I bought a capture card (well, usb stick) the other day, to back-up old VHS tapes with home movies on. I initially tested it with some games consoles (while waiting on a SCART to RCA cable that would hook up my VCR to it) and those worked fine. Decent image quality and a stable picture in the three different programs I tried (the low rent, early-00s capture software that came with the device; OBS; and the more high-end, freeware Virtual Dub).
The cable arrived, I hooked up the VCR and yet I keep getting picture problems like this:
That’s the most extreme it’s been, occasionally it’s been slight coloured bands over part of a normal picture and though the same parts of a tape seem to be affected they don’t always come out the same way or to the same severity. I’ve tried three different tapes (old air recordings of stuff): One is persistently messed up (where that cap is from), one was fine except for ads in the program, one was totally fine. I’ve tested them on my TV, using the same VCR and cable and they display perfectly normally.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
