Marvel and Games Workshop Team Up to Publish Warhammer Comics

Star Wars to relaunch in Jan 2020 picking up from the end of Empire Strikes Back. Soule comes on board as writer, Saiz on art.

Bigger news for me is a third Vader book with Pak and Ienco on art. I’ve enjoyed Ienco’s work with Hawkins so it’s great to see him getting a big break like this. He’s also a skilled digital colourist too.

  • #655

I really liked Soule’s Vader book, so looking forward to him taking over for the next series. Did they say anything about the period for the new Vader book?

  • #703

Same as the relaunched main book, starting from the end of Empire.

  • #705

    Ewing! Guardians! Fuck yeah.

  • #708

It would’ve been much better if they could get rid of that stupid space junky buckethead.

I enjoyed what I’ve read of Donny Cates’ Venom quite a lot. Tempted to check this out.

Odd that little picture of Nova has been swiped from one of the early Adi Granov covers for the DnA run.

They may as well. From what I have read they have to pay Claremont a salary anyway, as well as Tom Defalco. In a similar ‘here’s some cash, don’t ever try and claim any IP’ deal to what Stan Lee had, from the days of contracts on the back of cheques and not the watertight deals they do now.

Put him on nostalgia material like the New Mutants special and ardent fans will at least allow them to break even on it.

On another note, I’ve been enjoying John Byrne’s X-MEN: ELSEWHEN comic:

He will now be responsible for the overall creative direction of Marvel’s storytelling across mediums, including publishing, film, TV, and animation. Marvel TV and Marvel Family Entertainment will be moving under the Marvel Studios banner. Feige continues to report to Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn and co-chairman Alan Bergman.

As long as he’s not force them to do “let’s make all comics exactly like MCU!” stuff, that’s fine i guess.

  • #2522

HAHAHA THATS WHAT YOU GET PERLMUTTER!

  • #2527

    Make Marvel Feige

  • #2534

Now that’s interesting. Marvel have been selling comics just fine but creatively they’ve been in the doldrums for years, locked into an eternal event cycle of their own making.

Alonso couldn’t fix it, neither could Cebulski.

    Can Feige? We’ll find out.

  • #2539

We know that Buckley, Cebulski, Amanat, Wacker and Quesada will all continue in their roles, it’s just that ultimately they report to Feige.

To be honest, I doubt we’ll see much change in the realm of publishing but I’d bet there’ll be a more concerted effort at synchrosing character pushes and storylines.

I’m not going to be surprised if Marvel Comics pushes the Eternals in big way, or if we only see Marvel TV on Disney+ going forward. That’s not to suggest they wouldn’t have done this regardless but this move really smacks to me of pushing Perlmutter out to licensing and toys and removing any influence he had on the narrative of the brand (last we forget: The Inhumans)

  • #2557

As long as he’s not force them to do “let’s make all comics exactly like MCU!” stuff, that’s fine i guess.

    .
It may actually serve him better to do the exact opposite.
    .
The film and TV side eats up the ideas generated in the comics and Feige has long been an advocate of taking from the source material. (The story goes when he was on a more junior role on the X-Men films he was sat reading the comics and argued with other producers on why they were making new stuff up when there’s gold in the source material).
    .
So putting the film material into the comics essentially dries up his well. While a lot of the concepts are back in the archives of Marvel comics they are drawing on newer stuff. The Captain Marvel costume is Jamie McKelvie’s design, there’s a Ms Marvel TV show coming up and one with Kate Bishop etc.

Yeah, I agree, I’m not sure we’ll see a huge change as a result of this.

Marvel are already pretty good at lining up material with the movies (in terms of putting a lot of content out about a given character when they have a film on the way), so I don’t expect that to change.

  • #2643

the Tarot series looks beautiful. The Avengers/Defenders war was about the same time I started reading comics so I look forward to this. I must admit i like Davis better as an artist than a writer though. I agree with Gar but it may be that Tim is also right in synchronizing character pushes. Feige tells CB that that they need a new story idea about Captain Marvel or the Eternals.

  • #2692

So I got overwhelmed by the hype train and ended up reading Hox/Pox, finishing it up this evening.
    .
    What a load of cobblers.
    .
Hickman has some intriguing ideas and if he ever learns how to dramatise them it should make for a decent comic. As it is, this is not a story. It’s twelve issues of stuff that happens and I don’t think he understands the difference. The structure is a mess and there’s no emotion or character depth to any of it, with pretty much the only three people that don’t sound like interchangeable, soulless plot zombies being Cypher (ironically, given his TO infection), Nimrod (even more ironically) and Sinister (who, as much as I like Gillen’s ostentatious take, shouldn’t be anything like that in the flashbacks). The infographics gimmick was passable back in Secret Warriors, but now it’s just a bit sad. Every single one of those “data pages” is a failing of story-telling that a top tier comics writer shouldn’t be getting away with. It feels like reading a comic interspersed with his design documents that he hasn’t managed to fit into the story.
    .
As I read this, I just kept thinking of Transformers MTMTE/LL. James Roberts frequently came up with ideas as big or bold or clever as anything in this series and yet also managed to weave them into actual proper stories, ones with structure, form, character depth, genuine emotion and even jokes. The amount that Roberts achieved in the same amount of issues as Hickman uses here puts this series to shame.

  • #2720

I think those criticisms are fair. I’ve said before that I don’t really like Hickman’s info-dump text pages, but I actually think they worked better here than in some of his previous projects.

I also felt a bit disappointed that a lot of the big ideas didn’t go anywhere, but in the larger context of this being setup for Hickman’s wider run on X-Men, I can accept that it exists mainly to introduce these ideas rather than to do anything with them.

Where I think it succeeded is in (re)introducing a real-world relevance to the X-Men again, making the moral issues feel genuinely complex and difficult and dangerous. For me, that (along with the potential of the big ideas) has bought Hickman enough credit that I’ll follow him into the first few issues of his X-Men run proper, at least.

  • #2737

I think those criticisms are fair.

These criticism ARE NOT fair and Martin and I are no longer friends. Martin is a load of cobblers!

Does Kevin Feige’s Marvel Promotion Mean Ike Perlmutter’s Endgame?

Gotta love this pic in the article:

  • #3596

    2 issue minis?

Yeah, they’ve done that before. Infinity Wars and Spider-Geddon both had a few two-issue minis.

  • #3604

Fun pic but Ike is coming up to 77 years old. His influence on Marvel is lessening and will end soon enough.

  • #3621

Perlmutter made bank on Marvel’s sale to Disney (in cash and stocks) and turned down a seat on Disney’s board of directors. I doubt he gives a shit about what Feige does and doesn’t control.
    .
It’s also a weird time to update his picture. The one below is the one I have seen for years.
    .

    • This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by RonnieM.
  • #3624

I question Perlmutter was ever offered a seat on the board.

I know it says “he didn’t accept one” in the wiki article which cites THR, but I don’t recall any circulars discussing a potential election and I’m a shareholder.

Perlmutter loves money and doesn’t live in 2019. Maybe his ego isn’t so pronounced that he will shrug off being pushed aside because he still has his dollars. I don’t know. But I do love hearing stories about any influence he has waning less and less. I understand he (and Lucas) have been selling their shares to Iger and co for the last 5 years. Maybe he wants to cash out, but regardless thats a good thing.

There is more than enough stories about Perlmutters eccentricities and whims out there on Google which will probably provide the most informed picture of what Perlmutter may or may not care about.

  • #3632

I would if it was maybe by someone other than Feige whose ego is equal if not larger.

  • #3635

Well if this is about picking sides:

As teased in House of X #1, the four-issue X-Men/Fantastic Four title will explore how the broader Marvel U takes to this revitalized and re-organized mutantkind – specifically dealing with Fantastic Four’s Franklin Richards, considered one of the most powerful mutants of all time.

Marvel 2-in-One’s Chip Zdarsky returns to the Richards family in this crucial moment, joined by long-time X-Men artists Terry and Rachel Dodson for a story described as having both “quiet family moments and giant explosive moments”. Announced just now at London’s MCM Comic Con, Zdarsky spoke with Newsarama about this new series scheduled to debut in February.

I might at least give it a shot. Zub has a fondness for fantasy and D&D that usually goes well with writing a Conan book. On the flip side, The Last God at DC has a promising start with a similar but completely original story.

Gerry Duggan returns to Yancy Street for Fantastic Four: Grimm Noir – a noir-ish showdown between the Thing and D’Spayre. And for the occassion, he’s bringing along his friend and Savage Sword of Conan collaborator Ron Garney.

“Ron Garney’s a tour de force storyteller on this oversized issue starring the ever loving Thing,” Duggan said in an announcement. “It’s one of those collaborations I’ll always be proud of, and I know will stand the test of time as a classic Ben Grimm tale. Pre-order it, or wait for reprints.”

Fantastic Four: Grimm Noir is the third in a series of quarterly FF one-shots by Marvel, following 4 Yancy Street (also written by Duggan) and Negative Zone.

The life of a teenaged superhero is never easy, but it’s about to get a lot harder for the young vigilantes of the Marvel Universe. March’s Outlawed one-shot introduces a new status quo that has the government cracking down on superheroes under the age of 21, and these events will have repercussions across the publisher’s entire line. Written by Eve L. Ewing with art by Kim Jacinto, colorist Espen Grundetjern, and letterer Clayton Cowles, Outlawed sees the country rocked by a tragedy involving the Champions that compels politicians to take drastic actions. The set-up is reminiscent of 2006’s Civil War, which similarly began with a tragedy surrounding a young superhero team leading to federal restrictions on superheroes.

Although I still prefer the Jacket costume. Johnson’s costume is much better than the original. It is darker. If Jessica is supposed to be a spy, a bright red and yellow costume is not great. Plus, he gets rid of ,imo, that godawful arrow shaped abdomen part.

Marvel this week put the first 15 or so Captain Britain comics onto Unlimited. I’d read the first 8 issues as part of a treasured annual – but it was fascinating reading the later issues and seeing characters that turned up much later in the post Moore issues

  • #10521

I like the story of the selection of the creative team for the 1970s Captain Britain book. Claremont was born in London so was selected as the British expert even though he left and moved to the US when he was 3. Herb Trimpe was apparently living in Bristol for a little while, his bio stuff online doesn’t mention any time in the UK but I got that from an interview with Claremont so I’ve no reason to disbelieve him. So that was their ‘British’ creative team – two New Yorkers. :-)

In those days Marvel UK was largely run remotely out of the New York offices. As time went on they gave staff and control to a British office so by the 80s they were running pretty much independently and using UK talent. In ‘The Daredevils’ comic Alan Moore wrote a lot of text pieces and reviews and is openly critical of the US offices and comics at times so it’s clear they weren’t bothering to even read what was coming out by then.

  • #12378

I did some Marvel Unlimited reading the other day. Based on some recommendations I tried Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man written by Tom Taylor and Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky . The recommendations were sound, these are really good books.

Marvel has been getting a slagging from many (including me a few times) because their strategy looks all over the place but there are still some really very good books in their roster outside the rejuvenated X-Men line.

FNSM tries to keep relevent to its title and focuses the stories on people around Peter and his close neighbourhood. It’s mainly pretty bright and breezy superhero fare but Taylor puts a bigger than usual emphasis on character work and has some really good dialogue which lifts it above other books.

Daredevil take an interesting look at the grey areas of the morality of being a vigilante beating people up for a hobby. Matt thinks he may have accidentally killed a petty thief he took down, a ‘by the book’ Chicago police officer is sent in by Mayor Fisk to take him down but he also hates Fisk and wants him taken down too. The beat police all support Daredevil, The Punisher comes in with his own twisted take etc. Really interesting, well crafted and great artwork too.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #12397

Kdarsky’s Daredevil is very good. Almost too bleak at times. Matt made his dutiful comeback before he was ready, and now has to cope with the repercussions. The colours gradually get more muted and the linework less clean and more scratchy as the story progresses. The artwork is great, Checchetto in particular. Bellaire’s use of colour to reflect moods later on in the run are subtly effective. Some of the cover art is sublime.

  • #12398

I’ll have to try that at some point. I still haven’t finished up Soule’s run though.

I’ve been re-reading Soule’s run tonight. I’ve just reached the Supersonic arc.

  • #12407

    Checchetto in particular

It’s been quite satisfying seeing him develop as an artist.  The stuff he was doing with Rucka on Punisher way back when was great, but what he’s gone on to do since then is something else.

  • #12409

He’s a good match for Daredevil. I liked what he did with Shattered Empire. He’s very cinematic whilst developing what can only be depicted in comic books.

  • #12411

If ever there was a product born with the tag of ‘should-have-been-shit’, the, I kid you not, this is the actual title, Star Wars: The Journey To The Last Jedi: Captain Phasma mini-series was it.

I know there are some fans of the old Marvel UK Knights of Pendragon series here. It’s being collected as part of Hachette’s partworks series of Marvel graphic novels. Probably not available from the usual online places but comic shops tend to stock those.

On sale today in comic shops and newsagents is Marvel: Graphic Novel Collection: Volume 212: Knights Of Pendragon, a must-have for Marvel UK fans, reprinting the first nine issues of the Knights of Pendragon, a stunning, ahead-of-its-time superhero and environmental thriller, first published way back in 1990.
