https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2019/oct/20/the-new-workwear-has-the-suit-finally-died

According to market analysts Kantar, sales of suits are down 7% year-on-year, ties are down 6% and blazers down 10%. Marks & Spencer is cutting back on its formalwear; Moss Bros, the suit specialist, has issued three recent profit warnings. Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs – whose bankers were once renowned for their Armani suits and Gucci loafers – announced a move to a “flexible dress code”. A company-wide memo cited the “changing nature of workplaces generally in favour of a more casual environment”. Other financial firms have since followed suit as the banks seek to emulate the “whatever” dress codes of the tech companies.
The suit in turn has become “a uniform for the power- less”, according to the American site Vox – only worn by people impelled to do so. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wears a suit when he testifies before Congress. When he is in control, he wears the Silicon Valley uniform of T-shirts and jeans – and don’t think that isn’t its own form of power-dressing, a way of saying: “I’m not going to play by your rules.” Boris Johnson’s calculatedly dishevelled appearance is another way of communicating that, too. However, it’s his special adviser, Dominic Cummings, whose dress is emblematic of the age, somehow – a contemptuous mish-mash of athleisure, dadwear and public school signifiers: the grey Levi’s hoodie with workshirt poking out; the hurriedly grabbed tote bag; the quilted gilet. This mess is what the people voted for, he seems to be saying. Deal with it.

It’s getting too warm for suits here, but to mix it up I’ll be wearing business attire tomorrow, with a denim jacket (denim jackets are actually pretty retro now).

I swear I have not been watching underwear videos of any description

Have you been specifically searching for videos of people with no underwear?

  • #43581

I know a good video about underwear.

  • #43583

I am now being recommended a video of “bra-less Liz Hurley”. Can youtube read what I’m posting on the carrier? B-)

  • #43584

    No, just your mind.

  • #43585

And now I’m getting bra adverts again. I swear, something really sinister is going on here.

  • #43586

Your definition of sinister and mine are very different.

  • #43587

He’s worn dresses before so it’s not that big a deal – they are pretty crap dresses though. He seems like a good chap.

“Last exit to nowhere” – I bought a t-shirt from them about a decade ago; decent quality.

I have lots of Last Exit t-shirts and hoodies. They’re pricey if you buy them outside a sale, but they’re good quality and the designs are smart.

It’s okay, David. This is a safe space. You don’t have to be ashamed. No one will judge you.

I always liked the idea behind it; nice niche references for things we love – my only purchase was their Godfather t-shirt which is just the Italian restaurant from the first film.

    I’d have liked a Goodfellas related t-shirt but I’m too self-conscious to wear a wig-shop t-shirt.

This site has a similar approach but goes beyond clothing – I’ve not (yet) bought from them though.

Looking to get some new boots. I pretty much just wear Chucks every day now, and it’d be nice to have some footwear variety – particularly if I can just slip them on instead of having to tie laces. These are maybe just on the right side of casual for me; I’d just need to make sure they’re the right size as looking through my old shoes they’re all sized (numbered) differently. It’d be pretty annoying to have to go through the returns process (naturally any shopping I’m doing nowadays is online).

Some 7 months later I actually got what appear to be these exact boots, using some Christmas gift cash I received, after heading out to the local major mall last weekend. Everyone’s masked per the new/recent mandate and it wasn’t too busy. These should last me a while. I also got an Oasis t-shirt (my first original logo T) from K-Mart using a gift voucher (another Christmas gift).

I like those boots but that shirt clearly says ƨiƨɒo.

It’s so when people see me running after their cars it says “oasis” in their rear-view mirror.

Man, sorry my mirror’s dirty; I blame the wife.

I like the boots as just an everyday dress-up/dress-down item. Easy to slip on if I need to just duck out for some milk or whatever.

Separately, as a follically challenged fellow I have re-embraced hats (big baseball cap guy in the 90s) not just for the aesthetic appeal but also to be sun-safe – the “railway hats” I wear most of the time (like the green one in that pic) are my favourites and while they’re not falling apart, they get a bit sweaty and start to fade; I’m going to try some fabric dye to rejuvenate them (as soon as I get the chance to go to the kind of shop that sells fabric dye).

  • #50367

You already have the boots, you might as well invest in a black leather cap and maybe some black leather chaps… and why not top it off with a fancy pair of crossed chains for the torso?

I have a black suede cap that was meant to be Lennon but looks more leather-daddy.

Perfect ‘fit for disposing of corpses in the rain late at night. Good luck, and try not to get caught!

Thanks. My cover story is it’s in preparation for the wet summer that’s expected, and I need to walk Kirby twice every day.

I’m hooked, just ordered some more items from the same shop, including a velour zip-up tracksuit top, and a corduroy bucket hat.

My new company is very into branded attire. They’ve just announced a branded woolly hat (they call it a “beanie” but it’s obviously a woolly hat) that I can grab if I want one.

To be honest, I’m bemused by the idea that I would want to walk around advertising my company on my head

Is this a thing that companies generally do? I mean, obviously a uniform is normal if on-duty in a service industry, but just randomly branded items to wear in your private life?

Is it Free? are you proud of your company? is it attractive? will it get you compliments?

  • #83855

I should work for UnderArmour, ’cause just about every bit of running gear I have (hats, gloves, shirts, shorts, leggings) has the UA logo on it. Except for my running shoes, which say Brooks.

It’s not unheard of (branded attire for staff), but like you said it’s more common in public facing roles. We had branded bags/satchels at my current workplace, but they were ordered in bulk for our reps who visit GPs; leftovers free to other non-visiting staff.

Do you work outdoors? Can you wear headwear in your workplace? A beanie is an odd choice.

Most of those look like woolly hats to me.

We used to call them “Benny hats” at school. Maybe “beanie” is a corruption of “Benny”?

Yes, not really, not especially, I doubt it.

We did too, I think that was just because Benny from ‘Crossroads’ always wore won.

  • #84187

Yes, it was the surprise popularity of Crossroads in the US during the 1970s that led to the American corruption of the “Benny” nickname (partly due to American viewers struggling with the Midlands accent), which is why they are referred to as “Beanie” hats in the US and worldwide today.

The origin of the word does seem to be uncertain. But I still don’t see why you wouldn’t call it what it is – a woolly hat.
