Some very sad news from George Perez today.

The word Legend is tossed around pretty liberally but I think it’s fair to say that he is a true comics legend. This is a great shame to hear.

    Bollocks.  That is terrible news.

    Fucking hell.

The man is a comic book god.

I wish him peace and painlessness.

Just read it over twitter, in shock really. So sad.

Even in such distressing circumstances he’s a classy guy. What an absolute legend.

Yeah, that is quite the post by Perez.

  • #80377

Yeah. That’s horrible news. I always enjoyed his work, although I’m probably a Jonny Come Lately as far as he’s concerned. Only really became aware of him on the Heroes Return Avengers with Busiek and then the phenomenal JLA/ Avengers shortly thereafter. I wish him and his family the best over the next few months. I admire his positivity and determination to go out smiling.

As a kid reading the Avengers in the 1970s, I always loved the way he drew Beast.

This was a gut punch for me. New Teen Titans was part of my childhood:

The cover to JLA-Avengers #3 will probably never be equalled.

It has over 100 characters and it works brilliantly.  Nothing is cluttered, it is a masterpiece  of design, of placing and imagination.

Such a massive part of my comic reading with his Justice Leagues being some of my earliest comics.  Absolute class act.

    Sad news.

It’s also the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Perez. An amazing piece of work.

It was sad enough just hearing this news earlier today; but after reading his full post, there are tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. What a great artist, and what a greater loss to the comics community.

    Really sad news.

  • #80422

Very sad. Great artist and human being.

I remember his Justice Leagues fondly, and New Teen Titans, Crisis, the list goes on.

Weird, but I was just thinking of JLA/Avengers the other day. I hope they reprint the HC soon.

this is what I remember most about George Perez. He is a master of the group shot

    Yep, that’s the one – JLA-Avengers#3

but the amazing thing is he did so many of them. I heard that he enjoyed doing them and asked to do those huge groups shots.

Then there is the ought to be immortal panel of:

“Ultron, we would have words with thee.”

That must have been a hard choice to make. I hope he’s able to spend his remaining time in relative comfort and with dignity.

My mom made the same choice last year. She was able to be at home in her own bed. The company handling her Hospice provided pain meds and nurses to come in and help. It was very dignified and she was in her own apartment with her children nearby.

It’s an interesting aspect Mike shared with me a while back. Qualified doctors are 3 times as likely to accept palliative care over treatment in cases like this than the general public. NICE which is the group that authorises medicines in the UK public health system has faced criticism for not signing off cancer treatments but in an example they raised one cost several hundred thousand dollars with an average result of adding 90 days to a life and a not very comfortable 90 days with pain and side effects.

It’s hard to admit we don’t always have a solution, that some things are beyond ‘willpower’ and current science.

Perez blew me away with that FB post, such a selfless response to his situation.

Oh. I thought it said “awarded”, which would have been a cool news story.

Instead, it’s a random internet petition with less than 500 signatures in a week.

  • #80831

Yup, nothing story again. Although it at least has more chance of success than the petition for a knighthood for Alan Moore who would have turned it down if offered anyway.

Yep.  Just because you knew it was going to happen doesn’t make it easier.

Legendary artist, whose ability to cram figures onto a single page without any loss of clarity is unlikely to be equalled.

Then there’s his exit…. such sad news.

RIP, George was one of the artists whose drawings are tied with my childhood/teen reading.

  • #91264

Even though we knew it was coming, this is still tragic.

  • #91267

    Shit.

Time to re-read The Judas Contract and many, many other great stories from multiple decades.

    RIP

I just signed up to DC Infinite. I never read more than little bit here and there of the Perez and Wolfman Teen Titans run (I mostly got into Perez with his Wonder Woman run where I read it all). Maybe a good time to read it now.

    Sad news.

I’ll never forget meeting the guy, some ten years ago now. Lovely guy- I remember I managed to make his eyes roll – I might have been gushing about his COIE work and mentioned how his rendition of Supergirl is the one I always think of when I picture the character. That earned me a well-deserved “oh brother” look. He was still nice enough to draw and sign a Supergirl character for me and let me take some pictures.  Might have to go fish that out and look at it now.

I met George in 2012 at C2e2. Jim invited me to Chicago and Vic(from the SFL days) got us passes to help him at his booth. We got in early and I made a beeline for George’s booth. He was so nice and did a sketch of Donna Troy for me on the inside cover of Legion of 3 worlds TPB. I’ll never forget it.

DC celebrates the late, great artist George Pérez with poster portfolio this November – Newsarama

The oversized greatness of the legendary George Pérez gets an oversized poster collection

In November, DC will release an oversized special celebrating the life of legendary artist George Pérez, who died in May at age 67. DC Poster Portfolio: George Pérez will feature 42 pages of covers, including art from The New Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and more.

Per the solicit text, this poster collection presents “a fraction of the work by this beloved illustrator whose art has touched the hearts of comics fans around the world for generations.”

Pérez got his start in comics in the early ’70s at Marvel Comics, where he penciled back-up stories in titles like Astonishing Tales and Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu. He co-created Puerto Rican superhero White Tiger with writer Bill Mantlo, and went on to become the regular Avengers artist where he co-created Taskmaster.

Following runs on major Marvel titles Fantastic Four and Inhumans, Pérez moved to DC, where he rose to prominence as the lead artist on Crisis on Infinite Earths. He would continue to work for both of the Big Two for the next several decades.

Pérez announced a terminal cancer diagnosis in December 2021 and his May 6 death was announced on his Facebook page(opens in new tab). The post said he passed away “peacefully at home with his wife [Carol] of 490 months and family by his side. He was not in pain and knew he was very, very loved.”

DC Poster Portfolio: George Pérez will be available November 1.
