Dredd is very consistent in the prog nowadays. They have a rotating few writers, Niemand, Rob Willams, Carroll etc (along with the odd cameo from semi-retired John Wagner) who really get the strip and the ability to switch from the silly end of satire to tense thrillers very well.

Yeah I enjoy that variety in tone. The recent one that ended with a character under protection by the judges ultimately committing suicide was pretty grim but then they follow that with a much lighter story about the judges taking down a bunch of outlandish alien characters. Both enjoyable in different ways.
Remembering the story that while it was being written had to be cut from 6 parts to 5, and then finally to 4, because of artist tardiness and bullshit.
Anyway, the fourth and final part of Judge Dredd: Succession is out this week, prog 2324 pic.twitter.com/rJMwtYx6TY— Kenneth Niemand (@KennethNiemand) March 19, 2023
So, er, this is one writer / artist pairing that will not be repeated in future?
For fellow 2000ad readers. Do you have any idea what the fuck is happening in ‘Hope’? It’s beautifully drawn but completely impenetrable for me.
I like it a lot
BUT
I have no fucking idea what is happening no
I plan to sit and read it all in one go in the future at some point which often helps. I was the same with Proteus Vex until I did that.
Proteus Vex is a series that demands a lot of attention because there’s a lot of world creation, jargon and alien concepts and politics in it but once you adjust to that the narrative is pretty straightforward.
I have my doubts Hope will work as well even on a re-read, it has a lot of characters and I don’t know what motivates them, but tell me if it does. It is such a stylish looking strip.
Yeah, once I took my time with Vex it was fairly straight forward. I’m a big fan of Michael Carroll so I knew it was worth persevering with. Although I’m lost again in this 3rd volume 😂
Broxton’s art is definitely the star of the show on Hope……I’ve enjoyed some of Guy Adam’s other stuff so I’ll come back to it.
Subscribed to 2000AD in hard copy today, starting with Prog 2326 for Garth Ennis on Rogue Trooper. Very exciting.
Does anyone else subscribe? When do physical copies usually arrive through the post?
Yeah I have a sub to both 2000ad and the Megazine
The copies often arrive on a Saturday. They usually get here a few days before they hit the shelves.
Glad you’ve come on board I hope there’s a few strips you like.
2000ad can be a bit of pot luck just now, usually depending on the writers.
(My copy hasn’t arrived yet, so I’m guessing it will be Monday/Tuesday). I’ve still not read last weeks regened issue, I’m not sure I’ll even bother to be honest. It’s a chore every time.
It was a pretty good issue. Rogue’s looking promising, with an iconic opening and some fantastic art from Goddard. Niemand’s Dredd one off was excellent too. And, Durham Red entertaining enough. I skipped The Order and Enemy Earth. No idea what either is about. So a total mixed bag, as you say.
It’s funny how I find my interest in 2000AD waxing and waning over time. When I’m in I’m all the way in – devouring everything I can find and spending hours scouring eBay for deals on back issues. That usually lasts for a while before it cools off and I drop off again for a year or two.
I don’t know if that is reflective of the quality of the material or just that it starts to feel a bit samey after a while.
Those Regened issues are pants though. Such a waste.
I don’t have the issue yet and I already know that’s exactly what I will think of the 5 strips
I have not enjoyed anything Cavan Scott has written and I hate Luke Horseman’s art.
The Order is quite a difficult series to follow. It’s also run longer than it should have.
The Order in my view is self indulgent bollocks, it goes nowhere, has a massive cast impossible to follow. Saved often by Burns doing the art who is incredibly old and well into his 80s but still great.
As an anthology you have to accept to a degree you’ll never love every strip but there are better creators in the British comics scene than some 2000ad stick with. The Dredd writers are great, Kek-W just writes confusing nonsense, James Peaty writes boring stories. Abnett, Williams, Niemand are great.
Caught up on the last 3 issues of 2000ad
The Dredds were decent, Durham Red is a good action strip as it has been under Worley and Willsher
I skipped both The Order and Enemy Earth. The former is pretty much impenetrable now, the cast is so big and it’s been going on for over a decade. The latter is an embarrassment of writing and art and should never be near 2000ad.
Rogue Trooper is excellent, both writing and art. I like how theyve captured the tone and look of the Finley-Day strips, Goddard is channeling Mike Western here. And the high concept works so well, it’s not what I was expecting at all, but probably should have !
Read these tonight and quite enjoyed the latest batch of progs.
Having The Out and Ennis’ Rogue Trooper running at the same time brings up the average quality level considerably, and I think I get a bit more out of 2000AD when I save up several issues to read at once.
The Out is finished for now, so I’ll still likely drop it when Ennis leaves (unless something really great comes along) but will be back once The Out returns as this third arc has been as good as the first two.
Plus I think they’ve had some really strong covers lately that stand out on the shelf.
I haven’t been blown away by Ennis’ Rogue Trooper, but it is very enjoyable so far. The twist in the last couple of Progs was a welcome one and I look forward to seeing how this all concludes.
I do hope it’s not a one off and he comes back for more later on.
I have high hopes for the new Abnett series.
Same, saw the as for it again today, a new Abnett series is always exciting

I just came on here to post this same Kickstarter – I hope it does great. Such an underrated book.
I’m not a fan of kickstarters but I couldn’t not back this.
Here’s a short interview with my local paper

Same here. Ive backed load of overpriced mediocre comics there in the past but occasionally a gem will pop up on it. (Last thing i backed before this was the excellent Gamesmaster hustory book).

😀 same
prior to that it was Rok of the Reds, I think
Garth Ennis and Patrick Goddard’s Rogue Trooper story wrapped up in this week’s Prog. For something that started out fairly light and breezy (for a war story, at least) it became pretty dark and brutal by the end. The final chapter or two are pretty horrific in tone; far bleaker than I expected at the start. For all its futuristic sci-fi, timey-wimey, boys adventure shenanigans, ultimately it’s tonally very much in line with Garth’s usual war stores.
I enjoyed reading this a lot and hope very much that the creative team will be back for another run soon. This was great.

I just read the last couple of issues of 2000AD and I have to agree – this was a really good ending that I found pretty poignant and thoughtful, like so many of his war stories.
John Burns retires making the nigh on unreadable (but great to look at) The Order one of his last gigs.

Wow, huge news. He deserves to enjoy his retirement knowing he leaves an amazing amount of work.
Not just 2000AD either, he did some classic literature adaptations too. I have those still to read.
And then there is his stunning work on the forever-under-the-radar epic Nikolai Dante.
A superb tribute to an incredible artist:
Honestly John M Burns is amazing. He’s been churning out quality and quantity in his 2000ad work for years now and I knew he was way past 80 years old and yet putting out more content than artists a quarter of his age.
He deserves his rest and retirement. I don’t know anyone else his age that plugged away so hard and didn’t dip in quality.
I have many complaints about how The Order plot is incomprehensible but his artwork is sublime, as was the Nikolai Dante run.
Talking of Nikolai Dante, with so much more material available digitally, I had thought it might become more well known, but it seems to stay an under-the-radar epic.

It probably always will. I’ve pushed it as an all time great and it will be largely ignored as there are no big names or publisher.
As a long term character narrative in comics with a beginning, middle and end it is probably only matched by Preacher.
It sounds like Ian Gibson is coming to the end of his life after a period of illness and being in and out of hospital.

That’s sad news. I was never the biggest fan of Ian’s style, but he’s indelibly linked with the “golden age” of 2000AD in my mind. Robo-Hunter, Halo Jones, a smattering of Dredds. He definitely left an impact.
Ian Gibson has passed.

I think he’ll get those funds.
If anyone sees a link do post it here. I’d definitely contribute.
As Ben suggested the fundraiser for Gibson’s funeral plans seems to have hit its target pretty quickly.
Being reported that John M Burns has died.

Sad news but he leaves an incredible creative legacy.
The initial Spector run by John Wagner, Carlos Ezquerra and Dan Cornwall wrapped up in today’s Megazine. I really enjoyed this, and hope it comes back for another run soon. It features a far more straight up heroic character from Wagner than we are used to seeing, but it still displays his strength of characterisation and storytelling skills. And, Cornwall’s art is brilliant. He takes over with part 3 (of ten), after Ezquerra’s sad passing – that must have been daunting! – yet he quickly makes it his own. This was good stuff.
Oh, sequel!
Don’t know if anyone’s interested, but #181 of the 2000AD Ultimate Collection part works (the new issue out this week) collects the first three volumes of The Out.
A nice way to catch up with the series, as the tpb only reprints the first two books. Book four starts in the Prog in September.
The Out is absolutely amazing, btw.
