Ribic is a perfect fit for Eternals.

  • #36211

    https://kierongillen.substack.com/p/163-cowboy

It’s been a while. I just checked, and by the time Eternals 1 drops, it’ll be over five years since I took lead on a Marvel Superhero book (Siege, during Secret Wars, for the records). I took a break. I was burned out and wanted to do other stuff, mainly my own. What lured me back?

Partially as it has been five years. I’m not burned out any more. Planting clover for a while your superhero bit of your brain works. Plus, I’ve kind of been missing it a bit. Seeing old peers and people who came after me tear things up is a delight, and you do get an itch to get involved.

Secondly, and most importantly, it’s always the chance to do something different, something I haven’t done yet. As in, taking a set of characters who’ve been a way for a while, deconstructing their engine apart, and re-assembling it and unleashing it.

Thirdly, Esad Ribic. I’d said yes before Esad jumped aboard, but my yes changed to YES! the second he did. I expect some YES! yelping from you lot when you see more. It goes without saying it’s good to be working with Matt again, and he and Esad are just magical together. Clayton has yet to escape me, but I’m especially interested to see what he does with the lettering challenge of the book.

Clearly, there’s going to be a lot more chat about Eternals down the line. Here’s the quote I gave for the press-release…

“I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged,” Gillen said. “While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot. It’s everything. There’s enough scale packed in here that I believe that when you look at the comic, you’ll see the pages slightly bulge. Essentially ‘Eternal’ has to mean ‘never going out of style,’ which means we’re aiming for ‘instant classic.’ Also — fight scenes, horror, human drama, emotions, explosions. Comics!”

…which has me laughing at myself. People always ask me for quotes at the end of the day when my brain is fried and my resistance to my own nonsense is low.

Key facts: it’s a clean, accessible book. It’s set in the Marvel universe, and will impact it hard, but it’s also designed to be picked up by anyone and enjoyed. Plus it’s very much me trying to bring to bear the skillset I’ve developed when I’ve been away (especially from WicDiv and DIE) and a whole bunch of other things I’ve been chewing over, in terms of things one could do.

Suffice to say, a huge bible document is involved, as I can’t help myself. In this case, I really can’t. One of my things I’ve tried to be doing more with my work is to do the stuff only I would consider doing, and there’s a lot of that here. Issue 3 has something so offkilter I’m even giving myself side-eye.

I think you’ll like this. Out November. Speak to you retailer. More press soon.

The black and white Wolverine special coming makes me think he could have probably benefited back in the day from a black and white magazine of his own. They didn’t require Code approval, so creators could cut loose.

Another thing about Wolverine I’ve been thinking about: per John Byrne, he was supposed to have actual Adamantium bones as supposed to regular bones laced with Adamantium. I couldn’t help but imagine that the process to replace his natural skeleton would have been even more horrific.

Yes, I tried to post the links (there are over 200 issues), but either it got flagged due to the amount of links, glitched or lost in limbo, as the forum says I posted on the thread but it isn’t showing up.

I linked them on twitter, https://twitter.com/edublake/status/1302238941924544512 & https://twitter.com/edublake/status/1302241132202651648 , among several tweets, includes series, one shots, crossovers, spin-offs, and 1stt appearence, think the only thing not included is The Crew.

I picked up all of the Priest, Hudlin, Mayberry, and Coates issues. Not a big fan of the character but free is free. Did I miss anything important or good?

Edit to add: I also picked up “The Man Without Fear” issues for the lovely Francavilla artwork.

Did they have Panther’s Quest? It was a story that originally appeared in Marvel Comics Presents #13 – 37. It was written by Don McGregor with art by Gene Colan.

  • #37617

Sadly not. They have it in trade, but the free issues are singles only. I know it shouldn’t make any difference given it’s digital! Shame – I love me some Gene Colan artwork!

Black Panther Secret Invasion is a brilliant 3-issue mini.

Do you mean the 3-part arc by Jason Aaron? It wasn’t its own miniseries for some reason, it’s the last three issues of the Hudlin run.

The King in Black event has fourteen (14) books in the first month alone. For a Venom-centric event, that seems excessive and overly optimistic. Reading the description of the main book and ancillaries, the whole thing seems C-level at best. Back in the day, this would have been a story arc in one title or crossed over with two or three other titles for three months. It could be a great event but that’s a lot to put on a second tier character.

I think its things like this that hurt the industry.

  • #38425

Huh, so The Union is happening after all; they just changed the event it’s tying into. Odd.

  • #38430

Wow, I knew Marvel was going to whack the price up of the X of Swords OHC /  Omnibus but $100!?  That makes Amazon’s current price if around £43 a bargain.  I bagged it for a little less.

  • #38463

I actually pre ordered the H/C yesterday from Amazon as soon as I saw the price jump up to $100 in the solicits. £43 for a two dozen issue crossover is pretty good value for money, whichever way you look at it. Unless it’s a bit shit. Then I’ll cancel.

    The Marvel Modern Canon

I’ve made it my mission to pick up some of the best modern Marvel storytelling in the best print format I can find.

What do I mean? Modern classics. Not Kirby, Bryne, Clairemont or Miller. Probably comics produced since the Great Bankruptcy. and in that I’m looking past a collection of issues, for decent stories that go somewhere, tell a new story or shine a new light on characters.

It also needs to be complete and collected to get on my list

The highest of the high standard verses are

    • Immortal Iron Fist
    • Fraction and Aja’s Hawkeye
    • Ultimates 1 + 2
    • Alias
    • Bendis’ Daredevil
    • Gillen’s Loki  ->Gillen’s Young Avengers -> Agent of Asguard
    • Nextwave
    • Hickman’s F4
    • Hickman’s Avengers
    • Morrison’s New x-men

    Apocryphal items

    • Millar and Land’s Ultimate FF  (I have a total soft spot for this, but is it actually good?)
    • Astonishing X-men (it is good. But is it new?)
    • Ellis’s Iron man – Extremis (Super ideas, and then stopped)
    • Hellcat (so good, so short)
    • Brubaker’s Captain America (started so well and then…)
    • Ultimate Spiderman. (amazing in parts, but also Geldof)

    What’s missing?

    What’s heretical?

    Why’s Ms Marvel not there?

That’s a very ’00s list, aside from Hawkeye, Hellcat and Hickman’s Avengers. I’d put in:

    • Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
    • BKV/Alphona’s Runaways
    • Waid/Samnee’s Daredevil
    • Immortal Hulk
    • Aaron’s Thor
    • Wilson’s Ms. Marvel
    • Ahmed/Ward’s Black Bolt
    • Hastings/Gurihuru’s Gwenpool
    • Tom Taylor’s X-23/All-New Wolverine

I’d second King/Walta’s Vision and the Waid/Samnee Daredevil, and I’d also add Jeff Lemire’s run on Moon Knight (with various artists, which is all part of the fun).

Also, if you’re going back as far as early 00s then I’d also add the JMS/JRjr Amazing Spidey and the Loeb/Sale “color” books (particularly Daredevil: Yellow and Spider-Man: Blue)

The insistence to add Sins Past is why I didn’t buy that Omnibus. It’s also why I haven’t shared the old hardcovers with my son yet. He’d enjoy the hell out of the JMS/ JR Jr issues, but he’s not old enough or mature enough for the crap fest that is Sins Past.

It’d be nice if these are added to the last Peter David Hulk Omnibus’ (second one comes November).

Evil Hulk Maestro will return in another limited series in 2021

Peter David will continue Maestro’s adventures in January

Following up the current Maestro limited series, writer Peter David will continue the story of the Hulk’s ascent to becoming the evil super-genius villain, who debuted in David’s ’90s storyline ‘Future Imperfect,’ in January 2021 with a new limited series titled Maestro: War and Pax drawn by Javier Pena.

The new limited series debuts in January, just after the current limited series’ December 23 finale. As with the first Maestro limited series, War and Pax will run for five issues.

“The man once known as the Hulk now answers only to the Maestro!” reads Marvel’s official description of the new limited series.

“After deposing Dystopia’s ancient ruler, the Maestro will now set his sights even higher. With unbridled ambitions, Maestro decides it’s time for the entire planet Earth to recognize him as their one true god!” it continues. “But the Maestro will soon find out that he isn’t the only immortal left…and if he wants to truly dominate the planet, he’ll have to face the most powerful beings in creation!”

This seems to be directly setting the stage for the eventual fight between Maestro and the Avengers, told in the original ‘Future Imperfect’ storyline which introduced the evolved, evil Maestro.

“I am thrilled that, 20 years after I created him, the Maestro still intrigues people so much that the first series garnered the sort of success that demanded a follow-up,” David says in the Maestro: War and Pax series announcement. “As long as folks want to keep reading about him, I’m happy to keep giving them stories.”

Maestro: War and Pax #1 (of 5) is due out in January. Look for Marvel’s full January 2021 solicitations right here on Newsarama later this month.

Marvel’s Shang-Chi and Lady Deathstrike will team up this January

Legend of Shang-Chi, a new Shang-Chi one-shot from Marvel Comics, is on the way! Writer Alyssa Wong and artist Andie Tong have teamed up for the adventure, which sees the superhero Shang-Chi and Leiko Wu join forces to find a sword that devours people’s souls. To keep the weapon from falling into the wrong hands, they’ll have to steal it, but they have competition: Lady Deathstrike.

    From Wong:

I’m stoked to write Shang-Chi! My first introduction to the character was in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas, written by Greg Pak and drawn by Gang Hyuk Lim. I think Shang-Chi’s super interesting: he’s a guy who goes toe-to-toe with superpowered metahumans every day, and his special ability is that he’s really, really good at martial arts. That’s it. But that’s all he needs; he’s fast, acrobatic, and literally the best at what he does. I feel like Shang-Chi radiates Good Older Brother energy. He’ll protect you AND buy you snacks afterward. What else do you really need?

For this adventure, I wanted to pit Shang-Chi against a villain with an equally agile, physical fighting style. Lady Deathstrike seemed like a natural choice. She’s got adamantium claws and an iron will. In the past, she’s faced off against Wolverine (many times!) and even been a reluctant hero. She’s a lot of fun. Lady Deathstrike is someone who can hold her own against Shang-Chi; if he wants to beat her, he’ll have to get creative.

Odd that he has a movie coming out six months later (as of now at least), and they’re only giving him a one-shot.

Marvel seem to have a policy of releasing issues to coincide with a film release, when it would be far more sensible to do it first and release a trade at the time because it’s far more likely someone will spot it in a bookshop than seek out a comics shop.

Marvel seem to have a policy of releasing issues to coincide with a film release, when it would be far more sensible to do it first and release a trade at the time because it’s far more likely someone will spot it in a bookshop than seek out a comics shop.

This was a common complaint for a while but they’ve got better over the years and I think they do a bit of both now. They use the film releases as marketing to launch a new series for floppy buyers but they also have relevant collections of older material in the shops as the movies come out.

Certainly I’ve seen various collections lined up for publication just ahead of the movie release for a long while now, and often with MCU-like branding. Stuff like this sticks in my mind (published March 2014 ahead of the April 2014 movie release):

And for a more recent example we saw a lot of “new” collections of repackaged Black Widow material at the start of this year (when the movie was expected to come out this summer).

I guess we see the #1 floppy release and think it’s a missed opportunity to get a new series collection into people’s hands (because the series won’t be finished for months) but they’re playing all angles with this stuff, and promoting a new floppy series is part of it. They also tend to schedule omnibus releases to coincide with movies too. So they’re using the movies to raise awareness in all channels.

Ultimately I guess a casual bookstore reader probably won’t care whether a collection is brand new material or just something opportunistically repackaged, so it kind of makes sense to me to be lining up new/old collections for them and brand new #1 issues for the LCS faithful.

The current Maestro mini- series is pretty great. Peter David on the Hulk always seems to just feel right somehow. I’m happy that he’s been given an almost immediate extension. Hopefully this will continue, resulting in a pseudo- ongoing.

There’a a new X-Men Legends series launching in February (assuming we make it that far), where notable X-Creators of the past tell new “lost tales”. It starts with Fabian Nicieza, with further stories promised from Chris Claremont and Peter David (amongst others).  Sounds fantastic. Looking forward to it.

This is doing rounds on twitter, in various forms.

I first thought, “Arachno-Male for sure” but came around to include “Unkillable Talkative Pyjamas Mercenary” and “Adamantium-rippiong Helmet-Man With Purpose” before ruling them all out in favour of “MISTER ALL CAPS!”

Remember, this is David Meadows 2.0. This one is English.

Version 1.0 was an American who was in the military.

I don’t know if you’ve read any of the Winter Soldier stuff but he becomes a legendary assassin after his ‘death’.

    There’s a name I haven’t heard in a long while.

I was thinking more of SCARRED REGENT GENIUS CLAD IN METAL, but you might’ve got that.
