    I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Marvel wouldn’t exist today (beyond maybe a bunch of rights and archives sold to another company, ala EC) without Shooter’s tenure as EIC. The editorial department in the 70s was a chaotic mess and he was the one that made it function. I think most of the problems* came later when he didn’t have as many fires to put out so got caught up in micro-managing things that could have been left alone.

     

    *as an editor. He obviously had some questionable tropes as a writer.

    The guy broke into comics at the age of 14. That’s insane. As is his legacy. Like Martin said: No Shooter, no more Marvel.

    A monumental figure in the history of comics to be sure.  He also created the backstory for the Transformers before handing it off to Bob Budiansky to flesh out.
