Hey you, yeah you. You can use this thread to show off your latest original comics art acquisitions and commissions. As I shall now demonstrate.

As I said in the old thread back on MW, I’d been left hanging a bit by a few artists including Nick Roche. Then, rather out of the blue, this Monday he got back in touch to say he was doing my pieces, only could I remind him on the details for them. Which I did, and paid, and now a few days later, they’re here. :yahoo: (no, the animated smilies have not got old for me yet).

So, the first piece is a sketch card for my Beast Wars collection. I had Nick do Dinobot, because I thought the big chinned bastard would suit his style and it really does. Love the smooth shading on him too.

The next two are more sketch cards for my Visionaries collection. I wanted the same artist to do the two factions’ leaders, Leoric and Darkstorm, to go as a centrepiece in the eventual framing arrangement.

Or maybe they’d work better the other way around?

Either way, love the way they turned out.

And the last piece was originally meant to be a pre-con commission for Auto Assembly 2015. It wasn’t done in time for the show though, so Nick gave it to me (free) as just pencils (I bought some prints too). I’ve carried around in my folder to shows for years on the off-chance I might get it inked, but never have and then when LFCC came around, I figured who better than Nick to ink it?

The original pencils:

And the inked version:

This is the first time I’ve had successive work done to a commission and I have to say, it is a little strange seeing a piece I’ve had for four years transformed like this. I didn’t have it displayed, because the pencils were too light to see, but I still knew it well and now it’s… different but also the same?

    They’re awesome.

I’m glad Nick came through. He’s a friend of mine and a lovely bloke but I appreciate he left you hanging for a while there.

I really like his stuff, I’ve got a deaths head by him hanging on the wall at home.

  • #499

Yeah, I’ve met Nick a few times at cons now and he’s lovely but a tad flakey/forgetful.
The first con I went to with the intention of getting a convention sketch was Auto Assembly 2010. I queued at his table for a good two hours+ in a line that was moving at a glacial pace because he was taking on pieces and doing them while chatting to people and it just wasn’t going anywhere. I eventually got near the front and he went off to do a panel. That was 2010, so I don’t think he’d done many cons before then and hadn’t thought to take a list or anything.
For AA 2015, I pre-commissioned that Springer for pick up on the Saturday. He turned up about midday, none of the commissions finished and didn’t manage to do it by the end of the day. Next time was TF Nation 2017, I pre-commissioned a piece, it was done for pick up and everything went smoothly.
But he came through in the end and it wasn’t as long a wait as I feared it might be.

That last one really shows how good a good inker is. Transforms (ha!) a fairly mundane image into something pretty special.

  • #510

True. But the pencil stage was only ever meant to be a rough intermediate for the inks rather than a stand-alone pencilled piece.

I was reminded by James that I am still waiting for a sketch from Hitch after 17 years because twice he said to not queue as he’d definitely sort me out. I know he’s slow, but…. :rose:

Got some cash for my birthday from parents/grandparent so I’ve shot a wee email off enquiring about some Cam Kennedy Judge Dredd pages. Couple of very affordable pages kicking about that I’m hoping are still available…

Happy Birthday, Bruce!! Hope it was a great day.

  • #2781

    Happy birthday Bruce!

  • #2788

    Thanks @Njerry, @davewallace!

Just to put a dampner on the whole thing I got an email back from the guy who deals with Cam’s sales saying he currently taking a break from postal sales.

  • #2982

Sorry to hear that Bruce, but Happy Belated birthday anyways.

  • #3018

    Thanks Don!

I’m not too bummed out about the lack of current availability. Happy enough to play the waiting game. However, without being overly macabre, I always get a little bit nervous when dealing with older artists though!

well, Dutch artist Ralf van der Hoeven just finished this one and I wanted it so it is coming my way :)

I have this “mummy” theme going on ( I could fill a complete solo topic on this, but instead I am just publishing comics about it :) ) and cannot get enough of it! I think I have over 250 now, which you can also check at https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=8297

  • #5345

These are a few new ones, from Terry Moore and Gabriel Rodrigues, who I met in the FACTS-convention in Belgium last month.
I also got this gift from Mirka Andolfo and Dutch artist Ihsahnity came up with a lovely bust in his artbook for me.

  • #5570

You’re probably dealing with Mark? He’sa good buddy of mine and we’re going up to Thought Bubble this weekend. I’ll see if I can get an update on the situation. He’s also now repping for Ian Kennedy.

Yeah. The guy who replied signed off the email was called Mark and and it looks like he runs both of the Kennedy’s Instagram profiles. If you can get an update and put a good word in for me I’d appreciate it. I just passed the Cardboard City story in my Dredd Case Files reread and I found myself looking at the page I wanted longingly!

  • #6392

Hey Bruce. So the situation is that Cam has effectively lost interest in posting out artwork. He’s not that keen on packaging it up and taking to the post office and then worrying if it gets delivered okay. He also has other personal stuff going on at the moment. Mark said he might start selling/posting out art again but didn’t give any indication of when that will be.

It’s possible he would sell it in person but you’d need to get to the Orkney Islands to do that1

  • #6428

Thanks for the update there Bobby. Hopefully theres a change in heart some stage down the line. Orkney is a wee bit out of the way unfortunately!

My first commission of 2020 is another Beast Wars sketch card (will I finish the set this year? Probably not). It’s Silverbolt by “Loose Screws”.

Super quick turnaround on this. I initially emailed Monday or Sunday and it had arrived on Friday.

  • #23017

Two more Beast Wars sketch cards! These are by Andrew Griffith (who pencilled most of John Barber’s RiD/The Transformers run). Not with me yet, but got sent scans of them this morning.

    Depth Charge

    Inferno

Just six more characters to go. And I’ve got another Visionaries card in the works too. Only five of them left. I might actually finish one of these sets yet!

Wow, I really had to go hunting for this thread.

So I’ve got a new sketch card commission, from the wonderful Dave Stokes. Well, two actually.

See I commissioned Dave back in March or April to do a card for my Visionaries set. And he was up for it but said it might take a while to be able to post due to lockdown, work etc which is absolutely fine. Last week or so I decided to check in, because it had been a while, and Dave said he’d forgotten (which is entirely understandable) but he’d do it this week. A few days later he sent along a photo of this:

Which is an incredible piece but not what I’d ask for (which is important cos it’s for a set), so I very awkwardly and nervously replied saying that but offering to buy this painted piece off him too. Dave quickly apologised, refused extra payment and did this one:

Which is also brilliant and fits the set I’m building perfectly. They both arrived this morning (via special guaranteed by 1pm delivery!) and look just as awesome in person.

I would absolutely recommend getting a commission from Dave. His work is amazing and he’s a lovely guy.

I’m in the process of moving house. It sucks packing up stuff but a plus is that I found this while clearing out the loft.

    IMG_20201019_202810_310

Colin MacNeil pastels and chalk Dredd. Had no idea where I’d put it and was convinced it got lost in the last move 6 / 7 years ago. Delight to have found it. Less delighted to have to immediately pack it away again.

Man, that would have been terrible to lose.

Yeah. I remember looking for it a couple years ago and being gutted I couldn’t find it. It only cost me something like 10 or 20 quid but it’s a fantastic piece. I stood and watched MacNeil put it together. The whole thing looked just “ok” until he started adding the white to it and then it just popped from the paper.

  • #43044

    Another sketch card commission!

Tigatron (off Beast Wars Transformers) by Casey Coller. I love it. Only four more to go for that set. Four? Five?… Five more to go.

Oh, I also bought some original art pages recently. I’ve had my eye on them for absolutely ages, but just never got around to actually going for them, but with the impending change to import VAT, I figured now was the time.  They’re both by Chris Cross, who I think is a criminally under-rated artist.

A page from Captain Marvel (the Genis run):

and a page from Slingers. Slingers!

The brown marks on the Slingers page weren’t visible in the website’s stock photo, because it seems to be degrading paste/glue. The shelves in the background of panels 1 and 4 have been pasted on, I guess from an earlier abandoned attempt at the page. They’re not covering anything and I might need to just stick down the edges a bit before I get the page framed.

Love Chriscross.  I only got Slingers because of his artwork.  Xero is another underrated gem.

I think it’s great that comic art is being seen now as the work of art that it undoubtedly is, but… who the hell has $144,000 to spend on a comic page??

Got some new commissions. All Transformers ones from an artist called Yuka Zoshi who doesn’t seem to have any published pro work yet, but is awesome.

    Rhinox sketch card

    Waspinator sketch card

A4 headshot of Hot-Rider (aka Turbofire) one of my favourite TF toys when I were a lad. He has a wonderfully 90s lime green and fluorescent pink colour scheme which I’m going to have a go at digitally colouring.

I have a complicated relationship with Rob Liefeld’s work so attended some of his WhatNot live auctions and managed to score a preliminary page sketch featuring Batman and Robin from his Nu52 work.

As a Christmas gift I decided to splurge and successfully bid for a page of his original art – it’s not some iconic page but to make it a bit more special it features a villain from Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon (the only ongoing I still buy) – my first piece of OA.

to get a Liefeld is something. Some folks might not dig it much, but more fans then haters fortunately. And he is an icon, no matter what you think of him!!

So I had a lovely Kickstarter-reward by Kyle Roberts.

    kyle_roberts_2022

And also a lovely KS-reward by Aly Fell

    mummy_alyfell2022

and I am reaching the 300-mummy level and I could not be happier to keep continuing this theme!!

    buddroot2021a
even Budd Root made a 2d attempt into my theme and excelled!!

So just after Christmas I saw that some of Jacob Phillips’s original art from one of last year’s best comics, The Enfield Gang Massacre, had gone on sale – and when I saw this page I knew I had to have it. It arrived today.

Should be getting it framed and up on the wall soon. I think Jacob is a real talent on a par with his dad, and I’m pleased to have got a piece of his before I’m priced out of the market!

Got my first sketch card commission in ages in the post today. It’s (Transmetal) Cheetor by Sara Pitre-Durocher.

    Cheetor-by-Sara-Pitre-Durocher

And that, astoundingly, actually finishes off one of my sketch card sets for like the first time ever (well, I’ve got a Captain America, Falcon and Winter Soldier triptych by Chris Giarusso, but that wasn’t entirely planned out). I’ve got all the BW Maximals and I can now frame them! And then try and find wall space. I didn’t really plan that far ahead.

Picked up a great piece of original art from the old Red Dwarf Smegazine. It’s a fully painted page by Roger Langridge with an acetate overlay for the lettering.

A beautiful piece, the colours are so vibrant compared to the printed page! Great to have the whole crew on there too.

What an ugly piece of trash, Dave. Tell you what, I’ll take it off your hands for $20, just because I like you. Is it a deal?

    Please?!
