Witchblade celebrates 25 Years with anniversary collection
2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the 1995 debut of Witchblade – the long0running character at the core of one of Top Cow’s foremost franchises. And to celebrate, the publisher is putting together a 25th anniversary collection – that even includes portions of spin-off series The Darkness.
“25 years of Witchblade is pretty amazing but it never would have been possible without the love and support of her fans!” said co-creator Marc Silvestri in the collection’s announcement. “We at Top Cow are humbled and appreciative beyond words. Let’s do another 25!”
The collection, which is taking pre-orders now on Kickstarter, comprises Witchblade #1-19, Darkness #9 & 10, and the Tales of the Witchblade limited series.
The Kickstarter campaign, which will include rewards such as Witchblade t-shirts, totebags, and other merchandise exclusive to the Kickstarter, will be followed by a direct market release. Every hardcover copy of the collection sold through the campaign will be signed by Silvestri.
“I remember when Witchblade first launched twenty-five years ago,” added Top Cow President/COO Matt Hawkins. “I was at a rival studio and we were all blown away by the art and story. Many attempted copies, including us, but none really succeeded. Longevity is the testament!“

I find it weird that a company with a license from Disney would need to crowdfund their products. Or that Disney would allow it.

I’ve heard more from McFarlane in the past five years than I have in the previous 20.
Todd McFarlane’s Urgent Warning To The Comics Industry: ‘We Can’t Just Sit Here And Do Nothing!’
On April 8, McFarlane is launching his first crowdfunding campaign, a Kickstarter with a $100,000 target to produce a “Remastered” collectors’ item Spawn action figure and limited edition comic, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first version from 1995, with an option to have it autographed by McFarlane himself. In the course of an interview to promote the new project and update the status of the Spawn reboot feature film, he offered opinions on a number of issues facing the comics industry in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, including hot buttons like whether publishers should turn to digital releases while physical product is unavailable. Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
Todd McFarlane: Having been in business for over 30 years, I’ve done all the other channels. I’ve done dotcoms, small stores, collector boutiques, and obviously big retailers. What I’ve never done is crowdfunding. It’s an experiment. We’ve been talking about it for a while and now seemed like a good time to try it. Once we have it going, we’ll have some data to know what’s working and what isn’t.
The fact is, we have to do something. Things have changed in our industry, obviously, both on the toy side and the comics side. No new comics are coming out. That’s a really dangerous situation – not just for us but for any consumer industry that relies on established customer habits. If you give your customer a chance to break their habit, they might not come back.
I understand how we got here and why we’re at a standstill, but even if the distributor [Diamond] is down, we can’t just sit here and do nothing. So I’m trying to do something. Remember, even if we’re not going to stores or movies right now, geeks will always be geeks! So we need to find ways to keep what we do on the minds of customers however we can.

The Original SPAWN Action Figure & Comic Remastered (2020) Kickstarter Campaign
I heard rumours of this some time ago, and it appears it’s finally happened. Jim Starlin returns from what should have been a career-ending hand injury to draw a new Dreadstar story:

Ben Dunn’s NINJA HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK vol.2
NINJA HIGH SCHOOL Yearbook volume 2 is a special collection of stories based in the NINJA HIGH SCHOOL universe.
Sean Gordon Murphy’s crowd funded, creator owned book has gone live. It’s really expensive to ship to the UK, but I’m all in for the hardcover.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-plot-holes#/
I’m tempted by the HC + AE combo, but the UK shipping is crazy expensive. I’m going to wait to decide.
You could always give her a box of Seán’s comics to read if she hasn’t already then it can be a case of I saw this and thought of us.
If anyone’s a fan of Moon and Mute, the final part of the Mooniverse is here:
Ngolo Diaspora
An African Martial arts comic book series based on the award-winning Ngolo screenplay.
Sounds like the final push I need to sign up.
Which package did you go for in the end? I’m probably going for the AE/HC combo like I said upthread.
Just the hardcover. With international shipping that still worked out to be something like £60. Not cheap, by any means, but hopefully worth it.

BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, & Ron Garney
A graphic novel series about an immortal warrior seeks only one thing: the truth about his blood-soaked existence… and how to end it!
Reeves & Kindt, with Ron Garney on art is a pretty awesome creative team. I’ll be picking this up for sure. Hope it’s good.
I won’t be joining the Kickstarter though. With shipping the cheapest tier works out at close to $150 for three TPBs. That’s crazy!

NINJA HIGH SCHOOL Yearbook vol.4 collection
A collection of the NINJA HIGH SCHOOL Yearbooks volume 4.
Collection of work by Golden Age artist Jack Katz. To be honest I know virtually nothing about him, but some of the examples given here are stunning:
Huh, well kickstarter doesn’t seem to like forums linking to its pages. The link is:

Liam Sharpe has been on of the people behind the Jack Katz Kickstarter, shared some photos of the two of them (Katz in his 90s but still going).
It was funded within 24 hours.
Collection of work by Golden Age artist Jack Katz.
I found the first collection of his graphic novel FIRST KINGDOM (collecting issues 1-6) waaaaay back in 1978; it’s still a valued part of my collection. I didn’t know anything about him at the time, but the scope and sweep of that book, and the Alex-Raymondesque artwork, just blew me away.

Steve Sims is one of my favourite comics artists, I’ve got about three commissions by him (and have ideas for more). He’s just launched a Kickstarter for a hardcover collection of his self-published series Beast Hunting Battle Badgers.
Kevin Keller CELEBRATION! A 10th Anniversary Omnibus
An omnibus of every Kevin Keller story created since his arrival in Riverdale a decade ago!
There’s a Kickstarter up for a hardcover collection of Silvestri’s Cyberforce. Very tempted to get this to go with my Absolute WildC.A.T.s hardcover. They are far from the best comics out there, but they’re so pretty, and hit my nostalgic buttons hard. Goddamnit.

John Haynes: At Death’s Door
The Man Who Rules The World Takes on the Greek god of Death in this Action packed All-New John Haynes Comic!
Grant Morrison and Dan Mora’s Klaus is up on Kickstarter for a deluxe hardcover and various goodies. I enjoyed these stories tremendously and would like a lovely oversized hardcover edition. Not expected to ship until next Christmas though.
Black Friday discounts for early bird backers.
To be fair, the hardcover omnibus at the moment is $60 + shipping. Which is cheaper than the three previous hardcovers’ at cover price. It’s only the slipcased and signed editions that are ridiculously expensive.
But, yeah, if you’ve got the earlier ones (I don’t) there’s probably not much here to warrant an upgrade.
I am starting my 11th project today… after my adventures chronicling the Mummies coming back to live and becoming the Sisterhood, there now has been found a new ´sister ´ …
We call her lovingly the Mermaid Mummy.
And for her introduction, I am launching a massive artbook first. !!

My friend (and sometime editor) Phil Lee is running a kickstarter for his first non-licensed and self-published fiction, a retro-styled space opera. He’s a pretty good author in his own right and the Kickstarter is slowly but surely working towards funding but of course it’s not a done thing… Unless everyone here chips in.

Kickstarter for Sean Murphy’s Zorro book:
Book looks like it could be interesting but the prices are ridiculous, I’ll just buy the retail versions at a fraction of the cost.
I agree. That’s kind of where I am too. I want the hardcover, but $50 plus shipping for a four issue mini series collection is a bit rich. If there was something additional to that tier I might be tempted.
I also struggle with crowd funding for projects from comic book publishers. These issues will eventually come out at my LCS for $4 a comic. Why would I pledge such inflated prices for a few different covers, especially when I’ll end up getting them after the on sale date in store (when you factor in international shipping).
It’s one thing when it’s a creator trying to do it themselves or it’s Kickstarter exclusive (even if only temporarily), but I don’t see the advantage to me in this case.
Yeah exactly. It just seems to be milking the fanbase. I still feel a bit burned by The Plot Holes if I’m honest.
What was/ is your issue with The Plot Holes, Dave?
Yep, I’ll be picking that up.
