The movie is set in 1984, of course he is not a good dresser.

It’s been 14 years since I read a DC book and about 7 years for Marvel. I’ll skim through the solicitations in Previews and online but I haven’t seen anything to make me want to jump back in. I am so removed from the current continuity that it feels virtually impenetrable to re-enter into it.

There’s plenty of books that don’t require any knowledge of current continuity from both DC and Marvel over the years.

The trades thread and ongoing comics threads have been full of these recommendations for a long time.

I totally appreciate that folk are fed up with superheroes and have moved on from that, but there’s a plenty of good examples from DC and Marvel, many of which do not need any knowledge of current continuity and have been highly regarded on here and further afield, even as much as Eisner nominations.

the entire black label from DC, with Wonder Woman Dead Earth being a particularly strong recent example. Grant Morrison’s Earth One Wonder Woman book is another terrific book which requires zero knowledge of continuity. There’s loads.

Vision and Mister Miracle by Tom King and Earth One Green Lantern, both volumes. Thing about those specific examples though is that they’re pretty far removed from the standard superheroics. Green Lantern is a little bit closer than the other, but it’s still more adventuruous space opera sci-fi (both) stuff than the classic superhero thing.

Robinson wrote a handful of issues. Johns wrote about 100.

yea, that was a cheap shot and I apologize and truthfully his part of the WW script might not have been all the bad but I stick by my comment about using someone who has actually written WW. Rucka and Simone both wrote well regarded WW comics. I like both of these writers and they get discounted because Johns is the one with Hollywood connections?

The writer on the first movie – Allan Heinberg, I believe – was also a writer on the Dodson Wonder Woman run. I think  having a writer that familiar with the character helped a lot. He didn’t come back for the sequel though – possibly part of the purge, but he co-wrote comics with Johns so likely he was just working on something else.

So I just realized that Metallica’s 2nd Album Ride the Lightning came out in 1984… so I’m gonna choose to believe the scene where she literally rides a lightning bolt is actually a very subtle reference/nod, since that’s one thing I can like about the movie*… =P

*Athough to be fair, even if it doesn’t make sense, I REALLY liked the visual of her riding the lightning.

  • #48482

A superhero with ties to ancient mythology riding in on lightning?

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #48492

He’s not riding the lightning though… kind of the inverse… also, Ragnarok’s not called Thor 84 and the movie isn’t set in the year 1984… =P

Other than that, yes… it would’ve been a better choice to use a Metallica tune in that scene, if only because that song was used at another point in the movie. Like, the begining of for whom the bell tolls would’ve killed at that moment.

I think this one is funnier than the TENET pitch:

    (1) Wonder Woman 1984 Pitch Meeting – YouTube

“Cat’s get sleepy when they’re electrocuted.”

    “I don’t think that’s right.”

“That’s what my dad told me when my cat chewed through the electric cord when I was kid.”

“She wishes to become an apex predator.”

“And she turns into a cat? Couldn’t she have just as easily turned into a killer whale.”

“Yeah, but then the fight scene wouldn’t’ve been as cool.”

    “I wholeheartedly disagree.”

Reminiscent of that deleted scene from Return of the Jedi where Luke lays out his plans for rescuing han.

Even more reminiscent of that Gremlins 2 brainstorming session.

I have to admit a highlight for me in Dolby Atmos surround was the “Welcome to the Pleasuredome’ playing them in to the party, that bassline sounds so good with that quality. A bit more of that would have been good.

The huge disappointment of WW84 only makes me wish that Marvel would release BLACK WIDOW right now!! Even if it ends up being 120 minutes of Natasha and her sister arguing, it would still be better than the Wonder Woman fiasco.

Wonder Woman 1984 Director Defends Controversial Steve Trevor Storyline

Technically, she just agreed with somebody’s weak-ass rationalization.

And the guy goes through the comments trying to defend it. He’s not convincing at all.

  • #48776

Well, no.2 is nonsense because she still did it. No.1 would mean that Jenkins expected people to realise how hugely problematic this is and talk about it, which doesn’t seem likely?
Damn, I may need to actually watch this movie at least so I can have a proper opinion.

I’m actually surprised at that 74% for the audience score… It’s really not a good movie…

Maybe the 74% are into rape porn.

WW84 had too much rape, not enough porn. The balance was completely off.

I was honestly more bothered with the reckless disregard to the dude’s life and body… I mean, they get into fights (Steve gets repeatedly punched, even by a superpowered chick), they break into several federal places and commit crimes, they enter other countries illegaly and kill people there, and then they don’t even bother to leave the poor guy’s body near a hospital at least… So I’m sure that by the time he wakes up back into his body he’ll have multiple internal wounds and be on several agencies’ lists, and to top it off someone went through his shit in his appartment. The rape thing seems like the least of his worries at that point.

Just saw it… Liked some parts but overall…meh

I feel bad for Patty Jenkins. Gal Gadot is very pretty and lights up the screen, but it was wasted on bad material.
The whole ancient magic artifact stuff was bad.

    Give Jenkins better material.

As for a rewrite and better ideas in hindsight, look in the Storytelling thread.

Jenkins wrote the movie (with Geoff Johns.)

Well, the idea of giving her better material holds true, I suppose. Not the feeling bad for her part, obviously, but… as with Snyder (sorry, Jon!), we can maybe see once again that it’d be nice if more directors focused on being directors and stayed away from actually writing the screenplay. Yes, directors are often very important to getting a movie made and it’ll be their vision in most cases so they will have a big influence on the screenplay, but… they don’t actually have to write it now do they. (And Geoff Johns certainly doesn’t.)

    Not everybody is James Cameron.

Nah fam, I’m sorry but the script of WW82 is not even in the same ballpark as ANY Snyder movie… yes, not even the much maligned Sucker Punch. I mean, I guess we could blame Geoff Johns, his name is certainly attached to a lot of DC movies’ disasters, but it’s sooooooo bad that it’s hard to see how it’s just one person’s fault.

I suppose that sometimes, a number of people have to come together in just the right way to create something that is perfectly bad.
