The Legion fan community has already spent the last 24 hours being depressed over this

To answer Al : we don’t know anything else, except that it does appear to be true. We are hoping that the silver lining will be Bendis so busy with this that he doesn’t have time to write the comic.

WTF are they doing with the Batgirl thing??? So, she’s black and they’re using JK Simmon’s Gordon instead of Jeffrey Wright’s… fine. But that means it’s in the Snyderverse, right? Good. But they’re using Keaton?

    What the fuck DC??? Jeeeesus…

The rumour doing the rounds for awhile now, is that Keatons Batman will stay in the Snyder verse after The Flash. I guess to make up for losing Affleck.

As with everything DC movie related, it all sounds a bit slapped together at the last minute.

So reports have the Batman movie in theatres March 4 and streaming on HBO Max April 19.

Figure most will wait for streaming.

    Setting COVID aside for now:

It is something like tickets to a playoff sports game with bad seats in cold weather ( the players are like ants from where you sit) or watching it at home on a nice widescreen all cozy and comfy.

10 Best Animated Batman Movies, According To Ranker

  • #81774

    Regarding that trailer:

I feel like I have seen it all before ie. the gadgets, a hard edged Batman, some flirting with Catwoman, choreographed fights, a crazy sadistic terrorist villain. What else is new?

I would like to see a brains over brawn Batman, where he really figures things out and outsmarts everyone like a real detective.
It’s why I liked the ending of Christopher Reeves Superman 2 where he outsmarted the 3 villains into losing their powers.

But I will still be watching this.. on HBO Max.. F*ck the theatres.

Also … if anyone else notices… it is always the same light skinned black actresses and a few that are a little darker and on the cute side (like a Halle Berry type) that are getting all the roles when the studio and casting directors feel “woke”:

    Zendaya
    Zoe Kravitz
    Zoe Saldana
    Nathalee Emmanuel
    Etc…

I can see this being called “Blue Iron Spider” and I definitely could imagine this version of the Blue Beetle getting pitched to WB as DC’s answer to Miles Morales (though Reyes came out 5 years earlier). Also, this version of the character has major Tokusatsu elements – reminds me most of The Guyver. In fact, the character feels so much like something designed by a focus group trying to answer the question “what are the kids into these days” that it actually kinda hurts its chances.

I don’t know how to feel about Peacemaker… I’d find it more enjoyable if it wasn’t sooo tryhard at everything. Also: the intro is the definition of cringe… and yeah, I know it’s probably supposed to be, but again, too tryhard. Cena’s acting is surprisingly solid here though, so good for him.

You also have to consider what the contracts say and the goals of the new owner. The previous seasons also stream on Netflix so that becomes a factor.

While the shows do have their followings, they are some of the lowest rated shows on television. I don’t know what WB’s feelings on these shows are and if moving them to HBO Max is a cost effective decision for them. Flash is in Season 8 and is probably the most expensive one of them due to longevity. I think it would be a safe bet that if the various Arrow-verse series did get moved to HBO Max, budgets would probably get cut as would episode counts.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  • #82979

The Flash is in it’s final season. Legends of Tomorrow would probably be axed.

Superman and Lois? Batwoman? Don’t know. Could survive and just not reference the ‘Arrowverse’
But a move to HBO Max would be the beginning of the end.
S&L would be lucky to make season 4.

But these things take time, years. But hard to renew shows for next season when not sure ‘who wants what’.

It all depends a bit on the aims in streaming when it comes to the CW stuff. One of the things Netflix does better than the others is cover every quadrant.  If you want Korean drama, sci-fi, sitcom, anime, true crime docs, pre-school cartoons, trashy romance they have loads of it.

Other streamers like say Criterion or Britbox have specific audiences  (film nerd and expats/anglophiles) they want to target and could do fine that way.

HBO is of course the source of many great quality shows but they will need to decide which they want HBO Max to be. If they want to be a Netflix rival then they need that teen aimed material from the CW to continue, my kids will nag me to get a sub if they do, they won’t if it’s just Chernobyl and The Wire.

The Batman Movie’s 3 Hour Runtime Is Way Too Long (gizmodo.com)

The complaint that blockbuster movies nowadays are too long has been a standard gripe for awhile now, and so common that it’s become stale and annoying on its own. I want to acknowledge that I know this, and agree with this sentiment, and yet I am utterly powerless not to say Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s upcoming The Batman is too damn long. Like, way too long.

  • #83636

I for one am not in any way diheartened to learn Batman is 3 hours long. I don’t give a shit about movie runtimes as long as they’re contained in one sitting (as opposed to being split in two, which sometimes does infuriate me).

3 users thanked author for this post.
  • #83637

I don’t mind it being 3 hrs., but it does guarantee I’ll only watch it at home.

Long runtimes, plus commercials and trailers at the beginning have killed the theatre experience for me, and that was before Covid came along.

But then I’m just a cranky old man.
Maybe some won’t mind sitting that long, but I assume younger people.

I do “vote with my wallet” and still purchase some things on Blu-ray, this most likely one of them.

  • #83640

3 hours in a cinema doesn’t bother me much. And I’m not exactly young in any sense of the word (I’m 37.74). I don’t understand the problem. I mean, as long as I don’t drink (alcohol) before I go there, I won’t need to take a break from the movie to go out. I may be a bit ignorant, but I just don’t see the issue. Then again, I’m an avid film lover and will stay tuned to a movie from start to finish whatever happens along the way, as long as it’s not a heinously bad or unusually boring movie. Especially if it’s in the cinema.

Not saying people who have issues are wrong, I’m genuinenly curious about what’s off-putting about a movie that’s 3 hours long.

  • #83641

For me I can’t stay in one sitting position that long. When I start squirming in my seat I somehow make my back uncomfortable also, and then anything past the 2 hr mark is like an eternity.

It is worse when you’re thinking about previous experiences. Not everytime is excruciating, but then no guarantee what happens tonight. A check of the runtime and 2 1/2 hrs. could be a turnoff, and 3 hrs is just ‘No’!

Honestly, while I’m still not hyped about this movie, so I won’t go watch it on theaters either way, I am rather glad they’re giving their movies more leeway and whatever time they need for the movie to be the best it can be… If they’d done that a few years ago, maybe the DCCU wouldn’t be in the shit hole it is now.

Of course all of this will be moot if the movie ain’t that good, or if it still feels short, or if it feels padded, buuuut Reeves is a competent director at the very least, so that shouldn’t be too much of a worry. I suspect they’re allowing this to be 3hrs long just beacause it’s Batman and it’s gonna make a billion no matter what… I don’t expect them to be so lenient with other movies, although again, I hope they will be.

  • #83656

Yeah the truth is that there have been great movies that are 3hrs and terrible ones that are 90 minutes.

I do think that it could affect cinema attendance though. Not just the numb-arse factor but also the limitation on number of screenings.

I’m not sure a billion is a sure thing.

I think the quality of the movie will determine the impact of the runtime on the viewing experience. If it’s a good movie with good pacing, those 3 hours could breeze by. If one or more elements are off, it could feel like the movie will never end. Also, everyone’s mileage is different.

It will be interesting to hear what the overall reactions are for the movie.

Not saying people who have issues are wrong, I’m genuinely curious about what’s off-putting about a movie that’s 3 hours long.

It is a bit of a risk for the theaters. A Batman movie should be a hit, though, but it means that theaters have to put it on multiple screens to get the traffic in and maximize attendance. In this case, though, it should be a lucrative trade-off just to get people back in.

The recent Spider-Man movie was at least 2 and half hours, right? That turned out pretty well. Also, there may be an unexpected bonus in that people are so sick of being home, they want longer movies.

For me, I generally suspect that long movies will have messy stories. It’s not necessarily true, though. The Last Duel was also around 2 and a half hours and it had a very strong script – really tight, short scenes building up to a great climax. I saw an interview with Damon and Affleck on writing the script and they mentioned that when they wrote GOOD WILL HUNTING, they secretly expanded the margins on the page so it turned what was really a 140 page screenplay to 127 pages when they showed it to potential investors and studio execs.

They can’t do that anymore as the studios all insist on specific formats now, but at the same time, obviously, the studios don’t seem to care that much.

Maybe if I was in my younger days with more free time then I wouldn’t mind the running time. I don’t have much time to keep up with TV shows, let alone a movie. Add on time for getting to and from the cinema and trailers and all that and it would be a six hour venture out of my day. Not really worth it to me. I’ll eventually see it at home, possibly spread out into multiple 30 minute chunks, as Eternals was.

In general, I don’t know why any of these movies need to be over 2 hours long at most. For crying out loud, it’s Batman, not an adaptation of Lord of the Rings with a brick of a book to fit in. No need for some hamfisted attempt at a labyrinthine plot or a bunch of unecessary supporting characters. Set up the premise, make it look cool, throw in some action scenes and get the bloody thing over and done with.

The same thing happened with movies like Bond and Fast and Furious in recent years. Far too much bloat. I don’t know why, given that everyone’s attention span is shrinking in all other forms of media. Do a shorter version for the cinema so they can squeeze in more viewings each day. Have a longer version for home release so they can keep people watching the designated streaming platform for longer, as is the goal there.

That would be an interesting marketing approach.

It is ironic, but I don’t really think that “attention span” and “runtime” have a direct relationship. I mean, these same “kids” whose attention span is shrinking can spend 80 plus hours trying to get through one run of DARK SOULS or some other more recent game. Or spend 10 hours straight watching funny fails videos on the internet.

I think the attention span really applies to the scenic unit. Scenes are tighter, less dialogue, and less pause for effect, faster cutting. If anything, the fact that we spend so much more time in front of screens in daily life seems to have conditioned us for spending more time sitting and staring at a screen in theaters.

I’m not sure a billion is a sure thing.

The top three highest grossing films, each breaking the $2Billion barrier, are:
    AVATAR: 2hrs, 42min
    AVENGERS ENDGAME: 3hrs, 1min
    TITANIC: 3hrs, 14min

Obviously it’s not a sure thing for THE BATMAN, but there are precedents. Then again, I had to look up what Matt Reeves has directed previously, which does not bode well for “a sure thing”.

Oh, the prediction on the box office isn’t tied to the runtime alone.

But I do think all of those movies you mention scream ‘epic’ in a way that isn’t true of a new Batman movie. And I’ve already heard quite a few friends who would usually be into a new superhero movie say that they won’t see Batman in cinemas because of the runtime.

Either way, it will be interesting to see how good the movie turns out to be. If it’s really good it could still do well. But if it gets mediocre reviews I think the runtime will help people make the decison not to see it.

Strangely I am the opposite. I struggle now to concentrate on long stuff at home, the cinema setup demands my undivided attention.

As others have said, the runtime stuff really does depend on how they use it. Some films feel longer than they are and others feel shorter. You still get a bit wary when extra long runtimes are announced as the chances increase that it could get a bit tiresome.

So basically Snyder wanted to spend all of the first JL movie assembling the team…and then all of the 2nd movie would have the team just off doing their own thing? It also seems very predicated on The Flash and The Batman making it through development a whole lot sooner than they did. I also notice that Superman is hardly mentioned at all in that pitch. Makes it sound like he’s just moping around the house doing nothing at all. It’s a weird move to leave Superman with nothing to do, especially after the first movie where he’s largely absent. I can see why WB maybe wasn’t super into the pitch.

I assumed he was wandering around the world, snapping peoples’ necks at random.

Snyder Clark Kent: Dad, is it wrong for me to go around snapping necks?

    Snyder Pa Kent: *shrugs*

He wasn’t actually shrugging, he just had his neck snapped.
