Glee crossed with Ultimate Spider Man – I can only hope for the musical issue

  • #14165

Every issue is a musical episode if you sing it while reading it.

  • #14198

They’ve been musical before, take out speech balloons and you’ll get this panel.

Thanks, Maxmarvel; now I got the huge Finale from Les Miz running through my head.

  • #14261

Who are the two female characters either side of Cap? (I’m thinking maybe Timely characters like Aarkus?)

  • #14262

I think the one on the right is White Fox, the Korean superhero Marvel made a little while back and are trying to promote more now.

EDIT: Nope, turns out I’m totally wrong on that, White Fox wear a black costume, obviously.

Cool to see Busiek back doing something at Marvel (shame Alex Ross is involved, though hopefully it’s only covers).

The one wearing white suit on the right is Aero, she’s a newer character from New Agents of Atlas.

    https://comicbook.com/marvel/2020/02/10/marvel-comics-the-marvels-entire-marvel-universe-ongoing-series-kurt-busiek/

Marvel Comics on Monday announced The Marvels, a new ongoing series from Kurt Busiek (Marvels, The Avengers) and Yildiray Cinar (Image Comics’ Noble Causes). Described as “the biggest, wildest, most sprawling series ever to hit the Marvel Universe,” the expansive series takes readers “across the Marvel Universe… and beyond,” with appearances from Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch and Reed Richards, Storm of the X-Men, the Punisher, and more, as well as introduce two new characters. In an interview with Marvel.com, Busiek teases the upcoming epic that can “go anywhere, do anything, [and] use anyone” from the Marvel Universe.

“I think I started with ‘Anyone. Anywhere. Any time,'” Busiek said of his pitch for the series. “The whole idea of The Marvels is to be able to use the whole Marvel Universe — not just all the characters in it, but all the history of it. The sweeping scope of the whole thing. I think I described it to Tom Brevoort as something like a Tom Clancy thriller, in that there would be multiple threads of story going on, and those threads could come together and split apart again, or maybe never even meet — there could be characters involved in a story that do something important but never meet the other characters in the story, which will very much be the case in the opening storyline, at least.”

MARK WAID Relaunches SQUADRON SUPREME Out of EMPYRE – Newsarama

The recently-revitalized Squadron Supreme are spinning out into their own two-issue series as part of Marvel’s summer event Empyre.
This new incarnation of the team, titled the Squadron Supreme of America, is now U.S.’s premiere state-sanctioned superhero force. The group is comprised of Hyperion, Power Princess, Dr. Spectrum, Blur, and Nighthawk – with the latter serving as team leader. They work alongside U.S. government liaison Phil Coulson. This new version of the team was recently introduced in Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness’ Avengers run.
“The Squadron Supreme of America finds itself dead-center in battleground Washington, D.C., caught between two invading forces in a story that puts a modern spin on some of the Silver Age of Comics’ more familiar tropes,” said Empyre: Squadron Supreme writer Mark Waid. “It’s a blast to write.”
For this series, Waid is working with Dio Neves, who recently finished up work on DC’s Deathstroke.

Here is a solicitation for Empyre: Squadron Supreme #1, which debuts in May.
Look for Marvel’s full May 2020 solicitations latert his month on newsarama.

EMPYRE: SQUADRON SUPREME #1 (OF 2)
MARK WAID (W) • DIO NEVES (A) • COVER BY PACO MEDINA
The invasion has begun! But the alien invaders soon encounter resistance in the form of the Squadron Supreme of America! As the two forces clash, only one thing is clear…the fight for America’s survival has begun!

  • #14521

I am totally up for Waid doing the Squadron Supreme. I didn’t finish off the last iteration (yet!) so I’m curious what, if any, connective tissue it’ll have to that, but this should be good. Hopefully it’ll move into an ongoing.

  • #14536

this current version is from Aaron’s Avengers. Coulson has a big secret.

Paul Grist! What little I read of Jack Staff always felt like a partial parody of Union Jack, so it’s odd to see him writing the real thing.

I think the rest are new characters?

  • #14792

The title is already causing ruffles amongst Scottish Indy comics twitter.

“The Union” is a bit problematic time wise. I’m going to follow up with a a few retailers and see if they plan on promoting/ investing in it.

Scotlands Indy comic scene is very pro Yes/ Independence movement.

Look it’s not like they were ever going to sell huge numbers up here but I can see a couple of stores just flat out refuse to stock it.

  • #14822

The Union is a poorly chosen name for a few reasons. I could see it changing.

The last UK team book I remember enjoying was Cornell’s MI-13. That was a fun title.

  • #14832

The Union is a poorly chosen name for a few reasons. I could see it changing.

  • #14836

The title is not the best at this time (which probably flies right over the heads of editors in New York).

Nice to see Paul Grist back though. The last thing I read from him was Mudman at Image and it was pretty sad in the back that he was admitting his books didn’t sell enough to be able to support him  any more. A gig at Marvel will at least give him that and he’s a very talented guy.

I’m going to guess now that the green haired one is Northern Irish, the red head is Welsh and the big lunking bloke is the Scot. Let us see.

Is there some kind of history to United Kingdoms International Powerhouses?  No wonder they changed it.  He should have led with something a bit stronger.  Hell, I UK Avengers would have been a better title.

  • #14864

It’s a joke about the Ukip political party in the UK, which was largely behind the push for Brexit.

    It’s a joke.

    The initials are UKIP.

  • #14866

I feel sorry for Paul Grist. Feels like he’s being thrown under the bus here.

Theres still time for the title to be changed but I think it’s unlikely.

Maybe the hubbub around the title will give the book more publicity.  It seems like the kind of book that would have otherwise just gone under the radar.

Ahhh.  Thanks.  I’ve been mostly trying to stay out of American politics.  So UK politics is a whole other level removed.

I sympathise as a Welsh independence supporter but it’s probably a very small portion of the market, if you also take in those that may not be fans of the name but will buy it anyway (like me, as I like Paul Grist comics).

The number that will flat out refuse to get the book because of the title is going to be fairly small I imagine, even if it seems big from you Twitter feed.

Coming back to these, the taglines are really crap aren’t they? The first one reads like anti-Irish propaganda and the second one makes them sound like a bunch of incompetents.

  • #15163

that also means that the green and pink ones are Wales and Scotland.  I am very unqualified to make this distinction but I was under the impression that St. Patrick was more Irish than Norn Iron(if that makes any sense*) so I am confused by the first one.

I am giving this Paul Grist the benefit of the doubt but I am beginning to think either he has to have a ulterior motive or he is getting crushed by Editorial and Marketing.

(*it is probably me being influenced by Irish-American propaganda that says Ireland is all Happy go lucky Catholic pub goers and Norn Iron is serious Protestant church goers.) My apologies to anyone offended by my assumptions.

  • #15165

  • #15166

St Patrick is assumed to be Welsh by birth (he definitely wasn’t born in Ireland as he went over as a missionary) and is apparently buried in Northern Ireland – as much as you can believe most claims of that age. All around 15000 years before the island was divided politically.

To be honest everything related to Northern Ireland will offend somebody who’ll take a strong stance but I think nowadays St Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the north, Bernadette could give greater insight.

I think nowadays St Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the north,

If it isn’t, that would make it the only corner of the entire globe where it isn’t. I believe they raise a glass of Guinness in the remote valleys of Nepal, and Amazonian tribes who have never encountered Europeans still paint themselves green on March 17th.

  • #15188

That’s not correct English is it? Hills is a plural so it should be ‘echo’.

Also, surely it should be “The hills of Wales echo with song”.

And hang on, “The Union” (a name which I didn’t really have a problem with, btw) is made up of Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and “Great Britain” which, depending on your point of view, means England is either getting diminished by being subsumed into the complete national identity or insultingly conflated with the concept of the entire country as though it’s the only valid constituent part of “Great Britain” and Wales and Scotland are separate from that.

I’m hoping Grist turns out a good, savvy comic and I’m going to check it out, but he’s really not being helped by Marvel.

Union Jack is there for England.

But Union Jack is wearing a costume of the flag of the entire UK, not just England. That’s like having Captain America represent just Delaware in a group of heroes of all 50 states.

(and I just realised there was another page I hadn’t seen when I posted last and that everyone had pointed out the “echoes” thing already”. Doi.).

So it’s a five-issue miniseries that ties into a crossover that has about 10 other minis and one-shots in the month of May alone.

    OK, this is kinda adorable:

    RUNAWAYS #34

    RAINBOW ROWELL (W)
    ANDRÉS GENOLET (A)
    Cover by KRIS ANKA

Wolverine and Pixie guest star in RUNAWAYS and answer what Runaways fans have been asking for months: With the X-Men’s opening of Krakoa, the island-nation that welcomes mutants in existence, will Molly go? You may think you know the answer to that or what is going to happen here, but this comic is like its stars: They never do what they’re told—or expected—to do.

    Runaways is a great series.

I’m hoping it gets to #42, which will tie Rowell with BKV as the longest-running writer on the series.

Has Molly been aged up a bit?

Yeah I haven’t got a clue what that’s about. Awful.

Not much. They establish that two years have passed between Gert’s death and return, but I think the cover is just exaggerating Wolverine’s shortness a bit.

I am now certain that 99% of people who throw around the term ‘safespace’ have no fucking clue as to what it is or why it is important and valuable.

Lol I just saw this, I was coming to post this… this is bad, man… what the fuck’s up with Marvel? It’s like they get worse and worse every year.

Oh btw, anyone knows where I can score some of this “experimental internet gas”??? I’m already fat, so I guess I’d fit right in with these new bland uninspired abortions…

Funniest comment I heard on another site I frequent:

man looking closer at B-Negative’s design is making me pop an artery
hot-topic lookin head ass dragged himself out of an Avenged Sevenfold coverband long enough to fight crime
