The Newsarama link is usable, at least on my computer:
This seems to be a core part of Newsarama’s strategy over the past couple of years.
Surprised to see a new Uncanny X-Men Masterworks, covering material from the Mutant Massacre. I was sure that they would wrap up that series at #209, given that the rest of it is already out in OHC/ Omnibus format. On the positive side though, as the Omnibus volumes typically ship a few months behind the latest Masterworks hardcover, this looks good for Vol 5 early in 2022.

A lot of the appeal of the Masterworks is in the remastering and recolouring of the artwork to best match/reproduce the original comics.
Material put into OHC/Omnibus format doesn’t always – or even often – get that level of care in the restoration. So there’s a significant fanbase that’s waiting for stuff to come out in Masterworks even if it’s already available in other formats already.
It’s why I’m considering buying the latest Daredevil Masterworks – they’ve finally hit the Frank Miller era, and even though I have that material already (multiple times, in some cases) I’m tempted to get this version too as the reproduction and colours look like a significant improvement over the previous editions (particularly restoring the red colour of Daredevil from the slightly orangey tone of the modern reprints).
Does anyone read Vita Ayala? she is currently writing New Mutants and I am contemplating throwing her in the same pile as King and Bendis(despised writers) but I don’t know that much about her. Her idea to kill Gabby really irritates me. It’s been a month and nothing has happened. Someone wrote a piece last month that I agreed with

anyone who attacks Wolverine’s extended family is going to regret it.
but Logan is investigating the arson on the Marauder and Laura is living it up in the Big City(NYC). WTF.
I really hope that Inferno does burn the quiet council down. because it needs to be replaced. the Mutant Villains are back to the old tricks, Mags is now on trial. Storm is on Mars, Scott and Jean are in New York and Kurt is on a hypersecret mission for Xavier. I have said multiple times I like happy endings and superheroes. I do not want to read a story where the bad guys are winning. Hickman may not be slow about getting books out but he is slow getting to the point. House of X was almost 2 years ago. Over the weekend, I watched the X men panel at Comic con @home. Duggan and Percy were ok. but they just talked about their own books. the editor said Inferno is coming but without Hickman it is pretty useless in trying to get a feel for the big picture. I guess that panel’s failure sorta stirred up my dissatisfaction with the X Men books.
This looks like the most interesting Defenders in a long long time…

I put a pile of somewhat tatty, but not bad for 45 years old, UK Captain Britain comics on Ebay yesterday, thinking, 30 quid would be nice.
Little bidding action but 5 people have messaged me so far about buy-it-now prices – “I don’t like auctions”, one offering 150 quid.

Huh, hadn’t heard Zdarsky was wrapping up Daredevil – hopefully they’ll do a 3-trades final OHC for it.
His newsletter said the series / numbering was ending but he was still writing daredevil
The Daredevil title is on pause after our giant-sized issue 36 because the events in that book kind of, uh, spiraled out of control? And Marco and I need to deal with it before we can jump back onto the Daredevil title. Will that be issue #37? Or an all-new issue #1? I can honestly say I have no idea. All I can say is that we’re continuing and have more story to tell after issue 36, especially leading to our big issue 38, which is Legacy Numbering issue 650!
https://zdarsky.substack.com/p/the-daredevil-you-know
his newsletters are fun, I’d almost pay for them.
I know most people will be pretty excited by the Jason Aaron Thor Omnibus (Vol 1), but I’m far more interested by the Matt Fraction Omnibus instead. I know I’m in the minority on this, but I really liked Matt’s run. It was a worthy (pun very much intended) successor to JMS’ run with Coipel, and the spirit of Simonson’s too. I’ll be picking this up, if I can (pun, somewhat, intended this time).
Novelist Walter Mosley makes his Marvel Comics debut with The Thing
Sounds Like the Marvel Comics Universe Is Going to Have a Rough Winter
The Marvel Comics Universe is about to be changed forever. Actually, it seems like it’s about to be changed forever on multiple occasions between December of this year and February 2022, as the publisher has announced eight new “tentpole” series, at least half of which sound like mega-events. Curious? Here’s the rundown, right from Marvel.
Devil’s Reign
“All hell breaks loose in the Marvel Universe as the Kingpin finally declares all-out war on the heroes in Devil’s Reign! Having set the stage in their Eisner-nominated Daredevil epic, Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s far-reaching crossover event finds Mayor Fisk outlawing all Super Heroes in New York and unleashing intel on all their dark secrets, while pitting Daredevil, Elektra, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and many more against his Thunderbolt agents. But in the end… Who Will Reign?”Avengers Forever
“Marvel Comics’ Avengers Forever pulls together archeologist Tony Stark aka the Invincible Ant-Man and Avengers from across the multiverse to bring order to timelines where ‘hope’ is a four-letter word. Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder present an all-new series that will redefine the Avengers as… the Multiverse’s Mightiest Heroes.”Timeless
“The future of the Marvel Universe is here, and Timeless is where it all begins. When a threatening new timeline emerges, Kang the Conqueror must fight his way through the coming year to protect the main 616 timeline he’s worked centuries to solidify as his own. Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Joe Bennett, Mark Bagley and more provide a first look at what’s coming to the Marvel Universe in 2022 in a story that will prove… the Future is Timeless.”X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine
House of X and Powers of X ushered in the First Krakoan Age of the X-Men. Now, Marvel Comics’ X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will test ‘the best there is at what he does’ before any mutant can survive to the Second Krakoan Age. Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara and Federico Vicentini tell two interlocked tales about what happens to Wolverine when… His Pasts Meet His Future.”She-Hulk
“Marvel Comics’ She-Hulk, from Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio, throws the book at Jennifer Walters as she tries to put her rage-filled days behind her and return to practicing law in defense of the innocent. But when a friend from her past comes knocking with a mystery she can’t resist, She-Hulk gets… Back To Bashing.”Fantastic Four: Reckoning War
“Dan Slott is joined by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott for Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four: Reckoning War, an epic saga over 15 years in the making. The original secret war of the Marvel Universe has been reignited and every living being in reality is in danger, for we are finally at… Our Day Of Reckoning.”Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
“Lunella Lafayette and her lovable 20-foot dinosaur are BACK in Marvel Comics’ Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. But what shape will their partnership take in this exciting new era? Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for more news about the next adventure of the biggest brain in the world that will send dino-sized shockwaves throughout the Marvel Universe. In 2022, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will bring new meaning to the term “Marvel Team-Up” in a tale that promises to… Shake Your World.”She-Hulk and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur seem like pretty straightforward, stand-alone series; nothing about Wolverine is ever straightforward, so there’s no telling how impactful his two titles will be. But Devil’s Reign is going to affect all the heroes who live in New York City, which is like 98 percent of all of Marvel’s characters, so that’s a big deal. Then Fantastic Four: Reckoning War is going to put reality in danger, and Timeless is going to put the future in danger, and clearly many parts of the multiverse are in danger in Avengers Forever. That’s a lot of danger!
It’s very strange to me that Devil’s Reign is actually called “A Marvel Event” while the Timeless logo has the giant real estate in the promo pic, which usually denotes the biggest event. But based on the description, Reckoning War has the highest possible stakes out of all of these titles, which are usually reserved for mega-events. So I guess they’re all three big-time event comics? Over the course of three months? Sounds exhausting to read about, let alone be forced to experience. But you’ll be able to do so later this year, when Devil’s Reign kicks off this run of event series and new titles from December.
I don’t know, it seems a bit nebulous right now to say how much these are ‘events’ even if they are seemingly sold that way in the solicit. Devil’s Reign sounds most like one because of the way it affects an array of characters.
They all sound like epic storylines but even back in the day the X-Men Brood Saga was happening the same time as the FF were fighting off Galactus invading the Earth, that’s pretty basic comics DNA for a lot of epic all the time.
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. All stories should have some kind of hook to get your interest and there’s nothing wrong with having several exciting epics all running at the same time. In fact I’d say that’s exactly what you want if you’re a superhero comics publisher.
It’s all about how they’re handled. If all of these stories were treated the same way as big crossover events (numerous tie-ins, derailing stories in other books etc.) then I could see it becoming a mess to do all of them at once, but I doubt they will be.
Avengers Forever “Marvel Comics’ Avengers Forever pulls together archeologist Tony Stark aka the Invincible Ant-Man and Avengers from across the multiverse to bring order to timelines where ‘hope’ is a four-letter word. Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder present an all-new series that will redefine the Avengers as… the Multiverse’s Mightiest Heroes.”
I wish they’d stop reusing the names of older stories/events for new, unrelated ones. I presume there’s some sort of trademark renewal element to it, but how does calling this Avengers Forever help anyone?

I thought the same thing.
At least Devil’s Reign is not called Dark Reign
Fantastic Four #1 shouldn’t have happened. It was a mistake.
Now I’ve got your attention, I’ll explain
In 1961, Marvel publisher Martin Goodman went to Stan Lee and said, look at this Justice League of America comic the competition is putting out, it’s beating our sales by miles. So go out and make me a comic like Justice League of America.
Lee went to Kirby (as you obviously would, if you had a Jack Kirby) and said, Goodman wants us to write something with superheroes, go and create something.
Kirby had a bunch of story ideas left over from when he had created Challengers of the Unknown for DC a few years earlier, so decided to create Marvel a team that was basically the Challengers, but with super powers.
Note, this was nothing like what Goodman has asked for.
What Lee and Kirby should have done is take a bunch of Marvel’s old Golden Age properties and put new versions of them together in a team. Because that’s basically what the JLA was, after all. That’s what Goodman was probably expecting.
Maybe they could have called this team “The Avengers”. It would certainly have had Captain America, Human Torch and Namor in it. Who else? Maybe Miss America and the Whizzer?
It would have been a sure-fire hit, because Lee and Kirby, and Marvel would still have dominated the super-hero market. Only with no Fantastic Four.
That’s what should have happened.

The writers of the 90s animated Spider-Man series must have had similar thoughts to you as they came up with this:
https://marvelanimated.fandom.com/wiki/Six_American_Warriors
According to that page, it looks like they were set in WW2 so that’s nothing really new (i.e. it’s the the Invaders, so why didn’t they just call them the Invaders?).
What I’m imagining is a team set in 1961, i.e. the Avengers but with golden-age characters.
If all of these stories were treated the same way as big crossover events (numerous tie-ins, derailing stories in other books etc.) then I could see it becoming a mess to do all of them at once, but I doubt they will be.
To be fair comics get whacked for this but I don’t think they are that bad nowadays. X of Swords was a very typical 90s style X-Men crossover where you did need to read each chapter across several books but not that much else is.
I’ve been reading Immortal Hulk and Daredevil on Unlimited and they stand alone fine for several years now into their runs, there may be some loose links to some wider events but nothing essential at all, you can just read those single books.
Like I say we can get a bit rose tinted on these things too, references have always been there. I have been doing an 80s X-Men re-read and in the middle of a Paul Smith era issue we have Lilandra chastising Reed and Sue for saving Galactus’ life, all of which happened in Fantastic Four. They are constantly using footnotes, when Sabretooth enters the X-Men comics it is several years after he was an Iron Fist bad guy, we don’t actually know anything about him from just reading X-Men. They refer to Rogue having a long battle with Dazzler, where you have to read Dazzler’s title to fully know about it or just accept from the footnote that happened and carry on. I mean the entire Rogue and Ms Marvel thing all happens in an Avengers annual even though it is key to many X-Men stories for years to come.
A lot now still works on the same basis that they tell you what’s happening and it’s up to you to delve deeper or just take the basics of it.

Wow. That was… something.
If you’ve been a reader of Marvel comics for the last 20 years, why does any of this come as a shock to you?
The weird thing about this is that Sins Past came out in June 2004, close to twenty years ago. Some of the people reading ASM now weren’t even born when it happened. Why drag this all up again now?
I think it’s a writing cycle thing. The writers handling the book today were the fans reading it when Sins Past happened, and from a fan perspective they want to right those wrongs. I wouldn’t be surprised if One More Day gets overturned soon too.
It reminds me a little of Green Lantern under Geoff Johns. So much of that was about rehabilitating Hal Jordan and clearing up his messy past continuity and exonerating him for all his misdeeds, and I really didn’t care about any of that, but Johns obviously really did.

I will admit to never having been a regular Spiderman reader, but, holy shit, does that actually make sense to anyone?
It’s retconning a retcon.
That Sin’s Past nonsense should never have got pat editorial in the first place so I’m not surprised it’s being written out but dang that’s a convoluted way to do it.
In one sense it’s pretty impressive the detail it goes into but maybe it’s easier just to wave stuff like this away with Mastermind brain washed everyone or something.
Sins Past was one of those messes that seemed to stem from them getting started on a story before they had worked out how it was going to end. JMS wanted the kids to be Peter’s, but editorial thought that would ‘age’ Spidey even more than his marriage did, so asked JMS to change tack and make the kids Norman’s instead. Really the whole thing should never have got off the starting blocks.
Like I said in the New Comics thread, the retcon in this issue reminds me very much of The Osborn Journal, the mid-90s comic that essentially saw Norman Osborn retrospectively narrate the entire history of the clone saga, allowing Marvel to try and reconcile all the various developments and twists and continuity messes of that storyline and present the final, “official” version of events.
As exercises in clearing up old continuity and drawing a line under past messes, these are quite useful comics, especially from an editorial point of view.
They’re just not much fun to actually read.
It’s retconning a retcon.
Un-conning?

Miqque would have loved this cover. He loved talking about the series Earth X and there are four characters from the series who appear on this cover. DarkDevil(the demonic looking DD) the Cap who wears the flag like a toga, and the iron men looking Giant man and Wasp.
Is it just me or does Devil’s Reign just sound meh? Knowing this is where Zdarsky’s DD run is heading I’m a bit of wary of continuing the OHCs but, by the time I need to make thst decision, event will be done.
It does make me appreciate Immortal Hulk ending next month at #50 without an event though.
I don’t read any of the books set in NYC but I think the idea of a villain with political power using said power against the heroes to be interesting. It could be a more widespread event than you think and require assistance from more writers than normal(e.g. going after FF needs Slott’s approval).
I was quite tempted by the post- Spencer Amazing Spider-man. I like Ben Reilly, and I think Zeb Wells is a pretty cool writer (very similar to Joe Kelly’s style). And, Art Adams on covers! But, looking at those Dec solicits I cannot follow the through line. What the hell are these .Bey issues supposed to be? Is Miles’ title part of the storyline as well now? FFS, Marvel. I’m just going to spend my money on more Bat-books instead.

Oh, it’s guaranteed to be bigger – this is Marvel.
Alternatively, this is proof I’m getting too old for this shit.

Fuck, I tried reading the solicitations and quit about half way through.
I have gotten too old for this shit.
What the hell are these .Bey issues supposed to be?
From what I have gathered(through solicitations), Peter has unbelievable medical bills and selling Spider man IP is how he pays for it. Beyond Corp buys it and hires Ben Reilly to enforce their claim(?). Sounds lame to me. Was this a Spencer idea?
What the hell are these .Bey issues supposed to be?
Readers will finally give up on Marvel, and start selling off their entire collection on e.Bey?

I think as usual it depends how they approach it. Some events really don’t require you to read everything at all. Take for example Inferno all those years ago, New York filled with demons for a while which is hard to ignore in other books set there, however outside of the main X-books none of the other spin-offs need to be read at all.
I know you are a patient reader Ben and I am following Daredevil on Marvel Unlimited, I can give a heads up if it is a satisfying read or messy.
Thanks. What I’m suspecting is Marvel will do what they did in War of Realms – sling out a $100-125 omnibus.
For anyone wanting it in OHC, the cost goes way up from the OHC level of $35-40.
In the case of War of the Realms, that event might make the omnibus work. It’s just a hefty cost.
The Kirby case was then petitioned upto the Supreme Court, with the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg signaling some interest in taking up the case. Marvel at the timefought hard against any high court review, and before the justices decided, the case was settled.
This is actually what this is all about. Nothing will change in the ownership of these characters, it’s worth starting the legal action though because they do pay out to stop it happening.
While Siegel and Schuster (and their estates after they died) have never got the rights back they did get increasing cash settlements. Sometimes they play the game of keeping people onside, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont are in that bracket, receiving annual salaries for generally doing nothing other than not legally contesting.

Marvel’s Evil, Future Hulk Declares ‘World War M’ on Doctor Doom, Abomination & Namor – CBR link
An evil future Hulk returns to fight Doctor Doom, Abomination and Namor in World War M, the conclusion of Peter David’s Maestro trilogy from Marvel.
The Hulk’s evil, future counterpart is coming back for one last fight in the upcoming miniseries Maestro: World War M.
The book will be written by longtime Incredible Hulk scribe and Maestro co-creator Peter David and drawn by the team of Germán Peralta and Pasqual Ferry. After suffering individual defeats, the combined forces of Doctor Doom, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Abomination unite to take on the Maestro in a knockout, bare-knuckle fight for supremacy, with the world hanging in the balance.
Alongside artist George Pérez, David created the Maestro in the 1992 miniseries Hulk: Future Imperfect. In that book, the Hulk was flung into the future and exposed to his Hulk’s darkest timeline — one in which the Maestro rules over the planet with an iron fist. While the Hulk would eventually return to his own era, the Future Imperfect timeline proved to be popular enough to stick around, with Maestro popping up for occasional appearances in books like Exiles and the Genis-Vell Captain Marvel. Starting in 2020, David returned to the character for the miniseries Maestro and Maestro: War and Pax, which began to explore the path that turned the Hulk into an evil tyrant. Now, Maestro: World War M completes the trilogy and closes the door on the Maestro’s story.
Speaking with AIPT, David said, “I am thrilled that Marvel Comics has given me an opportunity to revisit with an old… well, ‘friend’ probably isn’t the best word… an old associate of mine who was and is very entertaining to write.” He also mentioned that “the Maestro has certainly taken off as his own character, and it’s great that I finally had the chance to expand on plot elements that have been rattling around in my head for 20 years.”
In the present day, the Hulk franchise is in the midst of a changing of the guard. Following the cataclysmic ending of Immortal Hulk, writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Ottley will repackage the green goliath in November’s Hulk. Additionally, Jennifer Walters will return to the pages of her own solo series this January with She-Hulk by Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio.

Net info suggests its an uneven package, similar to the Excalibur omnibus 1.

Thanks Vik
No Danny, no interest.
I’ve never understood the backlash. Danny was the minority in the beginning. Blonde haired, Blue eyed was unique in K’un L’un. Even when he came back and worked with Luke he was the odd man out. I am also disappointed that the new one has it on his shirt instead of on his chest. I realize Danny is not a true minority having to deal with institutional racism. But saying that a white man can not learn Asian martial arts is also a form of racism.
Do you imagine Danny Rand is going away? If there’s one thing you can be sure of in comics it is that won’t happen.
i interpreted Vikram’s post as long as Danny isn’t the Iron Fist, he has no interest. I was discussing ,imo, the stupid argument that Danny being the Iron Fist was whitewashing the character. So the answer to your question is NO.
I get that but I think despite those complaints and this new iteration in the end they all become additions. If you don’t like Amadeus Cho there’s a Bruce Banner book on the way, you don’t like Kamala Khan then Carol Danvers has a series.
I read Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade yesterday in one go on Marvel Unlimited. It’s quite a fun read, even though he was in The Avengers around the time I started reading US comics I realised I knew almost nothing about him, other than he’s a bloke with armour and a sword and some Arthurian link.
This series comes in handy as it revolves largely around his background, powers etc. I suspect there may be some bits of retcon in there but I don’t know as I never knew his origins before. I wasn’t nuts about the first issue as Spurrier plays Dane for laughs a bit too much but that eases off and it was an interesting read that sets up a new status quo for the character that may or may not lead anywhere as I doubt Black Knight comics sell that well. Worth a read without being essential.

Marvel announced it will offer three titles for the May 7, 2022 edition, including Avengers/X-Men, Spider-Man/Venom, and Marvel’s Voices one-shot specials.
Avengers/X-Men #1 is by writers Kieron Gillen and Gerry Duggan and artist Dustin Weaver and according to the publisher will lay the groundwork for a 2002 Marvel Universe event that “drastically alters” the relationship between mutantkind and the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Spider-Man/Venom #1 will offer readers a glimpse at what Marvel calls Spider-Man’s new era, along with a look at what creators Al Ewing, Ram V, and Bryan Hitch have going on in Venom.
Finally, Marvel’s Voices #1 will be an introduction to the publisher’s series of specials spotlighting creators and characters from different cultures, communities, and identities across Marvel’s “diverse and ever-evolving universe.”
Back to that Diamond – Marvel reunion … according to the announcement, Avengers/X-Men #1 and Spider-Man/Venom #1 will be offered to retailers exclusively through Diamond, while Marvel’s Voices will be available via Diamond and Marvel’s exclusive comic book Direct Market distributor Penguin Random House Publisher Services (PRHPS).
Marvel switched to PRHPS in March after nearly 40 years with Diamond (25 years exclusively), who continues to act as a wholesale retailer of Marvel products to comic shops.
Diamond is the coordinator of the annual event in which participating comic book specialty shops in North America and around the world give away free comic books to attract new customers to their store and new readers to the art form.

Alex Ross is writing and illustrating Fantastic Four: Full Circle for Abrams ComicsArts which is set to debut on August 2, 2022. It’s the first graphic novel that Marvel has licensed to another publisher in more than 40 years and it will launch a graphic novel collaboration between Marvel and Abrams called MarvelArts. The book will also feature letters by Ariana Maher.
It’s a rainy night in Manhattan, and not a creature is stirring except for . . . Ben Grimm. When an intruder suddenly appears inside the Baxter Building, the Fantastic Four—Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Susan Storm Richards), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm)—find themselves surrounded by a swarm of invading parasites. These carrion creatures composed of Negative Energy come to Earth using a human host as a delivery system. But for what purpose? And who is behind this untimely invasion?
The Fantastic Four have no choice but to journey into the Negative Zone, an alien universe composed entirely of anti-matter, risking not just their own lives but the fate of the cosmos!
“First graphic novel” slightly ignores that they’ve been outsourcing their kids comics to IDW for years, but I’m excited to read this
This was to be the cover for Invasion Of Wakanda #3 (2020) but the series was cancelled when covid hit. It's only just been published in the Empyre Omnibus! pic.twitter.com/hRKbGpvv7l

How the hell are cosplay costumes more comics-accurate than big-budget Hollywood productions?
Marvel Comics releases the first look at the Punisher’s revamped skull symbol
The Punisher has always been one of the more extreme characters in the Marvel Comics pantheon. Now, the gun-toting vigilante is getting an extreme … makeover. In the upcoming 13-issue prestige series, Punisher — set to hit comic-book store shelves in March — Frank Castle trades in the skull symbol that has been part of the character’s costume since his 1974 debut in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man and has also adorned his appearances in other media, including the two-season Netflix series that starred Jon Bernthal.
The first images from Punisher, which is written by Jason Aaron with art by Jesús Saiz and Paul Azaceta, reveal the redesigned skull, which now sports horns and sharpened teeth to reflect his new role as a member of the Hand, a shadowy league of assassins. “This story is the destined next step in the dark and tragic evolution of Frank Castle, from troubled kid to heroic soldier to revenge-driven vigilante … to the duly anointed King of Killers,” Aaron remarks in a press release obtained by Yahoo Entertainment. “Believe me when I say, I am as excited about this story as anything I’ve ever written for Marvel.”
In recent years, the Punisher’s original symbol has been appropriated by police officers and soldiers, much to the chagrin of the character’s co-creator, Gerry Conway. “The vigilante anti-hero is fundamentally a critique of the justice system, an example of social failure, so when cops put Punisher skulls on their cars or members of the military wear Punisher skull patches, they’re basically siding with an enemy of the system,” he told Syfy Wire in 2019. “He is a criminal. Police should not be embracing a criminal as their symbol.”
