Anyway, there’s going to be a Keaton Batman who may or may not share a universe with an Affleck Batman and there’s a Pattinson Batman who has nothing to do with either of them? And none of them have anything to do with the Phoenix Joker?

You know what they need? A big event where they all get collapsed into one version in a single universe.

They could call it… “Calamity”… uh… “Predicament”… uh… give me a minute to work on it, I’m sure there’s a cool name they could use… :mail:

In fairness to DC, their television universe (aka Arrowverse) has been handled much better than anything Marvel has put on the small screen so far (with the exception of Legion, which really stands by itself). Credit due to Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and the others who have turned the Arrowverse into a popular subfranchise.

I don’t quite agree. Arrow was a solid show for a while, and so is a lot of the other DC TV stuff, but while Marvel’s shows had lower lows, they also had higher highs. No Arrowverse show got as good as DD season 1 or the two seasons of The Punisher – and you already mentioned Legion. And personally, I’d rank Agents of Shield over any of the Arrowverse shows, too (okay, so I’ve only really watched large chunks of Arrow and The Flash, but the bits and pieces I’ve seen from the other shows pretty much seem to be on that level). The only really, really fucking good DC show out there right now is Doom Patrol.

I’ve actually never watched any of the Arrowverse programs, other than one episode of the first season of Arrow (I was in a hotel room and had limited choices). I based my comment on two things: positive things that I’ve heard (or read) others say about the DC shows; and my personal experience with the Marvel shows that I have seen. While there are some standouts, for the most part they’ve been disappointing. Cloak and Dagger? The Inhumans? Iron Fist?

  • #42058

I watched the first couple of Flash episodes and they were fun and well made but the problem is in the age of ‘peak TV’ for me being okay is not really good enough.

There’s a whole range of highly rated TV shows I haven’t got around to yet and piling up in my ‘to watch’ queue.

In the 1980s if they shoved these DC  shows on network TV at tea time I’m sure I would have eaten them up, it’s not as if Street Hawk was a work of genius. Today? I know I’m never going to watch them.

Yeah, a combination of much-reduced free time and an abundance of quality content means I’m never going to watch these middling shows.

Yeah, completely agree on those and you can add Luke Cage, Defenders and Alias as far as I am concerned.

But Netflix Marvel at least produced three seasons of absolutely compelling must-see TV, while as Dave and Gar say, all of the Arrowverse shows are just okay. (I’m leaving both Legion and Doom Patrol out of it, as they are their own thing, and Agents of Shield because it’s somewhere in-between.) So my point is, I’d rather have three seasons of really great TV than fifty of mediocre stuff that I won’t watch anyway.

But either way, there’s no doubt the Marvel TV shows could’ve gone (way!) better and I do hope they really figure this out for the Disney+ shows. Chances are pretty good, with Feige having taken over.

MVP of Horror: Neil Gaiman promises that Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ TV series will be scary

    https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/neil-gaiman-sandman-tv-series-netflix-mvp-of-horror-194933937.html

  • #42200

Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment about his recently released career-spanning anthology, The Neil Gaiman Reader, Gaiman expresses amazement that a Sandman series is finally happening. “We started shooting about 10 days ago,” he says, indicating that the first episode will adapt the first issue of the comic, in which Morpheus is captured by a magician and spends decades locked in a glass cage. “I’ve been watching dailies, but nothing produced the profound, emotional reaction on me that watching a camera test of our Morpheus in his glass prison did. I saw him and said, ‘Oh, this is Sandman.” (Watch our video interview above.)

Going to be weird to actually have a Sandman TV series so soon. I’m hoping for it to be good, of course, but I suppose it has been so long that I won’t mind if it’s not great but just an okay show. I’m not really expecting it to capture the spirit of the book.

If I was to pick an Arrowverse show most like Agents of Shield I would pick Legends of Tomorrow. Both had crappy first seasons, got more freedom in their writing rooms and got better than the other shows around them. I would probably say the Arrowverse on a whole is better the Marvel TV on a whole. They did a much better job of creating a coherent universe than marvel. Marvel’s one crossover does not compare against the several Arrowverse crossovers. I also liked the leads on the Arrowverse shows better. Amell, Gustin, Benoist did a much better job than Ritter, Jones, and Colter.

Sooo I just found about this supposed “leaked image” from a couple of months ago…

It seems to be a Jim Lee story board of what would’ve been the end of Justice League part 1 (so, yes, before they even started shooting, meaning the original plans)

    The texts reads:

Five years later: Sand dunes. Smoldering solar pits. Gothic spires rising from the desert. Once, this was Gotham. Now, like the rest of the Earth, it belongs to Darkseid.Coming over the dune, post apocalyptic Batman (as seen in BvS), with a ragtag army of rebels – the surviving members of the Justice League walk over the rise of a dune to see the dilapidated Wayne Manor. Batman leads them. Flash drags what’s left of Cyborg behind him. Bruce looks up to the sky, grimly,“We need to get inside before night. He’s coming”

There’s a lot of interesting things to note about this. One is the fact that, even though none of this got shot (or at least in theory), given the recent announcements, it’s possible we might get some of this plot-line, in one way or another.

Secondly is how similar it is to IW & Endgame… much in the same way Civil War was very similar to BvS… If I was a bit nuttier I’d totally believe DC had a mole leaking info to Marvel… it’s like waaaaaaay too similar to be a coincidence…

Anyways, who knows if the image is legit, it certainly looks like a Jim Lee drawing a 100%, but you know, it could always be a very good fake… it’s not like there aren’t a ton of artists who’ve aped Lee over the years =P

Yes, I imagine the MCU would be desperate to copy the DC approach after failing to find a successful take of their own.

Black Lightning Spinoff Painkiller Starring Jordan Calloway Eyed at CW

The CW is popping Painkiller into development, ordering a planted spinoff pilot centered on Jordan Calloway‘s Black Lightning character.

The pilot will air as the seventh episode of Black Lightning‘s upcoming fourth season (which launches Monday, Feb. 8). Black Lightning EP Salim Akil will write and direct the installment.

Here’s the official logline of the offshoot: “Khalil Payne is a young man ridden with the guilt of his troubled past from his former life in Freeland City, where, as a super-enhanced killing machine known as Painkiller, he was both a member of Tobias Whale’s gang and a weapon of Agent Odell and the shadowy ASA. After attempting to bury the darker, devastatingly lethal Painkiller part of his persona, Khalil has distanced himself away from everyone he knows and loves in a new city, Akashic Valley, in order to find peace, but peace never comes easy for men with pasts like Khalil Payne and Painkiller. As his violent, destructive history crashes his idyllic new beginning, Khalil is thrusted back into action with a new mission — bring justice where he once gave out punishment — but to do that, he will first have to deal with and harness his darker side, Painkiller.”

Colloway joined Black Lightning in Season 1 in a recurring capacity, and has been a full-fledged series regular since Season 2.

What does this new planted spinoff within the Arrowverse mean for Arrow’s own prospective offshoot, Green Arrow and the Canaries (starring Katie Cassidy, Katherine McNamara and Juliana Harkavy?) Though TVLine hears that there are still “conversations” being had about Canaries’ future, the fact that the CW has yet to pull the trigger/bow string on the future-set spinoff — which aired its own planted pilot nearly 10 months ago — would not seem to bode well.

That’s a lot of people. I mean, you’re always going to get some people who don’t like an actor and feel entitled enough to sign a petition like this, but that’s a lot of people. Was she really bad in the first movie?

  • #43122

She was fine. It was a bit of a thankless underwritten female role (shocking for a superhero movie, I know).

I don’t remember these kinds of petitions ever making a difference to filmmakers’ choices, and I doubt they’re about to start now, especially given that this campaign was linked to supporters of Depp who recently lost his libel litigation around his relationship with Heard.

(Also, how many actual people do you think are responsible for those million signatures?)

It seems like she’s been treated fairly shabbily in general, and this petition seems like an extension of that. I’m not really sure what people think she’s done to deserve it.

Regardless, it’s an ugly look to be putting the boot in like this and demanding she lose a movie role simply because “the fans” don’t like her.

  • #43185

She was apparently arrested back in ’09 for abusing her then-domestic partner.

  • #43188

Recasting someone because the fans don’t care for them is fine, although it did rob us of the sight of Katie Holmes trying to keep up with everyone in The Dark Knight.

  • #43245

The verdict came back last week, Depp lost. It wasn’t her legal battle either, he sued The Sun newspaper for calling him a wife-beater.

No, that’s one legal battle, I’m pretty sure there’s another one of Depp vs Heard directly, not vs the newspaper.

It seems like she’s been treated fairly shabbily in general, and this petition seems like an extension of that. I’m not really sure what people think she’s done to deserve it.

Ermmm… well there’s plenty enough info out there on this whole mess… but basically Heard went all “metoo” on Depp and accused him of domestic violence and of hitting her and whatnot, which lead to Depp losing work and yes being called a wife-beater and all that… and it turns out that Amber Heard was actually the abuser in the relationship, verbally, psychologically and physically. Depp might’ve done stuff too dor all we know, but the audios that were leaked didn’t do Heard any favours. Plus there’s enough testimonials out there about how she’s basically a raging psycho.

So in short, no, she hasn’t been treated shabbily at all, quite the opposite, hence the petition.

  • #43249

Was she really bad in the first movie?

Yeah she was. Like Dave says, it’s an underwritten role but that goes for a lot of roles in Aquaman (well, all of them really) but she really brought nothing to it. The thing that stood out most to me about the movie was how little chemistry she and Momoa had; the dialogue was always going for a Romancing-the-Stone/Indiana-Jones-like sparky jibing sexual energy between them and there was just nothing there. It’s not just her fault, but it become clear that she didn’t do the movie any favours.

That being said, the petition is kind of a shitty thing to do to someone and should just go away. Rumours are that in the next movie, they’ll have more female roles to balance things out (and Kidman kind of did that in the last one, too) and that’s probably a good way to go with this.

  • #43255

well there’s plenty enough info out there on this whole mess

There is, and it sounds like you’re not up to date on the latest.

Depp lost the UK libel action, effectively finding him to be an abusive partner, and the parallel US case has always been seen as a much harder case to win due to the differences in local defamation laws.

Heard has been pretty clear that the Depp camp is behind a lot of the public attacks on her (including this petition) as a way to undermine her publicly.

I don’t really have a horse in this race – I’ve barely heard of Amber Heard other than in the contexts discussed here – but it’s not a great look for people to be ganging up on someone in this way, in this context, for no real reason other than they’re caught up in some celebrity legal soap opera that they probably don’t fully understand.

The news about the judge that might have a bias (a connection to Heard’s lawyer) and maybe should’ve recused himself, but judged in favour of Heard? Yeah I know… we’ll see how all of that pans out. At any rate, it’s not to say that Depp is the victim here, neither of them are… they’re both clearly unwell people who were in a super toxic relationship… and it’s something that should’ve stayed private, but Heard decided to make a public thing about it.

Oh and the claims that Depp & co. are behind this campaign is bullshit, tbh. Depp has a ton of fans who’ve been following this shitfest for a while, so he doesn’t need to do any sort of campaigning.

As for myself, I honestly don’t care, but if one got fired the other should too… and if one keeps their job, the other should too. I’m a bit more pro-Depp here because heard’s clearly done a lot of dirty things in this case, like misusing the whole metoo thing to her advantage, which is crass as fuck and should have consequences. Oh and like JR pointed out, Heard’s got a history with domestic violence (against her ex, who was a woman, btw)… sooooo yeah, the whole “innocent victim” thing is a bit hard to swallow in her case.

David Fincher says Joker was ‘a betrayal of the mentally ill,’ slams major Hollywood studios

His point is more that he’s talking about why he’s mainly working for Netflix though.

“The reality of our current situation is that the five families” — a reference to the five Mafia organizations depicted in The Godfather — “don’t want to make anything that can’t make them a billion dollars,” Fincher continued. “None of them want to be in the medium-priced challenging content business. And that cleaves off exactly the kind of movies I make. What the streamers are doing is providing a platform for the kind of cinema that actually reflects our culture and wrestles with big ideas: where things are, what people are anxious and unsure about. Those are the kinds of movies that would have been dead on arrival five years ago.”

Wonder Girl: The CW Developing Drama Series About Latina DC Superhero

The Arrowverse is making room for a potentially Wonder-ful new addition.

The CW is developing Wonder Girl, a one-hour drama about DC character Yara Flor, a Latina Dreamer who descends from an Amazonian warrior and a Brazilian river god, our sister site Deadline reports. Taking on the title of Wonder Girl, Yara uses her new powers to fight evil and save the world.

It’s worth noting that the Wonder Girl name has historically been given to a sidekick or younger version of Wonder Woman — which would bring The CW dangerously close to having its own completed Justice League.

Dailyn Rodriguez (Queen of the South) will write the project, which hails from Berlanti Productions.

If ordered to series, Wonder Girl would join a rapidly evolving list of Arrowverse shows currently airing on The CW. Though flagship show Arrow wrapped its eight-season run earlier this year, the network still has The Flash (returning for Season 7 in February), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (returning for Season 6 sometime in 2021), Supergirl (returning for its sixth and final season sometime in 2021), Batwoman (returning for Season 2 with a new leading lady in January), Stargirl (now a CW-exclusive series returning for Season 2 in 2021), and newcomer Superman & Lois (premiering in February).

I see more people when I go out for a walk, but that’s not the same as sitting indoors in close proximity to all of them for three hours, in the same room that has four different groups of the same size doing that every day.

When I saw Tenet, the theatre (third biggest screen in Stockholm, tied with a few others) had only me and my mate. It was glorious.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Nic Bishop Cast in Dr. Strangelove Homage

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has made an appointment with Dr. Strangelove, casting Body of Proof alum Nic Bishop in an homage to the dark 1964 feature comedy.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the English actor is set to guest-star on the CW series in a Season 6 riff on Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed satirization of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In the episode — which appears to be the upcoming season’s fourth, titled “Bay of Squids” — Nate (played by Nick Zano) and Zari (Tala Ashe) must infiltrate the Kennedy White House to stop Bishop’s warmongering General Kilgore from steering JFK to start WWIII when an alien begins wreaking havoc in Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1962.

Bishop’s character is likened to Dr. Strangelove‘s General Buck Turgidson, who was played by George C. Scott in the Kubrick film.

In addition to his aforementioned two-season run as Body of Proof‘s Peter Dunlop, Bishop’s many TV credits include, most recently, Apple TV+’s Truth Be Told, as well as Snowfall, Covert Affairs, Dominion and Home and Away. (I see that he also apparently is dating Legends star Jes Macallan, and thus would be within her safe COVID “bubble.”)

Legends of Tomorrow is among the CW series still awaiting a return date and which are penciled in for Spring 2021 or later.

When I saw Tenet, the theatre (third biggest screen in Stockholm, tied with a few others) had only me and my mate. It was glorious.

I went opening day and it was half full (technically full as they’d blocked out half the seats). It was with the context though at the time that we hadn’t registered a single Covid case in 100 days.

We had a resurgence in the last 6 weeks or so which by this weeks stats seem to be heading back down dramatically again.

Which is basically getting to the point that everyone will be making their own risk summary based on their circumstances at the time. Hence the decision not to bother in the US where cases are surging but there’s a good chance of getting decent business in large parts of Asia where something like Wonder Woman has a lot more commercial appeal than Tenet.

I’ve said all along they had to take a regional and phased approach to this. In Australasia we have pretty much no restrictions but the cinemas have nothing to show.

I imagine that piracy is a concern here, and might make it impractical to return to the kind of staggered global releases that used to be the norm.

If studios chose to release major films in some territories but hold back in others, I think you’d inevitably find them being shared around the globe in fairly short order. Which would then potentially undercut pretty severely the chances of making money from the movies when eventually released elsewhere.

I’m not sure about that serious undercutting. Cam-recorded movies are still shit for quality and I think the only real dent in the business is for movies released to blu-ray and on the web. I could very well be wrong though, as I’m sourcing this from personal experience and guy-guessing.

I can only relate to how it works for concert bootlegs. I have a number of Deep Purple bootlegs, but as soon as an official version of a bootlegged concert is released, I buy it even if I already have the boot. Every fan I know would do the same. Because even the best bootleg is lower fidelity than a properly mastered soundboard recording, and you want the best you can get.

They are, cam versions are barely watchable and the sound is even worse. When I first came here you’d go to the pirate DVD stalls and customers would ask if they were cam copies and hand them back and would rather wait for a decent one.

The biggest danger with piracy is actually the other way, if you offer on-demand (or DVD/Blu-Ray) then a perfect copy is up on the web in minutes. Wonder Woman 84 on HBO Max will flood the market but I did see they are planning the theatrical release, for where they are open, 2 weeks earlier.

There’s an element of adapting to unique circumstances all the way here. The standard window for home release for years now has been 90 days but Tenet got released in June and the DVD I believe won’t be out until end of December so they’ve doubled the gap.

I don’t think piracy is such a big factor with this type of releases because the people who are gonna download it, will download it no matter what, so that doesn’t change anything… the rest of the people, mostly fans, will want to watch it on the best format available… so if folks can go to the cinema, they will.

Also, while pirating still exists, it’s become quite harder over the past decade, so unless we’re talking about a physical pirate copy, I’m sure most people would rather just go to the movies or stream it legally and avoid the hassle.

In the case of Tenet, they would be wise to re-release it next year or even in 2022 when it’s a 100% safe again to go the cinemas, I’m sure a lot of people will want to watch it on a big screen.

Again though, this is all under the current model where the vast majority of high-profile movies are now day-and-date releases worldwide.

I think that a return to staggered releases would see people more readily turning to pirate copies before the movies appear in their territory, shitty camcorder-quality or not.

For Deep Purple, does it really make a difference?

Maybe kidding, but it’s still a good point :-) . We collect boots because of the performance, the sound quality is secondary. But we still want the best sound quality we can get. For a blockbuster movie where the impact of the visuals are arguably the key selling point and the plot is secondary, how much less desirable will a lo-fi bootleg be?

It would only be a temporary measure though if we’re imagining getting out the other side with vaccines. One that has to be weighed against the risk that if you hold releases indefinitely then many cinemas globally will shut, cutting off your long term income.

We’ve seen that the money being offered by streamers for the likes of Jams Bond falls way short of what theatrical release can bring in.

There’s also an unknown on what the gap is that would drive piracy of cam copies because truth be told while it’s closer than ever we don’t have true simultaneous release for all films. There are often gaps of a week or two, sometimes longer for some releases, and that seems to be deemed okay by the studios (and it seems is the intention with Wonder Woman).

DCTV is really pushing this diversity/international angle pretty hard. They have decades of IPs but they are developing shows based on characters less than 2 years old and very similar in description. What is the phrase?  “I’m just not the market they are looking for” or something.
