Has Benjamin Percy written anything good? Never heard of him.
He did some work at DC. I never read it but the review show I listened to highly rated his Green Arrow run.
Ohhh, X-Men are going to bankrupt me.
We’re seeing the typical Marvel behaviour of “this book is a success, let’s spam the market with related books”.
I was hoping Hickman’s run would be a bit easier to follow in terms of what books he’s doing – after X-Men #1 was a bit disappointing, I’m starting to consider ditching the run for now and catching up with it in trade where it’s easier to collate all the Hickman stuff together.
Maybe stay the course for a bit.
I don’t think this is any different from the Bat-books. Or to a lesser extent Spider-man, Iron Man, the Avengers, Justice league.
Part of the fun of X-men for me is that there are so many books that are different, and for a large portion of my life they were the only things i read. There’s usually around 8-10 titles historically, and i tend to follow around 4-5 of them and ditch in and out of a couple when the storylines go dull.
Judging by Marauders, this is more or less going to stay the approach. Hickman has a line-wide story that affects all titles, but you don’t need to read all titles to follow it. But, if you are obsessive, you probably will. That general approach isn’t uncommon to what Snyder does with the bat books either, as i understand it.
Usually with stuff like this there’s one core title and then everything else spins out of that (eg. the Morrison and Snyder runs on Batman).
With this, it seems like Hickman is doing a little bit here and a little bit there (I noticed he’s off New Mutants soon after it starts, and then he’s popping up doing this one-shot).
I get that Marvel wants me to read everything X-Men at the moment, but given that I’m only really interested in what Hickman is bringing to the table, all this chopping and changing makes it a pain to follow his stuff.
Once it starts to become a hassle to follow these books month to month, it feels easier to just drop them and wait for later collections to sort it all out (in the hope that they don’t mess them up).
I think probably X-men is the book to follow, but its too early to tell. Maybe you’re right and it will be all over the place.
I like all the announcements though. It works for me. X-men is interesting again!
Ohhh Adam Kubert on interiors, that’s enough for me to check it out at least… Haven’t seen him on interiors in a while now…
With this, it seems like Hickman is doing a little bit here and a little bit there (I noticed he’s off New Mutants soon after it starts, and then he’s popping up doing this one-shot).
Regarding New Mutants, it is actually two series in one really. After the opening arc, Hickman’s issues will deal with the space team, Brisson’s with Krakoa’s younger generation, and they are supposed to be alternating.
So is it every other issue or every other arc that Hickman will be writing?
So is it every other issue or every other arc that Hickman will be writing?
For now alternating issues, but down the road maybe arcs. The schedule, so far (just the other day they updated it switching two issues around):
Thanks, that helps.
It sounds like Hickman wants to make sure he’s writing issues with Bobby and Sam.
It sounds like Hickman wants to make sure he’s writing issues with Bobby and Sam.
He really seems to be a fan of the characters but I never liked how he wrote them in his run on Avengers. They always seemed more like dude bros than the Sam and Bobby I know.
I see that.
SoMe of my first comics were when Cannonball was a rookie x-man so there’s a part of me that likes the sheepish as shucks version. But the way Hickman writes Bobby and Sam seems fun and genuine, and I do think it seems like a natural evolution. I prefer Hickmans Bobby to the USAvengers version, who lacked heart and was just a flashy CEO.
Both characters are a far cry from whete they started though

Sam was the leader of X-Force once Cable left. He should be up there with Cyclops as far as leaders and strategists. Bobby was training under Gideon to become a no nonsense corporate raider type. He should be able to go toe to toe with any of the Hellfire Club as far as that goes. Hickman’s characterization seems more a step back to me.
.
I always loved this scene with Sam.
.
To be fair, most of the X-men gave held leadership positions. There’s a dozen different variations on each character. It’s a pick and choose continuity.
A couple of years after that (around 1996) Cannonball was training with the X-men his speech was very “Yes sir, please and thankyou”. He did have a great scene whete he fought gladiator (and won iirc) but it was undercut with thought bubbles of his insecurities.
Anyway, we don’t know how Hickman will write either going forward. It looks like Bobby will have some kind of leadership role going forward.

Hmm. Seems like someone else was making the point upthread to much derision.
Yes, that person was me, and you weren’t listening.

Also, because I’m a dick, I re read House of X #4 and #5 and you are SUCH A WRONG MCWRONGPANTS OMG.
Xavier is saying “No More” about letting Humans win, not about deaths. It’s pretty clear they’ve been stacks of resurrections before because they talk about the five working together and doing it previously.
Ohmigod Ronnie … OR SHOULD I SAY ‘WRONGIE’

The humans didn’t win though. The only thing they managed to do was kill the strike team who had accomplished their goal and Xavier was going to bring them right back if what you’re saying is correct. I mean dude’s weeping. Weeping about their “murder”. That seem like a guy who knows he’s going to resurrect them 5 minutes later? If it is, he’s seriously unhinged.
.
Yeah, he even says a little part of him dies EVERY. TIME. HE. DOES. IT.
This pod is well worth a listen guys. I’m a Patreon member and got an early look at it.

APOCALYPSE Turns Over a New Leaf – And Takes a New Name – in EXCALIBUR #1 Preview
Wait, so his name is “A” but as a funny symbol? Like Prince?
Will Xavier go back to “X”? Will Magneto insist on being called “M”? How will M be forced to return to “Monet”? OHMIGOD THE HICKMAN ERA IS SO INTERESTING
Nice.
Poor X-Force and Fallen Angels
Should have been A-Force
RE: Excalibur. I guess it wouldn’t be the X-Men if at least one character got mind-controlled
I felt like it lacked energy. First good, but not great, issue of the reboot
I enjoyed the issue, but I have a soft spot for the whole Captain Britain mythos.
So, the White Witch? Saturnyne? Roma? Someone new?
Is X-men going to double shipping from January onward, or just that month?
It is going to double ship staring december, so it seems to be the plan:
My tracking list if it helps anyone:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13nox6OMP3uRzVsEA0U14hr3BywLZzLnNpsoYmFuF7Qk/edit#gid=1289291639
There was a definite sense somewhere that many of these series would be finite but we wouldn’t know how long they were planned for in advance?
Current rumours point to 12 issues it seems.
I enjoyed the issue, but I have a soft spot for the whole Captain Britain mythos.
So do I which is why parts of it I didn’t enjoy. The 1980s update from Alan Moore on Captain Britain was that all that old Arthurian stuff had moved on, it was essentially a con. Otherworld was this futuristic place, Merlin appeared as an old bearded guy with a magic amulet to make Brian more comfortable using imagery he knew.
.
It seems that since the stories ported to Marvel US all the writers bar Claremont and Davis want to always bring all that back. Maybe there’s a story reason I missed why Morgana is living in a medieval castle and wearing those clothes.
.
Okay so I read Excalibur.

Score 10/10 Horny Polyamorous British Mutants
This is the review for the jerkface gambithaters:
1. Apocalypse needs to stop insisting being called stupid things.
2. Did Betsy go back to her old body on rebirth? Or did it happen in a previous run?
3. Jubilee has no reason to be here.
4. Whats the connection with Akkaba and Otherworld?
5. Witchbreed were what mutants were referred to as in 1602. It’s a nice touch.
6. My guess for the White Witch is Spiral, because her and Betsy have a history. The rational choice would probably be Saturnyne, or Roma, as stated.
7. Jamie Braddock should be interesting.
Betsys line to ‘Egg’ is great but legitimately Gambit is in all the best scenes in this book. Otherwise it’s pretty by the numbers and lacks anything impressive. The info pages seem like unnecessary aping of Hickman, more than anything.
6/10 British mutant bangfests.

Yes, I wrote a similar rant, before I read this. Futuristic Camelot is interesting. Otherworld being a nexus of worlds is interesting. Medieval King Arthur is generally boring and incorrect both historically and based on King Arthur myths. They would need to work hard to make it interesting and did not.
Also, that’s not CB amulet – I have those issues :)
However.
– Spider-verse has stolen the multiverse idea and seems to hold that now.
– having many realities conflicts with the storytelling of the many lives of Moira
– psylock’s psychic knife becoming a sword makes thematic sense with excalibur etc
I would have left otherworld alone. I generally trust hickman but this feels very meh
Morgan Le Fay has pretty much always been representative of Arthurian Britain.
I haven’t read Moore’s CB but i’ve read claremonts stories referencing it and they seem to be more about Sat-yr-9, etc, not Morgan Le Fay.
Morgan Le Fay is more or less an Avengers villain – there was even a big Busiek story in the 90s where the entire roster of Avengers to date were re imagined as arthurian versions.
I don’t know when she started being associated with Otherworld. It seems like some editor at some point realised the concepts were similar and just decided to proceed as though they happened in the same place.
I haven’t read Moore’s CB
This is a major mistake that needs to be rectified.
.
Moore’s CB is basically the only time he takes on a straight up superhero narrative without some kind of meta-commentary. I love it.
.
Also where Earth 616 was invented.
Yeah, I know it’s meant to be good.
But you guys seem to like it so much and i don’t want to lose my fringe-rebel status.

Just look at the pictures and watch Alan Davis grow. Its Hitch before Hitch.
2. Did Betsy go back to her old body on rebirth? Or did it happen in a previous run?
It happened during the Return of Wolverine series, in the Madripoor tie ins.
Akkaba
Clan Akkaba is connected to Apocalypse, formed from his descendants. They were first seen in the A vs Dracula mini I happened to read the other day.
Oh, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Le Fay put a medieval spell in the area, she likes to do that (the Busiek issues mentioned above, for example).
2. Did Betsy go back to her old body on rebirth? Or did it happen in a previous run?
Akkaba

Also, Abra Kedabra (or Avra Kedraba) are legit magic words in some occult traditions, often with spelling variations depending on the context of how they’re being used. Akkaba would fit in with that, and they’re occultists. It’s a nice way to add some verisimilitude as well.
I think Akkaba as a concept related to Apocalypss predates the Dracula mini by a fair bit, but it might be the first modern iteration of the cult like structure.
But my question is are they allied with Poccy or Otherworld? The dialogue is inconclusive. Or plus Poccy not being fully transparent with his fellow mutant horndogs?
<I think Akkaba as a concept related to Apocalypss predates the Dracula mini by a fair bit, but it might be the first modern iteration of the cult like structure.>
IIRC, Akkaba was also the name of the tribe where Apocalypse was born (Rise of A miniseries, I think), the modern Clan in Victorian times was formed exclusively by his descendants.
Yeah, that’s probably right.
I have vague memories of Akkaba being mentioned during various X-men and Cable runs during the 90s, for one reason or another.
Side note – people should be more pissed off at apocalypse. He’s turned half of them into Horsemen, Betsy and Gambit included.
It’s the Krakoa Chill’n’Bang effect Tim: less aggro, more shagging.
To be fair, Gambit volunteered to become a Horseman.
Wasn’t Psylocke more of Evil Archangel’s doing? .-A-. is indirectly responsable if that was the case.
New Mutants Preview:
SNEAK PEEK: EXCLUSIVE Preview of NEW MUTANTS #1: SPACE…A New Mutant Frontier…
Bunch of Apocalypse Apologists if you ask me
Yeah sorry I ain’t calling Apocalypse “A” ’cause that’s stupid… also he already has a name… En Sabah Nur… use that u_u
Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief because he doesn’t want to be called ‘A’
He wants to be called ‘.-A-.’
Ah well then, in that case he can also kiss my ‘.-A-.’ss
His lips are probably cold. I think it would be uncomfortable.
X-Force preview
Star Trek Discovery confirmed that Klingons have two dicks.
.
Diphallia must be a thing now.
I expect the double-dick Logan premise to be the chief focus of the new Wolverine book.
Otherwise what is even the point
Warlock confirms that Wolverine does have two penises. A little one he pees with and he big one he brushes Jean’s teeth with.

It’s Mutants Banging Each Other day!
What will the adventures of the younger horny mutants bring?
We shall see soon enough!
“bang” indeed.
I’ve gone back on Marvel Unlimited and read some of the Uncanny X-Men run leading up to this, starting with Disassembled. It’s not that great to be honest but it does set up some more context behind a radical rethink of how they operate. The anti-mutant stuff is quite ramped up in it with hate rallies and extermination squads etc.
.
Knowing what comes later I assume Hickman had some say in taking Blindfold off the table.
Yes; and Cullen Bunn has said Hickman was already pulling strings during his run.
Blindfold will be much harder to justify (in-story) not resurrecting than Destiny.
X-Force #1.
That was not quite what I was expecting (and not just the cliffhanger). Unlike the other 2 spinoff books so far it felt less like a separate team and more a continuation of the main book. It’s also the one I’ve liked best so far, Percy I’ve heard good stuff about but not read before, did a good job. Using Black Tom as a conduit to Krakoa was something I hadn’t though of but of course makes perfect sense.
The ending to New Mutants #1 teased the return of the best new character of the last few years, Murd Blurdock from Al Ewing and Adam Gorham’s Rocket!
That… is genius
I didn’t get that it was a Daredevil reference until “Elektra” showed up…
…I’m getting old.
New Mutants was pretty fun, IMO. X-Force was really cool in a lot of ways, I liked how it’s more of a dark underbelly to the… dark… overbelly of the mainline books? Plus, the CIA guys basically being Reavers was a very nice touch.
double post
My preliminary thoughts:
New Mutants:
1. Is Bobby banging Dani?
2. Is Doug banging Krakoa?
3. If so will Warlock be jealous?
4. Corsair is banging Hepzibah, right?
5. Who is Mondo banging?
6. Space Lawyer! Lawyering in Space!
Verdict: 8/10 Horny Young Space Mutants
X-Force:
1. Hmmm… very secretive banging.
2. Black Tom is … also banging Krakoa?
3. Who is Healer. I hope he’s not banging anyone because ewww very old man banging.
4. Poor Colossus. I hope he and Kitty are still banging.
5. Domino clearly hasn’t been doing much banging for at least a week … OR HAS SHE?
Verdict: 8/10 Horny Super Secret Mutants
Fine
Less horny comments might be:
1. X-force really did seem more central to Hickmans story then anything before. The ending is an obvious fake out, but I hope it’s not as obvious as what I think it is.
2. More than any book, I’m not sure what the central premise is. This seemed mostly about setting up and explaining the islands defences.
3. The opening with Domino was intriguing and I’m genuinely curious as to what’s going on.
New Mutants.
1. Wow, Corsairs a dick.
2. This was fun.
3. Uhh.. surely no one really thinks Sam will leave his family?
4. Murd Blurdock is going to be amazing.
These two books have been my favourite so far, aside from X-men. Marauders was okay, but Excalibur wasn’t very good despite all the obvious Rogue and Gambit banging. I don’t have particularly high hopes for Fallen Angels, but we’ll see.
My preliminary thoughts:
New Mutants:
4. Corsair is banging Hepzibah, right?
They’ve been a couple for as long as I’ve been reading X-Men
3. Who is Healer. I hope he’s not banging anyone because ewww very old man banging.
He’s a Morlock, was first mentioned in the arc where they were introduced, survived the Mutant Massacre and later died restoring Caliban to health.
And old people can and do have sex and it’s just as gross/beautiful as anyone else, you know
These young kids and not knowing who the Morlock Healer is, it’s a disgrace.
It does beg a few questions though about the resurrection stuff because he really died a very long time ago, Uncanny X-Men #291 back in 1992. I think that’s the furthest back of any of the revived characters we’ve seen so the storing of DNA and minds goes pretty far back. Of course Xavier couldn’t do anything about it until they found Goldballs who is the most recent character in the resurrection gang and in my mind the most important.
No. Horny Polyamorous Mutant Island is pretty much a green light for everything except very old man banging.
Very old part-mutant part-celestial-infused-being banging is okay BUT ONLY THEN.
New Mutants didn’t really work for me. It felt like a bit of a mess, often quite disjointed and without any real hook into the characters or the story, which was all over the place.
I’m assuming this is largely trading on the nostalgic appeal, with the old cast of a well-loved title and an artist who seems to be consciously apeing Bill Sienkiewicz. I can understand it doing well with long-term X-fans but it isn’t for me.
So after reading the two Hickman #1 issues I think I’m at the point where I’m probably going to drop his X-Men stuff for now, with a view to maybe coming back to it later if I hear good things.
HoX/PoX was largely brilliant and got me very excited about his run, but these two debut issues of the new titles have been a big step down from that – and I assume Hickman is now not going to be in any hurry to push forward with some of HoXPoX’s big ideas, let alone pay them off any time soon. Which was a big part of the draw for me.
A shame as HoXPoX made me think this could end up being another great run on the same level as Morrison’s.

Sadly I loved it, for all those reasons.
It’s not sad, I’m the same myself with other artists and eras of other characters where there’s a nostalgic element.
I just don’t have that connection here personally, so the draw isn’t there. I can understand why it is for other readers though.
You might consider picking up X-force. It’s the only title that features Xavier as a character and set on Krakoa proper.
It does seem like the major leaps in Hickmans story aren’t likely to happen in the normal monthlies, excepting probably X-men.

New Mutants A+ everyone on point.
X-Force. A weird one for me a good x-men story but I could do without the final page reveal. That’s happened before and I’m not interested in the twists to come from it. Also having boom boom in her hot pink and yellow outfit design seems a bit out of place as we see her in a different look for the new mutants cover preview.
It’s an alright x/men story but it isn’t X-Force. Aside from Domino (and wolvy I guess) none of them have that x-Force edge. They certainly aren’t my xforce so I’m probably dropping this one immediately.
X-force doesn’t seem to be playing with the old tropes of the title. At least not for issue 1.
It’s more or less a new concept with an old title, like Mauraders and Fallen Angels seem to be.
New Mutants was kind of a letdown after the great first scene with Wolfsbane. Brisson’s dialogue really doesn’t work for me and the characterizations are weird in a way that doesn’t feel intentional like it is in HoX/PoX/X-Men. I’ll give it one more issue.
I feel like no one likes the X-men as much me and Mike
They’re my favorite superheroes. I don’t think I’ll be able to enjoy the MCU movies because I’m too close to the characters. House of X was great though. I haven’t read an x-book like it, and I’ve spent a good chunk of the year rereading a ton of old X-books.
Yeah, I feel like HoX/PoX maybe set the standard so high that it was always going to be difficult for the books following it to live up to it.
New Mutants was definitely the weakest of the number ones for me so far as well. Just didn’t really feel like there was much substance there.
