I am now certain that 99% of people who throw around the term ‘safespace’ have no fucking clue as to what it is or why it is important and valuable.
Honestly, 99% is a lowball
Coincidentally, it’s just been revealed that Lowball is a brand new Marvel character.
You don’t want to read his description.
Get ready to meet some of the dumbest fucking superheroes of all time:

Russia Today. Just looked it up.
I was gonna say Rotten Tomatoes… u_u
Well, I guess congrats are in order, Marvel fianlly managed to unite the whole of the internet in their hatred for these new warriors… xD
For once the SJWs and the Comicsgaters can unite hands and trash something together… it’s… beautiful =’)
On the plus side, New Warriors is only a five-issue miniseries.
I can see those characters not making any more appearances for a few years until some other writer needs some random characters to kill.
Basically a DeviantArt OC versions of the original five X-Men. Pass
Is Children of the Atom and New Warriors is what we are getting from Cebulski as editor in chief?

That looks pretty cool. It sounds like a lot of thought has gone into it. I’m going to give at least the first issue a shot.
It’s hard to tell whether it’s meant to be a bit of a mean spirited parody or a really bad, honest attempt at this kind of thing.
It is but I think it’s most likely the latter.

It can be two things!
Remember when Marvel used to be known as The House of Idiots?
FTFY
The New Warriors thing is a bit head scratching though. It’s hard to tell whether it’s meant to be a bit of a mean spirited parody or a really bad, honest attempt at this kind of thing.
The writer explained his intent was for the characters to be reclaiming the words, sort of throwing them in the face of the alt-right. The problem is safe space isn’t a slur and snowflake is just a mild insult, I can’t see anyone passionate about social justice wanting to call themselves either. I think it’s well-intentioned but tone deaf.
I’m surprised there’s no superhero named Social Justice Warrior.
That looks pretty cool. It sounds like a lot of thought has gone into it. I’m going to give at least the first issue a shot.
I agree, it looks a lot better than New Warriors. I don’t think reflecting what kids do nowadays is necessarily wrong, the original X-Men were doing the ‘hippy shake’ in some issues, Jean got a mini skirt.
I’m okay with it reflecting what kids do nowadays, a lot of it does revolve around Instagram and Youtube. There’s a balance to be had that it doesn’t try too hard but it seems to have that a lot better than NW.
Some are already saying the new New Warriors may be Marvel’s downfall.
I think ‘some’ may be overstating the power of one book even if it’s awful, if it is they’ll cancel it soon enough and people will still want to buy Wolverine and Spider-Man. When Jemas and Quesada were in their ‘anything goes’ phase of the early 2000s they put out some truly dreadful books but now people only remember the good ones.
The threat right now is if comic shops go bust due to Covid-19 and Marvel don’t have a large enough retail base to sell them.

How many of them are the people who said the Captain Marvel movie would be a box-office failure?

I can’t believe comic book shops are not considered “essential services”. Who made this judgment call?
Thankfully, liquor stores are still in the “essential” category, so all is not lost.
Seriously, though, I hope all of us, everywhere, are taking the proper precautions not only to protect ourselves, but also to inhibit the spread of this thing to other members of the community.
Forbidden Planet in nyc is closed and is talking like they may not reopen.

It’s only a five (5) issue miniseries. It will run it’s course and the characters won’t be seen again until sometime down the line, a writer needs some disposable characters to die for a story.
Forbidden Planet in nyc is closed and is talking like they may not reopen.
One of my favorite hangouts. I hope they reopen but I’m not naive.
It’s tough, comic shops operate on pretty thin margins, even two or three months of reduced income may well take some under. I have seen that Marvel and Image are offering things like returnables and deep discounts for the next couple of months so retailers have some breathing room.
With Forbidden Planet International having the strength of a chain of 15 shops and established web sales though I suspect that if they really aren’t going to re-open that NY store they were planning to close it anyway.
I saw that ForbiddenPlanet.com announced today that all UK stores were closing as of this evening too. Not sure what’s happening with the ‘other’ FP.
I always second guess myself about which is which, as it’s so counter-intuitive.
Found a bunch of old notes and series pitches for Lobo, Namor, Silver Surfer, Iron Fist, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ka-Zar. All declined between 2006-2009. Whatever it is you want to do, it can take a ton of rejection before you get it. pic.twitter.com/TDOedulDgh

I’m still not certain if this is some sort of publicity stunt – I’m hearing a lot about it from people who definitely will only read it so they can talk about it – but I agree. With the state of comics – especially the shape stores will soon be in (mostly closing across the country) – it doesn’t seem like the best approach to put out a comic that seems more designed to offend a small set of potential readers but has no apparent appeal to the broad readership.
Essentially, what is the pitch of the book for the majority of people who still dedicate time and money to pick up and read monthly comics? I mean, that is really the only way it will have any broad influence anyway. If people don’t read it – and don’t buy it – whatever the creators or publisher wants to achieve is irrelevant.

Not necessarily. DC have been working quite hard on putting out YA material that while it is sold in comic shops, that isn’t the primary market. There’s a group of kids coming through who’s path into comics has been from Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants and Dog Man into Raina Telgemeier’s work, a bit of manga and into the kind of material DC has been putting out. All via either bookshops or buying online.
https://www.dccomics.com/tags/ya-graphic-novel
Saying that I think this looks pretty poorly conceived and I’d be surprised if it works for either market. I think Marvel have long had a problem in trying to branch out from the core standard monthly superheroics which is why they do fractions in the book market that DC do.

That’s a good point. Has that been working for DC, though? It seems like the material that might appeal to to a non-monthly comics reader from either DC or Marvel tends to fizzle out. Even if it actually is appealing to that market.
Really, what are DC or Marvel really doing to get in front of people who would actually pay to read what they produce? Some suggest that the comics are a good way to mine or farm new properties for other media (movies/tv/games/toys), but honestly, I don’t think the comics are really formulated to do that very well.
Certainly, the editorial approach doesn’t really seem to go for anything that might appeal to a broader or even more diverse audience.
That’s a good point. Has that been working for DC, though?
It’s hard to tell because bookstore sales are verily sketchily reported compared to monthly and digital are not reported at all.
However my usual measure is to see how long they stick with something, they aren’t charities so if a book or imprint of books is flopping it won’t be around long. They are a couple of years into it so it can’t be that bad.
This is a slight problem with comics fans. They preach for reaching outside the old standard market but then look at the old standard metrics to define success. It’s a constant refrain that there are no comics for young kids, there are loads of them, including from Marvel and DC. I have two primary/elementary age kids and read them to them all the time. They have been consistently been publishing them for 20+ years (back to Millar on his all ages Superman book). They do nothing in the direct market but the material is repackaged into international comics and book collections.
The average adult consumer believes they aren’t there because they are now created differently away from the monthly shared universe like they were when they were kids.
X-Men: Krakoa Represents a Major Problem in Superhero Comics
The X-Men have defeated death — but that removes all the tension of these tragedies, which is a major problem in superhero comics generally.
by Carter Burrowes
Mar 27, 2020
There really aren’t very many bad things to say about Jonathan Hickman’s rehaul of the X-Men line, beginning with last year’s House of X and Powers of X. The storyline is — as is a theme with Hickman — meticulously structured and carried off with near-perfect execution. However, the fly in the Krakoan ointment is the resurrection protocols: the X-Men have defeated death in Dawn of X, but in doing so have lowered the stakes significantly.
The exact point at which comics began treating death as a revolving door is hard to pin down. The first big resurrection was undoubtedly Jean Grey coming back after her death as the Phoenix; however, this resulted from an editorial agreement in that Jim Shooter thought she needed to die after destroying an entire planet and the writers disagreed.
Not only did the introduction of resurrection mean that characters could die dramatically but not be lost for future stories, but also that the deaths of high-profile characters could become massive marketing ploys. Consider, for example, 1992’s The Death of Superman followed by Reign of the Supermen. This went on to spawn numerous character death and return storylines which rarely happen for any other reason other than to move units.
X-Men stories have a long history of killing and reviving their characters for spectacle. At this point, it seems like Charles Xavier fluctuates between living and dead every other month. Unfortunately, character deaths have been rendered ultimately meaningless. The Krakoan resurrection protocols have now made it so characters can return at will, which means there’s no tension when characters die.
In X-Force #8, Domino — the luckiest Mutant alive — is fatally wounded. She dies when she and Colossus are forced to derail a train full of genetically engineered assassins manufactured with Domino’s DNA (and thus her uncanny luck). This kills everyone inside, including Domino herself. The issue ends on Colossus cradling Domino in his arms while she is just barely clinging to life. After she draws her last breath, his head drops to his chest and everything about the panel suggests that the reader should feel something regarding her death.
However, the emotion isn’t there. Now that Wolverine, Mystique, Magik, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Apocalypse, Synch, Jean Grey and (of course) Professor X have died and been reborn, this scene doesn’t carry any weight. Domino’s death is more of an inconvenience than a sacrifice.
To drive the point home, X-Factor #9 begins with mutants partying at Krakoan bar The Green Lagoon. Wolverine and his family are playing a sort of canucklehead roulette and Domino, reborn and back to normal, is sitting at the bar drinking. She doesn’t remember being skinned alive — even though she made Colossus promise that she be returned with all of her memories — and she seems OK with that. Her resurrection is so inconsequential, in fact, that it isn’t even shown on-page.
Almost immediately, Wolverine, Domino and Quentin Quire are sent on a mission to Terre Verde, but the sense of danger is completely missing. The last panel is Quentin being dragged into a Mayan temple by a vicious vine, but once again, the stakes are non-existent.
In A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. Le Guin writes, “For a word to be spoken, there must be silence. Before, and after.” This quote is about how death brings meaning to life because it defines life through its finality. This should hold true for fictional characters, even in comics. There are examples of truly final deaths: Thomas and Martha Wayne, Ben Parker and Gwen Stacy are — by editorial mandate — unchangeable. This demonstrates an awareness of what death means and the way it defines the life of the person who’s passed on and the lives of people left to grieve. An integral part of the hero’s journey is death, though that seems to be forgotten in superhero comics.
Resurrection protocols in X-Men comics effectively give every mutant the power of immortality, which makes it difficult to be invested in the safety of characters who can be brought back over and over. If Death doesn’t matter, heroes aren’t risking anything. Readers have been aware of this for years, but now characters are aware of it as well, which means their deaths aren’t even meaningful to each other. It doesn’t matter when Domino or Jean Grey or anyone dies, because death has been rendered the same as being simply knocked out. Emotional investment is nearly impossible under these circumstances, for readers and characters alike.
It’s all in the plan, yes the resurrection protocols remove narrative risk. I’d bet my house, non existent yacht and a mine full of gold none of this is the end state from Hickman.
Why do morons write articles like this unless maybe they discovered their first comic last week.
Also: JR – share the links with a bit more quality control.

Comedy gold!

I would disagree… I’ve been trying to somewhat follow the “rehaul”, but they’ve already run into the usual problems… too many books, some of which are just plain bad, either the writing or, more usually, the art. And then the “main” plot is like, I don’t even know what it’s like, but it feels like it’s not really going anywhere at this point. They’re already planning crossovers and events… that’s never a good sign.

What you don’t realize is that his yacht’s name is “non existent”. It’s how he gets by here without appearing overly pretentious.

Her ultimate failure will be to actually die because you know she will be brought back sooner or later.

Yeah, it’s not likely the comics will kill her off while she’s still a key character in the MCU.

For the 600th episode of Atop the Fourth Wall, Linkara reviews perhaps the worst Spider-Man story ever:
[Oh, hell no!]
Did you really not like Ta-Nehisi Coates BP? It’s the one with the intergalactic empire of wakanda, right? I kinda liked parts of it, but it was kinda weird.
T’Challa as capable
More than capable. I personally think Hudlin’s BP (and Wakanda) is the best BP since Busieks Avengers.
And don’t even get me started on the rape camps.
Yeah… I had repressed that.
I was reminded today of Santa Claus’s entry in the OHOTMU, which is one of my favourite pieces of writing ever:

Why stop there? Add Father Christmas, Wodan, Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas and Klaus into the mix and make it like the timeless classic “Mortal Kombat”!

Off the top of my head, he’s written the Free Comic Book story, X-Men #12 and X of Swords: Creation.
SPIDER-WOMAN #5
Written by KARLA PACHECO
Art by PERE PÉREZ & MATTIA DE IULIS
Cover by GREG LANDOfficial Press Release
New York, NY — July 21, 2020 — Since her debut in 1977’s Marvel Spotlight #32, Spider-Woman has played many different roles across the Marvel Universe from S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent to Avenger. Over the years, her astounding adventures have made her one of Marvel’s most popular Super Heroes, even starring in her very own Saturday morning cartoon now streaming on Disney+. This October, Marvel is proud to celebrate the 100th issue of SPIDER-WOMAN by bringing you a landmark issue that’s full of venom blasts, intrigue, and all the high-stakes Super Hero action Jessica Drew fans love her for!
SPIDER-WOMAN #5, a special giant-sized issue of the current action-packed run by writer Karla Pacheco and artist Pere Pérez, will have Jessica continuing her feud with Octavia Vermis, the daughter of Spider-Woman’s classic HYDRA foe, Otto Vermis. Just when you thought the complex web that makes up Jessica Drew’s life couldn’t get any more complicated, Spider-Woman discovers long hidden truths about her origin, her family, and her future. These bold revelations will propel Jessica Drew into this redefining chapter of her Super Hero career!
“When Jessica Drew made her first appearance in Marvel Spotlight #32 on February 10, 1977, I was also making my first appearance,” Pacheco said. “One hundred issues and 43 years later, it’s been a wild journey for both myself and Spider-Woman. I am beyond proud to be part of the amazing team bringing Jess back in this series, and I think it’s so incredible we get to pay tribute to the history of Spider-Woman, while setting up the next, absolutely MINDBLOWING chapter of Jessica Drew’s adventures. Seriously, if you thought the first 5 issues were bonkers… I assure you, we’re just getting started.”
Check out the explosive cover by superstar artist Greg Land, and pick up SPIDER-WOMAN #100 at your local comic shop this October! For more information, visit marvel.com.
Looking at the publishing history of Spider-Woman books I have no idea how they make that the 100th issue. I get 110.
There were two series with a different, non Jessica Drew, character but take those away and I get 88. I suspect they can use creative maths to launch an ‘anniversary issue’ whenever they like.

There was a built-in restriction limiting to 2 links a post, I changed it at the start of last week to 10 links. That may make life a bit easier for your threads.
Dr Strange: the End has just turned up on Marvel Unlimited.
I was surprised by how good it was. It not perfect, it would need to find stronger links between the introduction and the end, but still, strong for as one-off.
Although it’s not quite a one-off. I did a little digging and found a What if: Magik
issue by the same author/artist combination. Almost as good, though i guess I read them in the wrong order.
If only that damn film came out, maybe we could have nice things.
I’d completely missed that Gillen was back at Marvel, and working with Ribic:
