those 2 pictures look very different to me but yours does say Kirby. I did a google search on Darkseid by Kirby to get mine. Weird.

Dave’s Darkseid was from The Hunger Dogs. Kirby had left comics and had been working in animation for Hannah Barbara before he came back and did The Hunger Dogs in 1985, so his style had changed considerably by then – not for the better IMO.

I think the Snyder Darkseid looks terrible – his head is too narrow and the stone texture just looks ridiculous. Compare that to Thanos, and they’re leagues apart. I’d be willing to bet they don’t get a tenth of the performance out of him that Josh Brolin and the animators gave Thanos as well.

Her name is Natasha and she is the niece of John Henry Irons. She was last seen in the No Justice version of the Titans.

That’s cool. I didn’t kown STEEL started his own super-family a little bit, but she’s more like Supergirl.

I mean introduce the original character as a young woman who puts on a super-suit in honor of Superman, and everyone naturally assumes that there’s a man in the suit. That’s an interesting idea. Everyone thinks it’s a guy inspired by his favorite hero, when really the reveal is it’s this brave, super-smart young black woman. You could even have John Irons in there as her father or uncle who the bad guys think is STEEL and she almost (or does) gets him killed for it.

For the few minutes he’s gonna be in, that’s more than enough. Plus, I’ll post it again just because, but this looks very much fine to me… more than fine, really:

Steppenwolf looks amazing… there are some shots where you can see how his armour contracts and expands around his face (low quality though)… pretty neat:

Anyway, back to the movie design – I have no great love for Snyder but I honestly think this is a pretty decent stab at bringing the Kirby look to live-action.

Yeah, I think that’s a pretty cool Darkseid. I’d like to see the Darkseid scenes, too, even if I am less interested in the rest of the movie.

    Gotta go fast!

Oh, and their updated chart for upcoming projects:

That second Suicide Squad thing confused me, but that’s the videogame coming out at some point, same with the Gotham Knights logo. Didn’t know they were developping Zatanna or Batgirl… or Blue Beetle… wtf?

Also, weird they don’t showcase the Flash TV show, Black Lightning, LoT or Stargirl… are those ending or what?

Oh wait, they didn’t include Titans or Doom Patrol either… well I guess it’s WB being WB again… why wouldn’t they include all that stuff just to showcase all the stuff they have? I mean, they included SG, BW, S&L, Harley Quinn…

I don’t really understand the negativity over it (or Joker, recently). I did find Snyder’s other films fairly unsuccessful dramatically but not awful enough to really hate. BvS the ultimate edition is pretty hard to get through. It was interminably boring, but not that much worse than any number of blockbuster movies that don’t get as much hate. And there are many good moments just not enough satisfying scenes.

nevertheless, I am going to watch Justice League next week. Probably not all at once though. Took me three days to get through BvS.

Fair enough… good news is, it’s divided in 6 chapters, so at least it shouldn’t be so jarring taking a break :rose:

Surprised they’re talking about the humour though… I wonder how many theatrical cut jokes are in there… hope not too many, those were mostly crap.

    Final trailer:

Also, saw a spanish dude’s review… no spoilers, he was pretty happy with it. He confirmed lots of humour, lots of jokes from the theatrical (ugh, though I can guess which ones) and he basically had a couple of low points, one being the look of one particular character, the other pertaining Superman (no moustache though!)… and finally, the CGI is apprently VERY good and it all looks super impressive… so there ya go.

Oh one notable thing he said is he was surprised at how good Flash was, said he finally understood why they cast ezra miller for it… I hope that’s true.

It may just be that the Shaq film poisoned the well – even though in theory, he’s got a great amount of potential as essentially a guy as smart and capable as Tony Stark but he had been born to a working class African American family.

It may be though that being a massive flop is of benefit compared to being a mediocre disappointment. I mean I’m an avid comic book reader and not only have I not seen the Shaq Steel movie, I had completely forgotten it had ever existed until raised in this conversation.

You can imagine how much it permeates into the general public. I’d bet in a category of superhero movies it would be a ‘pointless answer’ on on the quiz show Pointless (which means zero out of a hundred people mention it).

  • #58035

Yeah I think it’s been long enough that they can go for a Steel reboot. Honestly, to me the question is what to do with that character, ’cause he offers a lot of flexibility and freedom (since he’s not super famous) and I don’t think it’d be a good idea to just make him a black guy in a steel superman costume, I think there’s a good chance to do A LOT more with him.

  • #58047

Watching the new trailer a second time, I caught the Joker cameo near the end; between that and the Green Lanterns, my level of interest has risen for the new version of the film.

The Guardian likes it: Zack Snyder’s Justice League review – four hours of geek-pleasing grandeur (4 out of 5 stars)

  • #58116

I’d say it’s pretty difficult to make a 4 hour movie that doesn’t feel overlong and self-indulgent to some extent. Good to see if getting some solid reviews, though. Lord knows it would have been hard to make something worse than the slop Whedon and WB put out 3 1/2 years ago. But as a fan of the property, I always want these movies to be good so hopefully I agree with the early reviews and end up being entertained.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #58124

It would’ve been nice to get the mini-series thing, but I guess it was too much of a hassle in terms of legalities… still though, it’s chaptered and you don’t need to watch it in one go… the problem is reviewers HAVE TO, if they want to get their reviews out early… so yeah, that kinda skews thing a little bit.

But at any rate “long and self indulgent” was the whole point of the project so…

Anyways, yeah it’s nice to see the high score it’s got, but it’s probably gonna plummet once it releases… doesn’t matter though, the only thing that matters is how well it does financially which is something we won’t know anyways, unless it’s good enough to make a sequel announcement I suppose.

Oh, also: “By the way, that much-discussed “we live in a society” line from the trailer? He says something else entirely.” hahaha, I knew it!!! cheeky Snyder!

I watched the Snyder Cut yesterday.

It was very, very pretty and way better than the Whedon version.

Not without faults though. In particular some of the voice-over work was awful, especially Gal Gadots, and music choices felt out of place and outright bad.

I’m not going to dive in hard to all the faults (or all the goods for that matter) but it was worth my time. The best of the DC Snyder movies.

Well I watched it… and regret terribly doing so, because fuckin Prime Video didn’t let me watch in HD (because of whatever random bullshit anti-recording requirements, like… who even understands that sort of shit… they’re completely crazy), so I had to watch a VERY shitty low definition version where everything looked pixelated and quite shitty… Did I say shitty?

Anyhow… I was planning on doing a second viewing, so I guess I’ll need to resort to torrenting it anyways to get a proper HD image… ffs… well the good news is that it was priced at the amazing price of 3 dollars here in Mexico, so no biggie… at least I didn’t waste my money (although I spoiled my first viewing) and now I can pirate it guilt-free =P

But seriously what the fuck is up with these rental services? No wonder people pirate things… u_u

Anyhow… it’s 6 am, so I ain’t gonna discuss it much, plus I’m waiting to see it with a good quality, but from what I could see, it was good… pretty much what was advertised… gotta say, that 4hrs runtime definetly flies by with ease, VERY well paced, which really surprised me. In the end, the important thing is that this actually feels like a fucking Justice League movie, and not like a rushed hodge podge of shit. That’s really all we wanted… mission accomplished, warts and all :good:

Last thing: Interesting that you can see how you could trim it down to the fabled 214 runtime (what was supposed to be the OG “snydercut”)… I don’t mind the extra fluff though, might as well put everything in at this point, but yeah, a 3.5 hrs long movie was definetly doable without losing anything.

I did not think the four hours flew by as such, but I wouldn’t say I was bored either.

The movie was very slow. Nowhere near “fast-paced”. I was constantly reminded of 300 in that there were many, many slow-motion scenes throughout the movie.

That isn’t criticism though, I thought that these slow-motion scenes were very good in giving the beautiful shots time to breath and I’m pretty sure this movie would have suffered terribly if you tried to speed things up.

First and foremost, this was a very, very beautiful movie.

To be fair, I said “well paced” not fast paced… because I agree, it wasn’t fast paced and thank god for that, I really appreciated the extra breathing room for the story to unfold… And yeah, slowmotion overkill, but that’s about as expected as the sun rising up in a ZS director’s cut.

Funny thing though, in the WW museum scene, instead of using slowmotion like how you’d expect, he actually sped her up, which reminded me of the awesome Faora scene in MoS. I really loved that… Man everyhting related to the amazons was really really good. Except that shitty “Kal-el no” bit that I was hopping was a whedon reshoot… xD

First and foremost, this was a very, very beautiful movie.

Man I can’t wait to see it properly… It really bummed me watching it at 480p… I shouldn’t have… u_u

  • #58432

So does Batman say “fuck” or what?

  • #58434

Yeah once, and cyborg once, and a bad guy once, and I think that’s it for the fucks… the batman one is part of the 2020 footage, and it’s not exactly “fuck”.

Actually now that I think about it, most of the “recent” footage is at the end, so yeah they really only shot like 5 minutes of new footage in 2020. The completely “new” things are by far the clunkiest things in the movie… there’s actually a couple of repurposed Cavill shots from MoS in there.

  • #58435

Actually now that I think about it, most of the “recent” footage is at the end, so yeah they really only shot like 5 minutes of new footage in 2020.

That’s less than I thought. Did most of the cost go on CGI stuff then?

  • #58436

Oh for sure… I’d say most of whatever they gave him went to finish the VFX and the sound FX probably, Junkie XL had to score 3.5 hours too… the new footage pertains to the “knightmare” bits in the movie and they’re really short, oh and the 2 MM bits which are super short too… I mean, he did say they only shot for 3 days, so that’s really not a lot…

Anyhow, unfortunately there’s still a lot of CGI shots that look iffy… but hey, considering it’s FOUR hours, and they only had 6-7 months to put this huge thing together, it’s actually not bad.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #58437

That’s less than I thought. Did most of the cost go on CGI stuff then?

    Probably.

The CGI was a bit uneven. Not like outright bad at any point, but some parts were clearly better than others.

The bad bits were, to me, sound mixing, some of the voice-overs and the ending. Not the ending of the main conflict, but there were too many endings going on after that. The epilogue was the one bit that could’ve been shortened to serve the movie better. The new Knightfall stuff at the very end was literally the worst part.

There was also a scene around the middle (?) where Martian Manhunter impersonates Martha Kent and that scene was just outright inexplicable, and it reminds me of some of the weird and disjointed storytelling antics of Snyders previous movies. Apart from that scene and the Knightfall scene at the end, I felt Snyder showed some decent restraint and focused on setting up a quite simple plot to look really spectacular. And succeeded in doing so. I’m pleasantly surprised.

To be fair, I said “well paced” not fast paced

What I said wasn’t in response to you as such, just a general observation. Action movies and superhero movies tend to be described as fast-paced every so often and this movie was quite the opposite and that’s worthy to take note of. It was slow-paced (and, as you say, well-paced).

Oops I haven’t been putting things in spoilers because I’m assuming you guys don’t give a fuck (since you’ve repeatedly said so), so tell me if I should… I’ll be extra vague for now cause I’m lazy =P

Anyhow, I completely agree with Anders, specially about the second bit he posted… weirdest part is he actually had that planned from the begining, because if I didn’t know better, I’d think it’s something he decided to add/change last minute… but no, it ain’t, and honestly, not only it doesn’t work AT ALL, both visually and in terms of plot, but it flat out diminished the scene right before it which I thought was a really nice and tender moment.

And about the Knightmare stuff… eh… I didn’t mind it too much, it wasn’t necessary AT ALL, and it kinda feels like a last FUCK YOU to WB, if I’m being honest… it was nice seeing a bit more of those characters though, so again, can’t complain too much… Plus it does set up some interesting stuff that they could delve into IF they decide they want to do something with it…

I don’t know how radically the new scenes reshape the story, but given that the basic outline is presumably going to be the same as the original version I’m not sure we have to worry as much about spoilers as we would with a brand new movie.

  • #58446

It’s the same outline yeah… that’s why I didn’t start a dedicated thread… it’s weird because on the one hand it is the same movie, yet on the other it’s sooo different…

But if you’re planning on watching it, there might be some bits you won’t want spoiled, not because they’re important plot points, but rather because they’re surprises, like how they dispose of Steppenwolf… which is VERY different in this one… or what Flash does in the final battle, which is certainly not pose like an asshole on the ground or push a truck around.

They really redeemed Barry in this one… he’s kinda the same, quirky and funny(ish), but he’s not a fuckin dumbass like in the other one… in this one he knows what he’s doing and boy, he can do some cool shit.

  • #58473

I watched it intermittently during the day today, basically between meetings I couldn’t get out of. I enjoyed it a lot. There were genuine tears of joy in my eyes a couple of times. It’s a slow burn movie. The action, when it comes, is very good, but in between those scenes it slows right down. But, the cast and the imagery keep it captivating throughout. It’s so much better than the theatrical version it’s incredible, but I doubt  it will do much to convert those who don’t like Snyder’s work or style.

The downside is that some of the CGI looks worse, of course, but eh… it’s overall okay… I wish it was better, much better, but it is what it is

That epilogue scene with the bat-tank, even though it’s super CGI-y, I don’t care, I fucking loved that crazy Snyder said “yeah fuck it, let’s put the Miller bat-tank in there too because why not”… at least it off-sets some of his other more questionable choices… but that’s what you get with a massive geek.

Anyways, anyone else planning on watching it?

Oh, I will definitely be watching it. Been looking forward to it for a long time, but have really gotten excited with the good press.
    Sunday afternoon is my plan.

Yelled out loud when it came up on the search (here in Canada it’s on Crave, but I didn’t know if it was the ‘upper tier’ that has a streaming catalog also (and some shows do go to that only), or what I get (just HBO Canada plus 3 Crave channels).
Sure enough it’s on those channels, meaning I’ll be able to record it and keep it on my PVR as long as I want.
But I will pre-order the Blu-Ray as soon as I can (May 25th)

I’m watching it, slowly like a TV show, I don’t have the patience to sit down for 4 hours for it so I’ll give my review in episodes too.

I saw the original version in the cinema 4 years ago or whenever it came out and haven’t seen it since so I don’t have any detailed memory of it. So far (an hour in) it seems much the same in content. It’s slower (an hour in and we still haven’t met all the cast) with the Snyder tone pumped up to 11. A bit pretentious in places, Lois Lane walks out of a coffee shop in slow motion in the rain to some emotive folk music, trying to add gravitas it doesn’t really deserve.

Saying that a film with this title may as well go full Snyder and a consistent tone like that is better than the kind of halfway house of the theatrical release (which I didn’t hate but thought was very bland).

I think a new bit was in Themyscira with the ‘weak’ line, if that was cut out of the Whedon version it was a mistake as it’s the best moment of that early section.

My new highlight of Snyder cut is the slow motion sesame seed falling from a burger bun.

I was too busy yesterday, and tonight is devoted to TFATWS; but I plan on watching the Snyder cut in spurts over the weekend.

There is some news that came out in the last month or so that suggests Whedon likes his women fearful

I’ll be watching it like gar, more like a TV show. Just don’t have 4 hours to dedicate to it all at once. But I’ll get through it eventually. Probably start on it this weekend.

I’ll find the time to watch it when my kid is here over the Easter Holidays. I’m sure he will enjoy it, too.

Wow, I didn’t think anything could potentially be worse than Avengers: Endgame and Zack Snyder says, “Hold my beer”.

It honestly sounds like a bad ripoff of Endgame. It’s probably better that it never got made because it would have always been compared to the more successful Avengers movies due to the similarities. I truly don’t think it would have come close to the financial success of Endgame.

I’ll probably watch an hour of it a day and get it all over with over a week…

I fucking love and adore Avengers: Endgame. I couldn’t give the first toss that the time travel logic makes no sense (it never does).

It is an amazing piece of fanservice where every moment they set up in advance and is deserved, when a character pops through a portal we like it because they set it up so the fans did.

If I feel a little down my therapy is playing Endgame audience reaction videos. It’s amazing.

I watched the first half of the Snyder cut. It’s definitely better than the theatrical cut so far, but it’s clear that it also didn’t need to be 4 hours long. And it certainly plays into Snyder’s tendency to go overboard with the slo-mo. Still, there’s no doubt it’s better even given that it’s overlong.

True – it’s a long movie that feels like a longer movie – like BvS Ultimate Edition – but, like that movie, it does meet the low bar of being better than the previous version. Still, it just seems like there is something kinda dumb about the premise.

The second half was more enjoyable than the first for me. No surprise since it’s when the team is together and stuff is happening. Ultimately, the Snyder Cut was a better product, but one I’m not likely to revisit. It’s just too long and is really just a lot of set up for another movie that’s never going to get made. Cool to see a version of what was initially planned, but beyond that it’s just kind of a tease.

One thing I was confused about, which may have just been me not paying enough attention, was that for some reason Steppenwolf and no one from Apokolips seemed to know Earth was the planet that fought back and defeated Darkseid all those years ago until Steppenwolf finds the anti-life equation etched into the ground. That was confusing considering he was there gathering the Mother Boxes which could only be there if it was the planet that beat Darkseid. Again, maybe I just missed something.

I’m also bummed that Andy Muschietti is the person they ultimately got to direct The Flash movie. IT Chapter 2 is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. The VFX in both chapters were so goofy and the creative choices he made were mostly terrible.

Yeah I was confused too, I think it’s a plothole, tbh, or maybe they didn’t explain things well (or left them unexplained to be explored in later movies). I mean, you could reason that while Earth was the first (even only) planet to resist Darkseid himself, since all that time and since he took the throne, one can assume his armies have been going around trying to conquer other worlds without him, so it’s possible other worlds have been defended since and many motherboxes have been lost throughout the ages. Otherwise, yeah it’s a plot hole…

Something curious is that Steppenwolf also says “no Lanterns, no Kryptonians here”, implying that there might be (or might have been at some point) Kryptonians in other worlds who have also defended those worlds… which makes sense considering the set up in MoS.

True. It’s not exactly a plot hole, but significant loose threads. First, did they bring up why there are no lanterns diagetically in the story? Obviously it was a big deal that WB forbid them in production but was it mentioned in the four hours (did I fast forward through it?).

Second, after MOS, there was a lot of talk about what happened to the Kryptonians in the ship Clark finds and activates. The original colonists. I believe Snyder mentioned maybe this was his idea for Supergirl. However, again, how long ago did Darkseid invade and would it have been around or after the Kryptonians arrived? Also, with all the friggin’ super people and gods on the Earth, would there have been some interaction? Coulda been interesting if Diana already knew what Kryptonians were since her mother would have personally known one or two 30,000 years ago.

So I watched it all in 4 hours. Don’t do that..

I really like Batfleck and Alfred, the big showdown at the end was so much better in this version but dear god I felt every second of that run time. There were points where I was laughing out loud at bits that were meant to be Very Cool and weren’t.

Snyder is kinda what would happen if Michael Bay though he was Very Smart. But he’s nowhere near as good a director as Bay.

I never want to see Jarred Leto in anything, ever.

So, it’s a better film but that’s not saying a whole lot. There might be a good film in here but fuck the slo mo and the sad music.
