So that Picard book due Feb 2020?
RRP is£16.99!
To see why this is a problem, Trek paperbacks used to be RRP £6-8. With the start of Discovery this increased to RRP £10.99. And now again. Time to bail.
For anyone after it, Amazon now has Mack’s soon to be out Collateral Damage for £7.91. Probably be one of the best prices for it.
This is the one that, as far as anyone knows, wraps up the last 20 years of Trek books.
Is that £16.99 for a paperback?
Yes it is. A hardback would be a far more competitive product at that price.
Wow. That’s a lot.
Yeah, even with a good net discount you’re looking at £10 in all likelihood.
Picard premieres 23rd January!

I don’t see an official non-US version yet, but this link should work:
Well, I thoroughly enjoyed Q&A, a fun little character piece.
It was alright, and it did make me miss the show and wish (even more than usual) for an Enterprise series with this cast.
That haircut doesn’t suit Peck at all. He’s good casting for Spock, but they should adapt the template to suit him better.
Trailer for the next Short Trek, featuring Rosa Salazar and H. Jon Benjamin, plus Anson Mount:
Would you say that, with this invasion of tribbles, we are entering a zone full of danger?
I’d rather be in a zone of danger than a burger joint or an Arby’s. (2 other things that use that distinctive voice)
I’m not a fan of introducing Tribbles to Pike’s Enterprise/era.
The plot of “The Trouble with Tribbles” hinged on nobody knowing what a Tribble was; that, despite being little purring balls of fur, they were a dangerous invasive species. I would think that having Pike and the Federation encounter them a decade prior, they would have been cataloged.
I’m sure the Enterprise encounters some handwavium at some point which explains why they were never added to the database.

“You there, in the red shirt, make a note of this Tribble encounter in the log.”
The second short Trek is up at Amazon & CBS, and I loved it.
They have been doing old style novel covers for them:

That ship has sailed, there was one onboard Archer’s Enterprise in Phlox’s menagerie of horrors.
I really, really, REALLY want one of these. My only objection is that it’s a bluetooth device that has to be paired with your phone, so you also need to carry a phone in your pocket. Why not make it an actual phone, so this is all you need?
Wow, The Trouble with Edward really was Archer in the Trek universe.
What the fuck was that?
.
I like comedy in Trek but that was, well, it was dumb.
.
Total waste of everyone’s time.
I’m sure the Enterprise encounters some handwavium at some point which explains why they were never added to the database.
Two words: Section 31.
I really enjoyed it, especially the commercial at the end.
The small print on-screen during the ad was amazing.
“The Trouble with Edward” was a strange little experience — a Star Trek episode done by way of Seinfeld and South Park.
Makes me think they’re using it as a trial balloon to test the waters for a Star Trek comedy. It was pretty much an episode of The Orville.
Rosa Salazar was quite cute, and I didn’t recognize who she was without the buggy eyes.
Using the Tribbles kind of broke canon for me; but maybe Section 31 saw a good anti-Klingon bioweapon when they saw one and decided to classify the little furry bastards. (I guess “Section 31” is now the Star Trek get-out-of-jail-free card for continuity gaffes.)
Doctor Phlox had some Tribbles on NX-01 Enterprise, so that ship sailed a long time ago.
Phlox was obviously a Section 31 agent.
He wouldn’t have been the only Section 31 agent on that ship
It was need to know.
Frankly, I didn’t need to know either.
I really hope they don’t start over-using Section 31.
It worked on DS9 because they were at war with a superior power, and, when you’re at war, you kind of need groups like Section 31.
But I don’t really like the idea of the Star Trek universe having this sinister “shadow government” behind the Federation that is constantly suppressing technology and information for its own benefit. It IS an interesting concept, but by that same token, it’s also something that could quickly start to overwhelm the stories if it isn’t used sparingly. And I think it also hurts the Star Trek brand, where the utopian society is part of its long-time appeal.
Just tread carefully with this stuff…
The McCormack Picard book has now become a hardback, which renders the price point both far more logical and attractive. Online discount will take a £16.99 RRP to around £9-11, which is fine.
Discovery will be on E4 in the UK/Ireland next year:
E4 Inks Deal With CBS Studios International For ‘Man With A Plan’ & ‘Star Trek: Discovery’
Are the new Short Treks up on Netflix UK yet? I remember them being tricky to find last time.
No, they didn’t add them until the day S2 started last time IIRC, and they were hidden in the Trailers & More section.
Yeah, that’s what I seem to remember too. I guess I’ll wait and watch them then.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Short Treks get distributed outside the US. 1-3 are about or related to the Enterprise. 4 and 5 are linked to Discovery, and 6 is linked to Old Man Picard.
Sometimes it looks like senior media professionals still regard the world beyond US borders as an afterthought?
.
The Short Treks should be readily (legally) available everywhere, helping to promote the brand and drum up viewers for the core series, any future movies and all that profitable merchandising.
.
But instead, they’re not.
.
I understand the concept of regional rights for IP, but that’s not the world a lot of people live in anymore.
The last Short Treks were on Netflix in the UK. Is that the case for this latest batch?

Well, in the US the first one were included in Discovery, but now they are listed as a separate series.

The last set were on Netflix, rather hidden away in the trailers section with no fanfare but they also took a long time to arrive. They’ll probably do the same again.

Torrent, most likely.

Fingers crossed that the three that feature Pike’s Enterprise means they’re prepping a Pike Enterprise-based series. The cast and Enterprise sets are just too awesome not to keep using.
.
4 & 5 are, I think, going to be the animated ones. I had assumed that they were going to preview the upcoming Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series, but I don’t think they’ve officially said anything yet about their content. You probably know more than I do, though.

Yeah, it probably comes down to a lot of legal red tape. The Short Trek program seems like something that could fall into a contractual gray area, where it’s just a suite of short stories and not necessarily covered under the sub-franchises like Discovery.
.
This day and age, everything needs to be released globally at the same time, otherwise it’s going to be pirated like crazy. And if it shows up on international Netflix three or four months after the US debut, what value it once had will be reduced because half of the people who would even want to see it have already grabbed it illegally.
Some tidbits from Las Vegas:
– Lower Decks will have 10 episodes per season, 30 minutes length. First season is recorded and being animated.
– Data’s CGI effects weren’t finished for NYCC trailer, he looks like Nemesis in the show.
– Some books coming during 2020:
– April 28, 2020: THE ART OF STAR TREK DISCOVERY
– July 14, 2020: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF KATHRYN JANEWAY
– September 1, 2020: THE ARTISTRY OF DAN CURRY

Heh. Yeah, okay, Ephraim and Dot looks like a very cute idea.
Ask not was decent, if light. I saw the twist coming a mile off, but the performances were good and the script was good. Not much to say but I liked it.
Not everything can be done by the book.

When is Discovery proper starting again?
I don’t think they’ve announced a date for Disco‘s return yet.
I would hazard a guess that the third season will become available sometime next Spring, probably May or June, about a month after Picard ends. But we might get lucky and it will begin in April.
Oh, for some reason I thought it was sooner, before the end of the year.
I believe they’re still filming.
.
Shows do start airing before filming is completed, sometimes, but it seems not this time.
I think I associate the show with this time of year because of the way the first season was split between late 2017 and early 2018.

This is neither here nor there, but I think the Enterprise shown there is the redesigned one from Discovery and not the classic look. The nacelles look like the new ones; can’t quite tell if the pylons have that cutout area in them.

Yeah, I am sure there’s no scenario where mixing our DNA willy-nilly with other, extremely different, species could be a bad idea.
Results vary.
.
So much for the first female directed Star Trek movie.
Well, IF it happens it’ll be a chance to do something unusual with it.
.
But they still have to get the cast back and they’re all going to want big money.
.
I think it’s 50/50 this gets cancelled and they try something else, again.
The whole Tarantino thing seems to have gone quiet.
edit: Eh, that wasn’t a very appropriate joke. Sorry.
Surprise, Kelvin IV lives: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-trek-fargo-creator-noah-hawley-direct-next-film-1256352 Paramount Setting Noah Hawley To Write & Direct Next ‘Star Trek’ Film
Wait, what? Seriously?
.
I hope this really happens. I could get really excited for a Noah-Hawley-written-and-directed Star Trek. More so than for a Tarantino one, really (which would be awesome, but it would be kind of like an Elseworld Trek thing, you know?).
Sad news. RIP
Robert Walker Jr., ‘Star Trek’ Actor and Son of Hollywood Superstars, Dies at 79
On the second aired episode of Star Trek, “Charlie X,” the slender, blue-eyed Walker portrayed Charles “Charlie” Evans, the sole survivor of a transport-ship crash who possesses strange powers. Walker was actually 26 when he played the 17-year-old Charlie during filming in 1966.
RIP Rene.
is this turning into the Obituary thread? really plays into the death comes in 3s theory. RIP Rene. Odo was a classic.
I’m actually properly sad about this. Having rewatched DS9 earlier in the year I realised Aberjonois was on of the many actors who gave, through his performance, gave the show real heart.

Yeah, he was a really good actor, and Odo may be my favourite Star Trek character of all. Really sad to hear this.
Huh. For some reason I had it in my head that Picard was being done as a one-off season only.
My guess would be they did it as a one-off season but with options on all the key talent.
And now they’ve seen it, they’re picking up those options. That’s encouraging for Trek fans waiting for January 23rd.
The whole Tarantino thing seems to have gone quiet.
Quentin Tarantino Re-Thinking ‘Star Trek’ Film
The internet is blowing up after comments that Quentin Tarantino might be stepping away from directing the R-rated version of Star Trek he cooked up with JJ Abrams, with The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith scripting. I happened to be on the phone with Tarantino as the stories began spreading. Tarantino said he hasn’t made a definitive decision, yet.
“I might be steering away from it, but we’ll see,” he said. “I haven’t completely decided, or talked to anyone involved. Nothing is official.”
Deadline broke the story of the decision by Tarantino and Abrams to develop the script with Smith, a passion fueled by Tarantino’s love for the original show and particularly the James T. Kirk character created by William Shatner for exec producer and creator Gene Roddenberry. It would be a shame for Trek fans if Tarantino won’t direct it but Smith has turned in a script he likes and they’ve done a lot of developing, so it might well be a gift for another filmmaker. They’ve all been waiting for Tarantino to complete his awards season promotion for the triumph Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, which just got its DVD release and still remains a front runner.
Deadline revealed recently that Noah Hawley had come aboard to also develop to direct another Star Trek film.

Tarantino should do his own space opera movie. Don’t call it Star Trek or Star Wars or bother trying to fit into those restrictive franchises. I’d watch the hell out of Pulp Fiction in Space.
New spot, LOCUTUS…
I know I shouldn’t get hyped because that’s the road to disappointment, but I’m getting proper excited for Picard.
Even the tie in comic is good.
I’m scared, I have hope
I saw parts of Star Trek Beyond the other day and it wasn’t bad here and there. It was mostly action and adventure as a movie usually is but no the TV formula of Kirk and Spock figuring things out and working out a plan.
Now to my knowledge, Pine left so there won’t be more movies like that and QT is stepping out of his project.
Hope for the best and hope they don’t churn out movies and shows to the point of fatigue.
The movies all seem to be somewhat on hold now. I think part of the problem is Star Trek has a strong dedicated audience but it’s never really hit blockbuster takings despite the fact that they are big sci-fi effects driven films. The box office usually looks around the ‘break even’ point and not the big profit zone that stuff like Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter gets.
So maybe the future for the franchise is going to back where it started, on TV. In a subscription model that large dedicated fanbase is exactly what you need. A big number of them will sign up just for a particular show because they can’t miss anything Trek (also why sports has always been good at getting people to sign up as they are fanatical about their teams). Something like Jurassic World may have made loads more money at the box office than any Trek films but the audience is a lot more casual and I think if you put a series of that on to tempt subscribers it wouldn’t be as successful.

They’ve got Noah Hawley for it, so I hope there’s a movie actually coming.

That’s not the way things work unfortunately.
If another filmmaker does take over the project they’ll want to stamp their imprint on it, and the script will be heavily rewritten, or even dropped entirely.
