Hey folks. What’s the best Tarzan movie? Why?

I’m not feeling the Johnny Weissmuller movies.

The Disney Tarzan movie is surprisingly good, if not at all faithful to the source material. (It’s so weird they named the bad guy John Clayton as it is, for those of you who don’t know, Tarzans human name.)

Lord Greystoke, the one with the Highlander. I saw this one when I was young and don’t remember it. Is it worth going back to view it?

The one with Skarsgård – I liked this one.

Are there any other prominent Tarzan movies?

The quest for escapism goes on…

Clearly the best Tarzan movie is Crocodile Dundee.

I remember it being sexy, mostly. Or at least sexy to a thirteen-year-old.

I forgot the Skarsgard one, I have to watch that at some point.

I still think that Tarzan’s story is has too much colonialist DNA to be relevant anymore, generally speaking.

I remember there was a remake with Bo Derek as Jane a couple of years earlier and that was very sexy (for a teenage boy in the 80s anyway). When Tarzan first meets Jane he has a little fondle on her mammaries.

I’m not feeling the Johnny Weissmuller movies.

Back in the 80’s, my father mailed a letter to Channel 5 protesting their airing Tarzan movies due to the negative and stereotypical portrayal of native Africans.

In that Bo Derek one, I remember in the end, that tribal king was about to rape Jane in front of her captured family, then Tarzan came to the rescue and fought the king. One of the tribesmen was about to shoot an arrow at him, but another tribesman stopped him to let the two fight it out. Tarzan of course won the fight and killed the king.

Looking back, there should have been more action in that fight. But the movie was just another Bo Derek vehicle…

Watching the Disney Tarzan right now. Something that really stands out is the soundtrack. It’s really good. I’ve never been a big Phil Collins fan but it really elevates the movie.

My wife loves the Disney Tarzan movie, and also really likes the soundtrack. I’ve never been a big Phil Collins fan so it grates for me slightly (and I find it odd when Disney movies feature a recognisable singer like that rather than having the characters sing), but I do think the semi-3D animation of that movie is very pretty.

Honestly, the Ron Ely TARZAN tv series was the only live action Tarzan for me as a kid.
