In his contract, he had to workout and what he went through to
be so jacked he said he wouldn’t recommend it for anybody.

Funny… I used to say to be in reasonable shape for dating. But it turns out that most people will just look at you
and be impressed for a few seconds,  and just move on to whatever they are doing. 🤣

These Spidey extended universe characters have always felt like a hard sell for me. Maybe Black Cat you could do something with, but not sure about the rest.

I remember, but I’m talking about a live-action movie… Also, with Hobie Brown, not Miles’ uncle, although I guess they could use both and Hobie finds the uncle’s suit or something… could be a good way to bridge it into a Miles movie.

  • #103401

A Miles live-action movie has to happen sooner or later. He’s becoming very well known outside of comics in various media, and for a lot of kids (including my son) he’s their favourite version of Spidey. He’s the modern update that Spider-Man needs.

So yeah, I feel like a Miles movie would do great business and the Prowler would be a natural villain choice. But I guess they probably want to wait until the Spider-Verse animated movies are done first.

  • #103403

Risk currently for live action Miles is what will it do that comics, animation and games haven’t?  Might need to let the other versions reduce in profile first.

Could be a while with both two Spider-Verse films and Spider-Men 2 inbound to PS5.

  • #103405

I’m not sure that’s a problem, the Spider-Man live action movies have done well even among a sea of other Spidey content in comics, cartoons, videogames etc.

If anything I think the presence of Miles in other media only raises awareness of the character and makes it more likely that big audiences would turn out to see his movie.

  • #103430

Silk is a bit of an odd choice, but that’s Sony’s MO. Spider-Girl or Spider-Gwen seem like they’d be a bit more interesting. But you never know.

yeah, it was a lot of fun – I laughed a lot – but I think it lost almost all steam after Mantis and Drax caught Kevin Bacon, the only joke that really got me in the back half was the recurring one about everyone hating actors. Totally worth it for Cosmo though.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… I’m not sure about Cosmo having a young female voice… the russian accent didn’t really come through that much either (until the post credit bit where it sounded too forced u_u)… but goddamn, if that dog is CGI, holy shit it was good CGI. Kinda crazy that they haven’t used Cosmo yet, he should’ve been used much earlier… and I really hope they feature him a lot of GotG3, and that they let his powers loose too… he’s kinda the most powerful of the bunch at this point.

Also, wow did they make Groot look like Vin Disel… eeew this groot looks horrible xD

Other than that, bleh, too cringy for me although it had its fun moments I guess… and even though I’m not cool with making everyone a joke, at least Pom Klementief finally had something more to do and she did a great job all things considered… I’ve been over Drax for a while tho.

    So yeah, that happened…

So that Guardians special was… well, some people like it.

I’m getting to the point of wishing that someone could snap their fingers and restart Phase 4. It is dragging as well – feels like a lifetime ago when Black Widow was released.

To rank the entries in Phase 4 so far:

    Enjoyable, Yet Flawed:

    1/ Hawkeye

    2/ WandaVision

    3/ She-Hulk

    4/ Loki

    Average:

    5/ Black Widow

    6/ Shang-Chi

    7/ Falcon & Winter Soldier

    Underwhelming:

    8/ No Way Home

    9/ Love & Thunder

    10/ Multiverse of Madness

    11/ Guardians Holiday Special

Bad And Not So Bad It Is Actually Good But Actually Just Bad:

    12/ Eternals

    Not Seen:

Moon Knight – saw some of it but wound up literally falling asleep four times when trying to continue watching

    Ms Marvel

    Werewolf By Night

    What If

Wakanda Forever – will actually aim to watch this one when it turns up on Disney+

  • #103713

Ms Marvel, No Way Home, Multiverse and all but the last ep of Hawkguy are the only ones I enjoyed. I think I’m burnt out on capes to be honest.

  • #103716

When it comes to the movies, I’d rank them

    Properly Good:
    Shang Chi

    Enjoyed but Flawed:
    No Way Home
    Black Widow
    Multiverse of Madness
    Love & Thunder

    Underwhelming:
    Eternals

Haven’t seen Wakanda Forever yet, and I’m hoping Antman 3 will properly deliver. But yes, it’s been a bit lukewarm up to here.

  • #103725

I’m getting to the point of wishing that someone could snap their fingers and restart Phase 4.

I mean, it’s over now, so at least there’s that…

Kinda crazy that the best thing about this so called phase 4 was Wandavision… I’d say that for me, nothing was truly great, the best things were “flawed but enjoyable”, and only down from there… so let’s see:

    Flawed but enyojable:
    -Wandavision
    -Loki
    -Hawkeye
    -F&WS

    Whatever, just bleh:
    -Black Widow
    -No Way Home
    -Werewolf
    -What If

Disapointing but tolerable-ish… mostly bad though:
    -Shang Chi
    -Doc Strange 2
    -Eternals
    -GOTG X-Mas spcial

    Flat out shit:
    -She Hulk
    -Moon Knight
    -Love & Thunder
And for wasting great actors and performances: shaaaaaame!!!!

Didn’t watch Miss Marvel ’cause zzzzzzzzz and haven’t seen BP2… don’t expect much from it though.

So yeah, this “Phase 4” was fuckin bad overall… Hawkeye and F&WS being in my top picks is very telling, but at least those had some good stuff going on for them… the rest wast just generic, bland, disapointing or just bad.

It is interesting that the MCU remains as popular as it is despite the past few years being so middling in terms of quality. I suppose it shows what a good job they did establishing the Marvel brand as something important in pop-culture terms in the long build to Endgame. Hard to see anything slated for Phase 5 that can break the malaise (look everyone, Echo!) but here’s hoping for some pleasant surprises in terms of quality.

  • #103727

It’s telling that all the Phase 4 ranking lists have different things in different places with not a huge amount of consensus over the best and worst (or even generally good and bad) movies and TV shows.

That to me suggests that Marvel are probably managing the MCU pretty well in terms of appealing to different sectors of their audience with slightly different tones and approaches.

Everyone at least seems to still be finding some stuff to like, even if they don’t love everything.

3 users thanked author for this post.
  • #103728

(Don’t get me wrong, I think most post-Endgame stuff has been fairly mediocre to poor – with only a few bright spots like No Way Home and What If?, and to a lesser extent Dr Strange 2 and Shang-Chi – but they’re obviously still keeping audiences interested across the board even as the MCU becomes incredibly sprawling and the quality gets diluted.)

The tone of the trailer for the GOTG Holiday Special reminded me (in a good way) of Gunn’s PEACEMAKER series, so I knew what to expect and thoroughly enjoyed the new Special. It was funny and touching, and stayed true to the spirit of the main characters that we’ve seen in previous films; and, as with GOTG1 and 2, the soundtrack played an important role. And best of all, it was only 41 minutes long, so no time to get too boring or shlocky.

Marvel comics used to have an occasional issue where the characters got involved in a humorous situation that was out-ot-the-ordinary but still part of canon. Thus I do not have a problem with the spirit of the Special, and accept it as part of the Phase 4 expansion of new characters and formats and genres within the MCU.

AND THEY GOT KEVIN BACON TO APPEAR!!!

Yeah, I’ve said this before, but I think Phase 4 was mostly about expanding their universe with some more low-key characters and also served as a bit of a breather before going all out again. (Thought that’ll only happen Phase 6 really, won’t it?)

  • #103811

Looks like. I think it’s more likely Drax will be the one who dies, simply because Dave Batista is, more or less, done with the character.

  • #103813

Sticking him in a shirt in the Holiday Special was telling. Likely he wants to embrace Dad-bod rather than Drax-bod at this stage.

So that Guardians special was… well, some people like it.

I have now seen the Christmas Special, and I think you have to be a total Scrooge not to like this. It’s just a silly, sentimental fun Christmas thing and as such it worked perfectly for me. Drax and Mantis on Earth was a lot of fun, I loved Kevin Bacon and the Yondu framing story.

I also thought the trailer was fucking awesome. Just happy to see them doing a proper story again with a lot of characters and multiple places to go – Guardians 2 was just too much of a chamber play for this franchise.

So, the High Evolutionary is the Big Bad, yeah? And there’s Adam Warlock. But who’s the girl running in the thing with whatshisname?

Kinda stupid that they got Kevin Bacon and he just… sang a song?? Like… wow, that was anticlimatic to say the least =/

But who’s the girl running in the thing with whatshisname?

I’m assuming a random experiment woman running on a threadmill.

The High Evolutionary is all about creating animal-human hybrids, so I’m guessing it’s just a “funny reverse hamster experiment”. I do wonder if they’ll go with counter-earth, which has always been kind of a stupid concept, or if it’s just gonna be a section in his ship or simply another planet altogether… looks like it’ll be a full planet, but who knows… counter-Earth would be pretty comics accurate to Warlock’s origin tho…

  • #103867

IT WAS A CHRISTMAS SONG IN A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, YOU FUCKING SCROOGE!!!!!!!!

Also, he also did some acting. Because he’s, like, an actor. What else did you expect him to do? Play the six degrees game?

More seriously though, that’s something I forgot to mention: I loved the soundtrack of the special. Nice to see Gunn staying true to having music be so important to his Guardians stuff.

As tradition would have it, director James Gunn released an all-new mixtape across digital streaming platforms marking the Nov. 25 premiere of “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” on Disney+.

Set to an assortment of Christmas tunes hand-selected by Gunn, the holiday special follows Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) on a quest to kidnap actor Kevin Bacon from Earth and bring him back to Peter (Chris Pratt) as a Christmas gift.

The corresponding playlist — titled “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Awesome Mix” — consists of 11 tracks, which are a mixture of needle drops and original songs used in the one-off. Gunn enlisted the help of Rhett Miller, frontman of the Old 97’s, to write the special’s comedic opening number, “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here).”

    […]

The Smashing Pumpkins, Low and the Wombats are among other artists hand-picked by Gunn for the original soundtrack. Hollywood Records also released a 74-track version of the mixtape, which includes cues from the score and additional needle drops from past films in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.

Below is a full list of the tracks included in the “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Awesome Mix.”

“I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime is Here)” — Old 97’s
“Dead by X-Mas” — Hanoi Rocks
    “Christmas Treat” — Julian Casablancas
    “Mrs. Claus” — Little Jackie
    “Just Like Christmas” — Low
    “Christmastime” — The Smashing Pumpkins
“Fairytale of New York” — The Pogues, Kirsty MacColl
    “Christmas Wrapping” — The Waitresses
“Is This Christmas?” — The Wombats
“I Want an Alien for Christmas” — Fountains of Wayne
“Here It Is Christmas Time” — Kevin Bacon, Old 97’s

So there’s your serious answer to the Kevin Bacon singing a song thing: It’s all about the music really.

So I think you might be right that they missed a bit of an opportunity for a joke there. Drax and Mantis should probably have gone to get Kevin Bacon so he could save Christmas via dancing. Then have a scene where they force him to dance. He’s terrible at it. That’s when they realize he’s just an actor. Everything else plays out just the same.

The Murray stuff mostly didn’t come out until after he filmed the movie.

Going by the trailer (and the previous films), Lilly probably won’t have much to do in Quantumania anyway, especially for a title character. I think she has one line in the trailer.

trange World was one month though, so I think it depends on if it’s making money in cinemas.

    Sure, no disagreement.

I think in truth the MCU or Avatar type films are truly the ones that make a huge amount of money in cinemas, not easily replicated by streaming revenue. Strange World was a horrible flop so who cares? A film like ‘Banshees’ is never huge box office, a couple of weeks and it will have done most of what it ever will for the dedicated fans.

Even in the distant past cinemas have basically relied on a handful of films a year to keep them afloat. I remember my friend Alex saying that in 1987 Fatal Attraction alone kept him in business. I tried to take a photo of it but the glare was bad my local multiplex with 8 screens had 7 dedicated to Wakanda Forever and 1 showing Black Adam alternating with a local horror film.

It will not be one size fits all as it may have been in the past where they had negotiated 90 or 60 day windows but big movies that can sustain ticket sales for many weeks will be held back because the revenue there is just bigger.

Well, there’s a reason he isn’t called The Cuddler.

Is the Cuddler any relation to the Snuggler?

It’s awesome how much they’re leaning into this. Very cool that Bernthal really gets to do his thing again.

  • #104711

Yup. I mean the casting was generally very good in the Netflix Marvel shows. The pacing was the biggest issue, if they make sure there’s enough story for all the hours planned I’m all in.

  • #104722

Well, they all had different issues. Pacing was a big issue for Alias because the plot just got very repetitive. On rewatching, Daredevil season 1 has a very slow pacing (we see the Kingpin for the first time in ep 3), but it works brilliantly. Cage was just shit writing overall – dialogue being a much bigger issue here than pacing – and Iron Fist was too fucking weird. Punisher didn’t have any issues at all, it just worked perfectly.

But yes, the casting was very good overall. They should at least bring back Mike Colter, too. He was fantastic.

  • #104733

I would like them to bring back Jessica Henwick from Iron Fist. But only her. The rest of that show can be ignored.

Apparently she was invited back for an appearance in Iron Fist but declined to do M4trix instead.

  • #104740

Understandably. But yeah, Henwick was good. It’d be nice to see her Colleen Wing back at some point.

Well, Finn Jones would be crazy to say anything but “Yeah, I’d love to play Danny Rand again if I had the chance!”
But Marvel won’t touch that one, I’m sure.

The Cavill stans won’t be happy until he’s cast as every bloody superhero…Let’s whip out the shoe polish and get ready for Black Panther 3.

Non-Marvel Marvel movie: I gave in and watched New Mutants.

And wow, as expected this was really bad. To the extent that you really have to wonder where that 80 million dollar budget went. I mean, sure there were some CGI effects there, but everything else looked so cheap and was so badly done… everything looked kinda bad and cheap, the script was crap (predictable plot, lame dialogue, lots of really dumb things) and some of the performances were terrible (mainly the kid playing Dani was terrible, but Alica Braga was also pretty bad. Anya Taylor-Joy was… not there yet. Maisie Williams was okay-ish and Charlie Heaton was pretty good).
Some of it was fun in a B-movie kind of way at least, and I liked the Smiling Men. It was fun enough to watch, especially expecting it to be bad going in and then just chatting about everything bad about it. It wasn’t a bad night. But man… it’s really weird that the director, Josh Boone, is also the guy who made The Fault in Our Stars, which was a perfectly fine adaptation of the novel. I have no idea what went wrong that made this movie so incompetently clobbered together. So weird.

  • #104906

Yeah, Josh Boone has been a pretty big disappointment since The Fault in Our Stars. He’s also responsible for the pretty horrible Paramount+ adaptation of The Stand. That series was an absolute train wreck from start to finish. Just a weirdly structured and paced mess.

  • #104907

Seems like it’d be a good idea for him to stick to either directing or writing scripts, but not attempt to do be an auteur (as New Mutants was originally also his screenplay). Or maybe the problem with NM was studio interference and that they kept bringing in new writers to force him to change direction, and they should’ve just let him do his thing. I’d really like to see his original script (to see whether it’d have been any better than what we got in the end).

Looks like it’s going to be a blast. I’m really looking forward to this – it’s been a while since I really had fun with a Marvel movie (probably Shang Chi… Spider-Man was okay, but it was a pure nostalgia trip, and I liked Strange 2, but that one felt more like a Raimi B-movie than a Marvel one). So, yeah, totally in for this one.

  • #105073

Yeah, I think it looks pretty good, with some nicely weird visuals. It’s the first MCU trailer in a while that has me interested to see something.

  • #105082

Looks decent, but looks can be deceiving… the trailer’s giving me some Love and Thunder vibes.

  • #105084

For a movie in which she’s a title character, it does not seem like The Wasp gets anything to do in this movie.

If you didn’t know, you’d definitely think Hank and Janet were Scott’s parents.

It does look that way, although she has a brief bit of action at the end just about everyone else gets more screen time in that trailer.

Marvel trailers can be like that though. Focusing on a particular angle which seems here the deal Scott does with Kang. She could have a decent subplot of her own, we shall see.

I always think of the Iron Man 3 one which looked really grim with Tony’s life collapsing around him, stranded nowhere with his armour broken. In the end the film wasn’t really centred around that and was much lighter in tone.

I rewatched Logan with the kid this weekend, and it’s still a fucking great movie. Kid loved it.

I’d forgotten that who who plays the Corinthian was in it.
