Ian, have you read Infinite Frontier and Justice Incarnate? Flashpoint Batman has been a main character in those books.
No I haven’t read that. I do like the look of it so I might pick it up eventually.
I haven’t read anything from DC for a year or two now, so I’ve go no ideas what the continuity is now.
For the Bat-books it’ll be funny.
“Right, can anyone in the room who has not been Batman please stand up?”
So is this kicking off a line-wide event? Will every solo title have replacement characters for a few months then after the “return”, it all goes back to normal?
I guess I’ve just read Big Two comics for too long to be anything but cynical and jaded about this. I don’t even buy Marvel and DC anymore and have no intention getting this. The whole thing just sounds lazy. I’m sure to will be a big hit and so will the return. I hope it’s an enjoyable experience for the readers. As I’ve said before, I’ve come to the realization that overall, the Big Two comics are not for me anymore and I’m probably not the target audience for this stuff.
Or to quote Roger Murtaugh:
“I’m getting too old for this shit”
If anything this makes the Black Label minis the most interesting stuff from DC to an even greater degree.
Does make for a good jumping off point too
I can’t say I’m overly enthused by this either, at first glance, but as with most things it’s the creative teams that will sway me one way or the other.
Of course, if they now announce a Tim Drake as Batman title I do reserve the right to let out a girly squeal.
Will Nightwing lead the new version? He is working with Jon in a crossover between their books. I hope it would be as poorly received as when Dick (as Batman) last led the JL. I liked that but it got shelved after Flashpoint.
Jurgens cover looks old school. Dr. Light? Connor in the leather jacket? No Wonder Girls other than Donna? Kyle’s old costume? Maybe I am just biased considering who is front and center. Although Morrison and Sharp did redeem him slightly
Will Nightwing lead the new version?
I’m guessing Jace Fox will be the new Batman.
so I’ve go no ideas what the continuity is now.
Continuity is a bit fluid atm. The books I mentioned are both multiverse heavy. many of the heroes are from different universes. Many come from Morrison’s Multiversity. It looks like they are going to be preludes to Death of the JL Event.
Of course, if they now announce a Tim Drake as Batman title I do reserve the right to let out a girly squeal.
Really? In Tynion’s Detective Tim turned to be a bit Psycho when he becomes Batman.
Will every solo title have replacement characters for a few months
Jon has replaced Kal as Supes; like Ben said, there are all ready multiple Batman replacements; Donna, the Brazilian, and Cassie has already tried on the WW role; Kaldur is Aquaman; John is just one of several GLs. Either that or cancel their solo titles for the time being.
Bat-Tim has always tended to be portrayed that way. Johns did it beforehand as well, which I assume is where Tynion took his lead from. But, this wouldn’t be future Tim, this would be current Tim. There’s a lot of potential in a series where Tim’s trying to fill the role whilst avoiding turning into the unhinged character he has seen himself become previously. I think that could be cool, with the right creative team.

Yeah, I’d definitely read it. If you ever write fan-fiction like this, let me know STAT.
Cheers, buddy. That’ll probably never happen, but just writing that sentence prompted a ton of ideas in my head for what to do with it. It’s ripe territory for looking at mental health issues in a positive manner. Building a hero up rather than deconstructing one as we’ve seen many times before.
That’s a terrible list. “Hush” and “Under the Red Hood” have no place on a list of essential Batman stories.

100% agree. 110%. 200%. All the percents.
Hush isn’t brilliantly written but as an artist showcase it’s pretty fantastic.
Probably not top 7 though.

No lies detected.
Isn’t that comicsgate website?
Anyway as we discussed not long back how DC was reliant on Batman for sales I looked a few sales figures up and commented that Bendis’ Superman comics were selling around 30k. So it seems fairly typical rather than some huge slump they exaggerate by quoting #1 sales from the past.
Just clicking to see what other stories they have. They apparently don’t want any discussion of LGBT issues or climate change in any media..But don’t worry, they love the Snyder movies😏. So fucking predicable😂😂
Just reading that story, you could tell their bias. It was a crap article.
It was fairly obvious from just the headline.
That’s a terrible list. “Hush” and “Under the Red Hood” have no place on a list of essential Batman stories.
At least they left off “The Killing Joke”.
About Superman suddenly not selling well, this is essential reading:
Wow.
Stick around for the end of this. It's worth it.
Today, I woke up to piles of strangers in my mentions attacking the sales of Superman: Son of Kal-El issue #6 and celebrating the failure of our comic… 🧵 pic.twitter.com/Xa2zrI87yl— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) January 25, 2022
That was a fantastic thread, Ben. Thanks.
I love the “yes, it didn’t sell well in December, as it came out in January” bit.
Ha, I just came here to post exactly that. Hilarious.
But don’t worry, they love the Snyder movies. So fucking predicable
Why do you have to do that? That is fuckin predictable.

Brian Augustyn, 1990’s DC editor and sometimes writer, died of a stroke a few days ago. Mark Waid just announced it on Twitter. I assume the usual places will pick it up soon.
I really liked Brian. His letters pages were always warm and welcoming (I vividly remember him promoting Waid’s Captain America in Flash, for example). His writing shared many of the same characteristics as Waid’s too.
He had a great eye for artists too, bringing Weiringo and Ramos to my attention before anyone else. And, who can forget “Gotham by Gaslight”?
I hadn’t seen anything from him in a long time, but this is sad news. He’ll be missed.
THE JURASSIC LEAGUE Imagines the Justice League as Dinosaurs
This looks beyond stupid. But I kind of dig it. Not enough to pay cash for it but enough that I am glad it exists.
Hang on, did someone forget to kill Hal Jordan?
On another note, has anyone been reading Batgirls? Any good?
The first two issues of Batgirls were a lot of fun. I was a bit iffy on them going in, as I didn’t enjoy the backups by the same creative team too much, but these were great. Clever and funny, with cute artwork. Pleasantly surprised and definitely on board for more.
Is there a reliable way to track comic book sales by issue vs trades and graphic novels?
DC does seem to depend heavily on Batman and Batman related titles. I would not be surprised if its Batman business made as much money as all other comics combined (Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman – any title that does not include Batman or a Batman character) basically just because there are so many.
At the same time, I don’t think Superman titles are selling any worse – or any better really – than they were during the New 52 or Rebirth. Nevertheless, don’t you feel that the comics – the individual issues – are just getting too expensive? It seems pretty close to $5 (maybe just for Batman titles) and I’ve seen some pretty close to $6. That’s just too expensive for a single issue of 20 – 30 pages. So even if the sales are just as good in total as when the comics were $3 to $4 (still pretty expensive for one issue), that means they would be selling fewer issues in general.
Digital is probably cheaper and I’ve seen subscriptions that work out to $2.99 per issue though. However, it still feels like a daunting investment especially for new readers and I don’t necessarily see any added value in the quality of the writing or art compared to when they cost less.
Is there a reliable way to track comic book sales by issue vs trades and graphic novels?
Comichron do an annual roundup of the mix of sales via format but they don’t dive down into individual titles.
ICV2 do the monthly chart of sales of issues and trades but the trade numbers are a bit limited as they only track the direct market and not bookshops.
When it comes to value really the Marvel and DC apps are the ones that can offer that. My annual subscription to Marvel Unlimited works out to about $5.50 and I’ll read about 20 new books a month on it.

Off-topic from DC, but Scribd sometime recently got the license for Image Comics collections, and have a huge collection of digital books from them: https://www.scribd.com/search?query=%22Image+Comics%2C+Inc.%22&content_type=books&page=1&released_on=
It’s annoyingly hard to find individual titles without searching, so I keep the “Added in the last month” page bookmarked.
They’re very up to date, some of the books on there were just released two weeks ago.
They have a a lot of BOOM too, but it’s much harder to search for as it keeps just bringing up any book that mentions the word “Boom” in its description.
Dark Crisis, DC Comics’ Next Event, Kicks Off With the Death of the Justice League – ComicBook.com
DC stunned fans when they revealed the upcoming Death of the Justice League, which will happen in Justice League #75, and now they’ve revealed the massive event that will follow. Today DC Comics revealed all the details on Dark Crisis, a seven-issue event that will spin right out of Death of the Justice League and will kick off with a special Free Comic Book Day issue in Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Special Edition. There will also be a special one-shot titled Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, and you can get a preview of all three starting on the next slide. You can also check out a brand new teaser trailer for Dark Crisis in the video above.
Dark Crisis is a monthly event that will be written by Joshua Williamson, drawn by Daniel Sampere, colored by Alejandro Sanchez, and lettered by Tom Napolitano. The story traces back all the way to the original crisis, as an ancient destructive force known as the Great Darkness has been revealed to be behind some of the universe’s most instrumental and darkest moments. Now Pariah will attempt to use that force to eliminate Earth-0 and restore his homeward and the infinite multiverse. The heroes who are left must team up to face this ancient evil, but it remains to be seen if everyone is up to the task.
“Dark Crisis is an epic DCU event about legacy,” said writer Joshua Williamson. “It will have all the giant, fun cosmic battles and Multiversal set pieces, but it’s not about reboots, retcons, or rewriting time and space. At its core, it’s about the characters and the relationships that we’ve seen built over DC’s great history. Dark Crisis spins out of Justice League #75 ‘DEATH OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE’ and connects all the story threads across the DCU since Infinite Frontier #0 in a major way. Unifying the new legacy of the DCU as we honor the classic. You can’t miss it!”
“To me, Dark Crisis is a big celebration for all DC fans,” said artist Daniel Sampere. “It’s a huge event full of epic heart, an event that embraces the past while looking to the future. Joshua and I are the biggest DC fans, and this is our love letter to these characters and this universe.”

DC’s New Batman Series Reunites Rogue One Writer Gary Whitta, The Boys Co-Creator Darick Robertson – ComicBook.com
Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Darick Robertson (The Boys) are running for a new Batman miniseries this May.
Batman: Fortress is an eight-issue series that finds an alien spaceship entering Earth’s atmosphere. This causes the world to plunge into chaos and Superman nowhere to be found. The Dark Knight stands as the last line of defense against an alien invasion, but he must first put his efforts into defending Gotham. The DC miniseries reunites Whitta and Robertson, who have previously collaborated to create the Image Comics dystopian series Oliver, which is a new take on the literary classic.“This has been my first opportunity to collaborate with my Oliver co-creator Gary Whitta for DC, on a character that is one of my all-time favorites to draw,” Robertson said. “I’m having the best time creating the art for this series and with my pal and original The Boys editor, Ben Abernathy at the helm, it’s been a dream project, with a lot of fun twists and surprises ahead for the readers!”
“It’s always been my dream to write a truly epic Batman story, one that draws inspiration from some dark and unexpected corners of the DC universe,” Whitta said. “The opportunity to once again collaborate with my friend Darick Robertson makes this all the sweeter. I hope that together we’ve done justice to some of DC’s most iconic characters, while at the same time reinventing everything you thought you knew about them…”
Darick Robertson’s covers for Batman: Fortress #1 and #2 find Bruce Wayne in the Batcave monitoring all of the different catastrophic events taking place around the world. Newsfeeds from New York, London, Metropolis, Paris, Munich, and Gotham show riots, things on fire, and total chaos from the invading aliens. The cover to Issue #2 features Batman flying a fighter jet with Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, and Cyborg trailing behind with other jets.

DC Announces Danger Street Series Featuring Doctor Fate, Starman, and More – ComicBook.com
The tapestry of the DC universe continues to grow and take shape, uniting newer characters and concepts with heroes and villains that have been around for decades. On Friday, DC Comics announced the newest example of what that will entail, in the form of the Black Label maxiseries Danger Street. The twelve-issue series, which will be released bi-monthly, will unite some of the “most obscure and offbeat” characters in DC’s arsenal — particularly, the ones who graced the pages of the DC 1st Issue Special anthology series of the 1970s, which aimed to either launch new characters’ stories or revive lesser-known characters. Danger Street will be the latest collaboration between writer Tom King, artist Jorge Fornés, and colorist Dave Stewart, all of whom previously worked together on the publisher’s Rorschach maxiseries.
In Danger Street, joining the Justice League is a goal for any superhero, but what happens when a quest for membership takes a sinister turn? Join Starman, Metamorpho, and Warlord as they look to prove themselves worthy by summoning and defeating Darkseid in battle. Soon they’ll learn that calling upon a New God never ends well, and their world is headed for disaster as a result! The journey to save the day will be a treacherous one filled with princesses, knights, and all kinds of monsters. Each person the heroes encounter plays a crucial role in this sprawling yet gripping narrative that is a little bit silly, a whole lot dark, and completely cool.
The very term “Danger Street” originated in DC 1st Issue Special #6, with a story by Jack Kirby introducing a group of latchkey kids dubbed The Dingbats of Danger Street. While we’ll have to wait and see if the Dingbats factor into this Danger Street miniseries, we do know some of the characters who could star in the proceedings. The aforementioned Metamorpho and Warlord appeared in stories in 1st Issue Special’s second and eighth installments, as did the lesser-known Mikaal Tomas incarnation of Starman in Issue #12. The covers for Danger Street also feature Atlas, who starred in the 1st Issue Special #1; The Creeper, who starred in 1st Issue Special #7; and Doctor Fate, who starred in 1st Issue Special #9. Some of the original title’s other characters included Manhunter, Lady Cop, and Codename: Assassin.
Danger Street #1 is set to be released in comic book shops and participating digital platforms on Tuesday, May 3rd. It will feature a main cover by Fornés, an open to buy variant cover by Steve Rude, a 1-in-25 ratio variant cover from Lee Weeks, and a 1-in-50 ratio from Ben Oliver.

Many thanks for the links…
You are a gentleman and a scholar!
Depends which Robin 😂
Overall, I found the article to be very Robin-positive. It showed the character’s importance in relation to Batman.
Zdarsky and Jiminez are the new creative team on Batman. With Tim Drake as Robin in (at least) the first story arc. I may have squealed! This should be a pretty awesome run.
And Zdarsky is going to stay on Daredevil too. It’s almost too perfect for an inter-company crossover.
Here’s the link from ComicBook.com – Chip Zdarsky & Jorge Jimenez Are The New Batman Creative Team
Agreed on the crossover idea, Vik. There’s been a few of note to write both characters, but at the same time? Pretty sure it’s a first.

Egad! That’s great news!
Anyone reading Batman: The Knight? Also by Zdarsky and an artist I can’t quite remember the name of, but he/she is really good. The title is entertaining enough.
Again, great news!
In my “to read” pile. I did read Zdarsky’s Batman: Urban Legends run though (#1-6). That was good stuff, even focused on Red Hood as it was.
Priest on a new Black Adam ongoing sounds pretty epic to me. I’m in.

DC Solicitations for June 2022 are up in the Solicitation thread.
Fire, Ice and Doctor Light aged well.
I almost bought the three Batman Earth One hardcovers the other day. Good to see they’re collecting if all in one big trade, I’ll just hold off for that instead.
Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes #1 opens with a double-page splash of around two-dozen Legionnaires, all of them brand-new designs introduced in their own series 12 issues ago and most of them barely involved in any of the events of that series so even a long-time fan like myself barely knows who any of them are, the JLA fans who picked up this crossover probably won’t have a clue. Two of them are explicitly named on the page.
Half way through the book, seven long-established and well-loved members of the JLA (plus someone called Naomi) are introduced in a double-page splash, and every single one gets a caption giving their name and a brief sentence describing them.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, in this case of The People vs. Brian Michael Bendis, the prosecution rests.
(I would write more, but for a standard-length comic that contains six double-page spreads (one of them all black) and two full-page splashes (actually one repeated twice with different colours), I would be in danger of writing a review with more content than the comic itself.)

I’m not full of hope about how quickly they roll out the rest of the world so I think my UK debit card, VPN and finding APK files on the web should get this done. £37 is a bargain.
This is a good deal. 7-day free trial, then I pay $59.99 CDN (+ tax, 5%), and every year after (until I cancel).
5 bucks a month? Not a problem.
Still a good deal at $89.99 a year, but getting in on the introductory offer saves me $30 a year (Thanks again Vic!).
Even a paper purist should consider this. Cut down your monthly purchases, sample more and maybe/probably you buy more HC’s.
It’s a win/ win.
I can’t be a paper purist because of moving around a lot but I also realised that I rarely re-read or re-watch that much to really need it to be permanent. So a subs model is ideal for me really. It’s better than Comixology which I have now largely abandoned.
So I get great value from Marvel Unlimited, hope to get the same from DC Infinite but am feeling a bit hampered by Scribd being buggy as fuck (they do Image and Boom releases). It’s a great offering in theory but pages won’t load in the app, suddenly nothing appears in search. It’s enormously frustrating.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS! You decide which one of these pitches will become a new comic book series in #DCRoundRobin2022. Vote for your favorites in the thread below. 👇

Yeah I think it wasn’t until the second issue that the silly quality of it really clicked for me. It reminded me of Morrison’s Blackstars which was similarly tongue-in-cheek.
