    Luc Bessons Anna

I liked it. It’s check your brain at the door and go for a ride flashy espionage stuff. The action scenes are pretty good and, frankly, it’s well shot.

I don’t really understand the mediocre reviews. It’s not pretending to be something it’s not. If you like any of Bessons films, you’ll like this.

to bring back an old staple from MW: Kid Actor looking for work.

I agree with Chris. To me, Natalie Portman is like the buzzkill friend or partner who comes around and bitches how Thor and Korg need to stop playing video games, grow up and be adults. The reason Jane stopped being Thor in the comics was because of Cancer but imo, it was never a big part of the story line. It was like her Thor would go out and be a cosmic bad ass then at the end of the story, she has to turn back into Jane and go to chemotherapy. LAME.
Ragnarok worked for me because it was fun. Both Thor and Hulk got to show different playful sides of themselves and people liked it. As soon as I saw Natalie at Comic Con, I worried the script would have to have some big dramatic role for her and take away from the fun that was Ragnarok. I am going to see the movie and I am going to have faith in Watiti to make an enjoyable movie.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Adds Marvel Chief Creative Officer Title; He’ll Oversee All Creative & Story Initiatives

Here is how the reporting structure will line up right under Feige: Dan Buckley will continue as President of Marvel Entertainment, where Ike Perlmutter remains Chairman. Long a creative collaborator for Feige in publishing and television, Buckley will have a dual reporting structure going forward, Deadline hears. He will continue to oversee publishing creative/editorial and in that capacity he will now report to Feige. Buckley is also responsible for publishing operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing and events. There, he will report to Perlmutter. It is expected that Joe Quesada will remain a creative lead for of Marvel Entertainment, reporting to Buckley. It is expected that all the creative execs in publishing will report to Buckley.

I was kind of expecting them to use him in team-up movies. I mean, this is where they’ve been moving anyway, isn’t it?

And now even Francis Ford Copolla is chiming in with Scorcese calling the MCEU “despicable”

What did those movies ever do to you Francis?

  • #3269

James Gunn takes the high road:

    View this post on Instagram

Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them “despicable”. Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same. I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, “I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!” Superheroes are simply today’s gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that’s okay. ❤️

I love francis ford coppola (he’s probably close to my favourite director) but his filmography isn’t perfect. He made ‘Jack’.

Oh well, I’m still hoping Coppola comes back with an amazing movie or TV show.

  • #3303

    Francis Ford Coppolas X-Men

  • #3383

Yeah, well. Coppola and Scorcese make very different kinds of movies, and I wouldn’t expect them to have a lot of respect for what Marvel is doing. But their whole thing about how this is changing cinema and audiences is disingenious, I think – those kind of movies were also out there in the eighties and before that and after that.

    It’s all a bit old-man-shouting-at-clouds really.
    *
And I think there’s one thing that actually has changed: audiences don’t think like this anymore. They’ll watch the current Cannes-winning movie and a series like Better Call Saul, and then a Marvel movie. Tastes are varied and people like everything, and you don’t have actually choose sides when it comes to Art and Entertainment. Honestly, you never did, but it has become a lot clearer these days that there isn’t actually a hard border between those fields.

  • #3390

Scorsese just made his most recent film for Netflix, then told everyone to go see it in theatres. I think they see this as Marvel’s fault? If it wasn’t for these pesky superheroes people would go see movies about mid-20th century gangsters in cinemas instead?
    .
These guys were superstars and made some very successful films, but the world changed and they didn’t. They’re no less talented (Scorsese for sure, it’s been a while since I saw a Coppola movie) but they make the kind of films that have moved to peak TV.

And more often than not, they become series rather than movies on TV and streaming services. Not a good thing or bad thing, though. Some projects benefit from the expansion while other could have worked better as movie.

  • #3395

I went to a talk earlier this year by a guy who’d made a great little short film as a pitch for a movie.
    .
But it was taking a long time to get it financed as a feature film and, in the meantime, TV companies had come knocking, asking to develop the short as a TV series.
    .
    And he turned them down.
    .
Some people just want to make films. That word means something to them that TV doesn’t. Even today.

  • #3474

I don’t really expect guys like Coppola and Scorsese to be into Marvel movies. But they do kind of sound like Grumpy Old Men when they complain about them as being the death of cinema. That said, I might watch a Grumpy Old Men movie starring those two.

I don’t wanna shit on Loeb that much because he did make the NEtflix shows happen, particularaly DD, and Legion, but yeah, the rest is mediocre at best.

  • #3639

Loebs done a better job with TV then he did with comics. Daredevil Yellow was pretty good but Ultimates 3 sucked.

It sounds like Feige is cutting the fat, and, to be honest I don’t hate that. I would expect in 5 years time the only Marvel content will be accessible on Disney + with ABC having ads for it.

I think the ABC and Hulu shows will go the way of the dodo.

Cartoons, though, cartoons will probably go to whatever the cartoon Disney network is.

    Huh.

I’ll be curious to see what content co

It will probably mostly be on Stan for at leasr 12 months, (a local streaming service run by News Corp (not Fox)), so there’s an interesting bit of legal work going on about that I’m sure.

Yeah C&D was very much watcheable, but they padded the shit out of it… I’m assuming that’s what killed it… the actors were good and the stories themselves were also fine, but yeah, lots of nothing going on most of the time…

He says himself that he is an old man

I know that if I were younger, if I’d come of age at a later time, I might have been excited by these pictures and maybe even wanted to make one myself. But I grew up when I did and I developed a sense of movies — of what they were and what they could be — that was as far from the Marvel universe as we on Earth are from Alpha Centauri.

I may disagree with him about whether there is substance and emotional resonance in Marvel but I agree that movies from the 50s, 60s and 70s and movies from 2010s are very very different.

Alcoholism? Wait, Seven Psychopaths already did that joke.

As to the dominance of superheroes as commercial blockbusters, it’s interesting to consider that, while comics are going away from the dominance of the superhero genre, in film the big Hollywood blockbusters are eagerly embracing it.

    From Chip Zdarsky’s latest newsletter:

    ARE MARVEL COMICS CINEMA
(the below is excerpted from my op-ed in the New York Times)
    .
A bunch of people are debating this question: Are Marvel Comics cinema? In a lot of ways, it’s a question that defines our times, which are stupid. Now, I’m clearly an expert on Marvel Comics, but I also happen to consider myself an expert when it comes to cinema, having watched many movies. In fact, if you ever go with me to see a movie, you’ll soon discover my expertise as I regale you with really interesting movie trivia throughout the screening (“That parking lot was also featured in Deadpool 2 as a digital recreation.” “That actor was in the previous scene.”).
    .
So, who better than me to wade in on this topic? There are a lot of things to consider, so bear with me as I hit my word count.
    .
First of all, comics don’t move unless you physically move them yourself. Cinema does. In fact, it’s one of its defining characteristics. Cinema is like watching moving and talking giants trapped in a box. Whereas comics are like tiny, frozen people trapped in different boxes.
    .
Second of all, you need to read comics. Cinema doesn’t require reading. I know what you’re thinking. “But Chip, what about movies with subtitles?” Well, you got me there. Or did you? I don’t believe that movies with subtitles are movies. In fact, I like to call them “motion comics.”
    .
But what about the similarities? Fifty percent of Marvel comic books feature Spider-Man, and fifty percent of movies also feature Spider-Man. A movie ticket costs fifteen bucks. So does a Marvel comic. Both are consumed with popcorn. I know that these examples make it seem like Marvel comics and cinema are interchangeable, but ask yourself this: are they? No, they’re not.
    .
    Thank you.
