Just a thread to mess around with getting Tweets, Twitter videos, Instragram posts etc embedding or displaying, through the various available methods, if they can.

Twitter’s “embed tweet” code.

There’s a reporter sitting beside me right now, he’s doing a piece about incredibly sarcastic Irish Socialists who work in IT and are obsessed with robots.

Well I think Todd is winning so far.

Indeed. I went looking into it and I think WordPress’ bbcode model needs a plugin to handle any kind of content embedding from a link (and the HTML stuff isn’t worth bothering with). It’s hard to know what’s part of what version of things like bbcode.

Added a new plugin to do visual links but that clearly didn’t work.

Playing about with tagging members. @garjones – did that work?

    Edit: looks like it did.

Yeah it did, I added user tags last week but I must admit I am struggling for solutions for previews of links which I would like.

There are plugins for WordPress that do it (and WordPress is primarily meant for websites and blogs) but they don’t work on the forum sections. Yet.

Is there any way to have a little notification button to show you’ve unread notifications (like the little blue circle MW had)? I saw no indication of your reply gar until I actually clicked into this thread.

  • #439

I’m doing that by using the ‘new’ tags in the forum view at the moment.

  • #466

On the desktop version, there’s a little notification on the top black bar, next to the “howdy “.

How do you post pictures from a phone? When I hit “img”, it asks for a link.

  • #751

There is no upload function on the board, you can only link to images stored elsewhere like the old days.

I can add that function but I don’t want to right now because I have limited data storage as part of this package at 50gb. Storing images and video on the site’s server could eat into that quickly.

I after we have settled in to normal usage and I see there’s enough storage there to do it I may add the function. So for now if you want to share a photo for your phone you have to store it somewhere first. (Before uploading got added to the old board I used to have an album in Facebook I’d use).

  • #752

    Thank you for the information.

  • #758

Yeah, I’ve used flickr to upload stuff for this board and it’s worked fine so far.

  • #761

I checked the old board. There is current 26.4 GB in upload storage used. However, I think the board purged quite a bit not long ago, either something Jim did when we made the initial decision to close the board or in coming back from the outage.

Cross-posting this from the design discussion thread, I’m getting those Imgur embedded gallery things showing up totally broken on mobile, with cookie warnings on each and every one

and then not displaying properly after that

So far I’m the only one reporting getting that (might be an iOS thing, who knows), but using a direct link to an image on Imgur (as I’ve done here) works fine, so I’d suggest hotlinking to specific images or a plain link to a gallery.

  • #954

Those links show up as scrollable galleries for me, so more than just a single image. I think I’d probably prefer that than all the images in the gallery being posted separately.

  • #955

(I’m on mobile too, by the way.)

Well, I kinda meant that people would be selective in choosing one or two pictures to post followed by a link, rather than hotlinking everything.

    Pic

  • #1181

Are you using the ‘IMG’ button when you post a pic?

  • #1190

    Is this one showing up?

  • #1193

That depends. Is it a picture of a blank square with a broken image icon in it?

  • #1195

    You tell me. ;-)

  • #1198

Well, yes it is. But is it *supposed* to be?

  • #1241

It depends what you mean by “supposed to be”.

(This is turning into the mind-expansion thread.)

  • #1305

It depends on what you mean by “it”.

  • #1322

Well that depends what you mean by “depends”.

  • #1349

    B-)

  • #1498

    test
    Hopefully this works.

    @garjones
how much storage would you need to host images here? I’d be willing to up my donation to make it possible. :good:

Can’t seem to get it…yes @RonnieM I was thinking of you when I tried to post that. :-)

  • #1516

Use the “img” button to post the link. You will also need to use a link directly to the image and not just a page containing the image. So the address should end in .jpg, .bmp, .gif, etc.
