Anyway, there’s going to be a Keaton Batman who may or may not share a universe with an Affleck Batman and there’s a Pattinson Batman who has nothing to do with either of them? And none of them have anything to do with the Phoenix Joker?

You know what they need? A big event where they all get collapsed into one version in a single universe.

They could call it… “Calamity”… uh… “Predicament”… uh… give me a minute to work on it, I’m sure there’s a cool name they could use… :mail:

Yeah, in earlier years it might have been different and the runtime might have been a deal-breaker, but I think 2020 has been so hard on everyone that it’s toughened them up to the point where audiences can now just about endure four hours of Snyder Justice League.

Yeah you’re right, it could be good for theaters at this point, since 4 hours mean people get thirsty and/or hungry… specially with an intermission… oh well, let’s hope they release it. It’s not like they have anything to lose (except there might be legal issues with a theatrical release).

Also, sorry I was gonna go look for this picture that explains the 214 thing, but I got distracted and forgot… anyhow… it’s about this picture, if you look closely it says “Director’s cut – Running time: 214″… so yeah it was definetly meant to be the home release which I suppose they would then trim for theatrical, a-la BvS (which would’ve probably resulted in the same issues BvS had I suppose u_u).

They really don’t. Now films are distributed digitally it costs peanuts to actually distribute it, the cost now is all in making the actual film whis si money already spent.

In the past you’d have to make individual film reels for each screen costing around $3500 each and then pay to ship them (and they are really heavy). So to do a wide 4000 screen cinema release in the US would cost somewhere around $16m before you think of shipping overseas.

Now the estimate for providing digital distribution is $100 a screen so if only 20 people turn up paying $10 each you’ve broken even (20 because the cinema keeps half the ticket money on average).

It has been a real boon for small independent cinemas because in the old days they restricted the number of prints to save on cost and therefore gave the big movies to the biggest screens and the small ones would maybe only get them in a ‘second run’ when they were done with them. Now as long as they can get even a really small audience it pays for itself to send them day and date.

Now as long as they can get even a really small audience it pays for itself to send them day and date.

Well if the theaters in question are already functioning again, then yeah for sure it can only help… I doubt it’ll entince any theater to open up again for this, obviously.

Also, as l said, there might be some legal/contractual issues… the “snyder cut” is sort of a first of its kind (as far as I know), because it’s actually not a director’s cut but a new project altogether (despite it being basically but not quite a longer version of an already existing movie  ), and Snyder has said that he had to get the “approval” of pretty much every actor involved, he didn’t specify what was the approval for, but I’m guessing it’s got something to do with $$$ as usual.

But hey, hopefully it’s not too difficult to sort all of the legalities. I’m pretty sure all theaters are closed here right now since we’re in maximum alert at the moment, but hey if by march it looks safe, I wouldn’t mind going to an imax screening… at least, with this being such a hated project, there’s a better chance of less people showing up… so yay? =P

It’s nonsense. The actual news in the article is old news:

A previous THR report, stated that the 68-year-old could appear in several films in a “Nick Fury” type role.

He’s one Batman in the multiverse, and he may come up in more than one movie. Which is cool. But that headline is complete nonsense.

I have to say though, it’s kind of a shame that Snyder blew all his Dark Knight Returns on what was supposed to be his second Superman movie. At this point, he could probably properly have adapted DKR with Keaton as Bruce, and how awesome would that be?

Between Dark Knight Rises and the version seen in the Snyder movies it feels like the older jaded Batman has become the norm in the DC movies.

I’m quite looking forward to seeing a younger, in-his-prime version again with The Batman.

I bloody hope so… I mean, undermining Snyder is to be expected (still dumb, but expected), they’ve been doing that shit since BvS… but undermining Reeves is just shooting themselves on the foot, and I honestly wouldn’t put it past them to say some stupid shit like that to try (again) to get away from the Snyderverse… they’re just that relentless and dense.

Martha gets shot, Thomas attacks the mugger who drops the gun, but when Bruce picks it up Thomas takes it from him and gives Bruce a disappointing look before shooting himself.

It is the first of the universe’s 42 films to star the team of heroes known as the Justice Society, which in the comics first appeared during the second World War. Katic and Bomer first worked in the DC Universe Movies series together in 2013’s Superman: Unbound.

I guess Snyder has harnessed the whole Snyder Cut thing as a vehicle for self-promotion so needs to keep it going for as long as possible. I presume the whole “restore the Snyder universe” thing (or whatever it was) is about milking this further once the Justice League tv show has come out.

I guess Snyder has harnessed the whole Snyder Cut thing as a vehicle for self-promotion so needs to keep it going for as long as possible.

Yeah, I mean, respect for Snyder for how he’s been making this whole thing work out for him, but… it’s actually a shame that I currently have no interest in whatever he’s doing. I mean, I liked his cover version of Dawn of the Dead and ever since 300 he used to be a film-maker that I followed with interest and at the very least looked forward to the trailers to his movies. But now he’s doing his remix of a movie I have no interest in, and another zombie movie (which I also have no interest in), and apparently he’s still planning on doing the Ayn Rand thing…

It just feels like it’s going to be a looooong time until I am interested in another Snyder project again, and that’s a shame, as he’s a hell of a director when he’s got strong material to work with.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #49352

and apparently he’s still planning on doing the Ayn Rand thing…

Is he though? That whole Ayn Rand thing is more of an urban legend at this point… it seems more like an argument for people to shit on him because there’s been zero announcements or anything on such a movie… but who knows, maybe he’s still interested in that (I hope not ’cause I have zero interest in that either)

As for the zombie flick, meh… not excited either but whatever. At any rate it’s a Netflix movie so no one should expect too much… those Netflix movies don’t have a great track record… =/

I presume the whole “restore the Snyder universe” thing (or whatever it was) is about milking this further once the Justice League tv show has come out.

Not really, that’s just the fans’ doing. Snyder’s pretty much said he’s done and okay with it, but “who knows”, as in IF the snyder cut does well and IF WB makes him a good offer, he might consider, but at this point he’s basically said “that’s all”. But the fans (me included) want to see a Batlfeck project, Cavill continue as supes, etc, whether Snyder does anything else or not. But being realistic, it’s got almost no chance of happening… DC/WB are still very much against the whole “snyderverse” thing, for better or worse, thus it’s hard to see anything happening on that front except, again, IF the snyder cut really translated into a ton of money.

That’s tough to measure with an HBO Max miniseries, though, isn’t it? Obviously that’s the problem they’re also facing with WW84 and all those other movies they want to feed into their streaming service as well as the cinemas, but if they can’t figure out a way to seperately track people who only decided on an HBO Max subscription because of JL:SC, then they simply won’t know how much money it’ll have made them.

Of course the good thing is, it’s also hard to determine if it bombs entirely.

  • #49401

That’s tough to measure with an HBO Max miniseries, though, isn’t it

Absolutely. It’s pretty tricky with any streaming service because it’s nowhere near as black and white as someone deciding to buy a cinema ticket for a specific film. On the rumoured budget you’d need 5.3 million new subscribers coming in just for ZSJL, they are currently adding around 4m per quarter.

They can never measure that though so there’s no real way it can make a ‘ton of money’, streaming right now is all about speculating in building up a catalogue to keep that subscriber base growing.

Anyways, apparently he’s not doing it now, for those reasons you quoted… we’ll see if he does it in the future.

And since it’s Snyder, that’s what would happen… inevitably.

That’s tough to measure with an HBO Max miniseries, though, isn’t it?

It probably is, but I’m sure they have the tools to track at least some of it… but that’s the thing, if it bombs, we’ll never know ’cause they’ll just say “it did great”… we’ll only know if it does REALLY well because they’ll greenlight something, and even then, WB could always run interference…

Green Arrow and the Canaries Spinoff Not Moving Forward at The CW

The Canaries’ wings have been clipped.

Nearly a full year after Arrow, with its penultimate episode, aired the backdoor pilot for a spinoff that was to be titled Green Arrow and the Canaries, TVLine has learned that The CW is not moving forward with the offshoot.

The 100‘s prequel spinoff, meanwhile, is said to be still under consideration.

Starring Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, Arrow‘s planted spinoff pilot on Jan. 21, 2020 drew 890,000 viewers — a season high, excepting that season’s crossover episode — and a 0.3 rating, which turned out to be a tenth above what Arrow‘s series finale itself scored. The 2040-set episode earned an average TVLine reader grade of “B,” with 66 percent saying they would “absolutely” tune in if it got ordered to series.

In that planted pilot, Laurel Lance arrived in the year 2040 to recruit fellow Canary Dinah Drake and new Green Arrow Mia Smoak to fend off a threat to the timeline, one which would bring crime back to the otherwise serene Star City. But secretly, Laurel’s mission also involved keeping Mia from facilitating her city’s ruin, as foretold by future headlines.

Green Arrow and the Canaries would have, among other things, explained how the Dinah of 2020 wound up in the future, seeing as she was last seen speeding off on her motorcycle to fight crime in Metropolis. Arrowverse EP Marc Guggenheim told TVLine that scene from Arrow‘s series finale “does jibe” with what we saw in the spinoff pilot, “given the backstory that we’ve worked out for Dinah that we haven’t revealed to you yet.

“She doesn’t get on that motorcycle and … immediately end up in the future,” he added.

To name another mystery raised in Arrow‘s final two episodes: Who kidnapped Mia’s brother William at the end of the spinoff pilot? (And why didn’t Mia seem too concerned about his absence when Sara time-traveled to 2040 to fetch her for Oliver’s funeral?)

“There are burning questions,” Guggenheim affirmed during a Spring 2020 TVLine interview. “Certainly, the backdoor pilot ended with the cliffhanger of William’s abduction. And I do think we owe answers to a lot of those moments and questions.”

If Green Arrow and the Canaries didn’t get ordered to series, Guggenheim said at the time, “My instinct would be to try to answer those questions in the form of, like, a comic book tie-in — which is not to say that it couldn’t be done on the other shows.”

The trick with resolving such mysteries elsewhere in the Arrowverse is that “when you’re dealing with another time period… the only show that could handle that or really deal with those questions is Legends,” he noted. But even that “is a tricky bit of business, since the tonal mashup of Legends and Canaries is so very different.

“I look at these things as ‘quality problems,” Guggenheim concluded. “I love the fact that we now have a universe of shows that allows us to ask ourselves these questions and explore different things and answer questions from different shows, but we also have comic books as an outlet, as well.”

With the Canaries silenced, the Arrowverse moving forward includes The Flash (Season 7 premieres Feb. 23), Supergirl (which will be entering its final season), Legends of Tomorrow entering Season 6), Black Lightning (its final season premieres Feb. 8, while a Painkiller spinoff is in development), and the freshman offshoot Superman & Lois (premiering Feb. 23).

Fuck a building, bro. It’s the path of enlightenment.

Nick Spencer wrote a miniseries at Image several years ago called Forgetless and in it, there was a guy who fucked buildings as a stunt.

And this now made me remember that objectophilia is of course a real thing (because what sex thing isn’t?) and that there was a woman who married the Eiffel Tower:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2074301/Woman-with-objects-fetish-marries-Eiffel-Tower.html

Because that is just what some people do. I suppose it’s better than the thing with the poor dolphins.

Is it really his “chosen philosophy” though? I’ve never heard/read him say so, just that he’s interested in doing a Fountainhead adaptation. Does anyone have any concrete proof of this? Because all I’ve ever read is people (“critics”) claiming he is one, and those claims are rather flimsy to be honest.

Apart from how it’s hard to imagine that anyone would make it through the Fountainhead without that philosophical belief to drive you, I don’t think there’s more on the issue. And the quote makes it obvious that if he is an objectivist, he’s not about to tell the world.

And honestly I don’t agree with people who read that into his movies, or project it onto the Pa Kent stuff (he was just trying to protect his son, for Christ’s sake!). I honestly find it much easier to make that argument about Brad Bird, with Incredibles and Tomorrowland.

Does the Eiffel tower have any say in this?

Be great if, at the crucial point in the ceremony, it said “you know, I’m just not that into this.”

It’s Snyder. He didn’t even understand Watchmen. He’s not the deepest thinker.

I don’t think that’s fair. I think he understood a lot of Watchmen perfectly fine, and adapted it very well. It’s just that some of the core aspects of the book go against every aesthetic instinct he has, and that’s why his version ultimately falls short.

I’ve never read (nor am I planing to) The Fountainhead, so I have no idea about that much… It’s just weird people calling him a hardcore Rand-ian just because he wants to do an adaptation of that book… I mean, shit, if a director is interested in doing a movie about nazis, are they automatically a nazi too? of course not. But eh whatever… double standards I guess…

Also, yeah I have no clue why people keep claiming that his movies are objectivist… that’s nonsense.

He’s no Alex Kurtzman, for sure…

Um, if a director wanted to, say, adapt Werner Beumelburg’s novel “Gruppe Bosemüller”, one of the novels that inspired the nazis early on about German soldiers fighting in WW I, and wanted to adapt it in the same spirit as that novel – then yeah, it’d be fair to call them a nazi. Of course it would be. Or Hans Grimm’s “Volk ohne Raum”, which inspired the nazis’ ideas about “Blut und Boden” and expansion. I mean, why the fuck would you want to film a book like that unless you’re a nazi?
(Or unless you wanted to subvert it and show the absurdity, but that’s obviously not Snyder’s intention as he stated.)

Oh, so is Fountainhead on that same level then? My understanding is that it was a fairly shitty story with Rand’s philosophy injected into it, but as far as I know objectivism isn’t really all that problematic as a philosophy, it’s just kinda dumb. But again, haven’t read any of those books so… whatevs, if I’m wrong I’m wrong… still though, it’d be nice if people waited to see what the fuck Snyder would do with it before judging him… for all we know it’d be just a slo-mo softcore porn with a shitload of pretty shots about buildings and dream sequences of samurai robots figthing with zombie dinosaurs…

  • #49704

I strongly recommend that people read The Fountainhead before passing judgment on the book. It is not an easy read, but it is worth the effort. I read it soon after graduating from college with an architectural degree because the lead character Roark was based at least partly on my favorite architect Frank Lloyd Wright; not because of any political or sociological beliefs.

I’m not saying I enjoyed the book, but I’m glad I read it, because it is a fascinating character study.

Well, yeah, it’s Rand’s philosophy in the form of a novel, and given now the novel seems to be fairly shitty, most people who still want to read it do so because they’re interested in objectivism. Or that was my general impression, but I haven’t read it either of course, and now Jerry who actually has done that has pulverised my argument. THANKS FOR THAT, JERRY!!! I kinda have to read at least a bit of the Fountainhead now, I suppose. Fucking Jerry.

To me, Snyder is still largely style over substance. His movies are pretty surface level and when he tried to go beyond that (see Sucker Punch) it can end up a nasty piece of crap. So I can buy that he doesn’t really understand The Fountainhead and just thought it had some cool shit in it. If Snyder were to ever find a solid writing partner, he could probably make some movies I actually like. Dawn of the Dead was the closest which, of course, had the James Gunn script.

I agree Chris, it’s a pity that a lot of directors that are gifted visually often have storytelling issues a really good script could solve.

I listened to an interview with Neill Blomkamp on the BBC where he confessed to it, saying he had issues understanding narrative. Ridley Scott’s movies go from to dud to classic mainly based on the script he picks up – they all look fantastic.

It’s really where my cynicism of the JL cut comes in, I have every faith it will look better, very little that it will make any more sense.

    THANKS FOR THAT, JERRY!!! I

    You’re welcome, pal.

One of my design professors knew of my love of Wright’s design philosophy and recommended the book to me and some of my classmates. As I say, I didn’t exactly like the book (Howard Roark’s relationship with his love interest Dominique was very uncomfortable) but I’m glad I read it; I may read it again now to see if my opinion of it has changed.

As an aside: after reading THE FOUNTAINHEAD, I picked up a used copy of one of Rand’s early novels ANTHEM, mainly because the copy was not expensive and was short and had a science fiction theme. After that one, I felt no urge to read any more of her writings; but if you want to dip your toes in the world philosophy of Ayn Rand, ANTHEM is less of a slog than FOUNTAINHEAD or ATLAS SHRUGGED.

Don’t agree that it’s bad at that point, but fair enough… like Gar says:

This is very much true… you can add Nolan and Guy Ritchie to that list, perhaps even Villeneuve. But hey, if I’m gonna watch a “style over substance” kind of movie, I’d rather watch a movie from those guys than say something like Fast & Furious or Transformers, which might have a ton of explosions and CGI action, but in the end they lack “style”.

    Also, for what it’s worth:

It’s really where my cynicism of the JL cut comes in, I have every faith it will look better, very little that it will make any more sense.

I’m perfectly fine with this… My main complain about Josstice League is how fuckin bad it looks. It’s truly one of the ugliest looking movies of the past decade, so fixing that much to me is more than enough (although removing the idiotic Whendon humour is pretty good too).

Oh interesting, thanks for sharing that, I didn’t know anyone in here had read it. :good:

Yes, I’ve heard it’s got some “uncomfortable” stuff between the main char and the love interest, but considering the author and the time it didn’t surprise me, still though, my point is that I never thought the book was some kind of mein kampf, and in the end whether one agrees with the philosophy or not (I do remember it’s a very pro-capitalism thing, so I’m not interested at all), that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something interesting in it that might be worth adapting, or at the very least it doesn’t mean a director interest in it makes him some kind of monster… it seems Oliver Stone was also interested in adapting it at some point, I don’t see anyone demonizing him for it.

    Another Interesting tidbit from wiki:

Den Uyl calls The Fountainhead a “philosophical novel”, meaning that it addresses philosophical ideas and offers a specific philosophical viewpoint about those ideas.[88] In the years following the publication of The Fountainhead, Rand developed a philosophical system that she called Objectivism. The Fountainhead does not contain this explicit philosophy,[89] and Rand did not write the novel primarily to convey philosophical ideas.[90] Nonetheless, Rand included three excerpts from the novel in For the New Intellectual, a 1961 collection of her writings that she described as an outline of Objectivism.[91] Peikoff used many quotes and ex

So it would seem the Fountainhead was the incubator for that whole Objectivism thing… interesting.

    Also, I forgot, but:

If Snyder were to ever find a solid writing partner, he could probably make some movies I actually like. Dawn of the Dead was the closest which, of course, had the James Gunn script.

Funny that you would mention that, I’ve seen countless of “youtube critics” claim that Snyder basically ignored Gunn’s script and that everything that’s wrong with the movie is Snyder’s fault… I guess they’re forgetting at that time Gunn was in his “edgy” phase, and was probably the time around when he said those things that got him in hot water a couple of years ago… but you know, doesn’t matter, it’s always Sndyer’s fault… xD

Which ties to that Kurtzman dig from earlier… I guess people didn’t really get the reference… but yeah I mean, Kurtzman was hired to “polish” Watchmen’s script (uncredited though), which was written by two other guys, so it would seem that a lot of people didn’t understand Watchmen… but hey sure, let’s blame everything on Snyder anyways =P

But in the end, even though I really don’t get all the animosity thrown his way, I suppose it’s still better to be polarizing and controversial than being a “who?” kind of guy… at least he’s got name recognition… that tends to be worth a lot in his business.

I am sure a Stone Fountainhead would’ve been along the lines of his Wall Street, showing everybody in the novel to be insufferable assholes.

Whereas Snyder does tend to adapt materials faithfully. I actually think that his Watchmen adaptation has a lot of strong points, and 300 is great as an adaptation. I wish he’d stuck to adapting stuff.

  • #49925

Alternatively you could have a far more enjoyable experience by listening to 2112 by Rush, which is based on Anthem.

Sure, but then again he deviates enough for people to hate him for what he changes… so…

Anyways, I don’t think he’ll do it anyways, he’s abandoned the project for now and who knows what’ll happen in a few years, so the point is moot. People should just stop saying his movies are objectivist when they’re clearly not.
