“Inspired by this country” is true – at the Holocaust Museum (and other sources) reported that representatives from the Nazi party came from Germany and visited the South to learn more of the Jim Crow laws to adapt back home to the Jews. They drew the line at the one drop rule.

Schematics: It was artist Eliot R. Brown who originally drew the technical designs in 1981 Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Marvel came out with these “Fact File” magazines in the early 10’s and a few of the tech drawings were really just updates from Brown originals. I already posted the old Black Widow stingers and here is the Fact File one:

I always liked Douglas Adams’ turnaround of this in The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul (or Dirk Gentley’s Detective Agency, I don’t remember which). The logic was that the improbable meant that you know this is wrong; the impossible just means that there’s something you don’t know.
Man, I’ve got to reread those books one of these days.
